Voke Chewable Superfood Tablets

Author: Healthnuttxo

Looking for a mid-afternoon pick me up? While coffee usually does it for me, sometimes I am In a rush and don’t want to guzzle an entire cup of coffee before a lift. (Squats + coffee? Not a great combination…).

Consider Voke Super-Food tablets. Each packet provides 2 tablets at 77 mg of caffeine each (roughly a small cup of coffee), and you are instructed to eat 1 in the morning and 1 in the mid-afternoon (1/2 a tablet for those who are sensitive!) The caffeine is extracted from Green Tea Leaves.

Voke promotes mental focus, upbeat mood and clear thinking with their Superfood blend of Organic Raw Guarana Seed (often seen in energy drinks for focus), Natural Red Beetroot, Organic Acerola Cherry, and Natural Green Tea Leaf Caffeine. Each tablet also provides 60 mg of Vitamin C (100% of Recommended daily value) and only 2 calories each with 0g of sugar. They are sweetened with Organic Erythritol, Xylitol, Monk Fruit Extract and Rebiana from Stevia Leaves.

Each tab is roughly the size of a nickel, with the diameter of 3 coins. They are easy to chew. The taste is…okay. When you first bite into it, it tastes pretty good with a slight medicinal taste, reminiscent of children’s chewable vitamins I used to take (maybe I still use them…who knows!). But then you are somewhat overwhelmed with this tart and bitter flavor. I think it’s good on one hand to not taste *amazing*, as people may be inclined to take more than recommended (or if kids get their hands on them, may eat them which is not okay under the age of 12 (as per Voke).  On the other hand, they are super tart, and I just wish they would be slightly more palatable.  I only ate half the first time I tried it, and I wasn’t thrilled about trying them again.

That being said, taste aside, I did have a pretty good workout. I ate the tablet 30-45 minutes prior to a lift after a long day at work when I was feeling like I was dragging. I felt like I had an extra boost and pep during my workout, and I liked that I didn’t have to get another cup of coffee. I did have a slight bit of anxiety, but this is rather common for me when I use supplements with caffeine in them (or even when I drink too much coffee).

Overall, these are OK. If you can handle the tartness, they are a good option, especially for those who workout early on an empty stomach or cannot drink coffee and looking for another option besides the 4$ overly caffeinated energy drinks. I like that the ingredient list is relatively pure and the supplement is low in sugar.

As per Voke, do not use the tablets if you are pregnant, under the age of 12, or have a heart condition. You are also instructed to NOT exceed 5 tablets it 24 hours.

3.5 stars

Looking for an April Fools Trick?

Author: Healthnuttxo

WARNING: For adult, mature audiences only!

If you are looking for a funny gift for Easter or April Fools day (that also donates to a good cause…) look no further! Dick At Your Door allows you to “send a chocolate dick to anyone” * ANONYMOUSLY* AND $1 from every order is also donated to the American Cancer Society for Prostate Cancer Research. Awesome!

To be perfectly honest, I agreed to reviewing this product and was totally fooled LOL. So that goes to show that they did a pretty good job…because I literally knew it was coming and still was fooled. I got home and opened this package and saw a pretty box that looked like this.

Inconspicuous….

How pretty right?
Here I am, thinking, oh wow who got me something? Belated birthday gift? Is it a bracelet? Jewelry?

Nope…

UNREAL LOL!

Absolutely hilarious, I was actually fooled. I think this is a great April Fools joke. However, as the website states as a disclaimer, “Products on this site are intended only as gag gifts for adults. These products are intended to generate a laugh and are not to be sent with malicious intent. If you have any doubt that sending a product from this site could potentially harm someone, do not place an order. It is your responsibility to use this site as it was intended, as a joke.”

Dietary Supplements – we’ve all tried and bought a few from here and there. While the FDA does not regulate supplements, you CAN do your best to buy from reputable companies who take pride in what they sell. Synergy Company sent me some of their Organic Dietary supplements from the Pure Synergy line. You can view all their supplements here

I was sent: Super Pure Beta 1,3 Glucan Algae Extract, Pure Radiance C 100% Natural Vitamin C from Wildcrafted Berries, SuperPure Echinacea, Rapid Rescue and Enzyme Powder full spectrum Digestive support. Most of the supplements are Organic and Kosher (but always double check your label!)

So let’s get started!

