I got some samples to try for free from Thin Slim Foods! This company makes desserts, breads, bagels and more that are lower in calories and carbs than traditional fare. I was lucky enough to get a loaf of the Honey and Plain bread, as well as 2 of the brownies to try.

I was definitely intrigued by these foods. Being a Diabetic, I try to keep my carbohydrates on the lower side, as it allows for better blood sugar control (carbs= the devil for me sometimes!). Don’t get me wrong, I DO miss my breads, bagels, etc. so it is nice to hear of companies that make products that are lower in carbs and calories!

First things first…the brownie! I haven’t had a full brownie in ages. I bake a lot, but seldom eat what I bake- and moreso taste it so make sure it is good, and give it away for others to enjoy.

The brownie is 45 calories, 20 carbohydrates (8 of which is fiber), 0 grams of sugar, 10 sugar alcohols, and 6 grams of protein. It’s a nice thick sized brownie…and the whole thing 45 calories? I was skeptical.

I bit into it. It was definitely a cakey brownie, with a strong cocoa powder flavor. It was on the dry side, and a little pasty. It had a sweetness to it- but you could tell it wasn’t from sugar, but rather from a non caloric sweetener. Being a diabetic, I can spot that flavor miles away! I like it, and sort of am forced to like it since I can’t eat sugar, but it’s definitely not for everyone. The brownie is lackluster, but it is chocolately. I think it needs a smear of peanut butter or some sugar free chocolate chips thrown in there to be more appetizing. 2  stars.

Next up, the Honey Bread.

As you can see…this bread is tiny! Each piece is a little smaller than the size of my hand. I decided to make an egg white and cheese sandwich with it. So I toasted the bread from frozen, put some brummel and brown butter on it, and made a sammy!
The bread is a bit bland, but versatile since you can pretty much use it for any type of sandwich or spread. It had a nice crunch and was still fluffy after toasting. It tasted almost like a rye bread, but less dense. It had a very very TEENY flavor of honey…nothing noticeable for sure. I had a very small blood sugar spike, about 10 mg/dL, but I also have to factor in the fact I had eggs and cheese which will contribute to something.
Considering this is a low carb bread…and I’ve had nasty ones before…this one is really good. Small, but good. I would buy it again. 3 1/2 stars

1 slice is 50 calories, 2 grams of fat, 8 grams of carbs (7 of which are fiber), 0 grams of sugar, and 7 grams of protein.

Lastly, the Plain Bread.

To be fair, I made the same sandwich.

This bread is pretty much identical to the Honey one, but very very slightly less sweet. It had more of a Rye Bread flavor, but generally was still a bland bread. It was still good for the sandwich, but lacked flavor. I enjoyed the Honey one more because even though the Honey flavor was minimal, it was still noticeable. 3 stars

Overall, I think this company has some good stuff. I would love to try more in the near future, and am happy to report little to no blood sugar spikes. I also like the added protein in these products. Helps me hit my daily quotas!

Trader Joe’s Spiced Apple Bread Mix

I’m all about homemade baking. I’d much rather bake chocolate chip cookies from scratch than buy the prepared versions. Something about the flavor, and the, ahem, love, that goes along with a homemade cookie. However, every now and then, a prepared version suffices. I spotted Trader Joe’s Spiced Apple Bread Mix at the store and couldn’t resist. Being the apple and carb fanatic I am (oh carbs…how I love thee) I figured this would be beyond delicious 🙂

So, I preheated the oven and got mixing.

Here’s the goods! It needed 2 eggs, milk (I used skim), butter, and the mix.

Finished product. Everything is better with powdered sugar…. 😉

So….looks pretty. How’s it taste?

It was actually pretty good! It has a very deep flavor, and I could really taste the spices. All spice and cinnamon were the most predominant flavors, and there was almost a bit of a caramel flavor as well. The bread really reminded me of pumpkin too, for the dark color and the spiced flavor. The bread was sweet, but not over the top, so I think it’s acceptable to put the powdered sugar on for some added sweetness after I was suggested to do so.

It was soft and fluffy, with crispier edges, with dried apple pieces for added texture. I didn’t think it was super apple-y in flavor, but it still was an enjoyable bread. I think I’ll eat it again with a smear of peanut butter or butter after warming it up in the toaster oven.

It also lacked fiber and was a bit high in sugar, so this bread gets a total rating of 4 stars. Trader Joe’s really never disappoints me with their products, and I hope they never do!!

Mmmm carbs. How could anyone not like carbohydrate-rich foods? I know I may not be a “pasta person”, but I do love bread!

For today’s review, it’s the Fig, Fennel & Flax Manna Bread from Manna Organics. I have tried a few of them in the past, and thought they were okay, but I’m always up for trying new flavors. I was provided this loaf from Manna Organics to try for free as well.

I opened up the package and saw a loaf covered in seeds- pumpkin, sunflower, poppy seeds and sesame seeds. Oddly enough, I didn’t see any flax seeds or figs (go figure). Anyway- I cut off a slice and divided it into 3. I was going to try it 3 ways..

Cold and plain- eaten this way, the bread was rather dry, bland, and had a slight poppyseed and rye bread flavor.

Then, I warmed up a piece in the microwave- this way was a bit better, as some of the fig flavor came out and made it lightly sweet, and I tasted more of the seeds as well.

The best method of the 3, was warming it up and putting a little bit of apple butter on it. Delicious! It was chewy and soft, and complemented the sweetness of the apple butter very well.

Overall, I’m giving it 3 stars. It was really only good with the apple butter on it, and I wish it had a stronger fig flavor. One thing I did like was that I didn’t detect much flaxseed flavor, a flavor I really don’t like as I  think it can taste fishy sometimes. But this bread has a lot to offer. It’s organic, and according to the package, is “Free from Added Sweeteners, Salt, Yeast or Oil“. A versatile bread!

1 2 oz. slice is 120 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 26 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber, 8 grams of sugar, 4 grams of protein.

Manna Organics Whole Rye Manna Bread

Along with the Carrot Raisin and Cinnamon Date bread I was sent from Manna Organics, they also gave me the Whole Rye. I’m not a huge rye bread eater, but I do remember when I was younger, I used to always eat bakery fresh rye bread during Thanksgiving with homemade mashed potatoes and a little bit of butter. Delicious!

So, I put this one in the freezer when I got it originally, and then thawed it in the refrigerator. Then I opened up the rye bread and noticed a good sized, brown loaf. The bottom of it was almost sort of wet and the top was a bit cakey and dry. I’m not sure if that was because I froze it and then defrosted it, or if it always comes like that.

Anyway- I cut a slice and took a bite. It has a very grainy and nutty texture, and there were pieces that almost looked like the brown popcorn kernels once they pieces are popped (Those little light brown flakes I guess I would call them?) To my surprise, it was still pretty soft. It was a dense and chewy bread, and not dry at all! A really good rye flavor, but I did miss the salt : ( It was a tad bit bland without it, so I decided to sprinkle just a little bit on top- Voila! Just the way I like it.

Overall, I’m giving this 3 1/2 stars. It’s organic, has 5 grams of fiber per 56 gram serving, and the ingredients rock- only “sprouted organic rye kernels, filtered water”. TWO INGREDIENTS? Nice. I was surprised to see 7 grams of sugar come from just sprouted rye kernels and water.. who knew?

2 oz. is 150 calories, 0 grams of fat, 32 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber, 7 grams of sugar, and 6 grams of protein.
