Newman's Own Organic Champion Chip Cookies

I eat pretty healthfully, with balanced meals with protein, carbs, fiber and healthy fats. But after lunch (usually my post-workout meal), i like to have a little “reward” or something sweet to seal the deal and tide me over until snack time later. So with my grilled cheese sandwich and apple, i decided to give Newman’s Own Champion Chip cookies a try. I tried the chocolate chip flavor, but they also come in Espresso Chocolate Chip, Orange Chocolate Chip, Double CHocolate Mint Chip, Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and Wheat Free/Dairy Free Chocolate Chip. I hope to try the chocolate chocolate chip ones-those sound good!

I opened the bag and saw a whole bunch of bite-sized cookies. They smelled delicious-fresh and like a bakery. They have giant sized chocolate chips on them that literally melt in your mouth when you take a bite. The cookie part is crisp but also soft, and buttery tasting. It’s crumby and falls apart in your mouth. I could already tell- these cookies were going to be addicting! :)  They taste just like something you would get at your local bakery-but made a lot healthier with wholesome ingredients!

These cookies state that they are made with organic palm fruit oil, which according to Newman’s Own is
-”not hydrogenated,
-contains no trans-fatty acids,
- is lower in saturated fat than butter and has no cholesterol,
-is widely used in Europe as an alternative to partially hydrogenated oils,
-is extracted from the palm’s fruit not the palm’s kernel,
-can be grown organically in tropical regions,
-and is of the 3 tropical oils, Palm Fruit oil is 50% saturated while Palm Kernel Oil is 86% and COconut Oil is 92% saturated.”
Cool!

4 cookies is a serving size, and that is 160 calories, 7 grams of fat, 21 carbs, 1 gram of fiber and 2 grams of protein.

Organic Unbleached Flour, Organic Sugar, Organic Palm Oil, Organic Chocolate Chips (Organic Sugar, Organic Chocolate Liquor, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Corn Syrup Solids, Soy Lecithin (an emulsifier), Organic Vanilla Beans), Chocolate Chips (Sugar, Unsweetened Chocolate, Cocoa Butter, Dextrose, Soy Lecithin (an emulsifier), Vanilla), Liquid Egg Whites, Oats, Vanilla, Baking Soda, Salt.

Newman's Own Organic Soy Crisps

Author: healthnuttxo

soycrisps

So normally in the afternoon i have a yogurt (ahem, Stonyfield or Wallaby Organic. yum!) for a snack with something else that’s little, a handful of cereal, a cookie, etc. But today (after a grueling workout at the gym this morning) I was RAVENOUS! So i thought i needed something a bit more substantial than my normal yogurt.

So, i decided to give Newman’s Own Organic Soy Crisps a try. Okay now before you say EW, SOY IS GROSS, don’t even think about it. Soy crisps taste pretty much like rice cakes-but are healthier and have more satiety packed with them due to the soy protein and isolflavins that soy provides.

I have three of Newman’s flavors (which they so generously donated!), Cinnamon Sugar, White Cheddar and Barbeque. They also come in a lightly salted flavor.

Cinnamon Sugar-I opened up the bag and popped one in my mouth-delicious! They were sweet, crunchy, “cinnamonny” (if that’s a word!), in otherwords- SO GOOD! I got one soy crisp out the bowl i poured that had extra cinnamon and dehydrated cane juice on it… i was a happy camper ;)

Barbeque-tastes just like barbeque chips! My mom even asked for more after i let her try a few (which of course i declined her- get your own bag! ;) ) There is a subtle sweetness to the BBQ flavor, but you can  taste garlic and tomato flavors as well. These were good!

White Cheddar- just the right amount of seasoning. Not too heavy, not too light. They are cheesy too, and a tad salty. You will need some water with these!!

These soy crisps are definitely a lot healthier than other chips or pretzels that people grab for a snack in the afternoon. In 1 oz. (which is about a small bowlful- a good sized amount), there are 110-120 calories, 2.5-4 grams of fat, 13-15 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, and 7-9 grams of protein. Needless to say i was definitely satisfied after eating these-they quenched my hunger quite nicely. The Cinnamon Sugar Flavor also hit the spot for the fat/sugar laden craving i have been having for Auntie Anne’s Cinnamon Sugar Hot Pretzels lately in a much healthier way. I’m going to be buying these quite often!

Cinnamon Sugar-Organic Low Fat Soy Flour, Organic Rice Flour, Salt, Seasoning (dehydrated cane juice, cinnamon and not more than 2% silicon dioxide and vegetable oil added as a processing aid), Sunflower Oil.

Barbeque-Organic Low Fat Soy Flour, Organic Rice Flour, Salt, Seasoning (dehydrated cane juice, sea salt, onion powder, garlic powder, tomato powder, extractives of paprika, natural flavor, spices, citric acid with not more than 2% sunflower oil and silicon dioxide added), Sunflower Oil.

White Cheddar-Organic Low Fat Soy Flour, Organic Rice Flour, Salt, Seasoning (cheddar cheese [cultured milk, salt, enzymes], whey buttermilk, salt, disodium phosphate), Sunflower Oil.

well i love peanut butter. in fact, it’s my favorite food. so pair with chocolate? it MUST be heaven! i haven’t had a Reese’s in years. Artificial flavors+ trans fats= boo! So, seeing Newman’s Own Organic Peanut Butter Cups certainly caught my eye.

So, i opened up the package, and to my delight, there were not one, not two, but THREE of these little cups to enjoy! Perfect if you just want to fix a sweet tooth without blowing your diet, sharing with friends, or relishing and enjoying all three to yourself (you devil!) . My room was a little hot, so these cups were a little gooey when i opened it up (fine by me!) I took a bite and got a full mouth of chocolate. Yumm. Creamy. i bit around the edges of the peanut butter cup to get all the chocolate and make way to the best part- the peanut butter! THe peanut butter was smooth and the consistency was creamy, light and fluffy even. Would have been better if there was a tad bit more of a salty flavor, but it was still good.

Overall, i liked it.  My mom had one too (she doesn’t eat all organic like i do), and she thought they were yummy as well. It definitely was creamy, and the peanut butter wasn’t dry and pasty tasting like Reeses can sometimes be. You can certainly tell they are made with better ingredients. They taste “cleaner” if you will. They are not identical to Reeses, but they will hit the spot if you need some chocolate and peanut butter, but want to fix your craving in a healthier way. The cocoa used in Newman’s Own’s products is also rainforest alliance certified. I don’t know if that has any affect on you, but now you know! :)

3 cups are 190 calories (not tooo bad for candy), 12 grams fat, 17 grams carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and 3 grams of protein.

Organic Milk Chocolate (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Whole Milk Powder, Organic Chocolate Liquor, Organic Soy Lecithin [an emulsifier], Organic Vanilla), Creamy Peanut Butter, Organic Yogurt Coating (Organic Sugar [evaporated cane juice] Organic Palm Kernel Oil, Organic Nonfat Yogurt [Milk], Lactic Acid, Organic Soy Lecithin[an emulsifier], Salt and Organic Vanilla), Palm Kernel Oil, Peanut Flour, Salt.

Newman’s Own also comes in other varieties, Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups,  Dark Chocolate Mint Cups, Caramel Cups, and Dark Chocolate Caramel Cups. I will be reviewing those as soon as I can- leave a comment if you have tried any!
