Clif Bar Peppermint Stick Energy Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

Officially holiday season! Christmas and Hanukkah are approaching quick! So in spirit, a holiday themed treat.

Clif Bar sent me their Peppermint Stick Clif Bar. I happen to love these energy bars, so I was excited!

The bar was standard in terms of texture for a Clif Bar. Chewy and dense, soft and had a few oats scrambled around. was sort of fruity minty. Like bubble-mint toothpaste in a way. You know when it’s slighty sweet like bubblegum but also minty. At first I took a bite and it had that standard Clif bar taste, slightly fruity/date flavor, but then in comes a peppermint flavor. Not super strong, but you definitely can taste it. In fact if you can’t taste it, you might need to get your taste buds evaluated ; )

But then some bites were different. Another bite had a very mild mint flavor and a bit of a white chocolate flavor. Hmm. I also saw streaks of red throughout the bar, not BIG streaks, but a mild red. I searched the ingredient list and saw peppermint candy, which not only explained the red but also the stronger peppermint flavors in some bites.

I normally go for energy bars early in the morning, when it’s too early for a full breakfast/I want to work out early. However, I took one bite of this and couldn’t do it. It was too strong for a morning tummy/ taste buds to handle (or at least mine anyway) so I ended up eating it later on in the day.

I got this bar for free, but I can’t say I would buy it again. I wasn’t really a fan, it was just ok. I like that it was seasonal and wintry with the peppermint, and I think it’s great if you really like peppermint. However, the only time I like minty things is when I brush my teeth or chew a piece of gum. This didn’t really work for me.

The nutrition facts seem pretty standard for a Clif Bar. Although a bit high in sugar for a bar that’s about the size of my palm. 2 stars

Peppermint? Yay or nay? I would say I’m average- I do like York Peppermint Patties! But, I would much rather have some christmas cookies than a candy cane!

Clif Bar Iced Gingerbread Energy Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

Ahhh gingerbread. Brings me back to memories of Christmastime, either getting seriously sticky and messy decorating a gingerbread house, or baking delicious gingerbread cookies. I happen to be a fan of the deep taste of ginger and the slight crunch, and then a bit of frosting to add some sweetness. Delicious!

This particular bar is a seasonal one, and I’m assuming it’s available only around Christmastime. Why  I’m reviewing it in the beginning of September beats me, but, HEY- let’s just say I’m hopeful for the winter season to come (even though I DESPISE the cold. Gimme summer year round!! 😎 )

I opened the bar and was a bit surprised at what I saw. When I thought of “Iced” I thought there would be a layer of icing. Instead, it was more of a slight drizzle. A slight drizzle, in fact, that I barely tasted in the bar (was it really there? Or was it a figment of my imagination??)

As you can see, a few raisins scattered throughout the bar, with a light layer of icing.

The bar itself, was, eh, ok. It had a mild ginger flavor, but overall did have the flavor of a Gingerbread cookie. It was soft, and chewy, and rather dense. The raisins added a little bit of sweetness to the bar, but not much in terms of flavor. The taste actually reminded me of an oatmeal cookie, but with ginger.

It was ok, but certainly not my favorite. I dont think I would buy this in the future, for it was sort of lackluster, but it didn’t necessarily taste bad.  And, another thing to point out, 22 grams of sugar in one bar. OUCH! As a diabetic, I have to watch out for my sugar intake. I understand that some of the sugars may be from the raisins, but the first ingredient is Organic Brown Rice Syrup. Organic or not, sweetener is sweetener to me. And 22 grams is a bit much. But then again, this IS an energy bar- that energy has to come from somewhere!! (And I certainly had a ton of it during my spin class!!)

Overall, 3 stars.

What’s your favorite pre-workout snack? I usually stick to granola bars- easy on the stomach!!

I happen to be a big fan of Clif Bars. My all time favorite ones would have to be the Chocolate Chip and White Chocolate Macadamia Nut and also the Clif Crunch Peanut Butter & White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Granola Bars. They have some pretty tasty foods!

Today’s review is the Blueberry Crisp Energy Bar that I was sent to try for free. I wasn’t exactly thrilled in the beginning to try this one for some reason, I like blueberries and all but I thought they might taste funky in a granola or energy bar. But who am I to judge something solely on it’s name or appearance? Speaking of which, here’s how it looked

The thing that always gets me about Clif Bar & Company energy bars is that they seem tiny, but they actually ARE quite filling. I find them perfect to eat on an empty stomach for an early morning workout before I eat breakfast or whatnot to tie me over.

When I opened the package I immediately smelled a fragrant blueberry aroma. I took a bite, and noticed it was actually pretty sweet. Not sweet like candy, but I could certainly detect a good amount of sweetness. It kind of reminded me of a blueberry filling to a pie or a blueberry pancake syrup sort of flavor. It was crunchy from the almonds, chewy, and soft at the same time. I actually really liked the consistency of this bar, it had a lot going on. There were good sized pieces of nuts, which were fresh and crunchy, and added something special to the bar.