Super Pure Beta 1,3 Glucan Algae Extract:
-each capsule is vegetarian and contains 500 mg of Beta 1,3 Glucan
-okay great, WHAT IS BETA GLUCAN??
-according to the website, it is found in cell walls of mushrooms, yeast and algae, and has been linked to immune-enhancing benefits, as well as promote healthy stress responses and healthy inflammation responses
-unfortunately, my research of Beta 1,3 Glucan is limited. I wish there was a paper to support the statements of the supplement (I’m a science gal). However, I do like that this product is made without harsh chemicals, GMO free, dairy free, yeast free, and gluten free.

Pure Radiance C 100% Natural Vitamin C from Wildcrafted Berries:
–just 1/4 of a tsp of this powdered supplement provides 200% of your RDA of Vitamin C
-organic and kosher
-I added this with my iced tea, and it added just a very slight berry flavor to my drink. I’m sure you could also mix with water, but I preferred it as a little boost with my tea. I had no side effects, and did not get sick the entire month I used the product. Coincidence? Maybe. But maybe not, as we do know Vitamin C’s role in immune health and as a co-factor in many enzymatic reactions in the body.

SuperPure Echinacea & Rapid Rescue
-You see echinacea all the time in cough and cold products — but why? It is believed to help “jump start” your immune response, according to the Synergy Company
-You can take the Echinacea or the Rapid Rescue at the first sign of a cold or when you’re not quite feeling yourself (naturally, any fever or signs of a more serious illness, please see your doctor!)
-I won’t lie, I took the Rapid Rescue at the first signs of a cold (during one of my Pediatric rotations…lots of sick kids!), and felt that the cold was expedited to about 3-4 days instead of my usual that lingers for 5-6 days.
-Of NOTE: I did feel particularly anxious when I took the Rapid Rescue. I cannot comment if that was correlated with the supplement, or extraneous factors. But, I figured I would state it as such.

ENZYME POWDER: Full Spectrum Enzyme Support

-1 pill provides a TON of digestive enzymes.
-For Carbohydrate digestion: amylase, glucoamylase, lactase (for lactose), maltase, invertase
-For Fat digestion: lipase
For Protein Digestion: bromelain and papain, protease, peptidase, acid protease, serrapeptase, nattokinase
-Plant Fibers: cellulase, hemicellulase, alpha-galactosidase, xylanase, pectinase, phytase, beta glucanase
-& lastly, Digestive “support blend” which includes things such as fennel, red algae trace mineral complex, ginger and tumeric
-I think this would be a good supplement for someone who suffers from indigestion or simple heartburn. Remember, this is not medical advice, and you should ALWAYS see a doctor or PA for medical advice, especially if you have something like ongoing indigestion, etc.

Overall, I like this company, and I feel as if their products are pure. Worth a try!

Let me know if you have tried any of these before and which are your favorites.

Dietary Supplements can be tricky. If you are not aware, * MOST * are NOT FDA regulated – hence, do we ever really know what is in a dietary supplement?

Well, to solve this problem, Dr. Sreek Cherukuri established SmartCeuticals, which are produced in a NSF certified facility. This is to ensure what is in your supplement is actually what the bottle says it has!

Dr. Sreek Cherukuri’s company established Boscumin, which is a combination of tumeric and Boswellia. This product is supposed to be 29x more effective than standard tumeric and boswellia, as it is bound to fat solulble lecithin for increased absorption.

According to the email I received from the company, they reported a study that found some other tumeric products were synthetic, and made from petroleum. (yuck!!)

Tumeric and Boswellia are natural herbs aimed at reducing inflammation and helping ease joint pain.

These pills are GMO free, dairy, egg, gluten soy, wheat, sugar, salt, yeast, preservative, artificial flavor and fragrance free. They are vegan and gluten free as well.

Here is a picture of the label:

So a bit of feedback, the pills are decently big, and you are instructed to take 2 per day. I am not a *huge* fan of the label looking like a prescription bottle. I understand it is promoting “medicinal effects” per se, but it is not an FDA regulated medicine or prescription, so I’m not a huge fan of the fact the bottle looks as such.

HOWEVER, If you are interested in learning more, please check out the website here. You can use my promo code, LISA, as well!

This is definitely something new for me- vitamin infused toothpaste? Cool!

