Telula Organic Juice

Author: Healthnuttxo

IMG_9608

I got some samples from a company I have not heard of before, called Telula. They make organic, NON-GMO, and not from concentrate juices made from fruits and vegetables. They are cold pressed and also are free of added sugar.

They sent me some fun flavored samples to try, in Spicy Lemon, Green Zing, and Coconut Citrus.

Let’s start with Spicy Lemon, which has 3 lemons, 6.5 peppers, and 5 teaspoons of honey in each bottle. Honey is technically sugar, so if they add that to juice, I am a little confused how they can claim no added sugar. Perhaps they meant no CANE sugar, but honey is glucose…aka sugar.
Anyway, this bottle had 70 calories a serving, 17 carbs, 16 sugars, and 0’s across the board for fat, fiber and protein.

This one was actually really good! It is like a tangy lemonade, with the slightest bit of heat, but also sweet. It is very clean and refreshing tasting. I was definitely afraid of this because of the name…I think a more appropriate name would be Zesty Lemonade or something along those lines, because I certainly wouldn’t pick this up in store based off the name alone. However, the taste is delicious! The heat from the peppers leaves a little lingering flavor on your tongue as well. 4 stars.

Next up, Green Zing. This one has 5 spinach bunches, 1.5 cucumbers, 2.5 ginger roots, 1 apple, 2 heads of kale, 1/2 a lemon, and 2.5 celery stalks in one bottle. Dang!! It has 90 calories per 8 ounce serving, with 23 carbs/20 grams of sugar.

This is so, so, SO good! I wish I could drink this all day. It is sweet, much sweeter than I expected, and you can very slightly taste the celery. It is super refreshing, which I think might be from the cucumbers, and tastes like apple juice a bit as well but not as “sugary” tasting and not as tart. This is the best juice I’ve ever had, and you cannot taste the vegetables! A great juice for kids who won’t eat veggies…just don’t tell them it’s in there! 5 stars

Lastly, Coconut Citrus + Chia.  This one has half a coconut, 2 carrots, 3/4 of an orange, 1 lemon, 1 apple, and 5 tsps. of Chia. This has 120 calories per 8 ounce serving, with 1.5 grams of fat, 23 carbs, 5 grams of fiber, 17 grams of sugar and 3 grams of protein. This one was my least favorite. It was a little tangy, and thicker than any of the other juices. It had coconut flavor, but a bit of an over powering carrot flavor too. The lemon also definitely shines through here. I am not big on consistency in liquids…I don’t like pulp in my OJ and I do not like bubble tea…so the Chia seeds aren’t my favorite. I don’t like “chewing” my drinks.  This almost reminds me of a slightly fruiter V8 tomato juice. Not a huge fan. 3 stars

As a diabetic, I really do not drink juice unless my blood sugar is low. So I may buy a bottle to keep on hand in my fridge, but I will not be drinking on a regular basis. However, I really enjoyed these, ESPECIALLY the Green Zing one, so they are worth a shot!

IMG_4779Ahhh summer….what a great time of the year. However, with every great thing comes tiny bits of annoyances, right? Summer’s annoyances = BUGS and SUNBURN!!!! Two things that can turn outside play time into a serious pain (literally).

Selestial Soap sent me some of their natural bug sprays and sunscreen. There is the
I’ll Fly Away 100% naturally non-toxic Insect Repellent,

the Protect Extreme 100% naturally non-toxic Sunscreen with skin moisturizers, SPF of 30,

& Protect Extreme 100% naturally non-toxic Sunscreen/ Repellent Combo with SPF of 30.

So let’s begin!
I’ll Fly Away 100% naturally non-toxic Insect Repellent. I LOVE THIS STUFF! I hate the smell of traditional bug spray…smells like straight up chemicals. This has a nice lemongrass smell, not too strong, but noticeable. It is non greasy, and most of all…EFFECTIVE!!! I wore it almost every night I went out with my friends or to walk the dog. They all got bit up, and I maybe got one bug bite. I couldn’t help but brag about this product to my friends, it is relatively inexpensive, natural, and effective.  You can buy it here. 5 stars

Protect Extreme 100% naturally non-toxic Sunscreen with skin moisturizers, SPF of 30

This product is a bit runny, make sure you shake it well before use. I did not do that and had a large waterfall of white liquid running down my hands. Oops.

