Vegan Smart All-in-One Nutritional Shake

Protein powder is a big staple in a lot of diets, especially those who are active, such as body builders and athletes, but also a great supplement to those who have a hard time ingesting protein or those who are dieting to help keep them full.

However, vegan options are relatively slim when it comes to protein powder, as most are made from Whey or Casein, which are animal-milk sourced. In comes Vegan Smart, who has made protein supplement with fiber, digestive enzymes, gluten free, dairy and soy free and some have additional benefits such as prebiotic fiber and Omega-3.

They sent me some samples of their vegan protein powder. I was pretty excited to try these, as I DO like protein powder, but whey is very hard on my stomach so I tend to avoid it entirely. Some fun facts:

  • The protein powders are made from peas, quinoa, chia, potato and chlorella.
  • They are 160-180 calories per serving with 20 grams of protein per serving
  • they have protease, amylase, lipase and bromelian for digestive enzymes
  • they contain medium chain triglycerides
  • certified vegan 
  • gluten free

I received 3 flavors, Cookies and Cream, Peaches & Cream, and Chocolate Raspberry. I mixed all the protein powder with almond milk.

Peaches & Cream:

  • mild peach flavor
  • stevia flavor prominent
  • pea protein flavor detectable
  • easy to mix, but recommend a NICE shake to get all the “bumps” out
  • went well with almond milk
  • good, but not my favorite. Needs more peach flavor/ less “stevia” based sweetness
  • 3 star

Chocolate Raspberry

  • mild chocolate flavor, more cocoa like in nature
  • very mild raspberry undertone
  • flavor is a bit muted, I think it needs a touch more sweetness
  • mildly sweet
  • Not my favorite, but good.
  • I think the chocolate raspberry balance is a bit off
  • blended it with ice and almond milk, wish I added a banana
  • 3 star

Cookies and Cream

  • this one was my favorite!
  • sweet and creamy
  • little baby cookie pieces
  • predominant vanilla flavor
  • stevia flavor is prominent once again
  • however, flavorful and tasty
  • 4 star

Overall, I enjoyed these. They may need a little extra TLC for mixing purposes, since pea protein can be a bit “gritty”. But, if you use a blender or just a shaker cup with a blender ball, you will be fine. I had no stomach issues and they kept me relatively satisfied post workout!

Peanuts are a problem these days- it seems allergies are very common, and places like schools and hospitals have become completely peanut free as a result.

Gluten is another problem. It is present in MANY foods, and can cause distress to those who are gluten intolerant or have Celiac’s disease.

In comes Rule Breaker snacks, who have developed  peanut free, nut free, gluten free and vegan snacks that are school SAFE! These snacks are made with chick peas, so they also provide a good source of protein and fiber. The company sent me the P’nutter Chocolate Chip Blondie to try.

It has 240 calories for one piece, with 10 grams of fat, (4.5 saturated), 33g of carbs, 3 grams of fiber, 13 grams of sugar and 3 grams of protein. So even with chickpeas as the first ingredient, I wasn’t super thrilled with the nutrition, but if it’s intended to be a treat, then I think it’s ok.

I had it both right out of the package and microwaved for some added goodness. Here is what it looked like:

 

Okay, Okay…but how was it?

It was…good. You can definitely taste the chickpea flavor, as it is predominant throughout the blondie. So if you’re not a chickpea fan, you may not like this.The mini chocolate chips add a nice touch, just the right amount of sweetness, and balance out the chickpea flavor. Not sure what the white parts of the bar are….white chocolate? They were sweet and also added a nice touch with a mild vanilla flavor.

I actually recommend microwaving it and then waiting a minute or two and eating it. The chocolate chips get all melty and the texture shifts from more dense and soft to slightly on the crunchier side. The bar itself has a sweeter feel to it, and is rich which is partly from the beans but I also believe from “no-nut butter” listed.

