CredibleCravings organic whole food bars

Author: Healthnuttxo

I have a new product to review!

CredibleCravings sent me a few of their organic whole food bars to try. According to the label, these bars are “developed to support the nutritional needs of women before, during, and after pregnancy”. They are organic, have no GMOs, have probiotics, free of soy, and are made with no artificial sweeteners. And ALTHOUGH I am not pregnant… I could still use some whole goodness in my life!

The bars come in 3 flavors- Lemon Ginger Greens, Oatmeal Cranberry, and Chocolate. *Naturally* I tried the chocolate flavor first 🙂

The chocolate flavor is on the sweeter side, and has almost a raspberry flavor to it. It is dense, chewy and very moist, with chocolate chips scattered throughout the bar, and a prominent chocolate flavor. There is a slight crunch to it, probably from some of the added seeds. Some bites were a little on the sweet side, but it was very good! My favorite of the 3. 4 stars

Next, the Lemon Ginger Greens, was my least favorite of the 3. The flavor was okay. If I had a word to describe it, it would be “earthy”. I could almost taste the kale or some type of green the bar was made with. The lemon flavor was definitely there, some bites more prominent than others. The bigger lemon flavor I detected, the better I liked the bar. The ginger was sort of an aftertaste, but it provided just a zing of flavor on the tongue. It was okay, but I wouldn’t eat it again. However, I have had some “greens” types of bars and this is definitely one of the better ones. 2 1/2 stars

Lastly, Oatmeal Cranberry. This bar was good too! It was on the sweeter side, with a nice cranberry flavor. It had a little bit of tartness, but not too much, and just the perfect amount of sweetness to balance it out. The bar reminded me of oatmeal, and almost had a “hearty” texture to it from the oats and the crunch from the seeds. I enjoyed this one. I would eat it again. 4 stars

Here is a pic of the bars: Top= Chocolate, Middle= Oatmeal Cranberry, Bottom= Lemon Ginger Greens

Thanks CredibleCravings!

KIND Chewy With A Crunch bars

Author: Healthnuttxo

Hey guys!

I got a nice shipment of new Chewy with a Crunch bars, courtesy of KIND, to do a review on! I used to be a KIND addict- they had they’re yummy granola bars with the nuts in them at my dining hall. I would use up a LOT of my “dining dollars” on those babies!

So even though my diet has strayed and I do not eat those bars as frequently anymore, I was still pretty excited to try these new bars.

The Chewy with a Crunch bars are gluten free, made with 100% whole grains, are non GMO, and made with minimal ingredients. So let’s get started!

Peanut Butter Dark Chocolate- This one was not too sweet, and had a mild peanut butter flavor. It was a little blander than I would have wanted or expected it to be (peanut butter chocolate is a strong combo in my eyes!) but it was still rather yummy. The chocolate chips added a very nice touch and were definitely necessary. I liked how this bar had a nice crunch but was still chewy- living up to it’s name! 3 1/2 stars

Dark Chocolate Chunk- this one was my favorite! It tasted nearly identical to a Quaker Chewy Chocolate Chip bar, but a tad less sweeter. It was very good! It had a nice vanilla flavor in the background, and the dark chocolate chunks actually tasted like milk chocolate to me, which was a plus in my eyes since I prefer milk chocolate. 4 1/2 stars

Oats & Honey with Toasted Coconut- this bar was pretty good! I liked that you could taste both the toasted coconut, some mild sweetness from the honey, and that it had a baked from the oven granola kind of taste. It had a nice amount of sweetness, and I found it crunchier than the other bars. 3 1/2 stars

Vanilla Blueberry- this one had moderate flavor, was a little bland, but was certainly saved by the baby blueberries scattered throughout the bar. The vanilla flavor was sort of muted, but once you bit into a blueberry, it lightened up the whole bar, and made it much better. The blueberries themselves were tiny and sweet, and had a good flavor. 3 stars

Maple Pumpkin Seeds with Sea Salt- I found this bar awkwardly salty. It was good, but it had an off flavor. It wasn’t too sweet, and it had a nice amount of pumpkin seeds scattered throughout the bar. The maple flavor is off…and maple is one of my favorite flavors. Overall the bar was lackluster, and I was not a fan. 2 stars

Nutritional information varies per bar(but is roughly the same). Here is the Nutritional Information for the Oats & Honey with Toasted Coconut

Quest Nutrition Cookies & Cream Quest Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

QUEST BARS!

I have been a fan of these bars for almost 2 years when I got a box to try from the company. Since then, I have been hooked. They seem to almost have blown up in popularity, and well deserved…these things are delicious and perfect when you are on a strict diet and need something high in fiber, low in sugar, and high in protein.

