Oogie’s Hatch Chili Con Queso Popcorn

Author: Healthnuttxo

First off, I’m already a pretty big fan of Oogie’s Gourmet Popcorn. I REALLY liked the Smoked Gouda popcorn, which if you haven’t checked out already, you can read about it here.

Another bag that Oogie’s sent me to try was the Hatch Chili Con Queso Popcorn. I didn’t know what to expect with this popcorn. Would it be spicy? Would it taste cheesy? Salty? The only sure way to find out….open the bag and eat some! ; )

As you can see, it had an orangey tint. It’s even brighter than that picture depicts.

The flavor was certainly different. At first, a very slight cheesy taste, that kind of reminded me of nacho cheese. Then it tastes a bit salty, and reminded me of white cheddar popcorn. Then, WHAM! This little bit of heat and spice creeps up and is left with the aftertaste, with a slight burn lingering in my mouth. It was pretty good, and was spicy enough to detect, but not overly spicy that made me go running to the fridge for some milk to calm the spicyness. There was also a bit of oniony flavor in this light and fluffy popcorn, that added a nice touch.

While I liked this gluten free popcorn and think its very tasty,  I dont think I could eat more than a serving at a time. But hey, maybe that’s a good thing..no eating the whole bag in one sitting! Another thing I noticed with this bag and the other Oogie’s popcorn I have had, is that the seasoning is very hit or miss. Some kernels have a lot (which, I LOVE!) and others are bland. But then again, I feel that way with some other brands of chips too. I guess it’s hard to evenly coat everything!!

Overall, 3 1/2 stars. Pretty good, but I kind of wish it was a bit more cheesy tasting, for the “Queso” aspect. I also found myself coughing quite a bit from the spice/heat of the popcorn. But then again…I’m a wimp when it comes to spicy foods =P  My favorite is still the Smoked Gouda!

SPICY FOODS- yay or nay? I would take super mild peach salsa over hot salsa any day =)

I received this to try for free for the company, but my opinion remains unaffected.

Corazonas Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Square

Author: Healthnuttxo

Remember my oatmeal debate?  How I’d love to eat oatmeal all the time since it’s healthy, filling and deliciously versatile. But, I’m, well lazy. I don’t like cleaning pots, or waiting for the oatmeal to cook. Especially if a cold bowl of cereal is ready in five minutes after slciing up some fruit and pouring some almond milk. It’s just too easy!

However, I discovered I could still eat those healthy oats, but in an oatmeal square. I enjoyed the Chocolate Brownie with Almonds Oatmeal Square by Corazona, so I was sure I would also like the Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Square they sent me to try for free as well.

Some quick facts from the wrapper, this oatmeal square has 16 grams of whole grain, is all  natural, and “is made with ingredients proven in more than 140 clinical studies to help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol”.

I opened this square up before a workout for a quick boost. I didn’t have time for a complete breakfast, so I figured this would be good to give me some energy alongside a scoop of peanut butter (you probably saw that one coming ; ) ). This also explains why there isn’t a picture. I’m a bad blogger and was in a rush to eat this. Sorry! : (

This bar was actually really tasty. It was decently sized, about the size of my palm. It was sweet and almost fruity in flavor, it was chewy and a bit dense, but really good.  It was light and slightly sticky as well. It had a mild oatmeal cookie flavor, but wasn’t as sweet as an oatmeal cookie would be. The chocolate chips added a nice touch, and tasted like a smooth milk chocolate. Also, the texture and taste almost reminded me of a sticky banana bread. It was really quite good!

Overall 4 1/2 stars. I would certainly buy it if I saw it in stores, and it provided me with a good amount of energy for the gym! Plus, who doesn’t like eating chocolate chips with some whole grains? :P

Favorite oatmeal add in? Mine is good ol cinnamon, butter, and milk. Like this yummy recipe here! : )

Oogie’s Gourmet Popcorn Smoked Gouda

Author: Healthnuttxo

Source

Now, I’m not a cheese kind of person. I could totally live my entire life without eating any, and I’m even known to pull the cheese off my pizza (sorry!). So I wasn’t expecting this popcorn to be anything special.

