A Holiday Trick!

Author: Healthnuttxo

DISCLAIMER: The following post is for mature, adult audiences only.

The folks over at DickAtYourDoor allow you to anonymously send a “chocolate dick to anyone” as a joke. You may include a handwritten card to notify the person who the sender was as well.

I have reviewed this in the past, with an update to the company providing Holiday edition products. Once again…I was fooled. I got this festive, Santa covered box in the mail, shaped perfectly for a bracelet or necklace…

Nope.

*SIGH* fooled again!

I honestly cannot believe I was fooled AGAIN because I knew the chocolate was coming to my house soon, as I agreed to do a review on it. That being said, I cannot imagine anyone else being able to predict such a turn of events. The packaging it comes in the mail is also very discreet with no signs — I was wondering, what did I order??

The chocolate itself actually ain’t bad! A yummy dark chocolate, smooth in consistency and not too sweet. You can purchase one here in a variety of different decorative boxes.

Kafina Organic Energy Elixer

Author: Healthnuttxo

The 3 pm ‘energy crash’ seems to be something that plagues us all from time to time — long days in the office, mental stimulation, or perhaps your 8 am coffee wearing off, the fatigue that occurs around 3 pm is something that is hard to beat. What to do? Drink another cup of coffee and risk not being able to sleep that night? Or push through it?

In comes Kafina, an organic energy elixer that states it is a “revolutionary organic energy elixer for extraordinary physical energy, mental stamina and uplifted mood with zero chemicals or crash” (according to the box my product came in). You can drink the 1.0 fluid ounce bottles as is, or sip it in another beverage.

note that these statements are not evaluated by FDA, not recommended if pregnant or nursing or for children, and you are advised to consult your doctor prior to use

Each bottle is only 11 mg of caffeine and 10 calories. The ingredients include water, maple syrup, coffee, schisandra berry, fenugreek seed, cardamom.

While I like that the ingredients are minimal and the caffeine content isn’t super high, the taste is something I cannot get over. It is…rough. The taste is somewhat or a mix of bitter and sour, possible coffee like flavor. To ensure it wasn’t just me, I had a friend try it who cringed after she drank it. No noticeable energy boost was achieved, even after the whole bottle was consumed. This is a pass for me.

Oatsome Organic Oat Milk

Author: Healthnuttxo

By now, most people are aware of Cow’s milk alternatives including Soymilk and Almond milk, but have you ever heard of Oatmilk? Oatsome Oatmilk is another option, which especially appeals to those who are allergic to soy, nuts and dairy.

Some fun facts which I found out from the carton of Oatsome Oatmilk is that oats are one of the most sustainable grains and take 80% LESS water to grow than almonds do, and it takes over 1 gallon of water to grow ONE almond. That is definitely food for thought (pun intended) when choosing between which milks to drink to help benefit the environment!

You can bake with Oatmilk, drink it as is, & it can be used to make frothy lattes too. I used it mostly in my coffee. I brought it to work and a few of my co-workers who tried it really seemed to enjoy it. One co-worker heated it up in the microwave and used it in her coffee and found it absolutely delicious. The oatmilk itself is nutty, and not too sweet, with a thinner consistency than whole cows milk. It was a good addition to my hot coffee, adding a bit of extra flavor that wasn’t overwhelming.

1 cup of Oatmilk has 130 calories, 4 grams of fat, 21 grams of carbohydrate (13 g sugar) and 2 grams of protein. So while this milk alternative is definitely higher in carbs and lower in protein, I think it is worth adding to the rotation of milk-alternative choices in my fridge.

The very nice people over at EvoHemp sent me some new treats to try….Hemp Bars!

First off, okay, okay, what is hemp? Apparently, Hemp is part of the Cannabis sativa plant, but has higher concentrations of Cannabidiol (CBD) and lower concentrations of THC, therefore the psychotropic effects are eliminated or diminished (read more here, I am no expert!)

Given that CBD is all the new rage, I happily obliged to try these bars, with 15 mg of full spectrum hemp extract per serving Evo Hemp also partners with Alex White Plume to help bring agricultural jobs to Native American tribes growing hemp crops. Each bar has about 12 grams of protein, 5g of fiber and only 4 grams of sugar per serving.

I’ll be honest, they aren’t the most appealing. I found all 3 bars to be so rich, I felt I couldn’t have more than half the bar in one sitting. The base is cashew butter, which is definitely apparent upon first bite. It has a creamy yet dry consistency, that “crumbles” as you keep chewing it. Something I can similarly describe this is when you buy all natural nut butter and the oil separates, the bottom of jar with the nut butter without the oil – that creamy yet dry, “crumbly” consistency. Each bar has a teeny bit of a crunch, an occasional chip a presume, which doesn’t offer much flavor.

To be honest, the bars all tasted somewhat the same to me. An overpowering, predominant cashew flavor. The Cookie Dough one tasted nothing like cookie dough- but moreso a mix of a chocolate flavor mixed with a cashew flavor with occasional chocolate chip. The Brownie Chip was more on the chocolately side, but overall mute in flavor. The Mocha Chip had somewhat more of a coffee flavor, but my friend tried them and said it didn’t offer much flavor and she couldn’t even taste the coffee/ mocha flavor.

