Almondina Cookies

Author: healthnuttxo

Almondina makes “a delicious cookie without the guilt”. How without the guilt you ask? Well, there are no preservatives, artificial flavors/colors, no added fat or salt, are all natural, and relatively low in fat and calories. They are crispy biscotti-like cookies, and come in several flavors- Original, Choco-nut, Cinnaroma, Gingerspice, AlmonDuo, Anniversary, BranTreats, Sesame, Pumpkin Spice, and Chocolate Dipped. All of them sound delectable!
I was fortunate enough to try, courtesy of Almondina Company, the Choconut, Pumpkin Spice, and Sesame flavors.

Each of these “biscuit-cookies” are about as long as your finger and wide as two fingers put together. They are crispy and crunchy, which I give credit to the “no added fat” aspect of the recipe.

Sesame- these were different- normally I’m not a sesame person, but these were enjoyable. My mom certainly enjoyed them, she kept bugging me for more after i gave her one (does the book If You Give A Mouse A Cookie… ring a bell to anyone?? 😛 ). They had SOOOO many sesame seeds- so if you like sesame, definitely try this cookie! It wasn’t as sweet as the other ones, but it was good with some lemon/herbal tea.

Choconut- Chocolate lovers-rejoice! these had a deep brown chocolate color to them. They were mildly sweet and definietely hard and crunchy, except for the spots filled with raisins. Those were nice & chewy, and it provided a nice relief to the crunch. It had a very good chocolate flavor and a LOT of almonds. Bursting with almonds even (the cookie is 20% almonds). It was fresh and flavorful, and I got my chocolate fix.  I also spread it some peanut butter on it- delish!

Pumpkin Spice- yuumm. Brings all the flavors of fall into a cookie. It had a nice nutmeg/cinnamon after taste, alongside a sweet and pumpkin-y flavor. Once again, the cookie is packed with almonds and pumpkin seeds. Very satisfying, and paired well with some vanilla yogurt 🙂

Overall, these are pretty good. I like how you get 4 of the cookies in a serving, for about 130 calories and not too much fat or sugar. I’m giving them 4 stars overall (5 stars to the choconut flavor-yum!).Almonds are definietely the dominant ingredient, and they don’t scrimp on them in the cookie! I think they are best when paired with something soothing, like yogurt, tea, or icecream to cancel out some of the CRUNCH. I’d like to try the cinnamon  and chocolate dipped varieties as well 🙂  I’d also be interested if they ever made a variety without all the almonds or nuts, but rather a “plain” cookie, like sugar flavored or something. I’ll keep an eye out!

Sesame- 4 cookies is 138 calories, 4.8 grams of fat, 20.7 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, and 3 grams of protein.
Choconut- 4 cookies is 133 calories, 3.6 grams of fat,22 grams of carbohydrates, 1 grams of fiber, and 3 grams of protein.
Pumpkin Spice- 4 cookies is 120.5 calories, 5.3 grams of fat, 14.8 grams of carbohydrates, 1.4 grams of fiber, and 3.5 grams of protein.

Sesame-Sesame Seeds, Flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour), Sugar, Egg Whites, Almonds, Raisins, Natural Flavors
Choconut- Almonds, Flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour), Sugar, Egg Whites, Raisins, Chocolate Liquor, Cocoa Powder, Natural Flavors.
Pumpkin Spice-Almonds, Flour (wheat flour, malted barley flour), Sugar, Egg Whites, Pumpkin Seeds, Pumpkin Spice, Natural Flavors

DONT FORGET ABOUT THE HOLEY DONUTS! and CASH giveaway! Just pop em an e-mail with my blog name/website in the subject line, and win some donuts and 150$ cash! All rules and entries are HERE!

I know what your thinking- donuts can’t be healthy. But Holey Donuts! definitely has a healthy twist on donut making. All their products are low in fat due to a special baking technique that doesn’t require deep frying the donuts. As a result, these products are lower in fat and calories as compared to Krispy Kreme, Dunkin Donuts and Entenmann’s products. They don’t use artificial sweetners and there are no trans fats in these products. Yet they claim to taste just like the real thing- sans the artery clogging fat.

