A surprise awaited me the other day when I opened my door- a box of free goodies from Classic Foods! They sent me a few bags of their new Poptillas, which are popped tortilla chips. According to the bag, they are “gluten free, popped not fried, no cholesterol, no high fructose corn syrup, no MSG, [and have] no preservatives”. They are also made with “whole grain corn”-Sounds like a solid start for a snack for me!

I flipped over the bag and inspected the nutritional information. 18 chips was 120 calories, with 6 grams of fat, 250 mg of sodium, 2 grams of fiber and 1 gram of sugar. Not bad! The sodium was a tad high, but that’s expected with snack food to give it that yummy flavor we all know and love 😉

I took a few out of the bag…

They looked like Popchips/soy chips. The flavor was actually quite good! It had a nice airy crunch, kind of like that with a soy crisp. The cheesy flavor was detected automatically, and there was a little bit of spice/garlic/onion flavor. Just the right amount of salty flavor, that makes me both enjoy it, yet want to have a glass of water nearby. They really reminded me of the flavor of nacho cheese!  In fact, it was like eating both the nacho cheese and the tortilla chip at once, since the flavor of the cheese was there, and the crunch from the nachos. Delicious!

Overall, I really like these! They definitely will fulfill a salty craving and have a satisfying crunch. Worth a try!!! 4.5 stars

Something new- Plentils by Enjoy Life Foods! But what exactly is a plentil? They are crunchy lentil chips! Wait but where did the “P” come from.

Um….

Not sure. Moving on.

I got a few free bags of the chips from Enjoy Life Foods to try for free. First one up for review, Margherita Pizza. Why? Because it was 11pm, I wanted pizza, but did NOT feel like leaving the house. I was hoping these chips would suffice a pizza craving, as well as be delicious on their own!

First of all, these chips are soooo crunchy! I really liked that, as nothing’s worse than when a chip is more oily than crunch (you know what I’m talking about!) or the chip falls apart the second it hits your mouth (also not cool…). Nope! These were light and crisp, not oily at all, and almost had a toasty-crunchy feel to them.

They were very yummy and flavorful, and surprisingly, did remind me of pizza! The pentils had a saucy and cheesy flavor to them, with undertones of basil, garlic and onion. They also had a salty flavor that was really quite good.

Overall, I like these! Don’t forget these are gluten free as well! 4 stars

Popcorn, Indiana Black & White Kettle Corn

Author: Healthnuttxo

POPCORN! What an awesome snack. You can get it sweet, salty, spicy, and chocolate-y too! We all know about my love for the last flavor I tried by Popcorn, Indiana (yea, that bag was gone in a day…) so I KNEW this one would be equally as good.

I opened up the bag that I got for free from the company, and saw pieces of kettlecorn, some drizzled generously in a black and white coating, and also “clumps” of popcorn. Meaning, there were “clumps” of 4-5 pieces of popcorn all being held together by a delicious black and white drizzle. Was I complaining? Nope. Not even a little 🙂

I tried one of the clumps. Mmm….delicious. The popcorn was light and fluffy, but still crunchy. The white and black coating was smooth and very sweet, and provided both a chocolate and vanilla type of flavor. The crunchy and slightly saltiness of the popcorn made the popcorn taste almost like chocolate covered pretzels…but better.

The popcorn was definitely on the sweet side, so I think it would go great with a glass of milk (soy, almond, moo juice, whatever fits your preferences 😉 ). But it was really good! I love black and white cookies, so black and white popcorn is certainly a new favorite.

YES, this was addictive. YES, I had more than a serving (hahaha way more than a serving…) and YES, the bag is currently gone (boo!). Therefore, this popcorn gets 4.5 stars. Glad I got a chance to try it! I believe I have seen it at Whole Foods during the holiday season. Keep an eye out, and if you have seen it please leave a comment so we can find it at the stores and enjoy! 🙂

And…..I may or may not have been so excited to try this that I ripped the bag. OOOOOOPS! =)

Ohhhhhhhhh man. Who knew they even MADE popcorn like this right? Dark Fudge Chocolate Chip KETTLEcorn? That’s like chocolate on top of amazing-ness….Am I right?

