Snow Monkey Superfood Ice Treat

Author: Healthnuttxo
With low calorie/ light Frozen treats “ice cream” with a bit of protein being a current hit with not only my fellow fitness peeps, but everyone seems to like them, you see tons of new brands popping up with new varieties to try. I’ve tried a couple. Some are well worth the 6$ a pint and others you
may as well throw your 6$ in the trash …along with the pint. 🙂
 .
In comes a new brand I haven’t heard or saw just yet in the freezer section— Snow Monkey. Of the two varieties I was sent, Goji Berry and Cacao, both are dairy free, gluten free, non GMO, vegan, paleo and have 20 grams of protein per pint at 99 cals a serving.
 .
The Goji Berry says I️t has potassium in I️t, however there’s only 140 mg a serving aka 4% of your daily needs to make sure you always read the fine print 🙂 —although I guess that’s what I’m here for!
 .
Let’s get to the breakdown before the taste.
Goji berry has 99 cals a serving, 2 grams of fat, 17 carbs, 2 g of fiber, 14 grams of sugar—but 0g added sugar— and 5 grams of protein.
 .
Cacao has 99 cals a serving, 3 grams of fat, 16 carbs, 3 g of fiber, 12 grams of sugar—but 4g added sugar— and 5 grams of protein.
 .
Where is this sugar coming from….
BANANAS! Bananas are the first ingredient for both varieties, followed by juice concentrates. I️ definitely like the fact of using fruit as a sweetener and a base—help me add a little extra fruit to my diet in an indulgent way. Hemp protein is main source of protein.
 .
Now for these you have to let them sit for a solid 15-20 minutes before you can even get a scoop out of the container. For real. But remember the base is fruit and not dairy so that’s why.
I cheated and used the “soften” feature in my microwave. Because I am a hungry girl and I am impatient. That’s why.
 .
NOW THE TASTE!
Cacao- is amazing. Literally. Tastes like a chocolate covered banana. Once defrosted, it is smooth and creamy and everything you could want for a frozen dessert, including the fact it has fiber, protein, and the base is a banana. It it sweet but not overpoweringly so. Like this is the type of “dessert” you eat and don’t feel like crap about after, because hey, it’s actually NOT bad for you! I could also barely taste any protein flavor, so that’s always a plus for me. 4.5 stars
 .
Goji Berry- however, this one I was not a fan of. It is just…odd. It has a banana- raspberry-ish flavor, and you can definitely taste the hemp protein, and detect the consistency of the protein powder. I would pass on this one and go straight for the Cacao. 2 stars
 .
Overall, I am a fan. I would like to see what other flavors they come out with. Love how versatile they are, and how they appeal to those who cannot eat dairy!

Thunderbird Real Food Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

WELL sorry it’s been a while guys…life got a little hectic the past month but I’m back, never fear 8)

Coming at you with some Real Food Bars by Thunderbird. They sent me 4 varieties to try, all vegan, no added sugar, and grain/gluten free. They are nut, seed and date based. As an added benefit, they are also paleo certified. (NOTE: This applies to the bars I got from the company, if you check the website they have several flavors to pick from and details may vary!)

So let’s get started:

As I said above, all of them more or less have the same texture, nutty/seedy with a fruity, date base. The date flavor was there in all 4 bars.

Hazelnut + Coffee + Maca

Coming from a coffee lover, this was not my favorite. It was…gritty. Like I would take a bite of the bar and then grit.  WHAT IS THAT?!?! I checked the ingredients, and it seems it could have been the coffee beans or chia seeds, not entirely sure, but not entirely a fan. The coffee flavor was definitely strong, but overpowered the hazelnut component because I did not taste that too much. The date was sweet and strong as well…If I had to rename this bar it would be like “A Date with Coffee”…because it really just tasted like dates and coffee.

2 stars.

Cashew + Fig + Carrot

Alrighty, moving on. This one was okay. As a whole, it was entirely too sweet without much of another component to balance it out– needed more crunch, or something even slightly salty, etc. The Fig + Carrot together gave it a sweet potato vibe. & like I said, this one was lacking on the crunch factor, a cashew is a pretty soft nut to begin with so it was kind of lost in this bar. Overall, too sweet, too fruity, needs something else. Maybe almond would have been a better choice.

