Voke Tabs

Does anyone else here drink coffee every day?…

GUILTY!

What can I say, with a busy life, school, multiple jobs…I need my caffeine some days (okay, most days) to keep me going. I try not to go over a cup to 1-1/2 cups of coffee a day, but I definitely hit that mark.  Vote sent me some Voke Tabs, which is advertised to possibly replace that daily coffee!

Each tab is chewable, made from green tea caffeine (77 mg per tab), some guarana berry, acerola cherry, and has 100% Vitamin C and only 2 calories each! Here’s what they look like…
IMG_7415

I like that they are made from green tea caffeine! A lot of caffeinated products make me jittery, unless it is a natural caffeine source. So, I was hoping this would be the same.

How do they taste?

Honestly…pretty awful. It has a slight mixed berry flavor, but is overwhelmed with a tart and metallic taste to it. I do not like it at all. I had one, and haven’t had one since. The other one I let my brother try, who also agreed the flavor was not good.

The convenience is a plus if you can get over the flavor. But the top of the can also comes off easily so you cannot just throw this in your bag as it will open up on you.

Energy wise? It was OK. I did not get jittery, I didn’t really feel as awake as a cup of coffee would, but just did not feel tired (I took this during my “afternoon slump” around 3-4pm). I had no problem sleeping that night as well.

Overall, I don’t like them. I can’t get over the taste. The energy is lackluster. Maybe 2 of them would do the trick for me personally but I won’t be eating two of them.

Alrighty! So, I do not drink a ton of protein powder- not my style, I am much more of a food eater, but it definitely has a place in my diet. I tend to stick to low carb whey proteins, and use them when I need calories post workout and do not feel hungry or for convenience in the morning.

I received Growing Naturals Organic Rice Protein in Strawberry Burst to try. I have never had rice protein before. This one in particular is:

Organic
Vegan
Allergy friendly
Made with brown rice protein (raw),
Has 3 grams of carbs (1 sugar), 24 grams of protein
&& is NON GMO certified

There is a complete panel of the Amino Acid profile of the rice protein on the BPA free plastic, which is definitely a plus (see below). There is even an explanation of what an essential amino acid is, which essentially (hehe) are a few of the 20 or so amino acids that your body cannot produce on it’s own and you NEED to eat.

SO, I opened the tub and saw brown powder. I was a little shocked and expected to see pink…since strawberry…but I have to remember this is BROWN rice protein, and there are no added artificial colors. It smells like a mixture of strawberries and well…protein powder. It’s hard to describe what protein powder smells like since it is so unique, but for anyone who has ever tried it, knows it has an odor.

It’s kind of hard to mix…I added it to milk and tried mixing for a few minutes. The powder just did not seem to want to assimilate. I would suggest doing it with a shaker cup or blender.

IMG_4218

I took a sip and….

IMG_4219

meh.

I do not like it. I added half a scoop to roughly 4-5 ounces of 2% milk. The strawberry flavor is muted by the overpowering stevia flavor. The stevia is really bitter and tastes like the extract, and is very strong. This stevia and strawberry flavor put together makes the strawberry flavor taste like a fake flavor, not like natural, fresh picked strawberries but more like a stevia sweetened strawberry flavored milk you’d purchase at a store.

There is a residue left on your tongue, powdery and piece-y. I kind of expected that, since a lot of rice products I’ve had before in the past always had off consistencies. There is an aftertaste as well, but I still would think this is from the stevia.

Overall….huge let down. I was excited by this protein, looking at the label and reading about it. I had another person try this with peanut butter and milk in a blended shake and he wasn’t a huge fan of it, and agreed there was an aftertaste. Perhaps if you mixed it with a banana and used a lot of ice to dilute the flavor, it is doable.

It’s a pass from me. 1  1/2 stars

Hello!

So the nice people over at Enzymedica sent me two of their supplements to try out for free, Digest Gold with ATPro, and Acid Soothe. I was excited to try these, and I have a very sensitive stomach, and could use any extra help I can get!

The Digest Gold is vegan and kosher, and helps with digestion by providing a slew of enzymes. It is priced at roughly $29.99. Here is a list of everything inside!

IMG_0591

So anything ending in “-ase” is an enzyme. So you can see, there are a LOT of enzymes in this bottle.  Amylase is an enzyme that breaks down sugars, Protease helps break down proteins, Lactase helps break down milk based/lactose products, etc.  Here is what the pill looked like. It was relatively small and easy to swallow, which is a plus for me. I hate taking huge pills! I will purposely stop buying a brand if the pills are too big.

IMG_0628So how did it work? I decided to take it in the mornings, because I usually feel nauseous after breakfast (disclaimer: I am not pregnant! Just sensitive tummy!). I usually have toast with butter and some coffee for breakfast, and then go to the gym shortly after. At the gym, even 2 hours later, I sometimes feel nauseous or still “full” from my food. The first day I took the Digest Gold I noticed substantially less nausea, and felt pretty good! I was pleased and my stomach felt less heavy than usual.