I’m sure almost everyone has heard of the new flavor of Quest Bars that came out recently- Cookies & Cream!! I got a free box of these bars to try, and I was pretty excited about it.

I mean come on…look at this bar. You can see “cookie crumbs” and chunks of white creamy “chocolate”!

First lets talk nutrition. This bar is GLUTEN FREE!, 180 calories, 7 grams fof fat (3 of which are saturated), 310 mg of sodium, 22 grams of carbohydrate (17 of which are fiber), 1 gram of sugar, 2 grams of Erythritol (sugar alcohol), and 21 g of protein.

I use Quest bars as a snack, as I usually eat 3 meals and 2 snacks, or I’ll eat half when I have those bad hunger pains that just will NOT relent. The nutrition facts are quite awesome- not TOO high in fat, nice amount of fiber (which is ideal for me since I am a Diabetic for glucose control) and only 1 gram of sugar.

Okay, that’s all cool but how does it taste?
The bar is honestly, amazing. It’s my new favorite flavor. It’s chewy and dense, sweet but not overly sweet. The white chocolate chunks are creamy and have a vanilla flavor to them, reminiscent of the cream in an Oreo cookie. The cookie crumbs scattered in the bar is what won me over. Crunchy and tastes very similar to a cookie!! When you find a part of the bar with a huge piece of cookie crumbs or the white chocolate it is like hitting lotto— cookies & cream lotto 😉

Overall, I love these. I always order directly from the site, because I feel like they are freshest and softest from the website. These get 5 stars from me. I honestly can’t complain about a thing.

Q- What is your favorite protein bar? Or what is your favorite Quest Bar flavor? Leave me a comment below 🙂

Another round of Quest Bar reviews! I love these things! I am very grateful the people over at Quest Bar sent me a generous sample box for free so I can try all of their flavors. Today’s review will be of the Chocolate Peanut Butter, Strawberry Cheesecake and Peanut Butter Supreme Quest Bars. As always, these bars are gluten free, high in fiber and low in sugar! Woo!

Let’s do the Chocolate Peanut Butter first. (Because why not??! :p)

This bar was soft and chewy, and significantly more chewy than the other bars I have tried. It had a bit of an odd flavor, and I felt it tasted a bit artificial. I can see how it would be labeled a “chocolate peanut butter” flavored bar, as I detected elements of both. It was certainly a sweet chocolate peanut butter flavor rather than a savory one. I do think the chocolate flavor overpowered the peanut butter, and the peanut butter flavor was rather mild. It was a good bar, but not my favorite. 3 stars

Next up, Strawberry Cheesecake.

This one was YUMMY. Dare I say…it replicated a strawberry cheesecake almost perfectly? Or to the best of the ability that a bar could do? It had a slight tart yet sweet flavor from the strawberries, yet a subtle cream cheese flavor as well. The flavors complimented each other quite beautifully, and I found myself almost happy eating this bar. It was SO good! Very moist, and the perfect mouthfeel. I loved how I could actually detect and taste the strawberries as well. 4.5 stars

Lastly, the Peanut Butter Supreme bar.

This one was also quite tasty. A good amount of peanut butter flavor, which I certainly liked. I found it to be a little more salty than sweet, and quite dense. I enjoyed the bits of nuts dispersed throughout the bar as it added extra texture and crunch to the bar. I think if it was a tad sweeter and a tad less salty, I would have liked it more. However, still a good bar, but a little on the bland side. 3.5 stars

Overall, Quest Bars seem to be a hit. I have liked pretty much every flavor that I have tried! 🙂

Here is the nutrition of the Strawberry Cheesecake Bar

I got some new, free  bars from Health Warrior. Their Chia Bars! All of the bars are vegan, a good source of omegas, and have 100-110 calories.

The first bar I tried was the Chocolate Peanut Butter. LOADED with seeds, this one had a crunchy texture. It was a bit bland, with very mild chocolate flavor. I didn’t detect too much peanut butter flavor as well. It wasn’t really all that sweet, but for some reason, I kind of liked it. It was nutty, and tasted very real and unprocessed. Was it amazing tasting and my favorite thing ever? No. But I liked the wholesome-ness it provided. However, kindof misleading for the fact I hardly tasted any chocolate or peanut butter flavor. (sad for a pb lover like me!) 2 1/2 stars.

Next up, the the Acai Berry.

A bit darker in color than the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor, but still loaded with those seeds 🙂 This bar was a bit softer, and had a sweeter flavor too it.  I liked it much more than the Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor. It had a raspberry/pomegranate/cranberry flavor, and had a subtle tartness. It was sweet, but not too sweet, and seemed to be less crunch than the chocolate peanut butter variety. It also almost had a buttery taste to it, which I really enjoyed. Yum! 4 stars

Lastly, the coconut variety.