2.5 stars

Peach Pecan Vanilla

In this bar, the peach and date flavor really shine through. The vanilla flavor is somewhat lost. It’s a sweet bar, but not overly sweet, and almost gives off an apricot type of flavor. Chewy, dense and nutty, and the pecans add a nice crunch. I almost taste a bit of cashew in this one. Overall, this one was pretty good, I’m a fan.

3.5 stars

Texas Maple Pecan

Well, well, well, moving on to the star. This one was kind of like pecan pie 🙂 Chewy and dense, sweet but not overly so, huge chunks of pecan and a nice cinnamon flavor. It goes well with the date because it reminds me of the condensed milk, etc. they use to make pecan pie. The maple flavor is subtle,  but delicious. There is some type of “zing” to the bar, and I can’t quite figure out what it is–perhaps the cinnamon– but I like it. Basically if you’re like me and will eat the topping of a pecan pie, you’ll like this bar.

4 stars.

OVERALL, I like the idea of these bars. Gluten free, paleo, minimal ingredients, no added sugar. I think some need a tad bit of tweaking, BUT you have to also consider the minimal ingredient component. I would definitely try the Pecan based flavors, and I would be interested in trying the other flavors (like ummm they have this cool Pecan Goji Pistachio flavor!!) Thunderbird has to offer.

Check them out!

Just Granola Products

Author: Healthnuttxo

Hi there!

Today we are reviewing one of my favorite things… granola. In yogurt, out of the box, in bar form, UGH LOVE IT. I could eat it all day. I won’t…because it’s usually loaded with sugar…but here’s hopes to Just Granola filling the void for granola, that is both healthy and nutritious.

Note: If after this review you decide you want to try some, you can head over to the website and first time customers get 20% off with code “launch20”.

So a little backstory, Just Granola offers a variety of products, bars and actual granola, and some of the products are made without animal products, gluten or nuts. This appeals to a wide variety of people, whether you have to go gluten free or you are vegan. (note: some of their products DO contain nuts/animal products. AND- These products ARE made in a facility that processes gluten, nuts and animal products. ALWAYS Read the label!)

First up, the Peanut Butter Granola bar. BOY WAS I PUMPED FOR THIS.
Healthnuttxo fans will know…by now…hopefully…that I am a nut butter addict. So now combine my favorite food (spread? I mean it’s technically peanuts…) with granola?!?! Let’s get to it.

NOTE: THIS BAR CONTAINS PEANUTS, WHEAT/GLUTEN.
It was a Chewy and dense bar, little bit of cinnamon flavor to it. Did not taste much peanut butter to it to be honest, which is sort of disappointing for a peanut butter granola bar. It tasted more “oat-y” and “cinnamon-y” than “peanut butter-y”. I just made those words up so…follow along! 🙂 It wasn’t *bad*, it just wasn’t exactly my favorite. A bit on the bland side, and really not enough of a peanut butter punch that I need in order to be satisfied with a peanut butter product. 2 1/2 stars.

1 bar is 3 servings (which is SUPER easy to eat when it looks like a cookie!) at 130 calories, 6 grams of fat, 16 carbs, 2 grams fiber, 6 sugars and 4 grams of protein.

Next up, the Oat & Raisin Granola Bar.

Got this pic from their website ^
This one is made without nuts, gluten or animal products ( but is made in a facility that uses these ingredients so be careful!)
I liked this one better than the peanut butter bar. It was chewy, and again, had a nice cinnamon flavor. It wasn’t too sweet,  but with the raisins gave off an oatmeal raisin cookie type of feel. It was soft, but had like a very “toasted” almost slightly “burnt” flavor to it that was predominant. However, not bad. 3 stars.

Lastly, the oh so delicious, Apple & Cranberry Granola.  I had just a tiny bit of this after having my wisdom teeth taken out and LET ME TELL YOU, it was such a tease, because after an extraction you are not supposed to have any foods that may “get stuck” so I had to patiently wait until I was fully healed to enjoy the rest of the bag! The cinnamon flavor (again) is strong but really works here. It was a sweet and “soft” granola, as in, not crispy./crunchy which I guess is due to not using tons of oil.
It had a nice honey flavor as well, and sweetness was provided from bits of dried apple and cranberry.
I also detected a nice, light brown sugar flavor.
It was really quite nice straight from the bag. I actually didn’t eat it any other way. I demolished this straight from the bag 🙂
4.5 stars

One serving is 100 calories, 3.5 g fat, 15 carbs, 7g sugar and 3 grams of protein.

