Cappuccino LARABar

Author: Healthnuttxo

Something new! Don’t you all love new products!? (:

I got a very nice card and some free Cappuccino LARABars from the company a week or so ago (happy holidays to me!) I opened up the box and saw four bars of a flavor I never heard of or saw before- Cappuccino. This might be interesting, I thought. I used to hate coffee/ anything coffee related, but now I am a coffee convert. Thanks all nighters and piles upon piles of work that need to be done and the caffeine boost needed to do it. *sigh*

No, but really. Thanks to the endless work, I now love coffee. And coffee Keurigs are world’s greatest invention. Thank you to the inventor- you are are genius.

ANYWAY, the bars are gluten free, vegan, dairy and soy free, and made with minimal ingredients which I love. I opened up the bar and instantly smelled the coffee aroma. Observing the bar, it looked like a standard LARABar, but I also noticed rather large pieces of almonds.

I took a bite. The familiar date/fruity taste a LARABar often has was there, but not super prominent. I could taste the coffee flavor, but it wasn’t super strong. It had a bit of an awkward bite at the end, like a spice of some sort. I checked the ingredients and didn’t see any spices, so I’m going to say the coffee added that bit of a bite at the end.

The bar was soft, dense and chewy but had the slightly crunchier parts from the almond pieces. It was really satisfying as a snack and curbed my hunger well (almond always take away my hunger pains!). The bar was sweet but not too sweet, and overall pretty good.

As a whole, I’d give this one a 3.5 star rating. I don’t think it’s my favorite, but it was pretty good. My favorites will always be this one and the cookie dough bar!

Which LARABar is your favorite?! (:

So, as IF we need any more sweet treats to eat during the holidays, I’m reviewing another sugary snack. But really,  HOW do you say no to a product like this?? Did I already eat cookies upon cookies upon cakes this holiday? YES. Did I already have cabinets stocked full of munchies? YES. Did I need another snack? NO!!. Should I have saved my money since it’s the holiday season and I need to spend it elsewhere? YES!

But did I buy it anyway? You bet. ; )

Popcorn, Indiana Drizzled Cinnamon Sugar Kettlecorn sounds absolutely amazing. And that’s because it is. Starting with the serving size. 1 cup. But is it really 1 cup? As you recall, from this review, the actual amount of popcorn I got was depressing.

This one? I GOT A WHOLE CUP! And I weighed it too. 28 grams.

I tried a few pieces. Mmm. Crunchy popcorn, with a white chocolate tasting drizzle on top and on most of the pieces. There was certainly a predominant cinnamon flavor, and the popcorn was mildly  sweet by itself, but very sweet for the pieces with the drizzle.

Eating it, it reminded me of a cinnamon bun. With the cinnamon flavor and the drizzle coming together like icing on a cinnabun. In other words, I could seriously eat this all day long. DANGEROUS! Especially during this season with all those buttery and sugary treats coming my way! Ahh!

Overall, this crunchy, sweet, cinnamony goodness gets 4.5 stars. Such a delicious treat, but it is rather high in sugar so I can’t eat too much since I am a Diabetic : ) (Although there was so not 6  servings in this! I think I only ate it like 3 times and I measured for the most part! Boo!)

What’s your favorite combination? Cinnamon and sugar definitely is one of mine!

*sigh* should have taken another picture. Threw out the bag. MY BAD!

Clif Bar Peppermint Stick Energy Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

Officially holiday season! Christmas and Hanukkah are approaching quick! So in spirit, a holiday themed treat.

Clif Bar sent me their Peppermint Stick Clif Bar. I happen to love these energy bars, so I was excited!

The bar was standard in terms of texture for a Clif Bar. Chewy and dense, soft and had a few oats scrambled around. was sort of fruity minty. Like bubble-mint toothpaste in a way. You know when it’s slighty sweet like bubblegum but also minty. At first I took a bite and it had that standard Clif bar taste, slightly fruity/date flavor, but then in comes a peppermint flavor. Not super strong, but you definitely can taste it. In fact if you can’t taste it, you might need to get your taste buds evaluated ; )

But then some bites were different. Another bite had a very mild mint flavor and a bit of a white chocolate flavor. Hmm. I also saw streaks of red throughout the bar, not BIG streaks, but a mild red. I searched the ingredient list and saw peppermint candy, which not only explained the red but also the stronger peppermint flavors in some bites.