Overall, this bar was better than I thought it would be, and actually quite tasty. THe only drawback for me is that it has 21 grams of sugar per bar. Then again, I believe it’s intended to be an energy bar, so I’m sure some of those carbohydrates and sugar will we used up in the workout! 4 stars

1 bar is 240 calories, 5 grams of fat, 43 grams of carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber, 21 grams of sugar and 9 grams of protein.

Did you ever eat something you thought wasn’t going to be that good, and it surprised you? What was it?

Clif Bar & Company Energy Bars

Author: Healthnuttxo

Clif Bar & Company is one of my favorites- they make all natural and organic bars and products that help fuel the active lifestyle. One of  the things I eat before a workout is the Clif Bar energy bars. They come in a bunch of flavors in order to please a variety of people. You can view all the flavors on the website, here

Anyway, Clif Bar and Company was nice enough to send me some of their energy bars, including some of the seasonal ones. I decided to write up about the Chocolate Chip, White Chocolate Macadamia Nut, and Spiced Pumpkin Pie varieties. These are ideal before a workout for me, as I find them to be easily digested and provide the energy I need to kickbox, run, or whatever!

Each bar is about the size of an index card in length, and has a chewy, dense consistency.

Chocolate Chip is my favorite of the 3. It’s sweet and chewy, with big chocolate chips. It really tastes like cookie dough to me, especially when you heat it in the microwave for a few seconds (then the chocolate chips become gooey and just delicious!). And, if you let it sit for a minute or so after  microwaving it, it gets  a little bit of a “crunch” to it, which I would imagine to be from the oats. Another idea- smear some good ol’ peanut butter on it. What  better than salty & sweet combo? 🙂 5 stars

Next up on the list, is the White Chocolate Macadamia Nut. Also a divine flavor, this one is sweet and has a delicious drizzly coating of white chocolate icing, as well as white chocolate chunks throughout the bar. It’s buttery and flavor, and the macadamia nuts add a nice touch, without being overpowering. Again, awesome heated in the microwave 🙂 5 stars

Next up, the seasonal Spiced Pumpkin Pie . It has a nice pumpkin flavor, and you can definietely taste the nutmeg and spices. The thick coating of icing on top is the perfect addition, a sweet vanilla that balances the spices in this bar. The chewy raisins also add a nice touch, and make it feel more home-made. There were also pieces of almonds, which I could have done without, but weren’t bad. 4 stars
*note, this one is a seasonal flavor, meaning it’s only available during late in fall/winter season.
But once you can find it, it’s worth it!*

Overall, I loooove these bars! Although the downside is that they are a tad high in sugar per bar, it is good to energize you for a workout, or a meal on the go with some fruit or veggies. They are high in protein, fortified with vitamins and minerals, generally low in fat, and a good source of fiber per bar. They are also all natural and made with organic ingredients. I would highly reccomend these for the active lifestyle, or if you just want a yummy treat!

*Have you ever tried Clif bars? Which is your favorite?
*Also, Don’t forget the Nana’s Cookie Company giveaway!

Chocolate Chip- 1 bar is 240 calories, 5 grams of fat, 44 carbohydrates, 5 grams of fiber, 22 grams of sugar, and 10 grams of protein.

White Chocolate Macadamia Nut- 1 bar is 240 calories, 7 grams of fat, 41 carbohydrates,4 grams of fiber, 21 grams of sugar, and 9 grams of protein.

Organic Brown Rice Syrup, ClifPro® (Soy Rice Crisps [Soy Protein Isolate, Rice Flour, Barley Malt Extract], Organic Roasted Soybeans, Organic Soy Flour), Organic Rolled Oats, Soy White Chocolate (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Cocoa Butter, Soy Flour, Soy Lecithin, Natural Flavors), Organic Toasted Oats (Organic Oats, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice), Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, ClifCrunch® (Organic Oat Fiber, Inulin [Chicory Extract], Organic Milled Flaxseed, Organic Oat Bran, Psyllium), Macadamia Nuts, Organic Soy Butter, Organic Macadamia Nuts, Organic Date Paste, Natural Flavors, Sea Salt.

Spiced Pumpkin Pie- 1 bar is 240 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 45 carbohydrates, 4 grams of fiber,  25 grams of sugar, and 9 grams of protein.