Ok, ok. Smoked Gouda. Probably tastes like the rest of the popcorn I had in the past. I thought.

But I was so wrong.

This popcorn, is ah-mazing.

Sure, it looks like your average, store bought popcorn. But it wasn’t.

It was light, and crunchy, and fluffy popcorn. Fluffy might be a weird adjective to describe popcorn, mostly because I immediately asociate fluffy with pillows, but it was fluffy. And yummy.

It was cheesy, light and had just a wee bit of heat/spice to it. There was almost a (get ready for it) BACON flavor to it. I haven’t eaten bacon in years, but bacon is goood. Turkey bacon always hit the spot for me, and this popcorn had flavors vvery similar to bacon. Perhaps it was the “smoked” aspect of the popcorn. Regardless, I’m going to roll with it.

It was also a bit salty, but in a good way, and some other deeper flavors going on. I really, really liked this popcorn. And if I see it in the stores, I’m definitely buying it again. Minus the fact I already demolished the bad. So much for sharing.

4 1/2 stars. I may be becoming a cheese convert. Also loving that it’s gluten free, all natural, and has some healthy and filling fiber : )

What about YOU- what’s your favorite type of cheese? If I had to pick, parmesan all the way!

I received this bag of popcorn to try for free from the company. Regardless, my opinions are unaffected and genuine.

What’s a movie without POPCORN? (Hey, I know a few people who go to the movies FOR the popcorn! =P)

But the popcorn at movies can be loaded with calories and fat (and I’m just going to go out on a limb here and assume, it’s NOT the healthy fats!). Plus, there can even be trans fats in some popcorns! So I was excited when Oogie’s provided me this bag of Movie Lovers Buttered Popcorn for free. Now I could pop my own movie in at home, and eat a bag of yummy, buttery popcorn!

Some quick facts, according to the bag, this is all natural, gluten free, and whole grain. So, if I wasn’t already digging this popcorn, I was slowly liking it more and more!

I was excited to try this popcorn. For some reason when I opened it, I was expecting a yellow colored popcorn, kind of like the buttery flavored drenched popcorn at the movies. However, it was a pale white which surprised me a bit.

Some pieces had more flavor than others, which was a seasoning. I wouldn’t say it was super buttery, but more of a mild butter and even a flavor akin to parmesan cheese. Was it good? yes. Yummy? yes. Suitable for those who drown their popcorn in butter at the movies? No… But that doesn’t mean it wasn’t delicious.

The pieces of popcorn were fresh and had a soft crunch. Like I said, some pieces were bland, and others had more seasoning on it. It was slightly salty, which made me crave a Zevia soda really badly (and let’s be honest…I was also craving a Diet Coke!!).

Overall, it was pretty good, but not as buttery as I would have liked. There was a good amount of popcorn in the bag, which made for a filling snack at 160 calories, and 3 grams of fiber. For me, it was a 3 1/2 star snack !

What snack do you get when you go to the movies? I used to actually get the soft pretzels and cheese instead of the popcorn when I was little! =)

I know what your thinking.

What are these doing on a healthy food and product blog?

If it’s any consolation, I didn’t buy these. A friend of mine did. But I took a peek at the ingredients, and well, they were natural. And, well, I was in the mood for a sweet treat. See the connection? =)

So out came Snackwell’s Fudge Drizzled Caramel Popcorn.

I tried a few pieces, and thought they were so overly sweet. They tasted like caramel popcorn, but very sweet caramel popcorn, with the added “fudge drizzle”. I don’t think the fudge drizzle is really even all that necessary, because while the flavor is there, its not that prominent. It was sort of like a chocolatey undertone.

There is only about 3 grams of fat and brown sugar is first ingredient, so it definitely has more of a candy appeal than a savory. It does have a slightly salty flavor as well, but certainly mostly sweet.

The popcorn is crunchy, which is good, and I would estimate about 25-35 pieces of popcorn per bag, which isn’t bad for 130 calories. Instead of eating straight up, I’d like to mix this in something. A trail mix, or even a bag of buttered popcorn as a “treat”. I think its way tooooo sweet to eat by itself, but if super sweet’s your thing, you’d might like this!