I normally go for energy bars early in the morning, when it’s too early for a full breakfast/I want to work out early. However, I took one bite of this and couldn’t do it. It was too strong for a morning tummy/ taste buds to handle (or at least mine anyway) so I ended up eating it later on in the day.

I got this bar for free, but I can’t say I would buy it again. I wasn’t really a fan, it was just ok. I like that it was seasonal and wintry with the peppermint, and I think it’s great if you really like peppermint. However, the only time I like minty things is when I brush my teeth or chew a piece of gum. This didn’t really work for me.

The nutrition facts seem pretty standard for a Clif Bar. Although a bit high in sugar for a bar that’s about the size of my palm. 2 stars

Peppermint? Yay or nay? I would say I’m average- I do like York Peppermint Patties! But, I would much rather have some christmas cookies than a candy cane!

Crumbs Raspberry Hamentashen

Author: Healthnuttxo

Hamentashen.

Yes, I had no idea what it was when I bought it. So if you know, props to you. I was told by a friend that it was a Jewish cookie, and to this moment that’s all I still really know about it. (So please, if you know anything, let me know!)

Regardless, amongst all the heavily frosted cupcakes and cookies available at Crumbs, I picked the Hamentashen. I didn’t want an overload of sugar, but I wanted something sweet and delicious. I picked up one of these for a little over 2 dollars each, and got the Raspberry flavor.

When I picked the Hamentashen, the lady behind the counter was confused. She asked why I purchased such a “grown up” cookie amongst all the cookies and cupcakes. Uhoh. Would this taste good??

The cookie basically had a “cookie/dry” part and a fruity/jam-like center. When I first tasted it, it reminded me of pie. And…I LOVE PIE.

The cookie part was crunchy on the outer edges, but as you get closer to the middle it was super soft, like the inner pie crust. It was buttery tasting and mildly sweet, and kind of reminded me of a butter/shortbread cookie.

The fruit on the inside, not scarce at all, was smooth and sweet, and also very fresh. I was afraid raspberry would be overly tart, but it wasn’t. It had a mild bit of tartness, and that’s it. AND, there was a lot of fruit filling!  To prove it, here’s a little pic

Overall, yes, it’s not a SUPER sugary cookie, but it was rather big (about size of my hand) and really good! I’ve already bought a couple more after eating my first one, and they do not disappoint! And, only 110 calories! Which is awesome given the 500-600+ calorie cupcakes/treats there!

4.5 stars

What’s your FAVORITE holiday cookie or cookie in general ( besides chocolate chip!)? I really love oatmeal raisin 🙂

Justin’s Nut Butter Maple Almond Butter

Author: Healthnuttxo

I finally bought a jar of this stuff. I pass by it almost every time I go to Whole Foods (probably because I ALWAYS go down the nut butter aisle).

What stops me? This jar of Justin’s Nut Butter was so good, so why not buy another?

the 10 dollar price tag. My wallet cries everytime I buy nut butter. So pricy. But so worth it. Keep on crying, wallet.

So I bought this nut butter, and home it went. I opened it up and noticed considerably oil separation, so a little stirring and I stored it upside down ( a trick I learned from a friend! keeps the oil on the bottom!!) until I got to try it.

Yea I eat my nut butters with plastic forks. Don’t you?

The first thing I noticed- it was THICK. I tried this when I was already a bit thirsty, and that was a mistake. It literally stuck to my mouth. So, have some water on hand!

It had a mild sweetness, and mild maple flavor. The predominant flavor is definitely ALMOND. It has the gritty texture I find most almond butters do, and every now and then a rush of salty flavor would happen. It was a bit “pasty” but not bad.