Overall, I think it’s a good snack, especially for kids who may feel they are left out from parties, etc. because they cannot eat the same snacks as everyone else if they have nuts, gluten etc. in it. It has a rich flavor, but is sweet enough that kids and adults can enjoy.

Overall, 3.5 star.

Modern Table Lentil Pastas

HEY GUYS!

Sorry it’s been a while. I was working 70-80 hour work weeks for the past month and a half and didn’t have time to sit down to write a quality review…but I am back and I know you missed me! 🙂

So Modern Table sent me some yummy pastas to try. They are full of PROTEIN from red lentils and peas, which is something that is important to me. I am very active and at the gym 6x a week, so if I want a side with my lunch or dinner, I want it to have some type of protein component, to fill any gaps I might be missing with a busy lifestyle. They are complete proteins– you might ask what that is. Amino acids are building blocks of protein, and 9 of them your body CANNOT make and you must eat. The issue lies that protein from plant sources may not have all of the 9 essential amino acids (meat does), but since this pasta is a combination of lentil, pea and rice, together it has 9 essential amino acids. So this is another added bonus! This pasta seemed to be the perfect fit. In addition, they are GLUTEN FREE and NON-GMO certified, with no artificial preservatives.

As a warning, most of these have you cook the pasta about 6-8 minutes. It will be more al dente, so if you like it softer, I suggest cooking it longer. Also, I have yet to cook a batch where they don’t stick to the bottom of the pan, even with lowering the temperature. So be warned!

ALSO –> I also asked my friend for help to review these because she is more of a pasta fan than I am. So here is both of our takes on most of these:

First up, Classic Cheddar Mac & Cheese.

Well this was….delicious. A super Cheesy flavor, moreso on the salty side, and reminiscent of that classic blue box. The Lentil Noodles are just like normal flour type but slightly more al dente/firm
FRIEND FEEDBACK: she wrote,
I did like it a lot actually and I liked that it could be cooked al dente and wasn’t mushy like a lot of non-flour based pastas are. There was a bit of an aftertaste but I don’t remember what you said it was made of but way better than other lentil pastas I tried. I would probably buy it in the future so I could feel better about eating pasta
Her rating: 3.5. My rating: 4. So we shall give it… a 4.

 

 

Next up, the 3 cheese mac & cheese, penne style.

This one was also super delicious, and I actually liked the idea of penne mac and cheese versus elbow. The cheese flavor was “deeper” for lack of a better word, and less salty. I liked this one more than the classic cheddar, as it was smoother, more flavorful, and I think complimented my meals better.

 

Next up, Sundried Tomato Basil.

 

This one was yummy! Definitely a strong tomato and parmesan cheese flavor. I cooked mine al dente and preferred it that way, because it gave a nice bite. It was a little on the salty side, but still great flavor. I also detected a nice zing at the end– maybe lemon? Regardless…I am a fan. 4/5 stars.

 

Parmesan Pesto

Again, a yummy one! The pesto flavor was pretty strong but balanced well with parmesan, and I loved the baby peas and carrots that were intertwined. I let my friend try this one as well, who is a bigger pasta fan than I am, and she said she enjoyed it

 

I honestly have minimal complaints  with these pastas except they are  VERY carby! Around 60-70 carbs for one serving, which is actually a bit more than your traditional flour based pasta. However, keep in consideration they are lentil based, which are very carb rich to begin with, but have more fiber and a lower glycemic index, as well as more protein. So 10 or more carbs might be worth the trade-off!

I definitely suggest giving these a try, the meals were delicious and my entire family enjoyed them (no one knew it wasn’t wheat pasta!!), with additional benefit of protein & fiber.

Did someone say…Hazelnut spread??

Okay, so I know almost everyone likes “chocolate” hazelnut butter…. & if you don’t, well…I’m  not sure what to say actually because I have never encountered anyone who hasn’t.