I was skeptical- usually low fat things are dry, kind of bland. But i was generously sent “cinnamon bun middles” in the mail from Holey Donuts!. These claimed to be basically the “goodness” of the cinnamon bun- the gooey, soft, chewy center. Holey Donuts! says, “We promise that these buns won’t end up adding to your buns! After all don’t we all want smaller buns anyway? Moist, delicious, hand-made and delivered frozen to store in your freezer and enjoy anytime!”

Upon opening the box, there were about 20 of these babies, all about the size of my fist, and they looked GOOD. Just like those pillsbury ones you bake in the oven and drizzle with icing. I was so excited to try one- I bite into one right away. *oops* they were frozen! Heh, silly me 😉  But anywho- I took the partially bit cinnamon bun middle and stuck it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. The result? The bun was warm, with gooey icing dripping down the sides and a sweet and cinnamony aroma filled my kitchen. My mouth was watering at this point.

I took a bite, and…

GONE are the days I thought I could never have cinnamon buns again. Holey Donuts! has a cinnamon bun fairy that has created this magical dessert for little caloric damage (only 80-100 calories EACH!). The dough was soft and chewy, covered with cinnamon and a gooey, sweet vanilla icing. It wasn’t greasy at all, and had a lighter feel to the dough. The real center or core of the cinnamon bun had tons of cinnamon, and i think i even tasted an apple piece. It was denser than the rest of the cinnamon bun, and absolutely delicious.
Seriously guys. This thing tasted SINFUL. It brought me back to my pre-health conscious days where i would engulf a Dunkin Donuts cinnamon roll (my favorite!) at 340 calories and 20 grams of fat eat. It’s nice to know i have a nice swap.
Overall, 5 stars for taste, but i’m giving it 4 stars overall. It lacks fiber and does have refined sugar and some artificial flavors, which brings it down to a 4. It’s not entirely natural, which normally i’m against, but it is SUCH a better alternative to Dunkin or Cinnabon, and it really hits the spot when you need a cinnamon bun. (Hey- have 2! It’s the holidays! 🙂  )
You can buy some of these guys here.

Time for Thanksgiving review number 2! I figured applesauce and apple butter would fit the bill nicely. We always use applesauce as a compliment to the other dishes, but I like it in place of gravy with my turkey and I like using it as a condiment the next day for cold turkey and apple sandwiches. Yum! So i was excited to try products by Vermont Village Cannery. They make applesauce in the individual cups and jars in flavors Original Unsweetened, Raspberry, Mixed Berry, Peach, StrawberryBanana, Maple Syrup, Tropical Mango, Cranberry and Cinnamon and they also make a Spiced Apple Butter.  Basically, me being the fan of applesauce that i am, i’m in applesauce heaven. All of the products are naturally grown and made in Vermont, and the apples are purchased locally and are pesticide free. They also don’t have any added sugars or preservatives, and most of the products are organic if not all  natural.
I got to try the Peach, Cinnamon, Strawberry Banana and Maple Syrup varieties of the applesauce, and the spiced apple butter. What did i think?

Each of the applesauces had a velvety smooth texture, which I absolutely loved. No chunks, pieces or even tiny blumps in these applesauces. It had a smooth feeling going down, and you can tell a lot of TLC was put into cooking and making the applesauces. I enjoyed every single flavor I tried.

Peach- this one had a strong and subtly sweet peach flavor, complimented nicely by the apple. I froze this one for about 30 minutes, and had a little peach slushie. Yum! 4 stars

Cinnamon- oooh. total dessert applesauce we got here. SO smooth, SO delicious. The cinnamon flavor is absolutely perfect, and it tastes as if it had been simmering with cinnamon sticks and cooked for a while to acheive such a good taste. 4 1/2 stars 🙂

Strawberry-Banana- this one had more of a tartness to it than the peach, probably due to the strawberry flavor. I didn’t taste much banana, but rather more of a strawberry-apple combination. It also had just the right amount of sweetness. 4 stars

