Another new flavor for me to try from Zone Perfect on their Perfectly Simple line. This time, Cranberry Almond, which I also received in the mail to try for free.

I looked at the stats before indulging in the snack. 170 calories, 10 grams of protein, 4 grams of fat, 19 grams os sugar ( a little high for me), gluten free, and made with 10 ingredients (bonus points here! Less ingredients something is made with in my book, the better!)

I opened up the bar and saw a light brown colored bar, with visible chunks of nuts and pieces. I took a bite, and was pleasantly surprised. It had a cranberry-pomegranate flavor, and also had apple flavored undertones. It was sweet without being overly sweet, but more of a fruit-kind-of-sweet.. It had that tang that cranberries and pomegranates have, but wasn’t so tangy that it was intolerable. The almonds added a tiny bit of a crunch, which was nice, and provided a mild flavor.

What I noticed about this bar, similar to the last Coconut flavored bar I tried, was it’s “piecy” consistency. The last bar I tried was Toasted Coconut, so I chalked up the “piecy-ness” to the flakes of coconut. However, as I chewed this bar, I noticed it was kind of piecy in consistency as well. After looking at the dry ingredients, I assume it’s from the sweetened cranberries and pieces of each individual ingredient.

Overall, a good bar! I liked the flavor, although it was a tad on the tangy side, and the bar was dense and had a nice chew to it. Not my favorite, but I would eat it again if the opportunity arose or if I saw it in the stores. 3 stars

Something new to try! I got a free box in the mail from Zone Perfect that had three new bars of theirs from the “Perfectly Simple” line. Inside was a Toasted Coconut flavor, Peanut Crunch and Cranberry Almond. All of the bars are gluten free, have some protein in them, and have minimal ingredients.

I decided to try the Toasted Coconut bar first. I opened the bar and it didn’t look as I expected. It was a rather dull color, with bits of what looked like nuts or coconut shreds and a rather dense bar. I broke off a piece, and realized it was a little dense.

After taking a bite, I actually enjoyed it. A good amount of sweetness, it has a yummy coconut flavor balanced with some almond flavor as well. What I didn’t really like was the consistency. Although I appreciate that there’s actual coconut in this bar, it had that flaky/shredded coconut consistency when you bit into the bar. With every bite I felt shreds of coconut between my teeth. Some people like that, I happen to not, but that’s just me.

However, the flavor made up for it. Loved the flavor, and the chewiness that the bar had to provide. I also like that it only has 8 ingredients, is gluten free, and has 10 grams of protein per bar. The bar’s first ingredient is also a form of sugar, which I didn’t like. It is also a tad high in calories, this one is 200, and while I feel I can get many other bars with way more protein, I enjoyed this bar minus the consistency.

Overall, 3.5  stars.

Yummy! More protein-filled finds.

NOW, when it comes to protein, I think closest to nature is best. Chicken breast, eggs, turkey, things like that. However, a nice switch up every now and then is definitely called for and satisfies a craving. Today’s find? These vegetarian Morning Star Farms Maple Flavored Sausage Patties!

We all know how much I adore maple, right? 😉

I’ll admit the ingredients aren’t perfect as I’d like them to be, but the nutritional facts pack a nice punch to make up for it. 80 calories a patty and 10 grams of protein- that I like!

I cooked these up in a skillet with some non cook spray. I also added a wee but of SF Maple Syrup for fun. They ended up cooking soft on the inside, and nice and crispy on the outside.

Upon first bite? YES! These were certainly delicious. They had a smoked flavor, and were slightly sweet from the maple. They tasted just like regular sausage! The consistency on the inside had some texture, kind of like a veggie burger, but was very soft. I think next time I may even add more maple syrup for more enhanced flavor 🙂

Overall, delicious! I will definitely buy these again. I’m a little bummed there’s only 6 in a box, and I ate 3 at a time which can be expensive. However, I think they’re a great addition to my protein family I call the fridge/freezer. And 10 grams of protein is great for a little patty! 4.5 stars

What’s your favorite protein-filled food? Mine is ground turkey (lean of course!). Perfect for burgers and meatloaf!

MHP Power Pak High Protein Pudding

Author: Healthnuttxo

It may be of no surprise that I am a complete healthy food and fitness nut. Egg whites, protein powders, vegetables, whole grains, and peanut butter are staples of my diet, as well as spinning, free weights, and kickboxing as my main forms of exercise. Lately I’ve upped the exercise intensity so I also had to increase the amount of protein and calories.