And while it’s quite good, it’s not amazing. I wish it was sweeter, or saltier, or both. I wish I could taste the maple flavor more, because I’m not sure I would be able to say “this is MAPLE almond butter” if I was given a blind taste test. And you know me (or hopefully you have picked up on) and that I LOVE maple flavored things. (Like these cookies? YUMM!)

Overall, 3 stars. I don’t know if I would buy this again, especially since it is 10 dollars,  but I want to try more Justin’s Nut Butters! Just have to save up some money first…. =P

Whats the most you EVER spent on nut butter??

Trader Joe’s Spiced Apple Bread Mix

Author: Healthnuttxo

I’m all about homemade baking. I’d much rather bake chocolate chip cookies from scratch than buy the prepared versions. Something about the flavor, and the, ahem, love, that goes along with a homemade cookie. However, every now and then, a prepared version suffices. I spotted Trader Joe’s Spiced Apple Bread Mix at the store and couldn’t resist. Being the apple and carb fanatic I am (oh carbs…how I love thee) I figured this would be beyond delicious 🙂

So, I preheated the oven and got mixing.

Here’s the goods! It needed 2 eggs, milk (I used skim), butter, and the mix.

See the bumps?! Don't blame my mixing skills....it's actual dried apple pieces!

*insert baking time in oven here*

And…. fresh outta the oven!

Finished product. Everything is better with powdered sugar…. 😉

So….looks pretty. How’s it taste?

It was actually pretty good! It has a very deep flavor, and I could really taste the spices. All spice and cinnamon were the most predominant flavors, and there was almost a bit of a caramel flavor as well. The bread really reminded me of pumpkin too, for the dark color and the spiced flavor. The bread was sweet, but not over the top, so I think it’s acceptable to put the powdered sugar on for some added sweetness after I was suggested to do so.

It was soft and fluffy, with crispier edges, with dried apple pieces for added texture. I didn’t think it was super apple-y in flavor, but it still was an enjoyable bread. I think I’ll eat it again with a smear of peanut butter or butter after warming it up in the toaster oven.

It also lacked fiber and was a bit high in sugar, so this bread gets a total rating of 4 stars. Trader Joe’s really never disappoints me with their products, and I hope they never do!!

What about you? Do you make mostly homemade or store-bough/semi-prepared products? What are your favorites?!

And the nutritional facts. It was kind of high in sugar.

Corazonas Banana Walnut Oatmeal Square

Author: Healthnuttxo

I have a confession.

I’m obsessed with banana flavored things. Banana bread, banana ice cream, banana yogurt (yes! they make it!). I DONT like fake banana (aka laffy taffy) but real banana flavored things I absolutely adore. Which, go figure, I find weird because I’m not all that crazy about bananas themselves. Hmm.

So, I got this free Corazonas Banana Walnut Oatmeal Square from the company to review, and I was pumped. BANANA walnut. Even if it was Banana spinach flavored oatmeal square I probably would have been excited. Ok, maybe I’m overexaggerating, but let’s just get it out there that I love banana.

Who nibbled my bar!?!?! oh wait…

So, pregym, I had this bar with a scoopful of peanut butter. It was one of those mornings where I DID NOT want to wake up early and have a proper breakfast before the gym, so a granola bar would suffice. Although, always prepare for the munchies later on if you don’t have a big breakfast! Or at least that’s the case for me!

ANYWAY- this square was really quite good. It was soft, chewy and dense, and you could really taste the banana. It tasted like genuine and real banana for the most part, but did have a tinge of that “artificial flavor” feel to it. But not too bad. And not like laffy taffy (sorry to those who love laffy taffy- can’t do that fake banana flavor!!).

There was a slight cinnamon flavor, and it was certainly sweet! The oats gave it a hearty texture and it was a rather satisfying bar. I felt energized during my workout (trust me, I hardly sleep anymore so I definitely didn’t get the energy from a solid 8 hours of sleep!   ) and I couldn’t get over how banana-y it was. The whole “walnut” aspect of this bar was lackluster for me. I don’t even know if I remember tasting them?? Magical walnuts perhaps…?

Anyway- 4 stars. A good bar. I would buy it in the future.

I'm such a fail at taking pictures of nutritional facts. Boo.