Maple Syrup-  another favorite. I was so excited to try this one, because i adore maple flavored things. It was the smoothest out of all of them texture wise, and had just a hint of maple flavor. It also had a bit of a lemon aftertaste. I heated it up in the microwave and it tasted like the inside of an apple pie. Deeeeeeee-lish. I would liek to crush some graham cracker crumbs and heat this up and place it on top- sort of like a mock pie! 4 1/2 stars

Spiced Apple Butter- Vermont Village Cannery is awarded BEST APPLE BUTTER EVER. Seriously. This stuff BLEW ME AWAY. It had a buttery (heh, no pun intended) consistency and it was sweet despite no added sugar. It had a nice blend of a nutmeg/cinnamon/maple taste, and I would totally eat it out of the jar (in fact, i did 😉 ) . It was perfect on waffles and heated up. I also used it in place of jelly for my usual PB&J and let’s just say I didn’t miss my sweet grape jelly at all. This stuff is SO good YOU MUST TRY IT. 5 stars!!!

Overall, obviosuly I loved these products. There great and perfect this time of the year, and anytime in my eyes 🙂 I’m giving 4 stars to the applesauce, and 5 for the apple butter. I would like to try the tropical mango variety. It sounds delish! Clearly, Apples +Vermont Village Cannery = amazing. Keep up the good work!

Lightlife Smart Deli Roast Turkey

Author: Healthnuttxo

So with Thanksgiving (gobble gobble!) rounding the corner, i figured I would do a whole bunch of Thanksgiving-related posts.
Here we have a “turkey” to review. I consider myself a “somewhat” vegetarian. I really don’t eat meat or fish- only if I go to a party or some other celebration and I don’t want  to make a fuss. However, when i do eat meat, i don’t eat beef or porc products. So, Thanksgiving is pretty much the only time of year i eat Turkey. So, I was rather curious when I saw Smart Deli Roast Turkey in stores by me. It is a fat free lunch meat alternative,  made with veggie and soy protein. Normally I’m skeptical of these products- I’ve tried a “ground beef” version once and had a rather, icky, experience. Too gummy, weird taste, you get the deal. However, I thought I would give this “deli meat” a shot- I mean why not? I was craving some turkey, and Thanksgiving was still a few days away…

The Roast Turkey is cholesterol free, without MSG, nitrates, and other fillers in standard cold cuts. It was round in shape, sort of like bolongna cold cuts, and had a brown/tan color. It smelt mildy spicy/peppery as I opened the package. I took a bite and….to my surprise, it was good! “Yum” was actually the first word that popped into my head. It tasted like TURKEY! How they do this, I’ll never know, but it was certainly yummy. It wasn’t too salty either, and had a nice spiced flavor with some onion and garlic mixed in. The consistency was also the same as cold cuts, not gummy or chewy, but pretty much the same as a slice you’d get from the deli counter. I even fooled my mom with this product asking her if she liked “the new turkey flavor that the store carried”. She said it was good and she would like it with a slice of cheese on a sandwich- but she didn’t know it wasn’t Turkey!

Overall, I give this 4 stars. I had a serving after a rigorous kickboxing class and it held me over until lunch with the yummy protein it provided. I think it was good by itself, but would be awesome on a sandwich, on some crackers, or maybe even rolled up hot with some all natural gravy. Yum! I’m interested in trying more of the deli selections by LightLife since the Turkey flavor was a hit. Perhaps you can save a turkey this year ? 🙂

So bloggies- have you had any good or (gross!) experiences with “meat alternatives”? Any brands you reccommend/hate? Let me know here!

4 slices is 100 calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 5 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber and 13 grams of protein. There are 300 mg (13%) per 4 slices, which isn’t too shabby, either.

WATER, WHEAT GLUTEN, SOYBEAN OIL, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, SOY SAUCE (WATER, SOYBEANS, WHEAT, SALT), NAVY BEAN FLOUR, LESS THAN 2% OF: TOFU POWDER (DEHULLED SOYBEANS, CALCIUM SULFATE), RICE BRAN, AUTOLYZED YEAST EXTRACT, NATURAL FLAVOR (FROM PLANT SOURCES), SALT, CARRAGEENAN, WHEAT STARCH, CALCIUM LACTATE, ONION POWDER, GARLIC POWDER, SEA SALT, CITRIC ACID.

