I got a free bag of the Limited Edition CinnamonSugar Pita Chips by Bearitos. These are non-GMO verified, which is always a plus. I don’t necessarily go out of my way to get non-GMO foods, but seeing a product non-GMO verified is definitely a positive!

I have a love hate with Pita chips. Love them, hate the calories and carbs. A serving size is usually like 7 chips from most brands that I’ve seen, because Pita Chips are so dense and thick. Who can only eat 7?!?!

Anyway, I was excited to try these. I was informed there is also a chocolate flavor that they make. I was sent the cinnamon sugar flavor. Here’s what they look like

As you can see, they have some seasoning on them but do not look drenched in cinnamon or sugar, which I’ll admit, I was already a bit disappointed. BUT, I tried these with an open mind.

Unfortunately, they were not as good as I hoped. They were a solid, crunchy chip, just as a pita chip should. However they were really bland. There was not a lot of cinnamon nor sugar flavor, and I had a predominant flavor of just a bland pita chip. I tried a couple chips, even some that looked like they had more coating than the others, and still to no avail.

The overall flavor was way too mild for me. If mild, and by mild I mean SUPER mild, is your thing, you might like these. I checked the sugar content of the chips, and it only had 1 gram of sugar. I suppose this is a plus, but I probably wouldn’t buy these if I saw these in store. Too bland, and not worth it if I wanted a sweet treat.  I did like the crunch these chips provided, but they just didn’t do it for me. I do NOT eat a lot of sugar (I am a Diabetic), so it’s not even as if I am used to a high exposure of sugary foods- these just barely had any flavor besides wheat.

2  stars

So, as IF we need any more sweet treats to eat during the holidays, I’m reviewing another sugary snack. But really,  HOW do you say no to a product like this?? Did I already eat cookies upon cookies upon cakes this holiday? YES. Did I already have cabinets stocked full of munchies? YES. Did I need another snack? NO!!. Should I have saved my money since it’s the holiday season and I need to spend it elsewhere? YES!

But did I buy it anyway? You bet. ; )

Popcorn, Indiana Drizzled Cinnamon Sugar Kettlecorn sounds absolutely amazing. And that’s because it is. Starting with the serving size. 1 cup. But is it really 1 cup? As you recall, from this review, the actual amount of popcorn I got was depressing.

This one? I GOT A WHOLE CUP! And I weighed it too. 28 grams.

I tried a few pieces. Mmm. Crunchy popcorn, with a white chocolate tasting drizzle on top and on most of the pieces. There was certainly a predominant cinnamon flavor, and the popcorn was mildly  sweet by itself, but very sweet for the pieces with the drizzle.

Eating it, it reminded me of a cinnamon bun. With the cinnamon flavor and the drizzle coming together like icing on a cinnabun. In other words, I could seriously eat this all day long. DANGEROUS! Especially during this season with all those buttery and sugary treats coming my way! Ahh!

Overall, this crunchy, sweet, cinnamony goodness gets 4.5 stars. Such a delicious treat, but it is rather high in sugar so I can’t eat too much since I am a Diabetic : ) (Although there was so not 6  servings in this! I think I only ate it like 3 times and I measured for the most part! Boo!)

What’s your favorite combination? Cinnamon and sugar definitely is one of mine!

*sigh* should have taken another picture. Threw out the bag. MY BAD!

Simple Food Inc. Soy Nut Butters

Author: Healthnuttxo

Before you click off the page and say “ewww. SOY nut butter? I’ll stick to PEANUT butter” HEAR ME OUT!

I, too, was one of those. I would stick up my nose to anything soy. I tried soy nuts once and HATED them. So how could I like Tofu? Soy beans? Edamame? But (of course) I tried them, and I LOVE THEM ALL! Tofu is so versatile, soy milk rocks, and edamame might as well be the healthiest “junk food tasting” food out there. So, I figured, if I like these other soy products, why not try Soynut Butter?

Here is where Simple Foods Inc. comes in. They make organic soynut butters made in a tree-nut and peanut free environment.  The company makes 5 flavors, No Sugar-No Salt, Sea Salted, Cinnamon Sugar, Slightly Sweet, and Chocolate.  Simple Foods Inc. was nice enough to send me the Cinnamon Sugar, Slightly Sweet and Chocolate varieties.