Overall,
I think the products are worth a try. I am a granola fan, and I like the idea behind these products. I also liked that they weren’t overloaded with fat or added sugars. Always a plus in a my book!

Note: I received these products for free from the company. This is an UNBIASED review.

Hello!

I got a box of goodies from the fantabulous (yes thats a word) Vitamin Shoppe! I was sent an assortment of protein powders, a shaker cup, a shirt, protein bar, protein chocolate, and a protein cookie! Perfect gift box for the avid weight lifter like myself. So let’s get started!

First up, let’s get to the protein powders.

Bodytech Whey Tech, Micellar Casein, Hexatein, and PRO PUDDING samples. Note: all proteins (except pudding) were mixed with unsweetened almond milk.

Bodytech Whey Tech is a quick absorbed protein and good for post workout. I got these in Strawberry  and Chocolate Mint. They both mixed relatively easy.

The Strawberry flavor was not a favorite of mine. It tasted and smelled overly fake, and had a funky strawberry flavor. Reminded me of a muted strawberry milk, but the artificial sweetener was too prominent to enjoy. 2 stars.

The Chocolate Mint flavor was…eh. It tasted like spearmint, with very mild chocolate undertones. It was very, very mildly sweet so the flavors were sort of muted. Not a fan. 2 stars.

Moving on…

Hexatein. I heard good things about these!

IMG_1249 These proteins are a blend of whey, casein, and egg protein for assorted absorption and digestion rates. I got these in Chocolate and Vanilla. Both flavors were on the harder side to mix without getting clumps.

The Chocolate flavor tasted like cocoa powder moreso than chocolate, but did remind me of a chocolate milk. It had a creamy taste and mild sweetness, but it was a bit chalky. Not too bad. 3 1/2 stars.

The Vanilla flavor reminded me of a frosting, but was not nearly as sweet (obviously). It was creamy, and had an okay vanilla flavor, however the fake sweetener aftertaste was a tad too noticeable for me. 3 stars.

Next…

The Casein protein. Casein is a slow digested protein, and typically consumed before bed. I got this variety in Cookies and Cream, which happens to be my favorite protein flavor usually. It was thick, mixed easily, creamy. I kind of liked it because it had a mild cookie flavor, with mini pieces, but not too sweet. I don’t like overly sweet powders, they make it hard for me to drink. My favorite of all the proteins. 4 stars.

Next up, The PRO PUDDING!

IMG_1252

IMG_1254 These were mixed with 5 ounces of cold water. You have to let them sit a bit for them to set up and thicken. To be honest, I did not like either one of them. The vanilla reminded me of a sugar free vanilla jello (that you make from the box), but the flavor was lack luster, too artificial tasting, awkwardly sweet, and too much to consume with one muted flavor. The chocolate was a little better, not too sweet, chalky, and tasted more like cocoa powder. Both were OK but need mix ins. I can see how they can be useful during dieting with some mix ins, perhaps a crunchy component, or some banana slices, but I was not a fan. 2 stars.

Next up, the Complete Cookie by Lenny and Larry’s in Birthday Cake flavor. Oh MAN was this good! A HUGE cookie ( be careful…two servings!!!) It was sweet, but not overly sweet, had NO protein flavor, was soft baked but dense, had a somewhat brown sugar flavor…very good, just not super healthy. 370 calories and 30 grams of sugar for one cookie, but if you need protein and you are craving sweets, this is totally the way to go.  4 1/2 stars

IMG_1255

Next, the PowerCrunch Dark Chocolate bar. This had two servings in it,surprisingly. and overall was OK but not worth the calories. If I am craving chocolate, I was CHOCOLATE! It had a semi sweet but more on bitter side flavor with little krispies in it, kind of like a Crunch bar, but not as sweet. The chocolate was not smooth in consistency, and it was OK. 3 stars

Lastly, and a product I actually purchased again for both awesome nutritional stats and flavor, the Oh Yeah! ONE protein bar in Birthday Cake flavor. Only 1 gram of sugar with 21 grams of protein, and freaking awesome flavor. Dense, chewy, sweet, tastes like a sugar cookie meets vanilla cake. I love it, and the sprinkles on top make it feel decadent. This is my new favorite protein bar! 4 1/2 stars.