Vitaminpaste is the first multivitamin and mineraltoothpaste. According to the fact sheet they sent me, both varieties:

  • developed by Dentist Dr. Bruce Golden
  • Both are fluoride free, thus eliminating the risk of dental and skeletal fluorosis from fluoride toothpaste ingestion
  • This toothpaste contains ingredients that are safe to ingest
  • It is sweetened with Xylitol, which helps reduce risk of tooth decay

You are instructed to use 1 inch strip of toothpaste, brush for 2 minutes (1 minute for Mint), rinse and swallow normally and use this 3 times per day

The Mint Variety…

  • Infused with Vitamin D, E, B6, Niacin,Pantothenic Acid, Zinc, Selenium and Manganese
  • Is gluten free
  • Not tested on animals
  • Contains Sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Contains parabens to help keep toothpastebacteria free
  • Freshens breath, whitens teeth

The Vitamin Paste for Kids (Bubblegum flavor)—for kids aged 4+

  • Does NOTcontain sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Provides 50% RDA of Vitamin D, E, B3, B5, B6when used as directed (aged 4-13)
  • No parabensor preservatives
  • Contains calcium
  • Not tested on animals
  • Helps freshen breath and whiten teeth

So how did it taste?
Pretty good. The mint variety was more sweet than minty, with predominant Xylitol flavor. I like the mint, especially for kids, as it wasn’t harsh in flavor or burned when I used it (some mint toothpaste stings!). That being said, the very mild flavor made me feel like I wasn’t super “refreshed” after  brushing.

The Bubblegum flavor was also mild, but still pretty good. I liked that both varieties weren’t colored, and the bubblegum flavor was white (rather than dyed with pink).

Overall, I like the idea of these, especially for kids who won’t take a multivitamin with their meals or may be lacking some vitamins/minerals. I personally believe Fluoride plays a role in proper teeth and bone development, as well as anti-cavity effects, but I also like the fact these are fluoride free, as excess (such as consuming toothpaste) can be dangerous, and can be seen in the pediatric population. The Xylitol takes the place of Fluoride to reduce plaque, and I am wondering what the role of anti-cavity Xylitol has. My only other complaint was that this toothpaste did not really leave me feeling “refreshed” after brushing. My teeth felt clean, but the “just brushed” feeling dissipated rather quickly. However, I did not experience any burning or irritation that some of the strong minty toothpastes can cause.

SO for me, these get a solid 4.

Sparkling Ice had a promotion the past few months with a “Mystery Fruit Flavor” with #WhatTheFlavorSweeps, in which the brand has finally revealed the flavor is… PASSIONFRUIT PUNCH!

This drink is naturally flavored sparking water, with antioxidants, vitamins and ZERO sugar! Caffeine free, with zeros across the board for calories, carbs, sodium and sugar. It has some Vitamin A, Niacin, B12, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin D, B6, and Biotin.  Sparking Ice has 16 other flavors, which are all lightly carbonated, low in sugar and calories, and naturally flavored. You can read more about them here.

So how does it taste?

Delicious! I made sure to chill it in the fridge for a few hours to get the full experience.

Refreshing, crisp and light in flavor. Lightly carbonated, which I actually prefer, because I hate when a drink is SO fizzy that it “hurts” a bit drinking, and almost causes some indigestion.

It was lightly fruity, almost tasted like a cross between peach, pineapple and berry flavors. AKA the perfect summer drink! (I also think this would be great mixer for alcoholic beverages, for those of you who want a low calorie treat AND are of the legal age 🙂 )

Make sure to give this new flavor a try if you see it in store!

What is BOKKSU? Bokksu was created by Danny Taing, who lived in Japan for many years and then upon moving to NYC, found he could no longer enjoy his favorite Japanese snacks. Bokksu was then inspired, and it is a subscription box service delivering snacks directly from Japan. Each month has a theme and they are hand picked to match the theme. This month is April Blossom, which caters to a spring theme with Japanese plum, flower and strawberry flavors.

SAKURA LOVE TEA

  • this one has a delicious cherry aroma, I tried it hot after steeping for 4 minutes
  • this one was light and sweet, with a cherry undertone
  • Did not have to add sugar or milk, etc. to enjoy this tea
  • loved the light and refreshing and pure flavor

SAKURA CHOCOLATE CREPE

  • this treat is super tiny (about the size of my index finger) and is a rolled up crepe in floral flavored chocolate
  • it is light and has a wafer like crunch to it
  • sweet but not too sweet, almost tastes like a less sweet white chocolate with a hint of cherry or some sort of floral undertone
  • I really liked it! Perfect little treat when you are craving something sweet but definitely not too sugary

BAKED CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY

  • this is a “fluffy and rich chocolate” with strawberry bits that is BAKED!
  • it’s very interesting, melt in your mouth yet “fluffy”
  • has a white chocolate taste to it, with prominent strawberry flavor
  • has a freeze dried type of feel to it
  • I like it! It’s a bit rich, but I do like it