I got this bag for free from the company, but I highly recommend you go out and buy yourself one. Seriously.  There are no words for this popcorn besides that it’s one of the best things I have ever eaten (have I ever lied to you before???)

You want sweet? check. You want salty? check. You want CHOCOLATE? check! You get all three! (Ok…now onto the review, since I’m starting to sound like a TV Advertisement (“but that’s not all!!…” ;] )

The sweet and sugary tasting kettlecorn was crunchy and also had a bit of saltiness going on. Almost every piece of popcorn had some chocolate on top of it. The chocolate coating was rich, smooth and sweet, and just the perfect addition to the kettlecorn. It did have a dark chocolate flavor, but was also sweet enough that a milk-chocolate lover like myself could enjoy it.

This popcorn was like a twist on chocolate covered pretzels. So many delicious flavors, all in one! And seriously addictive. I would be lying if I told you I only had one serving (jokes!). Good thing the serving size was rather decent, I weighed a nice portion of it, and it was only a little bit over 28 grams (the serving size).

On the down side (womp womp), this snack is kind of high in sugar ( 12 grams per serving) and saturated fat ( 4.5 grams per serving). BUT, it’s so good! Eat in moderation (and…don’t eat the whole bag in one sitting!!) and you are good to go. This is a must try! 4.5 stars

If you could drizzle anything on popcorn, what would it be? Uhh peanut butter and jelly popcorn anyone?? (hints to you, Popcorn, Indiana!)

Peanut butter + pretzels + chocolate? Need there be another reason to  buy these? I didn’t think so. I also didn’t care that my wallet currently has 5 singles in it and I spent a few of those on these Dips. Oh salty sweet snacks, why must you tempt me so?

These little Dips were two pretzels, with peanut butter in the middle, then dipped in yummy  chocolate. I had to restrain myself in the car ride home not to eat them. (Lies- I totally ate 3 of them on the car ride home but I have to make it sound like I at least have some self control).

So much self control I actually ripped the bag down the middle. Ooooooops.

Anyway, after scoping out the ingredients (pretty good), looking at the nutrition facts (ehh…), buying these and finally getting them home, I had more and set myself to review them. Overall, these Dips were pretty good! And sweet! There was a milk chocolate tasting chocolate on the outside, with crunchy and fresh tasting pretzels on the inside.

Hmm. Problem. Where’s the peanut butter? I thought. The first bite was misleading- hardly any peanut butter flavor. But the second bite I tasted some. I do wish there was more, since I’m in love with peanut butter and will never turn it down : )

These were pretty much the epitome of a salty sweet snack. Smooth chocolate, crunchy salty pretzels and then a bit of peanut butter flavor. All together, they reminded me of a Reeses peanut butter cup in flavor, but with pretzel flavor as well. (Actually a Reeses peanut butter cup with pretzels in it sounds amazing!)

Overall, a yummy snack. However, very caloric, and high in saturated fat. 4 sandwiches have 4 grams of saturated fat and 150 calories, and these are HARD not to eat more than 4 of. In fact, the bag was gone in a day (not from me!!) but I left them on the kitchen table and later discovered an empty bag (that’s what happens when you live with hungry guys in the house!). So, given that and the peanut butter issue (lack there-of issue), these get 4 stars.

So, as IF we need any more sweet treats to eat during the holidays, I’m reviewing another sugary snack. But really,  HOW do you say no to a product like this?? Did I already eat cookies upon cookies upon cakes this holiday? YES. Did I already have cabinets stocked full of munchies? YES. Did I need another snack? NO!!. Should I have saved my money since it’s the holiday season and I need to spend it elsewhere? YES!

But did I buy it anyway? You bet. ; )

Popcorn, Indiana Drizzled Cinnamon Sugar Kettlecorn sounds absolutely amazing. And that’s because it is. Starting with the serving size. 1 cup. But is it really 1 cup? As you recall, from this review, the actual amount of popcorn I got was depressing.

This one? I GOT A WHOLE CUP! And I weighed it too. 28 grams.