IMG_1256

Overall, got some good stuff! The shirt and shaker bottle from Vitamin Shoppe added a nice touch. The shirt was super comfy, and fit well. The shaker cup was sturdy, and had a jack-like shaped object instead of those annoying metal wire balls that you cannot get untangled if you store them together or throw them in dishwasher, which helped mix protein. Thank you, Vitamin Shoppe, for my care package!IMG_1248

Modern Oats All Natural Oatmeal

Author: Healthnuttxo

Mmmm oatmeal!!! Who doesn’t love a nice bowl of oats? Even though “winter” by me is unseasonably warm, I still could go for a nice bowl of oatmeal any day!

Modern Oats sent me some samples to try for free of their on the go, individually portioned and flavored oatmeals.  I got 6 flavors- 5 Berry, Nuts and Seeds, Apple Walnut, Goji Blueberry, Chocolate Cherry and Mango Blackberry. All of these sounded exquisite!!

All flavors are Gluten and GMO free, Vegan, and bursting with whole grain goodness.

I was most excited about the Apple Walnut, so I decided to try that first. IMG_7261IMG_7262

Here is a pic of it before I added the boiling water:IMG_7263

And here is a picture of the oatmeal after I left the cover sit on it for 2-3 minutes as directed:IMG_7264

How did it taste? Honestly, for 17 grams of sugar, the sweetness was lacking. It was very lightly sweetened, mostly from the baby apples. The brown sugar seemed to stay at the bottom even though I mixed it. It was chewy, and I think it needed a bit more water than recommended. Once stirred, more brown sugar came to the surface, as well as raisins, which provided some sweetness, and some pumpkin and sunflower seeds. There was a mild walnut flavor, but needed more. However, I did like it. 3 1/2 stars

Next up, Mango Blackberry.

IMG_7309

This one I added more water to, and I think it worked well, as it was creamier. However, this one was kind of bland. It tasted like lightly sweetened plain oatmeal. The mango flavor was lacking, and the mango that was in there was not sweet. There was only one blackberry in the whole cup. The sweetness was very mild, and flavor was lacking. 2 1/2 starsIMG_7310

Next up, Chocolate Cherry.IMG_7480

This one I added a WEE bit too much water too. However, I did not like this one regardless. It just did not taste good. The chocolate flavor didn’t seem to fit, was too bitter, and needed sweetness. There was a few cherries, which were good, but too little. There was some nuts which were good, but the chocolate overall ruined the cup. 2 stars.IMG_7481

Next up, 5 Berry. Unfortunately, I lost the pictures of the last 3, but nutritional information and appearance was generally the same.

This one had a light sweetness, and some crunch from sunflower seeds and nuts. There was a mild tart flavor from the berry, which had cranberry, strawberry and raspberry flavor. I liked this one! 3 1/2.

NEXT up… Nuts and Seeds. This one I predicted to like the least but was pleasantly surprised. There was a great texture from all the crunchy nuts and seeds and soft cooked oats. There was a slight taste of cinnamon, and again, it was slightly sweetened. I really enjoyed the pumpkin and sunflower seeds, and liked how they stayed crunchy. 4 star

Lastly, Goji Blueberry. Again, lightly sweetened (seems to be a theme here), with a tiny crunch from sunflower seeds. I did not taste the blueberry really, and it was majorly lacking. There was a small berry in the oatmeal every now and then, but without flavor. The goji also did not provide much flavor. I think this would have been better sweeter. 3 stars

Overall, the oatmeals were good, but needed improvement. The flavors are there, but lack something to bring out the sweetness. Perhaps some spices or salt would help the sweet flavors come out to play. They are good if you are used to a “natural” palate, but you will be a tad disappointed if you are used to the generic super sweetened oatmeal. However, they were all easy to prepare, and a good portion to stay satisfied.

I received this product to try for free from the company. This is an unbiased review.

Introducing…Vitamin Shoppe’s Protein Pantry!