Overall, not a hit for me. I honestly could not stomach more than 1/2 a bar at once because they were so rich. While I like the health benefits of hemp, and appreciate a vegan / non dairy option, but these are not for me. 2 1/2 stars

Steeped Coffee

Author: Healthnuttxo

Like the idea of single serve coffee (aka K-cups) but don’t like the idea of all the plastic waste?

In comes Steeped Coffee.  Single serve coffee in a renewable and compostable bag. Seriously. It’s quite genius. While I love the flavor of a fresh pot of coffee, I work pretty early hours and definitely don’t always feel like brewing it from scratch at 5 am..But I’m not entirely PRO K-cup either, since it’s such a waste of plastic. Even the PACKAGE is compostable. Seriously.

According to the website the sealed edges from the bag eliminate glue and staples, and the ink used for printing is water based and without toxic chemicals. Amazing!

So how does Steeped work?

You simply place the bag in a cup and pour about 8 oz of hot water, dunk it for 15 seconds (or longer if you like it stronger) and leave it in your cup until desired taste. It resembles a giant tea bag, essentially.

cute little submarine!

They have flavors from French, light to extra dark roast and even decaf for those who enjoy the taste of coffee but maybe can’t have the caffeine (or like me, who already had 3 cups of coffee today but wants another and maybe shouldn’t have any more caffeine for the day!)

My taste for coffee has developed over the years. From liking very light roast to switching to cold brew has made it difficult for me to enjoy a cup of coffee without the punch. So, while some of the flavors here were a little too weak for me (light roast, French), I did enjoy the dark roast much more.  I thought it would be a good idea to let it brew, let is sit, and then add ice, but I found it really muted the flavor, so I would recommend these hot only.

Overall, I love the idea of this company and love the idea that it’s entirely compostable. THANK YOU Steeped! While I would stick to the darker roasts, that’s entirely a preference. However, I would recommend having it hot only, as iced kind of mutes the flavors (which makes sense as we are watering it down!) But definitely give them a try, the environment will thank you for it 🙂

Hint Water for Kids

Author: Healthnuttxo

Hint water for kids offers the same quality, 0 grams of sugar and no added sweeteners that traditional Hint water offers, but in super cute ‘juice’ box form! –(But really, how cute are the little fruit cartoons!)

Juice is a common drink amongst kids- however, while juice can provide some Vitamin C, it’s also loaded with sugar and a lot of empty calories. Plain water can be tough to get your kid to drink, especially if he or she is used to juice. A better alternative? Hint! These are water infused with fruit essence and have zero sugar, zero sweeteners. In fact, look at the nutrition label, and there’s a whole lot of…well…nothing!

They come in 4 delicious flavors.
Apple, Blackberry, Watermelon & Cherry. All 4 of them are quite delicious. While they certainly aren’t sweet like juice, they have this wonderful flavor of fresh fruit! The Apple I found to be my favorite, reminded me of granny smith slices in a bottle of water. All 4 flavors have a real, fresh fruit flavor, without harsh sweetness or fake flavors.

How did they do it? I don’t know but I am glad they did. You can get a case of 32 for ~$19 or ~$15 with subscribe and save. I hope I find these at the market because let’s be honest, sometimes we get tired or plain old water, but don’t want added chemicals/preservatives that diet drinks offer or sugar, and I found this to be the perfect little addition to keep me hydrated 🙂

Calbee Spudkins Fry Cuts

Author: Healthnuttxo

Calbee Spudkins are one of the newest snacks on the market, appealing to savory snack and chip lovers alike. They are cooked in a particular way that allows the same crispy-crunch as a traditional potato chip but with 25% less fat! The Fry cuts are made with Russet Potatoes and some natural seasonings.

First off, how cute is the bag!

I received Sour Cream and Onion, Yellow Cheddar and Honey Barbecue varieties to try. I tried the sour cream variety first – here’s what they look like:

Deceiving! They look like french fries but are super crunchy and crispy, without that oily residue that makes you feel like you have to wipe your hands on your pants (or some your pet — stop that!

The sour cream & onion were both addicting and delicious. They were my favorite of the 3, but my Dad tried them and found them a bit overpowering. I felt they demanded a drink alongside them, as they were a tad dry on the inside, but still so good. I am not a huge chip person, but I would definitely buy these in the future. (Conveniently they are available on Amazon…). They were flavorful without being salty and I noticed all 3 of these chips weren’t loaded with sodium which is great. — 4.5 stars

The Yellow Cheddar was my least favorite of the 3, while they were still yummy they had a relatively mild cheddar flavor that reminded me of a Cheez-it, but much more mild in flavor. — 3 1/2 stars

The Honey BBQ was a hit in my family. Definitely on the sweeter side, & I wish they had maybe a pinch more of salt BUT again, I love that they only had 105 mg of sodium per serving which is almost unheard of for chips. They are still plenty flavorful, but definitely lean more on the sweeter than “barbeque sauce” type flavor. –– 4 stars

Overall, LOVE these. We already looked into where we can buy them. Would 100% reccommend giving them a try- and I am not even a big fan of potato chips.