P.B. Loco Flavored Gourmet Peanut Butter

Author: healthnuttxo

Time to review something I eat almost every day . I love, love, love (love!) peanut butter.

P.B. Loco makes all natural, gourmet flavored peanut butters. There are there are no hydrogenated oils used (yay!) . They also have cafe locations where they concoct delicious-sounding sandwiches like Yummer Nutter, which is white chocolate peanut butter by P.B. Loco, Nutella Spread and and Banana. Yum! They make  Peanut Butter with Caramel Apple, with Chocolate-Chip Cookie Dough,  with CoCoBanana, with Dark Chocolate Duo, with Jungle Banana, with Raspberry White Chocolate, with Sumatra Cinnamon and Raisin, with Asian Curry Spice and then Original “Munchy Crunchy” and “Creamy Dreamy”.  Can we say yum? 🙂 🙂 🙂

P.B. Loco sent me 2 1.8 oz samples, or about 3 and a half  Tablespoons, (in these cute little jars that resembled make-up jars!) in flavors Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Jungle Banana.  I could hardly contain my excitement, I tried them both in one day. 😀

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough- wow. Such a different take on peanut butter. It smells sweet, my mom said it smelled like “a bag of Halloween candy”, but a good kind of sweet. It’s a little bit runnier than traditional peanut butter, and there are swirls of chocolate and itty bitty chocolate chips in it. It really tastes amazing. I didn’t need to spread it on anything, and I ate it as is.  It has a nice blend of salty-sweet, but it isn’t too sweet. Just right. 5 stars!! 🙂 🙂

here’s what it looked like (before  I ate it!!)

Jungle Banana- ooooohhhh this one’s good. It smells sweet too, and you can actually smell banana. This one is amazing. It’s as close as you can get to peanut butter and banana mixed together. It’s just the perfect blend of Peanut butter and banana, and it’s smooth and satisfying. 🙂  5 stars.

Overall. Need I say it? These are awesome. If you like peanut butter, you can buy these if you want, and I definetely reccommend them!

Ener-G Foods Gluten Free Cinnamon Crackers

Author: healthnuttxo

Another review for those of you who have some allergies! Ener G is a trusted brand that makes tons of products, ranging from cookies, crackers,  breads, pizza doughs! “Our mission at Ener-G Foods, as one of the foremost producers of foods for diet-restricted individuals, is to provide a wide range of ready-made foods and mixes that are wholesome, nutritious, delicious, and risk free. We are constantly responding to the demand for special diets with research, innovative products and convenience foods.”

Well, i decided to give Ener-G a shot. I tried the Cinnamon Crackers, (i just love cinnamon or cinnamon sugar flavored things!) which are gluten, wheat, dairy and yeast free, and are also low in protein (some individuals follow a low protein diet). They were very good. They are a little bigger than a wheat thin, with a crispier and crunchier texture. They were bumpy/textured on one side, smooth on the other. On the “bumpy” side, was a sprinkling of sweet cinnamon and sugar, just the perfect amount. Not too sweet and not overpowering. They kind of reminded me of cinnamon raisin bread in a crunchy cracker form. Yum! Very addicting!

I had these by themself, with a cup of milk, and also with a wedge of laughing cow cheese spread on (so good!). I really enjoyed these and will be buying more online on the Ener-G site when I run out (which will be soon…unfortunately 🙁 ). I give these 4 stars 🙂 I can’t wait to try more of Ener-G’s products! I really want to try the brownie and cookie products! Yum!

10 crackers is 70 calories (whoop!), 5 grams of fat, 12 carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber (gotta love that fiber!), only 3 grams of sugar and 0 grams of protein. I’d say those are pretty good stats 🙂

Filtered water, Hi Maize Corn Starch, High Oleic Safflower Oil, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Yellow Corn Flour, Xanthan Gum, Methylcellulose, Evaporated Cane Juice Sugar, Cinnamon Powder, Salt.