IMG_6725 A new section at Vitamin Shoppe filled with yummy protein packed foods! My favorite. Aside from the traditional protein bars, I like eating protein enriched foods, since I have such an active lifestyle. Gotta fuel those muscles!

They sent me MET-RX Protein Pancake Mix, P28 Apple Crisp Spread, and D’s Naturals Fluff Butter in Chocolate Fudge Cake Batter and Vanilla Maple.

First up…the pancakes!

IMG_7641

You can do 2-3 scoops with up to 1/3-1/2 cup of water, mix, and cook. I decided to use milk and cook with some pam and light butter because I like my pancakes crispy.
IMG_7644

Mmmmm….
IMG_7645
The finished product!
IMG_7648

These were super yummy! They got crispy on the outside from the butter, but remained fluffy and moist on the inside. There was a delicious vanilla aroma being pervaded throughout the house when I was cooking them. They mixed easily, and cooked within a few minutes. The flavor was mildly sweet, mild buttermilk flavor, and even a touch of what felt like a vanilla protein flavor.

I liked them! I think they are versatile and welcome your own additions, but are great with butter and some sugar free syrup alone. You can view the nutritional facts below. I’m a little bummed sugar is the second ingredient added, and wheat flour is used over whole wheat. The protein count to carb and sugar ratio is a little low for me, so these will be used more as a pre-workout meal versus a post workout. With that being said, 4 stars. Great for people trying to put on some mass as well, as they are easy to eat and have some good quality calories.

IMG_7642

Next up, The P28 Apple Crisp Spread

Here’s the spread on some toast:
IMG_6754

As you can see, it was pretty creamy in texture. At least…the top part was. The bottom half got a little drier, more “cement” like, kind of when you extract the natural oil out of non hydrogenated oil. It needs the fat! So if you do buy this, make sure you stir it! The bottom also had tiny bits of raisins and granola crunches that you miss out on until you hit the bottom of the jar. The flavor otherwise is okay, it’s a little pasty, not too sweet, not salty, and pretty mild. I really liked it on toast after I added some jelly, which brought out the flavors of the Apple Crisp spread so much. The apple undertones really came out, and I could taste the cinnamon as well. Overall, good, but not a favorite eaten alone, especially when you hit the bottom. The nutritional profile is actually pretty awesome too- high in fat, obviously, but sugar is low and protein is high. Carbohydrates aren’t much higher than a normal serving of peanuts either. 4 stars

2 tablespoons is 200 calories, 16 grams of fat, 3 saturated fat, 10 mg of sodium, 8 grams of carbohydrate, 2 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugar, and 14 grams of protein.

 Lastly, D’s Naturals Fluff Butter

First up, the Vanilla Maple

IMG_7469

As you can see, on toast, it kind of “disintegrated” when it was warm.

So next round, I waited until it cooled off a bit, and added some Jelly.

IMG_7470

Alone, not a huge fan of this flavor. It’s a little pasty, and tastes like almond extract with a maple flavor. It’s thick, but not super creamy, and has this odd texture which I think is from the pea protein. If you have ever had pea protein, you know what I am talking about. It’s not creamy…it has this “powdery” texture even when blended with a liquid. I can’t have a spoon of this all at once…too powerful of flavor.

On toast with Jelly, much better. Even though a lot of the flavor seems to disappear into the toast, and I just seemed to taste it mildly. Overall, not a huge fan. I would pass on this one. 2 1/2 stars

Below is some nutritional facts:IMG_7471

Lastly, the Chocolate Fudge Cake Batter Almond Fluffbutter.

This one was pretty good. I liked it better than the Vanilla Maple. It was sweet, but not sugary. It was a little pasty, and you could taste the pea protein. It definitely has a fudge flavor, and reminds me a little bit like chocolate frosting, but not as sugary. Like a protein chocolate frosting. It is creamy, and you can taste the almond which is nice. The flavors are mild, but good. I enjoyed this one straight up- which is vital for me to really enjoy a spread or nut butter. 4 stars

I got some yummy Perky Fruit Bodies to try! What is that, you say? These are organic, raw, vegan, gluten free, and kosher “fruit leathers”.

Let’s get to it! ^-^

IMG_7575

Coconut Banana– this one is squished!