Meg Relief Pain Relief Oil

Author: Healthnuttxo

Achy, sore joints? (Honestly, does anyone not feel this way?). Before popping another Over the counter Tylenol or Advil, consider MegRelief Pain relief oil.

Source

MegRelief oil is made from Nutmeg, Rosemary, Peppermint and Sweet Almond oil, produced by Grenada Nut Company. This product was made from a nagging knee pain that pain medication and PT didn’t seem to fix. A natural remedy seemed to work, and thus, it was bottled and now available for us to use. According to the website, You are instructed to spray the affected joint and massage the oil in, and within 2 minutes, reap the benefits from the reduction of inflammation and pain.

Now. Given my Western medicine background (aka zero-no use of supplements), I was skeptical. However, I am aware of the long term (BAD) side effects of chronic NSAID or tylenol use, so I was open to trying this.

Conveniently, or I suppose NOT so conveniently, I had this nagging left elbow pain. Likely a combination of the gym, long drives and lots of typing that made me have some medical epicondylitis…aka some inflammation and pain on the inside of my elbow.

I sprayed 3 sprays on my elbow. That was my first mistake. This stuff is POTENT. I didn’t expect as much to come out as it did, so I felt like the whole day at work I stunk like a wooden chair, freshly cut (ever go furniture shopping? That woody smell!) . The nutmeg aroma is strong and long-lasting. I would advise one spray, and possibly do it at night so that way people aren’t trying to guess what the smell is. It’s not BAD, just potent.

Anyway, I used this for a few days, and to be honest, I did find the pain subsided. Was it the nutmeg oil? Maybe. Was it natural healing? Maybe. I can’t 100% say it was one or the other.

Overall, worth a try. It’s OTC and topical, so I like the idea of not ingesting something that I don’t know how will react with my body, etc. However, You will have to monitor for skin sensitivity. But remember, don’t spray too much!!! Unless you work in a nutmeg producing factory or something, then I suppose you’ll be fine with the smell 🙂

Sparkling Ice Mango Guava Sparkling Water

Author: Healthnuttxo

The mystery flavor is finally revealed from Sparkling Ice — and it is MANGO GUAVA!

After months and thousands of guesses from #WhatTheFlavorSweeps, Mango Guava is finally revealed. 0calories, 0 grams of sugar, caffeine free and enriched with Vitamin A, D, B6, Niacin, B12, Biotin and Panthothenic Acid per serving.

I was sent some of these to try from the company – I tried to guess the flavor and honestly, that’s almost what I was guessing! It is mildly carbonated (perfect), with a fruity, tropical flavor. I was trying to guess with every sip and I settled on a guava/mango flavor. To my surprise, I was actually right! It definitely reminds me of something fruity that I should be sipping on a nice, warm beach. Almost some hints of pineapple in there too. Super refreshing, and a perfect summer drink.

You can get this flavor for a limited time in stores while supplies last!

DISCLAIMER: I was given these bottles to try for free from the company. This is an unbiased post.

I will start this review by stating I do not wear a lot of makeup. Not that I don’t like it, but rather…I usually don’t have a clue with what I am doing. So I avoid it. However, MGS accessories offered me to try their cruelty-free Liquid Lipsticks, and I thought I would give them a try.

I got the lipsticks in 3 different colors– Saucy, Peachy, & Natural.

They are relatively easy to apply– a soft tip brush allows for easy application without smearing it below the vermillion border (aka your lip line). My complaint with other traditional lipsticks is I have thin lips and found it hard to apply without getting it on my skin — not the case with these.

The lipstick has a creamy consistency that dries rather quickly. I found it could feel a tiny bit dry, which is the nature of a Matte lipstick, and I wish it came with a gloss I could apply after or a clear lip balm.

The Peachy was…not my color. Too light for my complexion, and a little too, well, peachy in color for me. I found it to have a little too much of an orange hue. However, I am sure it would look great on other individuals, this one was just not for me.

The Natural was a gorgeous color. I wore it to work one day with very minimal eye makeup and got a lot of compliments on it. It stayed on well throughout the day and did not flake off. I did reapply 2-3 times (I eat and drink a lot!) but I was always worried it would flake off and it didn’t! However, it was definitely darker than I thought it would be, and the name decieved me a bit as “Natural”. I was expecting it to be more muted in color, but instead was a nice deep magenta almost.

Lastly, the Saucy, which was a really nice pop of color. A rich red, I think would pair well with a little black dress or something more for a night out in the town.

Overall, I like these! While the Peachy wasn’t my color, it doesn’t mean it isn’t YOUR color. What I loved also about these is the minimal ingredients (plant pigment, jojoba oil, vitamin E…etc) and they are CRUELTY Free! I have very sensitive skin and I did not have any reaction. A WIN for me.

4 stars