Happy to report no sunburn with this product…I put it on my face, and although I did not break out, you could definitely feel it on. It didn’t feel greasy per se, but there was a “residue” left behind. Also…this stuff does not rub in well! Below is the product RUBBED in on my friend who is tan already for the summer, but as you can see, the white of the sunscreen is totally noticeable.

IMG_4391 IMG_4392

this is an HOUR post application. It was applied liberally but not excessively. So while effective…a little annoying to have a super ghost-like face. No break outs, no burns…but I would stick to body parts and not my face for this one. 3 1/2 stars

Protect Extreme 100% naturally non-toxic Sunscreen/ Repellent Combo with SPF of 30.

This is essentially the same two products in one…just as effective too. No sunburns, no breakouts, same “residue” feel on skin, and still need to shake well before use. The lemongrass scent from the bug spray component is stronger smelling than the spray alone. I think this is good for days when you’re going hiking or camping, something where you’ll be outside where bugs and sun are both factors. I like the concept! 3 1/2 stars

Overall, good products. I will definitely buy the bug spray in the future. I LOVE it!!!! The other products are worth a try as well, just be warned of the ghost-like color that may be left behind! (muhahahaha!)

I received this product for free. This is an unbiased review.

Time for a review…of my absolute kryptonite! Peanut butter!

Seriously though…I can refuse any baked good in front of me, but put a jar of peanut butter and a spoon nearby, and you’ll find me melting.

I go through the temptation  thoughts like Spongebob with water when he visits Sandy for the first time.
“I don’t need it…
I don’t need it…
I DEFINITELY don’t need it…

… I   N E E D   IT !!! ”

But, alas, here I am reviewing two peanut butters from Pacific Beach. I will say I DID practice portion control, measured on my scale, and then left the jar in the other room so I didn’t finish a jar in 2 days (I made it to 3!!! [just kidding!])

The first one up- the “Our Signature” peanut butter spread.
2 tbsp is 152 calories, 12 g fat (3 saturated), 51 mg sodium, 9 grams carbs, 1 gram fiber, 6 grams sugar,  4 grams protein.
This one is gluten free (WAS gluten free I should say…that jar is long gone)
This…was unbelievable. I’m not going to lie, I am biased with peanut butter bc well I love peanut butter, but THIS was SO GOOD. It was sweet and creamy, but also had bits of peanuts in it so it had a bit of a crunch. It had a white chocolate flavor to it, was a bit buttery tasting..UGH it was SO GOOD! It had the perfect balance of sweetness too-not too sweet where it felt sugary. Just right. The only thing that kept my guilt at bay was it was 152 calories for 2 Tbsp as opposed to the usual 190 cals. WOO!!
5 stars

Next up, the Organic Valencia peanut butter.
2 tbsp is 168 calories, 14 g fat (2 saturated), 58 mg sodium, 6 grams carbs, 1 gram fiber, 7 grams protein.

This one was also tasty, although definitely more moderate in flavor. I think it could have used a tad more salt, and was a teeny bit bland. But, still a good peanut butter. Again, it was creamy but also had chunks of peanuts in it giving it a bit of a crunch. A nice thick spread, that could easily be spread on bread or eaten from the jar (somehow I always dangerously choose the latter…). I think this is a good nut butter to pair with jelly on a sandwich bc it’s a good base. This one is gluten free and sugar free. I almost wish it had a pinch of sugar or something to bring out more flavor. 3 1/2 stars.

Overall, some tasty treats! I would love to try more from Pacific Beach, because I think their other flavors sounds phenomenal as well. However, currently trying to lean out for summer and I have NO self control around this stuff…bc it is too damn good.

How many of you are peanut butter addicts like myself? It’s so good it hurts!! D:

Quest Nutrition Cookies & Cream Quest Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

QUEST BARS!

I have been a fan of these bars for almost 2 years when I got a box to try from the company. Since then, I have been hooked. They seem to almost have blown up in popularity, and well deserved…these things are delicious and perfect when you are on a strict diet and need something high in fiber, low in sugar, and high in protein.

I’m sure almost everyone has heard of the new flavor of Quest Bars that came out recently- Cookies & Cream!! I got a free box of these bars to try, and I was pretty excited about it.

I mean come on…look at this bar. You can see “cookie crumbs” and chunks of white creamy “chocolate”!