Of course I was skeptical at first. But I told myself to give it a shot. It turned out that I liked these soy nut butters a lot. There was really no separation of oil, like most natural nut butters, and after a day in the fridge, they all had a very thick and creamy texture. Perfect for out of the jar, or on some bread or crackers. Here’s the breakdown of each…

Chocolate- can we say, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in a jar? That was the EXACT thing I thought of upon opening and tasting this flavor. Literally, this one is SO delicious, and even reminded me of chocolate frosting. It had a sweet and almost buttery taste to it as well, with a strong cocoa and a mild soynut flavor. I reccommend this flavor if you don’t like the taste of soynuts, because you can’t tell at ALL.

Slightly Sweet- yum. This one, at first I will admit, I wasn’t ccrazy about. But, it really grew on me. To the point where I was craving it and would walk by the fridge and just take a little taste here and there (okay, more like a little spoonful… 😀 ). It has a slightly salty taste to it, and almost had a walnut flavor to it. It’s creamy as well, and has just a tang of sweetness to it. It was really good on my double chocolate chip muffin 🙂

Cinnamon Sugar– ooh. I liked this one too. At first, all you taste is the cinnamon. Then, as you let it move around in your mouth a little, you taste the sweetness and a little bit of soy. It’s really good, and was really delicious on whole wheat toast. It wans’t too sweet, and it’s more “cinnamon-y” than “sugar-y”. As with the others, it’s perfect straight out of the jar 🙂

Overall, these get 4 1/2 stars. I really enjoyed them, and was pretty surprised at how well they tasted, given the fact that I really don’t care for plain ol’ soy nuts. They are a really good source of protein, at 10 grams per serving, and provide some healthy fats and fiber. The only thing bring it down 1/2 of a star from 5 is that there is refined sugar, and the sugar content is actually quite high in the chocolate variety (8 grams out of the 10 carbohydrates). Otherwise, these ROCK!

Chocolate- 1 serving is 190 calories, 12 grams of fat, 10 carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, and 10 grams of protein.

Organic dry roasted soybeans, organic sunflower oil, organic powdered sugar ( organic cane juice, organic corn starch), organic dutch cocoa, organic palm stearin,  organic vanilla powder, sea salt.

Slightly Sweet- 1 serving is 200 calories, 16 grams of fat, 8 carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, and 10 grams of protein.

Newman's Own Organic Soy Crisps

Author: healthnuttxo

soycrisps

So normally in the afternoon i have a yogurt (ahem, Stonyfield or Wallaby Organic. yum!) for a snack with something else that’s little, a handful of cereal, a cookie, etc. But today (after a grueling workout at the gym this morning) I was RAVENOUS! So i thought i needed something a bit more substantial than my normal yogurt.

So, i decided to give Newman’s Own Organic Soy Crisps a try. Okay now before you say EW, SOY IS GROSS, don’t even think about it. Soy crisps taste pretty much like rice cakes-but are healthier and have more satiety packed with them due to the soy protein and isolflavins that soy provides.

I have three of Newman’s flavors (which they so generously donated!), Cinnamon Sugar, White Cheddar and Barbeque. They also come in a lightly salted flavor.

Cinnamon Sugar-I opened up the bag and popped one in my mouth-delicious! They were sweet, crunchy, “cinnamonny” (if that’s a word!), in otherwords- SO GOOD! I got one soy crisp out the bowl i poured that had extra cinnamon and dehydrated cane juice on it… i was a happy camper 😉

Barbeque-tastes just like barbeque chips! My mom even asked for more after i let her try a few (which of course i declined her- get your own bag! 😉 ) There is a subtle sweetness to the BBQ flavor, but you can  taste garlic and tomato flavors as well. These were good!

White Cheddar- just the right amount of seasoning. Not too heavy, not too light. They are cheesy too, and a tad salty. You will need some water with these!!

These soy crisps are definitely a lot healthier than other chips or pretzels that people grab for a snack in the afternoon. In 1 oz. (which is about a small bowlful- a good sized amount), there are 110-120 calories, 2.5-4 grams of fat, 13-15 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, and 7-9 grams of protein. Needless to say i was definitely satisfied after eating these-they quenched my hunger quite nicely. The Cinnamon Sugar Flavor also hit the spot for the fat/sugar laden craving i have been having for Auntie Anne’s Cinnamon Sugar Hot Pretzels lately in a much healthier way. I’m going to be buying these quite often!