SAKURA RUSK

  • this is a baguette  baked twice with Sakura butter with salted sakura petals baked in on top!
  • This one was yummy, kind of like a butter biscuit but not SUPER buttery, just the right amount, with some sugar crystals on top, and just a hint of a floral/sweet flavor
  • it was light and crunchy, and fresh
  • I liked it as a little pick me up snack, or after dinner when you want a little sweet treat

WHITE STRAWBERRY

  • a freeze dried strawberry soaked in white chocolate
  • I really liked this! It was like eating a piece of white chocolate with bits of strawberry flavor in it, but the strawberry tartness that can sometimes be present with freeze dried fruits is mellowed out by the white chocolate.
  • also, not super sweet
  • a great after meal treat 🙂

POCKY

  • easily my favorite in the box, these are strawberry cheesecake coating on a short chocolate stick
  • very rich, only need one or two at a time
  • sweet, creamy, with the perfect little mild chocolate crunch at the end

SUPPA MUCHO STICKS SOUR PLUM

  • crispy potato sticks seasoned with sour plum
  • honestly…thought these would be weird…loved them. Salty, sweet, tangy, all in one
  • I think if you like salt and vinegar chips, these would be a hit for you, but with a bit of a plum taste and just the slightest hint of floral

SPRING RICE CRACKERS

  • assorted rice cracker flavors in plum, matcha, purple sweet potato, shrimp, turmeric, salt, chili pepper and soy sauce
  • crispy and light
  • red ones are sour for sure, almost has a corn chip flavor
  • green one reminds me of corn pops cereal!

SAKURA SHRIMP KAMIMOCHI

  • honestly for this one… I just personally can’t do it. It smells way too fishy for me. I took a nibble and it was an immediate pass for me. I’m sure some people may love it, but shrimp flavored crackers are not for me.

UMA SABLE

  • this was pretty good!
  • like a butter/shortbread cookie with some sweet plum flavor in it
  • mildly sweet and rich
  • flavors went well with each other

HAND BAKED BUTTER SENBEI

  • a butter rice cracker
  • this one was a pass for me and my mom
  • very buttery, oily texture, dense
  • has a very off taste that I couldn’t put my hands on

Overall, I like this idea! I would love a subscription like this every month to try new treats. Obviously this box in particular had some hits and some misses for me, but I love the fact it incorporates a completely different culture and taste than snacks that I am used to, and is actually authentic! Great idea, and overall a great service.

One could argue that a sore throat is among one of the worst symptoms of a cold (right next to a stuffy nose), and with winter here (almost), the colds are coming!!!

Well, they are already here. You hear the coughs in the background, on the subway, in the gym, in the classroom. It’s inevitable you will get a cold, unless you have some secret in which, please let a girl know 🙂

Chloraseptic has provided me with 2 sore throat relief products, The Fast Acting Lozenges, and the Sore Throat plus Coating Protection Max Strength relief spray.

The Fast Acting Lozenges are in wild berry flavor, and have a soothing liquid center. They contain benzocaine and menthol as means to “numb” and soothe the throat as well as oral mucosa/pathways. They are of a decent size, and you have to suck on the lozenge a decent amount of time before the liquid center opens up and releases. The lozenges are mild in flavor, and not overly mentholated. As you picked up from my last post, I can’t stand the taste of menthol! However, these are tolerable for the menthol, and they do really help.

I got a minor cold a week ago and used these every couple of hours to soothe that annoying, scratchiness. The effect lasts a bit after finishing the drop as well. The liquid center is like a menthol burst, and has even stronger potency.

The Sore Throat spray however, is NOT my thing. I found it awkward to put in my mouth and try to spray down my throat, and I missed several times, just getting the back of my tongue. The taste is also very chemical like. It does leave a coating and prevents some of the soreness, but to me I wouldn’t buy this in the future because I just don’t enjoy this type of product. It contains Phenol and glycerin (as a coating) as active ingredients. Effective? yes. Easy to use? Eh.  To be honest it depends on your preference. And, with most things, DO NOT SHARE THIS— germs!

Overall, I like that Chloraseptic has a few options for sore throat relief. I way prefer the drops over the spray, and would buy those in the future for the next time I have a nasty cold (which we all know will happen). The spray is really dependent on if you like that sort of “numbing” and can apply it easily, but not my cup of tea.