Midel makes a whole bunch of products, and they have a gluten free line. Midel makes the cookies and snacks without preservatives, trans fats, or artificial ingredients. Some of them are even dairy free! I got to try the Arrowroot, Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Caramel, and Chocolate Sandwich varieties sent to me by the company.

Arrowroot-uhhh, Deliiishh! Nice and buttery flavor! These were sweet and crispy animal shaped crackers. Too cute! I particularly liked the polar bear and the camel. Almost too cute to eat 😉 These have a light vanilla flavor as well, and i think they taste better than the original animal crackers. They aren’t as dry or bland in my opinion, and have more of a buttery/vanilla flavor. 4 stars!

Chocolate Chip-These were good! The cookie is crispy and has a buttery taste to it. They have a golden brown color and have a good amount of chocolate chunks in them. They have the right amount of sweetness- not overpowering at all. A good Chocolate Chip cookie replacement! (plus- you get 5 in a serving! whoop!) 4 stars!

Chocolate Caramel- these were bite sized caramel goodness! At first it’s a strong chocolate flavor, but then, a sweet caramel flavor floods your mouth. These are really good, and good for munching on 🙂 Each is also the size of about a penny, and you get to eat 23 of them for only 110 calories. Wooo! I’m giving these 5 stars 🙂

Sahale Snacks Review

Author: healthnuttxo

Source

“Who says indulgent can’t be healthy?”
That’s Sahale’s slogan, and I totally agree. Sahale makes all natural nut mixes and glazed nuts, that are low in sodium, no trans fats, and truly satisying. They encourage you to “Snack Better” and eat their yummy snacks. We all know how much I enjoy nuts, so it was a real treat to eat these!  They come in Nut Blends, each with a different “story” or background info, and also glazed nuts.
From the Nut Blends, i tried the Soledad and Sing Buri variety, and from the glazed nuts I tried the Cashews with Pomegranate & Vanilla, and the Almond PB&J. Now i know your getting excited, so I’ll just begin my review now 🙂

Soledad- These were almonds with apple, flax seeds, dates, balsamic vinegar and red pepper. They definietly had a kick to them, which i give credit to the cayenne pepper in these babies. The almonds were a nice consistency, a nice crunch to them. The apple bits were perfect in the mix, they took away some of the heat. I liked the sweetness and chewiness the apple bits provided. My dad really liked these, but they were a bit too spicy for me. It all depends if you like it hot 😛  3 1/2 stars

Sing Buri- these were cashews with pineapple, peanuts, lemongrass and mild chinese chili. These were also spicy, but not as spicy as the Soledad. I loved, once again, the fruit bits of pineapple. It nicely sweetened up the mix. The cashews were nice and “plump” if you will, and the peanuts were also yummy. They added a more mellow taste to the mix. The cashews are covered in sesame seeds, and are nicely salted. 4 stars!

Almond PB&J-wow. I didn’t know you could eat peanut butter and jelly in nut form. This one was rockkkkkking! Given i eat peanut butter and jelly/honey/applebutter/maple syrup sandwiches pretty much every day for lunch, i was so happy eating these. SO delicious! Each almond is coated with a sweet glaze and has bits of berries stuck to them. It actually tastes like a PB&J sandwich, minus the bread. I’m definitely getting this one again! 5 stars 🙂 🙂

Pomegranate Cashews-another winner in my eyes. The vanilla flavor is strong and delicious. It’s sweet, not oily and the little bits of pomegranate kick butt. Really, really, really addictive (not good because they are NUTS and nuts are high in calories!), but SOOO worth it!! It has a light brown sugar taste, and a wee bit of orangey flavor. So good, i ate the whole bag in 2 days. 😀 5 stars!

Overall, these rock. 4 stars for sure as a whole. They satisfied my hunger and my sweetooth (or “spice” tooth 😉 ) and were all natural and not oily or too salty at all. I also like how 1 ounce is slightly less caloric but just as satisfying nuts alone due to the pieces of fruit added. I really want to try the other flavors- especially the Valdosta Pecan!! (love pecans!!)