First lets talk nutrition. This bar is GLUTEN FREE!, 180 calories, 7 grams fof fat (3 of which are saturated), 310 mg of sodium, 22 grams of carbohydrate (17 of which are fiber), 1 gram of sugar, 2 grams of Erythritol (sugar alcohol), and 21 g of protein.

I use Quest bars as a snack, as I usually eat 3 meals and 2 snacks, or I’ll eat half when I have those bad hunger pains that just will NOT relent. The nutrition facts are quite awesome- not TOO high in fat, nice amount of fiber (which is ideal for me since I am a Diabetic for glucose control) and only 1 gram of sugar.

Okay, that’s all cool but how does it taste?
The bar is honestly, amazing. It’s my new favorite flavor. It’s chewy and dense, sweet but not overly sweet. The white chocolate chunks are creamy and have a vanilla flavor to them, reminiscent of the cream in an Oreo cookie. The cookie crumbs scattered in the bar is what won me over. Crunchy and tastes very similar to a cookie!! When you find a part of the bar with a huge piece of cookie crumbs or the white chocolate it is like hitting lotto— cookies & cream lotto 😉

Overall, I love these. I always order directly from the site, because I feel like they are freshest and softest from the website. These get 5 stars from me. I honestly can’t complain about a thing.

Q- What is your favorite protein bar? Or what is your favorite Quest Bar flavor? Leave me a comment below 🙂

MORE new flavors to try thanks to the kind folks over at Quest Bar :] This time around, it’s Quest Bar’s Lemon Cream Pie, Peanut Butter & Jelly, and Apple Pie. All of those sound absolutely decadent, no? Now how would they taste in bar form? Let’s see…. 🙂

FIRST UP on this gluten free, high fiber and no sugar added line of bars is the Lemon Cream Pie.

Ok…now this one is GOOD! The flavor almost reminds me of lemon skittles, which sounds kind of weird but it’s not at all! It’s very moist and chewy, and very fresh tasting. Seriously…I was gushing over this bar while I was eating it (“Oh my GOSH THIS IS GOOD!” haha). What’s weird is I am not a lemon kind of gal…I normally pass on lemon flavored things. But this one had the perfect amount of sweetness, and wasn’t tart at all. The mouth feel of the bar is also really great. JUST PERFECT!!! 5 stars :]

Next up, Peanut Butter & Jelly.

Now you probably predict another 5 star review, huh? Thinking, mannnnn Lisa loves peanut butter she must love this bar. Actually, this was my least favorite! :[ It was considerably denser than the other bars and not as moist. It wasn’t really sweet, and had kind of a combination of a “toast” and peanut flavor, with slight and sweet undertones of a berry/ jelly flavor.  I did like the little peanuts in the bar which added a little crunch 🙂 3 1/2 stars

Lastly, Apple Pie.

Yummy! This bar was chewy and sweet, and definitely had a great flavor. I could detect a nice cinnamon flavor throughout the bar, but not much of an “apple” flavor unless you bit into an actual piece of dried apple. I DID like the fact that there were scattered dried apple skins in the bar, which added a yummy and sweet apple flavor. However, the skins were sporadic, so there were bites where I had just the bar/cinnamon dominant flavor. However, I still enjoyed this bar and would eat again. 4 stars

Annnnnnd here’s the nutritional facts for the Apple Pie Bar.

Quest Bar Cinnamon Roll & Coconut Cashew

Author: Healthnuttxo

The LOVELY people over at Quest Bar sent me a  free sample box of 11 of their products, the QuestBar.

What’s a QUESTBAR you ask? This particular line of protein bars states it is “the only protein bar with a perfect nutritional profile” according to the insert I was sent alongside the bars. Each bar has 20 grams of protein, 4-6 grams of “non fiber carbs”,  has no added sugar, no soy protein, and is gluten free.

I got the box yesterday, and already tried 2 of the bars. (Eager beaver over here 😉 )

The first one I tried was Coconut Cashew.

It was a tan colored bar, about the size, length-wise, of my palm.  Upon first bite, I though…cinnamon? There was a bit of a cinnamon flavor, which accompanied the yummy coconut. It was very chewy, very soft, and dense. It was sweet, but did not have a sugary taste to it. There was a bit of an aftertaste, but not overpoweringly so. I LOVED how chewy it was, and how it had a good bite to it. And although I didn’t really taste much cashew flavor, it was predominantly coconut and that “cinnamon” I tasted, I think the cashew may have played a role in the softness and (very) slightly oily consistency. You can see when you touch the bar it’s not super dry and I think the bit of fat from the nuts may have something to do with that. This one gets 4.5 stars

Next up, The Cinnamon Roll flavor.