IMG_7576The color and appearance isn’t appetizing, but we always go beyond that for food reviews! The flavor is OK. Banana and coconut flavor is strong, the banana provides the natural sweetness, and tastes like an over-ripened banana. It is dry, and a bit flaky. It is not “sticky” like you would picture a “fruit roll up”, and is more like a natural fruit leather, but still on the drier side. It’s alright. 2 1/2 stars

Strawberry Banana– this one is good!

IMG_7578Tangy from the strawberries, and sweet from the banana. Tastes like a strawberry banana smoothie in fruit leather form. It is a bit chewier than the Coconut Banana, and more held together, which I like. It has a bit of a “rip” to it when you bite it. I would eat this one again. 4 star

Cacao Banana Coconut-  this one I also like.

IMG_7577The cacao flavor is pretty strong, but it gives a chocolate covered banana flavor to it. Good amount of sweetness. The Cacao gives almost a dark chocolate feel as well. The coconut flavor is very mild, and lacking, but I don’t mind because I think it tastes good the way it is. Chewy and has a nice “rip” to it…I like this one! 4 star

Overall, not bad! They run 60-130 calories each, ranging from 14-18 carbs and 0-7 grams of fat depending on the flavor. I think they would go great as a pre workout snack, as you are getting a boost of energy from the sugars from the fruits, and they are light enough where they will not make you feel sluggish during a workout. I also like how they are individually wrapped and easy to bring with you on the go. You can view nutritional information below.

Culturelle Advanced Immune Defense

Author: Healthnuttxo

IMG_6113

Well, this product couldn’t have come at a more perfect timing. Everyone knows the scenario…Fall comes around and all of a sudden, everyone is SICK!! Like out of no where, germs fly all over the place and suddenly everyone around you either has a cold, Strep or the big one…the FLU!!!

I was offered to try this product by Culturelle, a supplement for immunity support. It contains a probiotic, Vitamin C, Zinc, and antioxidants.  We are advised to take one per day, for adults and children 12 years and up. This product is free of gluten, dairy, lactose, wheat, soy and preservatives.

I have taken probiotics before and took them before trying this 10 day trial. When starting any new product there may be some bloating or side effects.

These pills are harder than I imagined, most of my other probiotics were in softer, more flexible capsules. They aren’t too large, and they are easy to swallow. I was just getting over a cold when I started taking these. I noticed no change in recovery time, but this is immune DEFENSE so I didn’t expect it to help an already existing cold.

I was a little bloated and gassy on this supplement. I had some mild nausea. I do not think the nausea was from the pill. I have nausea daily and I need a strong probiotic to keep in under control. The probiotic part of this pill was not strong enough for me, and the bloating was consistent throughout the 10 days.

At the end of my 10 day trial, I contracted another cold. I work at a gym, I workout at a gym, and I go to class in public places with sick people. This is not expected to be a miracle pill. but I found it ironic I took a immunity defense pill and I got another cold a week after recovering from one.
IMG_6115

Overall, I probably wouldn’t use this in the future. I need a stronger probiotic (this one claims to have 2.5 Billion CFUs of Lactobacillus GG) and the immune part either was ineffective, or a 10 day trial wasn’t long enough to see real results. Overall… I like the idea of this supplement, but the effectiveness…It’s OK… 2 1/2 stars

I got this carepackage from Salonpas! They sent me an array of pain relief in the form of patches, a spray and a gel. I was excited to try these out! I do a lot of heavy lifting at the gym, and sometimes my muscles ache (think: traps and legs!) or my lower back is stiff post deadlifts, so I thought these would certainly help. All together this bundle is valued at $100.

Deep Relieving Gel- This is clear and jelly-like…looks like a clear jelly fish in my hand! It absorbs quickly into my skin, and leaves no residue behind which is a plus. I put a dime size amount on upper back and neck.I wish I used gloves since the smell of menthol stayed on my hands for a while even post washing! But now I know for next time.

It first started with a cooling sensation, then warmed up. It felt pretty good…but needed more than it said I think. Next time around I used a little more than a dime-sized drop and felt better. My neck and trap area seemed to loosen up a bit! 4 stars

Pain Relief Patch-

Smaller, beige in color, and thin. It was Easy to apply, and stays on easy.I applied to my lower back, and it starts with cooling sensation, and then that was it. Generally ineffective…I didn’t feel anything after that initial mild cooling sensation, and my back feels the same. As a plus, it didn’t fall off. Maybe it needs to be used on smaller areas? However I would argue that if it isn’t meant for the lower back, they can’t advertise it as use for lower back. 1 star

Pain Relieving Gel Patch-HOT-

IMG_2410I used these post heavy deadlift day when I woke up to a sore back. The patches were flimsy but thick, and flexible. It was relatively easy to apply, even on my own lower back.