Organic Brown Rice Syrup, ClifPro®(Soy Rice Crisps [Soy Protein Isolate, Rice Flour, Barley Malt Extract], Organic Roasted Soybeans, Organic Soy Flour), Organic Toasted Oats (Organic Oats, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice), Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Dried Pumpkin, ClifCrunch®(Apple Fiber, Organic Oat Fiber, Organic Milled Flaxseed, Inulin [Chicory Extract], Psyllium), Organic Dried Apples, Organic Raisins, Organic Date Paste, Organic Soy Butter, Soy White Chocolate (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Cocoa Butter, Soy Flour, Soy Lecithin, Natural Flavors), Organic Dry Roasted Almonds, Organic Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, Spices (Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Ginger, Cloves), Sea Salt, Colored with Annatto

Now, I’m more of a granola bar kinda girl over protein and “energy” bars , because usually they are filled with too much protein (at least in my opinion for what I’m looking for in a bar), too much saturated fat, and too much sugar. However, PowerBar has a line of products that fit everyone’s needs. They have ones for pre workout, recovery/post workout, ones with lower sugar, etc, and all of them have all natural ingredients.

I decided to try the Performance Energy Line with a coupon I was provided with by the company for a free bar- According to the website, here’s some info about this bar (Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor) …

  • Provides more energy to muscles with C2MAX
  • Contains 200mg sodium, a key electrolyte
  • The original energy bar
  • Low in fat, with 8–9g of protein per bar
  • No preservatives or artificial flavors”
  • These bars come in several flavors, and you know me, I chose the Chocolate Peanut Butter. Because, reallly, when has the combination ever failed?

So, moving on to the bar. It’s 2.29 ounces, so about average, I’d say the size of a  Nutri-grain bar, but a little longer. It isn’t your typical bar, however. The texture and appearance is chewy and easy to pull apart. It was pretty dense, and had “crispy” rice pieces in it. It was definietely sweet. The chocolate flavor overpowers the peanut butter flavor, and it takes on an almost coffee-ish taste. But, I liked it! It was tasty and I  actually enjoyed it. I DID need a glass of water to drink though while eating. The sodium was a tad high (200 mg) and the combination of chocolate and peanut butter just begged my mouth for some aqua.

Overall, I enjoyed this and will probably buy it again. I give it 4 stars, because it did as it promised. It provided me with a ton of energy- I actually got one of the best workouts despite the fact it was 630 in the morning!   The only thing I didn’t like was that it lacked fiber, so it isn’t a good “meal replacement” bar. But, that’s not really what it’s intended for and I think if they increased the fiber too much, it would be harder to digest. I also wish there was a bit more peanut butter flavor in it-but still yummy 🙂

1 bar is 240 calories, 3.5 grams of fat ( 1 saturated), 44 caarbohydrates (26 sugars), 1 gram of fiber, and 9 grams of protein. You also get 25% calcium needs!

C2 MAX CARBOHYDRATE BLEND (ORGANIC EVAPORATED CANE JUICE SYRUP, MALTODEXTRIN, FRUCTOSE, DEXTROSE), OAT BRAN, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, RICE CRISPS (MILLED RICE, RICE BRAN, ROSEMARY EXTRACT), BROWN RICE FLOUR, PEANUT FLOUR, NATURAL FLAVOR, NONFAT MILK, AND 2% OR LESS OF: PEANUT BUTTER, CHOCOLATE, ALKALIZED COCOA, CANOLA OIL, VEGETABLE GLYCERIN, SALT, ALMOND BUTTER, MINERALS: CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, POTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, FERROUS FUMARATE (IRON), VITAMINS: ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), VITAMIN B6 HYDROCHLORIDE, RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMINE MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1).

    Can Do Nutrition/Energy Bars

    Author: healthnuttxo

Hey guys- sorry it’s been a while. School, work and just a LOT to do lately. But I’m back, never fear!

    CANNNDO

Can Do Energy/Nutrition bars are geared towards kids who live active lifestyles. The bar was forumlated to help active kids get the nutrition they need while eating something that was tasty as well. The slogan is “It’s not about age, it’s about attitude!” A Can Do Kid can do anything! Of course, these bars can be eaten by anyone, even the kid at heart (like myself!). They are all natural, contain no trans fats,  no high fructose corn syrup, have 17 vitamins & minerals, and are now gluten free.

The Can Do company sent me all three of the flavors, Chocolate Crunch, Cookies & Cream, and Canilla Vanilla. Each of the packages has 2 conveinent bars, so if you want “one now and one for later”, you can do that, or eat both at the same time for a super energy boost!

Cookies & Cream– This didn’t really taste “cookies & creamy” to me. It tasted more like a chocolate malt than the traditional cookies & cream flavor we are all used to. However, it was still tasty, and it sure was chocolatey! Coated in a layer of smooth chocolate, there was a crispy texture in the middle. The chocolate coating is a bit “crumby”, and it falls off as you bite it. It was sort of a cross between a chocolate bar and a luna bar with the texture, consistency and the taste.

Chocolate Crunch– this bar tasted pretty much like the Cookies & Cream flavor, but it was a bit sweeter. I liked this one better than the Cookies & Cream flavor, it had a deeper chocolate taste.