The softest bar of the three, and very good. Yummy coconut flavor, but none of those annoying coconut shreds (sorry…I had those haha). A mild crunch, and good flavor. It was moist and chewy, and definitely tasted coconut, without it feeling artificial or overpowering. It also had a subtle sweetness, which I enjoyed.  I liked this one as well! 3 1/2 stars.

Overall, not bad! I liked the Acai Berry one the best, and I think these are a good snack bar for in-between meals! Thanks Health Warrior for letting me try these new bars!

MORE new flavors to try thanks to the kind folks over at Quest Bar :] This time around, it’s Quest Bar’s Lemon Cream Pie, Peanut Butter & Jelly, and Apple Pie. All of those sound absolutely decadent, no? Now how would they taste in bar form? Let’s see…. 🙂

FIRST UP on this gluten free, high fiber and no sugar added line of bars is the Lemon Cream Pie.

Ok…now this one is GOOD! The flavor almost reminds me of lemon skittles, which sounds kind of weird but it’s not at all! It’s very moist and chewy, and very fresh tasting. Seriously…I was gushing over this bar while I was eating it (“Oh my GOSH THIS IS GOOD!” haha). What’s weird is I am not a lemon kind of gal…I normally pass on lemon flavored things. But this one had the perfect amount of sweetness, and wasn’t tart at all. The mouth feel of the bar is also really great. JUST PERFECT!!! 5 stars :]

Next up, Peanut Butter & Jelly.

Now you probably predict another 5 star review, huh? Thinking, mannnnn Lisa loves peanut butter she must love this bar. Actually, this was my least favorite! :[ It was considerably denser than the other bars and not as moist. It wasn’t really sweet, and had kind of a combination of a “toast” and peanut flavor, with slight and sweet undertones of a berry/ jelly flavor.  I did like the little peanuts in the bar which added a little crunch 🙂 3 1/2 stars

Lastly, Apple Pie.

Yummy! This bar was chewy and sweet, and definitely had a great flavor. I could detect a nice cinnamon flavor throughout the bar, but not much of an “apple” flavor unless you bit into an actual piece of dried apple. I DID like the fact that there were scattered dried apple skins in the bar, which added a yummy and sweet apple flavor. However, the skins were sporadic, so there were bites where I had just the bar/cinnamon dominant flavor. However, I still enjoyed this bar and would eat again. 4 stars

Annnnnnd here’s the nutritional facts for the Apple Pie Bar.

Quest Bar Cinnamon Roll & Coconut Cashew

Author: Healthnuttxo

The LOVELY people over at Quest Bar sent me a  free sample box of 11 of their products, the QuestBar.

What’s a QUESTBAR you ask? This particular line of protein bars states it is “the only protein bar with a perfect nutritional profile” according to the insert I was sent alongside the bars. Each bar has 20 grams of protein, 4-6 grams of “non fiber carbs”,  has no added sugar, no soy protein, and is gluten free.

I got the box yesterday, and already tried 2 of the bars. (Eager beaver over here 😉 )

The first one I tried was Coconut Cashew.

It was a tan colored bar, about the size, length-wise, of my palm.  Upon first bite, I though…cinnamon? There was a bit of a cinnamon flavor, which accompanied the yummy coconut. It was very chewy, very soft, and dense. It was sweet, but did not have a sugary taste to it. There was a bit of an aftertaste, but not overpoweringly so. I LOVED how chewy it was, and how it had a good bite to it. And although I didn’t really taste much cashew flavor, it was predominantly coconut and that “cinnamon” I tasted, I think the cashew may have played a role in the softness and (very) slightly oily consistency. You can see when you touch the bar it’s not super dry and I think the bit of fat from the nuts may have something to do with that. This one gets 4.5 stars

Next up, The Cinnamon Roll flavor.

I was recommended by 2 people to try this one, so I had high expectations. And…they were most certainly met!  This bar was SO good! Upon first bite, I definitely tasted the cinnamon. It was sweet, but again, not sugary tasting. It was also very soft, chewy and dense, as well as it had a very fresh and moist feel to it. I could almost taste the “icing” in the bar on the “cinnamon roll”, and….in fact…it DID pretty much taste like a cinnamon roll! Dang!!  I will definitely be ordering more of these in the future, as I really enjoyed it. I was quite sad when it was over, because the flavor was phenomenal and the nutritional facts were awesome to back it up. It was a tad high in sodium (300 mg) , but nothing too outrageous. 5 stars

One thing I liked about these bars, is that although they had a good deal of fiber in them, it didn’t bother my stomach. Sometimes with products that have a LOT of fiber (more than 8 grams or so added) I notice my stomach will hurt, but these did not do anything, which I liked. I was very content and filled with the bar, and really enjoyed both of these flavors 🙂 More reviews to come!