I was recommended by 2 people to try this one, so I had high expectations. And…they were most certainly met!  This bar was SO good! Upon first bite, I definitely tasted the cinnamon. It was sweet, but again, not sugary tasting. It was also very soft, chewy and dense, as well as it had a very fresh and moist feel to it. I could almost taste the “icing” in the bar on the “cinnamon roll”, and….in fact…it DID pretty much taste like a cinnamon roll! Dang!!  I will definitely be ordering more of these in the future, as I really enjoyed it. I was quite sad when it was over, because the flavor was phenomenal and the nutritional facts were awesome to back it up. It was a tad high in sodium (300 mg) , but nothing too outrageous. 5 stars

One thing I liked about these bars, is that although they had a good deal of fiber in them, it didn’t bother my stomach. Sometimes with products that have a LOT of fiber (more than 8 grams or so added) I notice my stomach will hurt, but these did not do anything, which I liked. I was very content and filled with the bar, and really enjoyed both of these flavors 🙂 More reviews to come!

Here is the nutritional facts for the Coconut Cashew flavor.

Birdbath Bakery Chocolate Chip Cookie

Author: Healthnuttxo

I shouldn’t have done it.

Coming home from the gym today, I passed by this bakery, Birdbath Bakery. I have such a weak spot for cookies. Cake? dont need it. Ice cream? pass. Brownies? no thank you. But cookies? I. Cannot. Resist. Cookies.

So after I elliptical-ed (is that a word? It is now!) for an hour (ok, ok, 45 minutes) I wanted to take a peek inside the bakery. Maybe get a muffin or something. And then I saw a stack of cookies in various flavors. Some of them were vegan, and some weren’t I ended up getting 2 vegan cookies, and 1 not vegan- the chocolate chip, for 5 dollars.

The staff was very friendly, and I overheard that if you brought your own container in, you get $1 off your purchase AND, I read on the website you get 25% off if you come by skateboard or bike! Eco friendly alert!! 🙂

You can check out their website here- they are pretty amazing!

ANYWAY, back to the goodies. I already froze the other two cookies to eat later, because I KNOW I would eat all 3 in one sitting if they were in front of me.

This cookie. Was amazingly-amazing.I mean, really, HOW could this (half a cookie picture- wonder where the other half went?? =p ) taste bad?!?

Also note the grease spots on the bag. THATS how you know something
tastes good!

This cookie had the slightest crisp on the outside, and was soft, gooey and rich on the inside. It had a buttery taste, and was rather sweet, but very delicious. I noticed it even had a slight pretzel taste to it- weird – but it worked. It added that very slight salty taste that accompanied the big, gooey chocolate chunks.

Overall, a delicious cookie. Aside from the pretzel taste thing going on, a perfect chocolate chipper in my eyes. And at 3 for 5 $, thats a little over $1.50 per cookie, which isn’t too bad. Plus I’m loving the eco-friendly aspect of this place!!!

I kinda love this place.

I kinda couldn’t stop eating this cookie. In fact I demolished it in about 5 minutes.

I kinda can’t go here unless I went to the gym that day.

I kinda dont want to know how many calories, fat and sugar is in this cookie.

Because…I kinda dont care.

It’s that good 😉

SO, if you ever have the chance to go to Birdbath Bakery, I highly recommend the chocolate chip cookie! This was the non-vegan version, but they HAVE a vegan one as well!!  5 stars

Ever been to a vegan bakery? Which one? What did you get?

Ok. I have a confession. And is has something to do with Newman’s Own Organics Organic Cranberries.

The confession is…

I think I like these more than candy.

No really. SERIOUSLY. I think I’d rather eat a bag of these, than a bag of gummy bears. Or gummy worms. Or maybe even a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup (oh yea…I said it).

Now I know what you’re thinking. Please. She’s just saying that, there’s no way FRUIT can taste better than candy.

But these cranberries my friend, are AMAZING. To eat out of the bag…

Or on top of a salad… ( highly reccomended).  Online cooking schools are an option for indulging your passion for food, nutrition, and healthy cooking. Home-cooked meals combined with healthy packaged meals are a realistic option for many families.