I tried it again at dinner time. I always get indigestion from sauce/onions, so I had it with a meatball dish with sauce. Again, no heartburn after or indigestion, which was great.

I have been taking the remainder of the bottle with breakfast every day, and although there were a few days I was still nauseous, I would say this product definitely helped me. I would consider buying it again for sure, even though it is a little pricy. 4 stars

Moving on!

IMG_0943

The Acid Soothe. This product was priced at (I believe) around  7-8 dollars, which is average for traditional forms of acid relief such as Pepcid for a 30 count box. This product is vegan and filled with vegan enzymes and herbs to help heartburn. Here is the list:

IMG_0944

I found the perfect opportunity to take this the other day, when I had a little too much coffee. I had mild heart burn and it was otherwise just giving me a little bit of a stomachache. I took the Acid Soothe and waited about an hour. I must say it was a little bit disappointing. It alleviated the heart burn by very little,  but did help relieve some gas (in the form of some burps) but the heartburn was still relatively painful. I had high hopes for the Acid Soothe seeing as the Digest Gold was so great,  but this one I deem as generally ineffective, as least for me. 1 1/2 stars

Chobani Concord Grape Blended Yogurt

Author: Healthnuttxo

IMG_0408

Grape Chobani! I finally saw this flavor pop up at my local Target (ahh…don’t you just love Target?) and had to buy them. I had a free coupon from Chobani…but of course I left it at home -_-, so I ended up paying for this one.  I would use that free coupon to buy and review again but…

I will not be buying this flavor again. Chobani, you are my favorite brand of Greek yogurt, but the new flavors have been real flops! I hated the Green Tea flavored yogurt( which I reviewed here) and this one was a let down as well. Here’s what it looked like.

IMG_0409It was a creamy, blended yogurt, so no fruit on the bottom. It was just not sweet enough, or grape flavored enough, or…enough enough. It tasted more like plain yogurt than grape, since the grape flavor was so muted. What little grape flavor there was tasted awfully fake, like a grape flavored candy or something. It had an awkward after taste as well that I could not get over. It was like a few drops of fake grape juice poured into plain yogurt.

Blech.

Will not buy again. Will not use free coupon on. Will not feed to dog. It was slightly better after I added an Equal packet, but not good enough. I’ll stick to pineapple and mango flavors of Chobs, both of which are delicious. 1 1/2 stars

Another soup review! NOT to be confused with my last review of this delicious soup, but I decided to buy this Wolfgang Puck Chicken and Dumplings soup in hopes it would be similar to this one!

So, the other day I came home from the gym and was HUNGRY. You know- when your hungry and pretty much you’d eat anything, and what you do eat, usually tastes so good. Even spinach would taste good. OK…that may be exaggerating, given the fact I hate spinach (I know….shame on health nut!), but you know what I’m talking about  ; )

SO ANYWAY, I decided to try out this new soup as part of my lunch. Here’s what it looked like transferred to a bowl…

THIS is supposed to fill me up....?

Here’s the soup, I tried to find some of the actual
contents of the soup (there was not a lot..it was mostly broth)

The “square” could have been a dumpling or a potato piece. They both looked the same.

So, as you can see…mostly broth, a few carrots, a few potato pieces, a few square dumplings(weird) and a few pieces of chicken. This was not a filling soup. You can guarantee it I had something else to eat after this soup. I considered it my appetizer.

Starting with the broth, it was sort of thin but also had a bit of an oily consistency I didn’t like.  The chicken was horrible. It was soooooo chewy, like the bottom stalk of an asparagus. Chew. Chew. Chew. The carrots and the potatoes were mushy. Like the second I put it in my mouth it turned to mush. Not my kinda vegetable consistency. And, the dumplings were basically bland noodles. I thought they were potatoes at first. Then I realized they were dumplings. ???

Overall, waste of money. I also felt like it was underseasoned and needed some salt. I was really disappointed with this soup. 1 1/2 stars   *SIGH* : (

Amy’s Kitchen Thai Coconut Soup

Author: Healthnuttxo

It’s a sad day for me in Amy’s Kitchen world.

First off, you guys should (hopefully!!) know by now how much of a fan I am of Amy’s meals. I love a lot of the entrees, and never had a problem with any of them in the past. In fact, I continue to eat Amy’s Kitchen meals (despite the hefty 5-6$ price each!) on a daily basis.

So, to try something new, I picked up the Amy’s Kitchen Thai Coconut Soup. If it was anything like the Thai Stir Fry Meal (one of my FAVORITES!) I was sure I was going to like it. So I opened the can and poured it into a pot. I was really taken aback. Why was this so thin? I thought. From the front of the can, I was sure it was going to be thick and creamy. Instead, it was almost like a thin broth, with a few vegetables scattered. Here’s what it looked like after it was done cooking.