PowerBar Fudge Brownie Protein Plus Bites

Author: Healthnuttxo

It’s a known fact that I love carbs. However, I’ve been upping my protein take as of lately, and on the lookout for yummy protein-filled finds.

Browsing the grocery store the other day, I found these little gems- PowerBar Fudge Brownie Protein Plus Bites. The whole bag I would consider the equivalent of a typical protein bar- 20 grams of protein and 300 calories for all 8 bites/balls. I almost didn’t buy it for one reason, the 25 grams of sugar per bag. However, I figured I could let it slide as I mostly buy/eat low sugar items and I would save these for a post-workout treat.

Each bite is in the shape of a small ball, with a crumb-like consistency covering the ball. The bites are dense and chewy, and really quite good. They are sweet and have a chocolate flavor, and the crumbs add a little bit of extra flavor. I can definitely taste the “protein” in it, as in it had a slight chocolate protein powder taste, but not too overwhelming.

I actually really enjoyed these! I think even if I don’t eat all of them in one sitting, I could pop one or two bites in my mouth after a workout before my drive home from the gym, and then eat a full meal once I arrive home. In fact, on the back of the bag it states “ever taken a few bites of a protein bar, and stowed the rest in your gym bag for later?” (SO ACCURATE for me! I usually eat bars in pieces =] )

I also like the fact that on the back of the bag it states that it is made with “TriSource” protein, which has a “sustained” “digestion rate” , which I definitely like!

Overall, I like these! I obviously wish they weren’t as high in sugar as they are, but I think they are a good post-workout protein-filled treat and quite delicious. Overall, 4 stars.

Another new flavor for me to try from Zone Perfect on their Perfectly Simple line. This time, Cranberry Almond, which I also received in the mail to try for free.

I looked at the stats before indulging in the snack. 170 calories, 10 grams of protein, 4 grams of fat, 19 grams os sugar ( a little high for me), gluten free, and made with 10 ingredients (bonus points here! Less ingredients something is made with in my book, the better!)

I opened up the bar and saw a light brown colored bar, with visible chunks of nuts and pieces. I took a bite, and was pleasantly surprised. It had a cranberry-pomegranate flavor, and also had apple flavored undertones. It was sweet without being overly sweet, but more of a fruit-kind-of-sweet.. It had that tang that cranberries and pomegranates have, but wasn’t so tangy that it was intolerable. The almonds added a tiny bit of a crunch, which was nice, and provided a mild flavor.

What I noticed about this bar, similar to the last Coconut flavored bar I tried, was it’s “piecy” consistency. The last bar I tried was Toasted Coconut, so I chalked up the “piecy-ness” to the flakes of coconut. However, as I chewed this bar, I noticed it was kind of piecy in consistency as well. After looking at the dry ingredients, I assume it’s from the sweetened cranberries and pieces of each individual ingredient.

Overall, a good bar! I liked the flavor, although it was a tad on the tangy side, and the bar was dense and had a nice chew to it. Not my favorite, but I would eat it again if the opportunity arose or if I saw it in the stores. 3 stars

Something new to try! I got a free box in the mail from Zone Perfect that had three new bars of theirs from the “Perfectly Simple” line. Inside was a Toasted Coconut flavor, Peanut Crunch and Cranberry Almond. All of the bars are gluten free, have some protein in them, and have minimal ingredients.

I decided to try the Toasted Coconut bar first. I opened the bar and it didn’t look as I expected. It was a rather dull color, with bits of what looked like nuts or coconut shreds and a rather dense bar. I broke off a piece, and realized it was a little dense.

After taking a bite, I actually enjoyed it. A good amount of sweetness, it has a yummy coconut flavor balanced with some almond flavor as well. What I didn’t really like was the consistency. Although I appreciate that there’s actual coconut in this bar, it had that flaky/shredded coconut consistency when you bit into the bar. With every bite I felt shreds of coconut between my teeth. Some people like that, I happen to not, but that’s just me.

However, the flavor made up for it. Loved the flavor, and the chewiness that the bar had to provide. I also like that it only has 8 ingredients, is gluten free, and has 10 grams of protein per bar. The bar’s first ingredient is also a form of sugar, which I didn’t like. It is also a tad high in calories, this one is 200, and while I feel I can get many other bars with way more protein, I enjoyed this bar minus the consistency.

Overall, 3.5  stars.