I tried a few pieces. Mmm. Crunchy popcorn, with a white chocolate tasting drizzle on top and on most of the pieces. There was certainly a predominant cinnamon flavor, and the popcorn was mildly  sweet by itself, but very sweet for the pieces with the drizzle.

Eating it, it reminded me of a cinnamon bun. With the cinnamon flavor and the drizzle coming together like icing on a cinnabun. In other words, I could seriously eat this all day long. DANGEROUS! Especially during this season with all those buttery and sugary treats coming my way! Ahh!

Overall, this crunchy, sweet, cinnamony goodness gets 4.5 stars. Such a delicious treat, but it is rather high in sugar so I can’t eat too much since I am a Diabetic : ) (Although there was so not 6  servings in this! I think I only ate it like 3 times and I measured for the most part! Boo!)

What’s your favorite combination? Cinnamon and sugar definitely is one of mine!

*sigh* should have taken another picture. Threw out the bag. MY BAD!

I LOVE PIRATE’S BOOTY! Cheesy, puffy, salty delicious-ness. So I was in Whole Foods browsing the snack aisles, and saw Chocolate Pirate’s Booty. At first I was a bit taken aback/weirded out. Wait….cheesy and chocolatey? I was almost going to buy pita chips instead, but then I decided to give it a try. Why not? Maybe it would be delicious!

mmm. puffy.

I picked up a piece- probably one of the more chocolatey ones. It had almost a chocolate dusted film on it. I ate the piece, and could say it certainly had more of a cocoa flavor than chocolate. And to calm my cheesy-chocolate fears, there was no cheese flavor, but there was the flavor of the corn puff. (PHEW- imagine how gross it would have tasted if it was cheesy AND chocolatey? EW!)

I tried a few more. Crunchy, light and typical texture of Pirate’s Booty. It was mildly sweet, some had a bit of a vanilla flavor. They overall to me tasted like less sweet, bigger and more puffier pieces of Cocoa Puffs cereal. They weren’t bad, and the more I ate them, the more I think I liked them.

I look forward to trying them with peanut butter (oh c’mon, you saw that one coming!) and I also think they would be really good in a “trail mix” type, or paired up with a peanut butter cereal, like PB Cap’n Crunch! So overall, 3 stars. Not bad, but not ahhhhhmazing.

WHAT’S your favorite chocolate snack? (other than chocolate!!) Mine?? Chocolate Chocolate Chip Muffins =)

Oh. And I fail miserably at taking photos of the nutrition facts, I KNOW. Sorry =P

Popcorn, Indiana Apple Crisp Popcorn

Author: Healthnuttxo

Oh yea you know I FLIPPED out when I saw this. Well…I flipped out on the inside because I was in public and all, but on the inside I was screaming YES!!!!! THIS SOUNDS AWESOME!!!!!

Not pumpkin popcorn (ooh, how good does that sound?) but this sounds like just the right thing to bring on the fall spirit. APPLE CRISP! Fall is always about apple picking and pumpkin picking for me (sadly, I have yet to do both this year….) but at least I can enjoy the delicious apple flavors in treats like this! So, I bought it for 3 dollars (at Whole Foods!) which I thought was reasonably priced.

Here’s what some of it looked like

BUT, then I actually weighed it. Here’s what a serving is (insert sad face here)

woooomp. wooooomp.

And yes…that IS a sandwich sized bag.

But whatever. I always eat more than a serving anyway, even though a serving for this is really quite pathetic.

ANYWAY- I looked through the bag. HUGE pieces of popcorn, round and fluffy, along with some pieces being help together by a sticky, sugary syrup. I didn’t mind a bit as it was quite tasty, but there were about 3 HUGE “globs” of this popcorn/syrup mess. I also spotted some oats on the pieces of popcorn, which I guess contributes to the “apple crisp” part.

This popcorn was just really not what I expected. But I can’t say I hated it.

Upon first bite? I was puzzled. What does this taste like? I’ve had this before. I DEFINITELY ate this before!! And then.. This tastes EXACTLY like Quaker Apple Cinnamon Rice Cakes! And let me just say, as a kid, I was obsessed with that very flavor of rice cakes. Although, dont get me wrong, the popcorn was way sweeter. But the flavor was exactly the same.

