Pillsbury Simply… Buttermilk Biscuit

Author: Healthnuttxo

I finally got around to trying these! It only took passing them a few times in the grocery store saying to myself, I really should get those. They look good. And then being distracted by the fact I needed to buy eggs or something else in the store and forgetting to buy them. HOWEVER, I finally bought them, cooked them, and ate them (ok not ALL of them…)

SO, here’s how one biscuit looked out of the oven. I broke it in half

These biscuits were light and fluffy, and absolutely delicious. They were a tad on the pasty side, but not overpowering. I certainly detected a buttermilk flavor which I thought was pleasant, and they had a salty flavor, which I actually really liked. I had 1 (ok… I had more than 1) with my dinner plain and thought they were just fine that way, but another person in my household had it with butter and seemed to enjoy them as well.

Overall, 4 stars. They are a tad high in saturated fat and sodium (330 mg) and have 0 grams of fiber per serving. However, not only delicious, but according to the package, also have “0g trans fat, no high fructose corn syrup, no artificial flavors, no artificial colors”. Sounds like my kind of biscuit!

What’s your favorite way to eat a biscuit? I’m pretty sure I like my plain, or with a little smear of butter!

Glutino Gluten Free Spinach & Feta Pizza

Author: Healthnuttxo

First off, HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY! I am, indeed wearing Green as I type this.

Moving on to some more green , the Glutino Gluten Free Spinach & Feta Pizza! I tried the Duo Cheese Pizza and thought it was rather tasty, so I decided to buy the Spinach & Feta version.

First off, I thought it was funny how it came out of the box. Look how off centered the topping was!

Anyway, I cooked it in the oven and smeared the topping a bit more evenly on the pizza and paired it with some steamed broccoli. I felt all the green was appropriate for St. Patty’s Day.

Accidental butter on the crust. Oops.

First I looked at the pizza, and saw it was a bit greasy. However, not the best decision to blot the pizza, as some of the cheese stuck to my napkin, so I left it as is (oops!).

At first bite, I thought it was kind of bland. But as I continued to eat it, I actually really enjoyed it. The spinach and the cheese were very rich, and really quite salty. The cheese was stringy and with the spinach had a very parmesean and mozzarella cheese-like flavor. The edges of the pizza were very crunchy and crisped up fast. As for the flavor of the crust, it was okay. It was kind of like a plain breadstick.

Overall, a very different pizza than what I’m used to. I almost missed the tomato sauce flavor! However, it certainly was tasty, and a bit salty too. There was 840mg of sodium in one pizza, which I thought was a tad high. Yet, I would get it again. 4 stars

Trader Joe’s Maple Leaf Cookies

Author: Healthnuttxo

Maple is definitely one of my favorite flavors. I couldn’t imagine waffles or french toast without maple syrup, and I LOVE it with scrambled eggs. So when I saw these Maple Leaf Cookies at Trader Joe’s, I just had to buy them!

On the cover, it states that it has a “smooth and flavorful maple cream filling” along with having “no artificial colors or flavors” and “no preservatives”. It already sounded like my kind of cookie ;)

Here’s what one of the cookies looked like out of the box.

Mmmm. I love cookies with a thick filling!

I took a bite. Mmm. This was delicious. The cookie part was buttery and had that soft-crunchy texture. It reminded me kind of like a shortbread cookie. The cream was absolutely delicious as well. Very sweet, with a maple/vanilla flavor. Together it was just an awesome combination. This box of cookies will not last too long in my closet  ;]

Overall, another delicious find from Trader Joe’s. I would certainly buy these again. Perfect on it’s own, or I’m even tempted to try them with a smear of peanut butter or a glass of milk. A drawback would be the 2 grams of saturated fat per cookie and that it lacks fiber, but these really are delicious! 4 1/2 stars

Chocolite Chocolate Crispy Caramel

Author: Healthnuttxo

I happen to be a fan of some of the products made by Chocolite. Some of the ones I tried have been sugar free and a tasty option for me compared to standard chocolate. Along with the others I was sent for free to try, I also received the Chocolate Crispy Caramel candies. There are 2 of them in a pack, and rather decently sized. They were bumpy in consistency and covered with chocolate.

I took a bite of one of the candies and noticed it had a slight crunch to it- perhaps this is where the “Crispy” part comes from in the name. It was sweet and very chewy from the caramel. I have a love/hate relationship with caramel. I like the flavor, but too much of it turns me off because it’s so chewy! However, these chocolates had just the right amount of caramel to give it flavor, without making me chew too much. The chocolate on the outside was smooth and tasted like milk chocolate. I noticed as I ate these they had somewhat of a salty flavor to them- I NEEDED a glass of water!

Overall, pretty good.  I liked that they were sugar free and had 6 grams of fiber per piece! 4 stars.

Are you a fan of caramel? If so, what’s your favorite food/treat involving caramel?

Trader Joe’s Breaded Chickenless Nuggets

Author: Healthnuttxo

Last night, a dinner of mashed potatoes, broccoli, and pork was served. Well, at least for everyone else. I however, swapped the pork for something new I got at Trader Joe’s, the Breaded Chickenless Nuggets. I cooked these for about 15 minutes or so. Here’s how they looked

Although they seem kind of big in the picture, they actually were quite tiny. I would say they were actually a bit smaller than a standard chicken nugget. However, when I bit into one, I noticed that they were rather thick and had a “meaty” texture, which made up for the small size.