Let’s just say eating 6-11 egg whites a day gets pricy, and, well, monotonous. As some kind of change up, I went browsing for some high protein foods, such as bars, shakes and other goodies. Online, I found the  MHP Power Pak High Protein Pudding which I definitely wanted to try. Pudding? 30 grams of protein? Low sugar? Low carbs? COUNT ME IN!

It was a bit pricy, at $2.99 a can, but I figured it was worth a try. I opened up the can and saw a thick, light brown colored pudding. It looked a bit “moussy”, but no doubt, it was thick and creamy.

I took a spoonful. It had a good chocolate flavor, and was mildly sweet but not sugary tasting at all. It did have that chocolate protein powder/shake taste to it, but not too overpowering. It was very thick and creamy, which I enjoyed, as it gave it some sustenance. I wouldn’t say it was WOW this is amazing! But it definitely wasn’t bad at all. I found it was a little too much by itself, so I mixed in some Lite Cool Whip. And…

What a great idea! It was really good and the mild sweetness of the Cool Whip went well with the thickness and chocolate-y flavor of the pudding. I may even crumble some graham cracker crumbs (or Annie’s Bunny Grahams!) on top next time for a twist on pudding pie 🙂

Overall, 4 stars. Would love to buy more of these, just so dang expensive! However, love that it’s low in sugar, low in carbs, high in calcium, and has 30 grams of protein for a can! NICE!!! I may have to splurge and buy, oh I don’t know, a dozen more or so… 😉

I love when I get new products to try, and when new surprises await me in the mailbox or outside my door. To my surprise, I found a little bag from Larabar with some of their new bars, Uber bars, which are sweet and salty fruit and nut bars.

I LOVE fruit and nut bars. Satisfying, sweet, crunchy, and just an awesome snack. Given I also love Larabar because they use minimal ingredients when making their products, I had a feeling these were going to be good 🙂

I got 4 flavors. Bananas Foster, Cherry Cobbler, Apple Turnover, and Roasted Nut Roll.

First one up? Bananas Foster. HAD to try this one first, as I love anything Banana flavored! This one had only 14 carbohydrates, which impressed me, but had 17 grams of fat. I see that as a lot for a snack, but at least it’s heathy fat from walnuts and such.

The taste was pretty good! It reminded me of a banana walnut muffin at first, when you take the first biteand the muffin top is full of walnut pieces. It had a banana flavor, and the walnuts were nice and crunchy, however, the bar was still pretty soft in consistency. There was a bit of an awkward saltiness to it however. Like a little too salty. Don’t get me wrong, it was good. I just think the saltiness outweighed the sweet, and I kind of wish I could throw a chocolate chip or something in there.

However, a good bar! Unique in flavor, and I loved how the consistency was both crunchy yet soft, and the minimal ingredients. This one gets 3.5 stars

Next up, Cherry Cobbler.

This one was very soft. I mostly tasted the almonds at first, with a little bit of a tart/sweet background. Some bites better than others in regards to sweetness. The pecans and almonds were the predominant flavor, and it was crunchy yet soft in consistency. The bar itself is not really sweet- its mostly tart and then has a salty after taste. However, I LOVE the buttery flavor from the pecans 😀

Overall, I liked banana one better. 3 stars

NEXT, Apple Turnover.

All I can say is YUM YUM YUM. It was buttery, crunchy yet soft, and tasted like apple pie :D. It was sweet, had pieces of dried apples and raisins, and it didn’t have so much of that “salty” thing going on, which I liked. In a nutshell (hah), it was super delicious, and it was sticky! There was a little bit of tartness every now and then, and I felt like I definitely needed some water. I thought it was mostly almond flavor for the nuts, but it was actually walnuts!

4.5 stars. My favorite!

Last up, The Roasted Nut Roll.

This one was also good! It was not too sweet, which I liked, and the flavors and crunchiness of the nuts really shined though. It had a bit of that salty taste, but the mild sweetness and saltiness worked REALLY well. Plus, I loved the roasted almond flavor! 4 stars

Overall, really good bars! I like the Uber line, and will definitely buy if I see them in the future. I got my 4 to try for free, and I’m glad I got the chance to try them!

The nutritional information of each bar is similiar, but here is one of the bars stats.