A friend of mine tried this, and she really liked it. But then again, she is guilty for buying carrot cake solely to eat the entire icing off the top and throw away the cake. Although she won’t admit it, but I’ve seen her do it.

I on the other hand, probably wont eat this again. There is 18 grams of sugar ( which I believe is 4 and a half teaspoons!) in one little bag, so really, it was way too sweet for me. In fact, I think I feel a cavity coming on ( just kidding). 3 stars

Anyone guilty of eating frosting from the container?….Yea. So bad, but so, sooo good! When I heard of Baked Classices Vanilla Frosting Multigrain Crisps I was very intrigued- any opportunity to eat something that tastes like vanilla frosting (without getting the weird looks from me eating it from the container…) is definitely worth a try!

The company sent me some of these crisps to try for free. From the information they gave me as well, these crisps are gluten free, kosher, and all  natural. I even thought the saying on the front of the bag was pretty cute - “Licking the bowl is okay. Just make sure it’s your own bowl”.

light dusting of deliciousness on top =)

Round in shape, these were crunchy and light. They had a slight powdery residue on it, which was probably the flavoring. The taste was sooo yummy! Sweet, but not too sweet, and really did remind me of vanilla frosting! I liked how I couldn’t taste the “chip” flavor. For example, when potato chips are flavored, I dont like when I get some chips that have hardly any seasoning at all, and taste like potatoes. These crisps were evenly flavored for the most part, and really delicious!

Another thing I loved? Only 4 grams of sugar!! I think that’s pretty awesome, and they still have a vanilla frosting appeal to them. Due to my sweet tooth, I would like them just a tad bit sweeter (I am one to eat straight from the container, after all), but they are pretty delicious as is. 4 1/2 stars

What’s your favorite flavor of frosting? Have you been guilty of eating frosting from the container as well? It’s so hard to resist! =)

I FINALLY went to Whole Foods yesterday, and got a bunch of awesome stuff! The person I went with only bought a few things (I’d say the ratio of my things to her things was like 50:1) , but she got some of the Terra Crinkles Sweet Potato Chips in the Candied Sweets variety. Driving home, I couldn’t wait to try them, since I’m a huge fan of sweet potatoes, and they sounded so yummy!

So I opened the bag, which was a big fail, since it completely ripped down the middle and was not picture-taking worthy after (oops!). I argued it wasn’t my fault the bag ripped so funny, I just opened it according to the little tear on top of the bag. I suppose it was my fault there was an enormous rip down the front of the bag, but oh well. At least the insides were safe. Which, speaking of, here’s what they looked like inside the bag

And here’s a pic of just one chip

Yeeeep. That picture was taken in the car (no worries, I wasnt the driver!).
I may have eaten these on the way home from Whole Foods…. I told you I couldn’t wait! (:

I tried one, and first noticed how hard and crunchy they were. As for the flavor, I must say, very lackluster. The first thing both the person I was with and I thought of was Thanksgiving mashed sweet potatoes. But, to be perfectly honest, these chips were not as good. They had a very strong sweet potato flavor, but  it almost tasted burnt. There was a light dusting of cinnamon flavor, and just the tiniest hint of salt and the tiniest hint of sweetness. I tried a couple more, and I wasn’t really a fan, nor was the person I was with.

Overall, 1 1/2 stars. I was really disappointed with these- I really wanted to like them! I feel as if they need to be sweeter and/or more cinnamon-y in flavor, or even more salty. They were rather bland and I really didn’t enjoy them. They are also high in fat, but I do like that they have some fiber, are low in sugar, and have 50% vitamin A needs per serving.

What’s your favorite way to eat a sweet potato? I must say, sweet potato fries always win me over =)

I managed to not rip the part of the bag with the nutrition label on it. Woo!

Brad’s Raw Leafy Kale

Author: Healthnuttxo

If ever there was a time to apply the saying “Don’t Judge a Book By It’s Cover”, I think it would be appropriate now. Although this snack may not look appetizing, it really is tasty!

I bought this at Whole Foods a little while ago, after previously being given a free sample of it they were handing out before that. According to the package, it is “vegan”, “gluten free”, “not baked”, “not fried”, and the flavor I got is the Naked Plain (Vegan Cheese). Before eating this snack, I never ate kale before, so I really had no idea what to expect.