The texture was actually one of the best parts. There was no sogginess or weird chewiness involved, and it had the texture of really a chicken nugget. The breading didn’t add much flavor, but just provided a light crispness to the outside. At first, I totally thought they tasted identical to chicken nuggets. However, as I kept eating them, I did notice a slight soy taste, which I always think tastes slightly like a barbeque flavor (who knows?)

Overall, pretty tasty. Next time I’ll probably eat them with applesauce as well as the rest of my meal. I did like that 4 pieces has 5 grams of fiber and 12 grams of protein, and 0 grams of sugar. Impressive, and certainly filling! 4 stars

What’s better than peanut butter? How about when it’s COMBINED with almond AND cashew butter? =)

I was at Target the other day and this product caught my eye. Since I’m a huge fan of peanut butter (which you probably know by now), I thought there was no way I couldn’t like this, seeing as I do also like almond butter and cashew butter.

After purchasing the jar, it was about $5, I opened it up. There wasn’t a lot of oil on top, but it had that “loose” consistency to it, so it definitely needed a stir. After stirring it I took a taste and thought one thing this is some PASTY nut butter! It is so thick, and kind of has that consistency where a glass of milk or water or something is needed to wash it down. Unbelieveable! The taste was predominantly almonds, with some peanut flavor as well. I didn’t really taste much cashew flavor, which was a bit disappointing, but I don’t think cashews don’t have a very strong flavor to begin with. There was just a hint of saltyness, like a sea salt flavor, at the end that added a nice touch.

Overall, it is a rather delicious spread, but I cannot eat this out of the jar with a spoon without something to drink. I think it would be absolutely great on bread with sliced bananas and honey. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’m going to have that for lunch…soon! 4 stars

Vitalicious BlueBran VitaTop

Author: Healthnuttxo

I got some free stuff from Vitalicious a little while ago, and since I couldn’t possibly eat them all, I froze them. One of the flavors I froze and then did a quick heat-up in the microwave was the BlueBran flavor. When I opened it up, I thought it resembled the Cran Bran flavor I had tried (and loved!) in the past, except with blueberries.

The stats were impressive. 1 BlueBran VitaTop was 100 calories, with 5 grams of fiber and only 9 grams of sugar. I took a bite, and thought it was pretty good. It was mildly sweet,  with a pretty good amount of blueberries embedded in the VitaTop. It was chewy, a bit “grainy”,  and had a whole wheat flavor. Also, it was kind of like the Cran Bran flavor, but with blueberries, just as I had suspected.

Overall, 3 1/2 stars. I can picture this to be quite tasty with a Blueberry Chobani Yogurt, or even a glass of milk. Mmm!

Have you ever had a Vita Top? What’s your favorite flavor?

The other day, craving a frozen sweet treat, I went to Red Mango on the way home from a morning of shopping (gotta refuel!!). I happen to like Red Mango frozen yogurt- it has more tart flavors than other frozen yogurt places, but to me it feels more natural and more like plain yogurt. I went up to the counter and ordered a small dark chocolate frozen yogurt with organic granola, and it came to be a little under 5 dollars. Probably the only thing that prevents me from eating frozen yogurt more frequently is the price. For the most part, wherever I go, a small with a  topping is usually around 5 dollars, give or take. Not super expensive of course, but not something I can afford to buy every single day (although I totally would if I could! =)  )

Anyway – I took my fro yo to the car and took a picture. Here’s how it looked

Props to Red Mango for presentation. That is one pretty-looking yogurt!

So I dug into the frozen yogurt, trying just the dark chocolate frozen yogurt first. It had a sort of sherbet/ice-like texture. Not super creamy like frozen yogurts I have had in the past which I think resemble soft serve ice cream, but a little more stiff. It was sweet and chocolately, almost like chocolate milk, and not too tart, which I liked. The granola on top was also delicious. Big pieces of pumpkin seeds, little flax seeds, and good flavor. Nice and crunchy, and it added just the right touch to the frozen yogurt that it didn’t overwhelm the flavor, but enhanced it.

Overall, delicious! I would certainly get this combination again. If I had to judge them separately, I would give the yogurt 4 1/2 stars as I wish it was a bit creamier, and the granola 4 stars, but I would give it 4 1/2 stars as a whole. They complimented each other quite nicely, and it was a nice way to relax a bit after a hectic morning of shopping.

What’s your favorite topping to get on frozen yogurt? I’m usually a granola or fruit kind-of girl :0)

I’m pretty sure snickerdoodles are my FAVORITE type of cookies. I love the cinnamon sugar flavor, and the chewiness that they have. I was offered a free box of the Snickerdoodle Cookies from Enjoy Life, and was excited to try them. I recently reviewed the Lively Lemon flavor of these cookies I also was sent to try, and thought they were pretty good.

Some quick words about these cookies, according to the box, they are nut free, gluten free, wheat free, dairy free, peanut free, egg free, fish free, soy free and shellfish free.

I opened up the box, and like the Lively Lemon cookies, these cookies were kind of small. Like I stated before, they are about the size of a Snapple cap, but 1 serving is 2 cookies as stated on the box.

I took a bite, and found them to be very moist, chewy, and almost fudgy in consistency.  I actually really liked the texture, almost like a cake-cookie. They certainly weren’t like any Snickerdoodle I have eaten before, but they were still pretty good. A deep cinnamon flavor, and almost a bit of a burnt flavor as well. They were sweet without being too sweet, and even though there wasn’t molasses on the ingredient list, the flavor reminded me of something sweetened with molasses.

Overall, pretty good, and quite unique. I would probably eat these again, and I also love how the ingredient list was rather short- 4 stars.