Wait…RED-ORANGE? Why wasn’t it white like the can?

Whatever, I thought, pictures on the front never really look like how the product actually looks like anyway.

So I took a spoonful, excited to try. I was hoping for a creamy and rich tasting soup with coconut flavor. However….it really wasn’t like that at all. Like I said, there were very few veggies. In fact, here’s the size of the pot I used

And here’s the amount of veggies in the soup after I poured out the broth.

Yea….

So not much veggie action going on there. Or, veggie and tofu action. But, even with the vegetables that were there, I was diasppointed. The carrots were very mushy, green beans kind of the same, the tofu was alright but bland, and the random leaves- I think they were bay leafs?, I threw (ahem, recycled) the can before I wrote this up so I forgot to check the ingredients. Regardless, I wasn’t a fan of the veggies : (

I wasn’t really a fan of the flavor of this soup either. Like I said it was very thin, with almost a tomatoey flavor. There also was an awkward spice to it, that reminded me of cayenne pepper. I didn’t get to finish this soup, so I heated up a delicious meal I knew I would love – Amy’s Enchiladas in the microwave. Good thing for back up! =)

Overall, 1 1/2 stars. I really didn’t enjoy this, but if you tried this, I’d LOVE to know your thoughts!

Question- what’s your favorite thing involving coconut? Mine is definitely Amy’s Kitchen Thai Stir Fry, which I’m pretty sure is made with coconut milk!! =)

Source

I FINALLY went to Whole Foods yesterday, and got a bunch of awesome stuff! The person I went with only bought a few things (I’d say the ratio of my things to her things was like 50:1) , but she got some of the Terra Crinkles Sweet Potato Chips in the Candied Sweets variety. Driving home, I couldn’t wait to try them, since I’m a huge fan of sweet potatoes, and they sounded so yummy!

So I opened the bag, which was a big fail, since it completely ripped down the middle and was not picture-taking worthy after (oops!). I argued it wasn’t my fault the bag ripped so funny, I just opened it according to the little tear on top of the bag. I suppose it was my fault there was an enormous rip down the front of the bag, but oh well. At least the insides were safe. Which, speaking of, here’s what they looked like inside the bag

And here’s a pic of just one chip

Yeeeep. That picture was taken in the car (no worries, I wasnt the driver!).
I may have eaten these on the way home from Whole Foods…. I told you I couldn’t wait! (:

I tried one, and first noticed how hard and crunchy they were. As for the flavor, I must say, very lackluster. The first thing both the person I was with and I thought of was Thanksgiving mashed sweet potatoes. But, to be perfectly honest, these chips were not as good. They had a very strong sweet potato flavor, but  it almost tasted burnt. There was a light dusting of cinnamon flavor, and just the tiniest hint of salt and the tiniest hint of sweetness. I tried a couple more, and I wasn’t really a fan, nor was the person I was with.

Overall, 1 1/2 stars. I was really disappointed with these- I really wanted to like them! I feel as if they need to be sweeter and/or more cinnamon-y in flavor, or even more salty. They were rather bland and I really didn’t enjoy them. They are also high in fat, but I do like that they have some fiber, are low in sugar, and have 50% vitamin A needs per serving.

What’s your favorite way to eat a sweet potato? I must say, sweet potato fries always win me over =)

I managed to not rip the part of the bag with the nutrition label on it. Woo!

Yoplait Honey Vanilla Greek Yogurt

Author: Healthnuttxo

It’s apparent of my love of yogurt, greek or regular, so there was no way I would turn down some free coupons to get some greek yogurt by Yoplait! Of the ones  I picked out, Honey Vanilla Greek Yogurt was one of them.

A few things to point out before I start, I noticed that this one had 40% Calcium needs (nice!!), and, like the container stated, it is “Gluten Free”.

I put this yogurt in the freezer for 20 minutes or so to get it super cold, and then took it out to enjoy. I noticed it was very thick and to me, resembled regular vanilla yogurt, except a bit thicker. At first bite, unfortunately, I really was not pleased. It had a very funky taste to it, and then there was a bitter/sour aftertaste, like a honey-flavored “zing”. It was very unexpected, and I didn’t taste that sourness until after I ate a spoonful of yogurt. I also detected a very weak vanilla flavor.

Overall, I can’t say I was a fan of this particular flavor. Perhaps I will enjoy the other flavors more. I did like that it had a good amount of calcium in it, but I wasn’t in favor or the flavor. 1 1/2 stars

1 container is 150 calories, 0 grams of fat, 22 grams of carbohydrates, 18 grams of sugar and 14 grams of protein.

What’s your favorite flavor of any yogurt?