Here’s what some looked like in a bowl.

When I opened up the container, it smelled cheesy, but keep in mind it is vegan. It was crunchy, crispy, and certainly did have a “leafy” consistency as the name states. It was salty and tasted like parmesan cheese, with just a slight vegetable flavor. I REALLY liked it! No one else in my house wanted to try it, probably because it resembled leaves, but it really is so tasty! I almost ate the whole container in one sitting! ;)

Overall, 4 1/2 stars. I really enjoyed it, and I want to try the other flavors! I also LOVED that there was 6 grams of protein, 139% vitamin A and 129% Vitamin C values per serving!! Talk about a healthy snack :)

1 ounce is 141 calories, 9 grams of fat, 13 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, 2 grams of sugar and 6 grams of protein.

What’s something you thought wasn’t going to be good tasting because of it’s appearance, but surprised you and turned out to be really yummy?

Kozy Shack CowRageous! Strawberry Pudding

Author: Healthnuttxo

I love pudding. In fact, I eat a chocolate pudding cup every day. I love the sweetness, the creamy texture, everything about it. So, at the store the other day, I went to purchase my chocolate pudding but I saw something new on the shelf- CowRageous! pudding, in STRAWBERRY flavor, by Kozy Shack. You know I was tempted. Well temptation won, because not only did I buy the strawberry pudding, but I also bought the chocolate pudding as well (you know, just in case!!)

First off, I loved the cartoon cow- how cute! I also love how this is made with natural ingredients, is gluten free, and has some fiber and calcium per cup. It was a bit on the small side, so I do wish that the serving was bigger.

Anyway, I opened up the cup and decided to have it with some fresh strawberries (and whipped cream, because, well, why not!?). Here’s what it looked like

Yea... I ate more whipped cream than that. :)

As you can see, my strawberries and whipped cream kind of swallowed up the pudding. Not a lot of pudding in the cup, but that’s what toppings are for!

It was thick and creamy, almost like a gel/pudding consistency, with more of a vanilla flavor with strawberry undertones. It wasn’t really all that sweet, I was expecting sweeter. In fact, my strawberries and the whipped cream were sweeter than the pudding. It also had a bit of a funky aftertaste, but nothing too overpowering. It was pretty good snack, and I enjoyed it, but it certainly won’t replace my love for my usual- the chocolate pudding.

Overall, 3 1/2 stars. It’s only 100 calories with 3 grams of fiber and 10% of the calcium needs per pudding cup. It was a bit small, however, so I would reccomend eating it with something else as well.

1 pudding cup is 100 calories, .5 grams of fat, 18 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, 14 grams of sugar, and 3 grams of protein.

If you could invent any flavor pudding, what would it be? I would do chocolate chip cookie dough pudding, or peanut butter! Mmmm! =)

Arico Cassava Chips Ginger on Fire

Author: Healthnuttxo

Source

I wasn’t sure what to expect of these chips. I saw the words “on Fire” which sounded like they’d be spicy, and “Ginger”, so I thought there would be a rather pungent, distinct flavor.  According to the bag, these were “Gluten Free”, “Dairy Free” and had “Twice the Fiber of Leading Brand Potato Chips”. Hmm… they sounded good!

I opened the bag to avery strong ginger smell,  I was scared to taste these. Once I did, the were a lot better than I expected! Crunchy chips, at first some saltiness happens, then there is just a tinge of sweetness, followed by a basic potato chip taste-with the exception of the burning sensation that ginger can provide. These are pretty good! I loved the mild sweetness they had to them, and the satisfying crunch.

Overall, pretty good chips! I can picture them going just perfect with a sandwich for lunch. A downside is that they are kind of high in saturated fat (3 grams), but on the plus side, the sodium isn’t too bad with 150 mg. 3 1/2 stars

1 oz is 150 calories, 6 grams of fat, 3 grams of saturated fat, 18 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, 1 gram of sugar and 1 gram of protein.

What’s your favorite flavor of chips? I happen to be partial to sour cream & onion or sweet barbeque!  : )

I was provided these chips to try for free from Arico Natural Foods Company.