They are just perfect. Chewy, sweet, not even the slightest bit tart. They taste so fresh and so pure and so GOOD. You know when you go to the mall, and there is that counter that sells dried pineapple slices with sugar all over them (or….at least I hope you know what I’m talking about)? And it tastes soooo good? Well, picture that, but in cranberry form. And not drowning in sugar.

Yes. One of the ingredients for these cranberries is sugar. In fact, from the bag, the exact ingredients are “Organic Cranberries, Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Sunflower Oil”.  But, it’s not like the cranberries are rolling around in sugar where it’s visible.

Either way, these rock. Even though I got my bag for free from the company, I plan on buying these over and over again (and again…).

Oh. And I have another confession. I don’t even really like cranberries. So, now you know that these are amazing. 5 stars

What about you- any healthy food that you adore more than an unhealthy food? Do tell!

blurry out of excitement for me to eat more cranberries. Obviously =)

Ever go grocery shopping, with the intent of buying one thing, and then letting your stomach decide what you actually buy?

Yea. That’s what happened here. That’s how this Kashi Margherita Stone-Fired Thin Crust Pizza ended up in my cart, then in the stove, and then eaten by yours truly. It sort of happened like this…

I figured I would walk by the natural food section of my grocery store, just to browse( for the record, browsing in that section is NOT wallet friendly for me. I spend a LOT of money on food!!) and then  I passed by this pizza.  I’ve seen this pizza over and over at the store, and just never bought it. And after eating it, I’m really mad at myself for not buying it sooner.

Doesn’t this look delicious? Because it was delicious x 10

While it was cooking, my kitchen transformed to normal kitchen to a pizzeria. Seriously. It smelled so good! After it came out, I thought I would be disappointed because it was a VERY thin crust, but rest assured, it was delicious. I cooked mine on a pan, so the edges were a bit crunchy, but the middle part of the crust was nice and soft.

The pizza as a whole wasn’t super greasy, so that made me happy. The crust was even pretty flavorful, with a bit of garlic and a bit of spice weaved in.  It even tasted “doughy” despite the fact that it was a thin crust. The tomatoes tasted unbelievably fresh, and were juicy, as if they were cut straight from the garden. There were garlic and onion flavors mixed in with the cheese, of which there was just the right amount of. Not drowning in cheese, and not so little that I had to wonder if the company remembered to put any cheese on at all, but just right.

Overall? This pizza rocked. It also has whole grains and omega-3’s according to the box. I had half of the pizza left over that I left on the pan, which was devoured by another person as soon as they came home. So much for leftovers… ; )   5 stars

Lotus Biscoff Spread

Author: Healthnuttxo

Remember my love for Lotus Biscoff Cookies?

Well take that love, multiply by 100, and put it in a jar. Literally.

This stuff is BEYOND amazing. I’ve gone through almost 3 jars already (not at once…over a few days!!), and plan on ordering more soon when I run out. I don’t even put it on anything, I eat it straight from the jar. That’s how good it is.

The first time I bought it, I saw it at a specialty store. Biscoff? What is that? I thought (turns out, I tried Biscoff spread BEFORE the cookies!)

Once I got home, I took a spoon out and tried some. Oh my goodness. It was like candy in a jar. Not saying it was super sweet like candy, but so delicious like candy.

Why, yes. Half that jar IS gone. And lets just say I did not share...

The consistency is super smooth, and light. No bumps at all, and no oil separation. It’s sweet, and I can certainly taste the delicious-ness of the Biscoff Cookies. The best way to describe it if you never had a Biscoff Cookie is that I think it tastes almost like cinnamon graham crackers that were grinded up and made into this delicious spread. It’s soooo good! (Am I gushing too much? Is it OK that I love this spread that much?!?!)

So. Overall, I guess my only complaint is that this isn’t filling at all. As in, I could TOTALLY eat the whole jar in a day, so having it near me has my will power being tempted all day long. Which makes sense, seeing as it only has .5 grams of protein per serving. My other complaint would be is that the store I originally bought it from doesn’t carry it anymore, so I have to buy it online. But honestly, this is so delicious I could never stop eating it! 5 stars and on the list of my favorite things EVER!

Have you ever had Biscoff Cookies or Biscoff Spread? If so, what’s your favorite way to eat it? Honestly, all I need is a spoon =)