Soledad- 1/4 cup is 130 calories, 9 grams of fat, 10 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein.
Almonds, Dried Apples (Unsulfured Apples, Sugar), Organic Flax Seeds, Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Balsamic Vinegar, Sea Salt, Spices, Date Juice Concentrate.

Sing Buri- 1/4 cup is 130 calories, 9 grams of fat, 10 carbohydrates, 1 grams of fiber, and 4 grams of protein.
Cashews, Peanuts, Dried Pineapple (unsulfered pineapple, sugar, citric acid), Black and White Sesame Seeds, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Rice Wine Vinegar, Spices, Sea Salt, Soy Sauce (water, wheat, soybeans, salt), Sake (rice wine).

Almond PB&J-1/4 cup is 160 calories, 12 grams of fat, 7 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, and 6 grams of protein.
Almonds, Peanuts, Evaporated Cane Juice, Dried Strawberries (strawberries, sugar, ascorbic acid), Brown Sugar, Dried Raspberry, Natural Vanilla Extract, Sea Salt, Strawberry Juice Concentrate, Pure Ground Vanilla Beans, Natural Raspberry Flavor.

Pomegranate Cashews- 1/4 cup is 150 calories, 10 grams of fat, 11 grams of carbohydrates, less than 1 fiber, and 4 grams of protein.
Cashews, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Dried Apples (Unsulfured apples, sugar, natural pomegranate flavor, citric acid, fruit and vegetable juice), Organic Tapioca Syrup, Brown Sugar, Natural Vanilla Extract, Sea Salt, Dried Pomegranate, Pomegranate Juice Concentrate, Dried Orange Peel, Pure Ground Vanilla Beans.

Penny’s Low Fat Desserts- Muffin Tops

Author: healthnuttxo

penny

Penny’s Low Fat Desserts makes all natural, nutritious desserts, such as muffins, cookies and what I got to try, the muffin tops! The muffin tops come in Orange-Cranberry, Almond Poppy seed, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, Carrot Raisin and Apple Cinnamon flavor. All are about 100-120 calories, generously sized (2 oz) and have 10% calcium needs per serving. There also individually wrapped, so portion control is easy 🙂

So how did these muffin tops taste? Well…

Carrot Raisin Top- my first bite, my brain said “Oh. My. God. THIS IS DELICIOUS!” The raisins were plump and perfect. The muffin was chewy and soft. You could actually see the pieces of carrots! I tasted a nice hint of nutmeg, and overall it had a sweet carrot flavor, like carrot cake. It was excellent. 5 stars 🙂 🙂

Almond Poppy Seed Top- Also DELICIOUS! It had a nice, light, lemony flavor and i really liked the teensy poppy seeds that added a bit of a crunch. It was soft, and moist and tasted like angel food cake to me. Went perfect with my Brown Cow Strawberry greek yogurt. I actually let a little piece sit in the yogurt for a few minutes and it got really soft and yummy! 5 stars for this one too!!

Apple Cinnamon Top– this one was also amazing! It tasted like Quaker Apple Cinnamon oatmeal to me! It was very moist, and mildly sweet. The cinnamon added a nice touch. I loved the apple chunks/pieces in it. 4 stars!

Chocolate Chocolate Chip Top- This one was the only one i wasn’t crazy about. And it’s chocolate too! Don’t get me wrong, it was good, but not as chocolatey as i expected. I think i would have liked it better if it wasn’t double chocolate, but perhaps just a chocolate chip muffin. But, it was soft, and mildly sweet. I did like the gooey chocolate chips,  especially after warming in the microwave 🙂 It had a mellow chocolate flavor, and it paired well with a glass of milk. I think it might taste good with a smearing of peanut butter on it. 3 stars

Overall, these are awesome ! I’m giving them 4 stars as a whole. The almond poppy seed and carrot raisin are 2 that I will be ordering a LOT!  I paired these with a yogurt for breakfast and was satisfied because it was not only delicious, but filling. I would love Penny to make a banana flavored top or something with peanut butter. Yum! I will hopefully be reviewing more of Penny’s treats in the near future. What are your favorites by Penny’s?