It started off with a cooling sensation, and left with heat. It didn’t’ seem to penetrate deeply at all, more like surface, but still helped loosen up my lower back/make it feel a little better.

The patches didn’t stay on easily. I put one on and ate breakfast, and just shifting in my chair caused the patch to start to peel off. I reapplied it a few times until I finally took it off out of frustration. Luckily, the heating sensation continued for quite some time post patch removal. However, annoying! 2 ½ stars

Pain Relieving Jet Spray-  Alrighty, let’s be blunt here…this one stinks. Literally, and figuratively. The smell is awful…like a foot cream or something mixed with menthol. It comes on nice and cool, which feels nice, but it literally does NOTHING! I sprayed it on my hamstrings and at first felt nothing. I tried another day and put more on, and again, nothing. Ineffective. Feels good being sprayed on, but did not work for me.  1/2 star

Arthritis Pain patch- This one was applied to the knee (don’t we all have arthritis in our knees?!) It was a comfortable patch, you don’t feel it while it’s on, and stays on easy. It was relatively thin. There was a cooling sensation that seemed to come and go during the duration of wearing the patch, but nothing spectacular.  2 stars
IMG_2405IMG_2406

SO, a summary. If you are going to buy any Salonpas products, I would go for the deep relieving gel. It’s a little stinky, but hey, get some rubber gloves, rub it in, and enjoy. And while the patches are less smelly, they were also generally ineffective for me, except the Gel patch, which worked better but hardly stayed on. I would skip the Jet Spray entirely…my mother and I both tried it and both felt NOTHING! Stay pain free, my friends!!! 😀

I received these products for free. This is an unbiased review.

Blake’s Hearty Beef Stew

Author: Healthnuttxo

IMG_0964

Saw this at Target today (the best store in the world, duh) and decided to give it a whirl. I often stay away from frozen dinners for a few reasons…
1. Full of sodium (hellooooo bloating)
2. Full of preservatives (how about some BHT with your carrots?)
3. Teeny portions for a lot of money

And while this one looked small, the sodium levels were low, and it was a natural dish so no preservatives or colors added. I’ve also had Blake’s chicken pot pie before and it was scrumptious. So I decided to give it a whirl.

Suggested cooking method is the oven. Did I use the oven? Of course I did….the microwave oven (see what I did there?) 😉

Here’s what it looked like:

Smaller than I thought. Frozen dinner? How about a frozen snack….

There was literally 3 pieces of beef in here. THREE. TEENY. PIECES. I am a big girl (okay, I’m not a big girl, but my stomach likes big portions), and I can easily down a plate of meatballs, steak, hamburger, etc. And still be hungry. So I knew this wasn’t promising.

The first piece of beef was scrumptious. Soft, tender, flavorful. Bits of garlic and pepper, perfectly complimented with the gravy. Reminded me of the stew my mom used to make…mmm.

The other two pieces of beef were fatty. Half fat I should say. White, visible fat. Chewy and bleh. Some people like fatty meat. I am not one of them. Moving on…

The carrots and peas were on point. Carrots were perfect consistency, and peas were nice and crisp. It reminded me of the inside of a pot pie. Both flavorful and fresh. Very good.

The square potatoes were an epic fail. These were supposed to be red skin potatoes? They tasted like the super starchy brown ones you can make french fries with. They were essentially a block of mush. Starchy mush. Awful.

The gravy was thick, but gelatinous, which probably meant it had a high fat content. And seeing as my mere 3 pieces of beef could not possibly contribute all 12 grams of fat, I assume the rest of the fat was in the gravy. Which I will admit, was delicious and flavorful. It held the dish together nicely and went well with everything. Even those awful potatoes.

Overall? Meh. Hearty? Hardly. I wasn’t even hungry when I ate this and I think I am hungrier post meal. Would not buy again, but if bought for me I would eat it. 2 1/2 stars