Overall, I liked this snack. And that’s exactly what I would call it. It wasn’t popcorn to me- no annoying hulls or tiny pieces with popcorn kernels. Just round, fluffy and crunchy pieces with a sugary, apple cinnamon flavored syrup. It was an apple snack to me. 4 stars for this one, only because it’s super high in sugar (TWENTY grams!!), and since the portion size is small, I’d be eating at least double.

*What’s your favorite FALL dessert? I am obsessed with Candy apples. mmmm!

Popcorn, Indiana Bacon Ranch Popcorn

Author: Healthnuttxo

So this ones for you guys. Bacon seems like it’s such a big deal. As in a big deal as in people love it.

To me? Eh.

While I do appreciate a good slice of turkey bacon, I never liked bacon as a kid. Always left it on my plate on the diner, and scrunched my nose when I saw the grease my dad would pour into a glass jar after making breakfast. But that’s just me.

So when I saw this product, Popcorn, Indiana Bacon Ranch Popcorn I knew it would be a perfect thing to review. Plus, well, ok….it sounded pretty awesome. And I’m all for snacking. Guess what store I bought it at. No really, guess.

Why, WHOLE FOODS of course! 😉

Anyway, here’s what a bowl of the bacony-ranch goodness looked like.

*sniff* *sniff*….does someone smell bacon?

This popcorn was unbelievably delicious. It had a soft crunch to it, and a light residue on top of each piece of popcorn. I barely found any pieces that didn’t have a good coating on it, which was a positive. Nothing like a plain piece of popcorn to bring down the flavor party. Yea, I said flavor party.

Anyway, there was a salty taste, and a sharp white cheddar cheese flavor. And yes….I tasted bacon. There were also onion flavors as well, and it just really had a powerful and delicious ( insert ADDICTIVE) tastes. It reminded me of the Smoked Gouda popcorn I really loved as well.

This popcorn gets 4 1/2 stars. Why not 5 you ask? Well, it’s called Bacon Ranch popcorn, and I sort of missed the “ranch” element. It was more of a cheesy-bacon popcorn to me, with a bit of onion flavor.  It’s also a touch high in fat and sodium. Regardless, beyond good, and highly recommended.

What about YOU- fan of bacon? or no?  I like Veggie Bacon too! 🙂

365 Cheese Curls

Author: Healthnuttxo

I know how I’ve made comments in the past on how I do NOT like cheese. And well…

That’s still true.

But I don’t count cheese curls. Or cheese doodles. Or cheese puffs. Or whatever your preference on what you call your favorite salty, cheesy, crunchy snack.

Even though it may be made with cheese, CHEESE to me is the stuff that comes in the huge blocks that you have to slice yourself (or rather, have the deli slice for you). That kind of cheese turns me off. Especially goat cheese.

I’m sorry, cheese lovers, please dont hate me.

ANYWAY, how I fill the cheese void in my life is with cheesy snacks. Like these. The 365 Cheese Curls from Whole Foods.  Did I really NEED to buy these with the 8 million snacks at my house? No… But I’m me. I’m never satisfied. I always want more. So I  bought another snack. Oh well.

These were cheesy, and left a light residue on my fingers. Slightly salty, but in a good way. A way that makes me crave a Diet Dr. Pepper (or Dr. Zevia!) . They had a light crunch, with just the right amount of cheddar cheese flavor. Oh, and they were certainly addictive. Like, I’m done with my bowl but go back for a few more handfuls addictive.

These were delicious, if not perfect for cheese curls. I have had Cheetos in the past, and I think these taste almost identical. I would definitely buy these again! My only complaint, which I guess is just due to handling, was that there was a LOT of little pieces of curls, rather than “longer” curls. I mean pieces the size of the tip of my finger! But again, nothing major. Still delicious!  I also liked how these weren’t crazy high in calories, fat or sodium. 4 1/2 stars

If you had to give one up for the rest of your life, would it be cheesy snacks? or actual cheese? I think my choice is obvious 😉