Canilla Vanilla– Yum! Now i like this one!! It was also coated with chocolate, but a white chocolate. I think it had a slight macadamia flavoring. If you’ve ever had the white chocolate macadamia bar by Luna, it tastes somewhat similar. This was the sweetest of the three bars, but not overpoweringly sweet. There also was a slight hint of a cinnamon taste.

Overall, i think these would be best when you need a protein boost or a good choice after a workout. To me, the taste was like a “healthy candy bar”. You can get your chocolate/sweet fix without un-doing your diet, and also get some vitamins and minerals as well. My only complaint is that they lack fiber, something I like to have in a bar. I will probably buy the Can-illa Vanilla flavor again, because i like the protein. I had one of these bars when my tummy was GRUMBLING, and it satisfied me nicely.

1 package (2 bars) is 170 calories, 5-6 grams of fat, 20-21 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and 9 grams of protein.

Cookies & Cream- Organic Soy Protein, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Milk Chocolate (Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Milk Powder, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Cocoa Paste, Lecithin, Organic Vanilla Extract), Organic ChocolateChips (Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Cocoa Paste, Organic Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Organic Vanilla Extract), Soy Crisp (Soy Protein Isolate, Rice Flour, , Salt), Glycerin, Soynuts ( Soybeans, Sugar, Natural Flavors, Sunflower Oil, Salt), Peanut Butter (Ground Peanuts), Tricalcium Phosphate, salt, Vitamins and Minerals: ascorbic acid, d-alpha tocopherol, niacinamide, zinc oxide, vitamin A palmitate, electrolytic iron, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, copper gluconate, riboflavin, thiamin mononitrate, folic acid, biotin, potassium iodide, vitamin B12.

Chocolate CrunchOrganic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Soy Protein, Organic Milk Chocolate (Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Milk Powder, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Cocoa Paste, Lecithin, Organic Vanilla Extract), Organic Chocolate Chips (Organic Cane Sugar, Organic Cocoa Paste, Organic Cocoa Butter, Soy Lecithin, Organic Vanilla Extract), Glycerin,Soy Crisp (Soy Protein Isolate, Rice Flour, , Salt), Soynuts ( Soybeans, Sugar, Natural Flavors, Sunflower Oil, Salt, Caramel Color), Cocoa Powder (Processed with Alkali), Peanuts, Tricalcium Phosphate, Salt, Vitamins and Minerals: ascorbic acid, d-alpha tocopherol, niacinamide, zinc oxide, vitamin A palmitate, electrolytic iron, calcium pantothenate, pyridoxine hydrochloride, copper gluconate, riboflavin, thiamin mononitrate, folic acid, biotin, potassium iodide, vitamin B12.

Can-illa Vanilla-Organic White Chocolate (organic sugar, organic cocoa butter, organic milk powder, organic lecithin, organic vanilla), Organic Soy Protein, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Soy Crisp (soy protein isolate, rice flour, salt), Glycerin, Soynuts ( soybeans, sugar, natural flavors, sunflower oil, salt), Almonds, Tricalcium Phosphate, Cinnamon, salt. Clif Kid Organic Z Bar Apple Cinnamon

    Author: healthnuttxo

    zbar

I’m very fond of the Original Clif Bars. Yes-they are a little high in calories (250 for a bar) but they are nutritious, filling, and fuel me up perfectly pre-workout.

So, I decided to try the “kid version” of the Clif Bar. The company claims that is a wholesome bar with wholesome ingredients. No “junk”, or hydrogenated oils, preservatives, and artificial flavors or colors. They come in several flavors, chocolate chip, chocolate brownie, honey graham, spooky s’mores (my favorite-but only availble during Halloween. 🙁 !!, peanut butter, blueberry, and apple cinnamon.

I opened up the bar, and there are swirls of vanilla “icing” on the top. I took a bite-yummy! You can taste bits of apple and cinnamon for sure. It’s soft and chewy-kind of like a slightly undercooked cookie. I liked it-a lot! Certainly not just for kids!

It’s super healthy too. Pretty much all organic, whole grain, and with added vitamins and minerals. 1 bar is 120 calories,  2 grams of fat, 23 carbs, 3 grams of fiber, and 3 grams of protein. I think this with some fruit is a very substantial snack or a very light lunch on the go.

Organic Dried Apples, Organic Brown Rice Syrup, Organic Tapioca Syrup, Organic Fig Paste, Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Oat Flour, Organic Apple Juice Concentrate, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice Syrup, Organic Soy Butter, Organic White Coating (Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Organic Cocoa Butter, Organic Rice Extract, Organic Vanilla Extract), Organic Oat Fiber, Organic Milled Flaxseed, Organic Cinnamon, Organic Apple Flavor, Baking Soda, Salt, Natural Flavors.