While I’ve had plenty of the typical brands on the shelves, I have yet to see this brand, Rigoni di Asiago. Now that’s probably from one of a few things. 1. I am in the ZONE when I shop. I need xyz brand and I don’t look at other brands. 2. I am oblivious sometimes or 3. perhaps the store actually doesn’t have it. However, there is a little specialty store by my house that I have a feeling will definitely carry this product, and I  100% want to buy it after trying it.

This product is a product of Italy, gluten free, made without palm oil, non-GMO,  organic, and does NOT contain hydrogenated fats (yay!), or artificial colors, flavors or other additives. According to the pamphlet I got, the hazelnuts are selected by the Rigoni family…which I think is both amazing quality assurance and…well…adorable.

Now this is not a health food by any means, BUT, it is a much better alternative to a more processed version of hazelnut spread, because we all need our sweet fix every now and then.

Here are the nutritional facts:

note…the jar is empty…oops. Perhaps I *inhaled* this jar? + my family found this jar and decided they were going to inhale it as well. Le sigh.

Anyway, this is well worth the “cheat”. Smooth, creamy and sweet. It is definitely on the sweeter side, but in a way that is a good thing, because it’s hard to eat a lot of something when it is su indulgent. The jar is pretty small… so make it last!

The saturated fat isn’t terrible, I’ve seen much worse in other hazelnut spreads which I am contributing to the fact they didn’t use palm oil. Which I also like- because it didn’t have that “oily residue” on top that I’ve seen before.

UNFORTUNATELY, my family got to this jar before I could make the recipe. But, if anyone gives it a try let me know! Otherwise, this is a hit in my book. In moderation, of course 🙂

Thunderbird Real Food Bar

WELL sorry it’s been a while guys…life got a little hectic the past month but I’m back, never fear 8)

Coming at you with some Real Food Bars by Thunderbird. They sent me 4 varieties to try, all vegan, no added sugar, and grain/gluten free. They are nut, seed and date based. As an added benefit, they are also paleo certified. (NOTE: This applies to the bars I got from the company, if you check the website they have several flavors to pick from and details may vary!)

So let’s get started:

As I said above, all of them more or less have the same texture, nutty/seedy with a fruity, date base. The date flavor was there in all 4 bars.

Hazelnut + Coffee + Maca

Coming from a coffee lover, this was not my favorite. It was…gritty. Like I would take a bite of the bar and then grit.  WHAT IS THAT?!?! I checked the ingredients, and it seems it could have been the coffee beans or chia seeds, not entirely sure, but not entirely a fan. The coffee flavor was definitely strong, but overpowered the hazelnut component because I did not taste that too much. The date was sweet and strong as well…If I had to rename this bar it would be like “A Date with Coffee”…because it really just tasted like dates and coffee.

2 stars.

Cashew + Fig + Carrot

Alrighty, moving on. This one was okay. As a whole, it was entirely too sweet without much of another component to balance it out– needed more crunch, or something even slightly salty, etc. The Fig + Carrot together gave it a sweet potato vibe. & like I said, this one was lacking on the crunch factor, a cashew is a pretty soft nut to begin with so it was kind of lost in this bar. Overall, too sweet, too fruity, needs something else. Maybe almond would have been a better choice.

Peach Pecan Vanilla 

In this bar, the peach and date flavor really shine through. The vanilla flavor is somewhat lost. It’s a sweet bar, but not overly sweet, and almost gives off an apricot type of flavor. Chewy, dense and nutty, and the pecans add a nice crunch. I almost taste a bit of cashew in this one. Overall, this one was pretty good, I’m a fan.

3.5 stars

Texas Maple Pecan

Well, well, well, moving on to the star. This one was kind of like pecan pie 🙂 Chewy and dense, sweet but not overly so, huge chunks of pecan and a nice cinnamon flavor. It goes well with the date because it reminds me of the condensed milk, etc. they use to make pecan pie. The maple flavor is subtle,  but delicious. There is some type of “zing” to the bar, and I can’t quite figure out what it is–perhaps the cinnamon– but I like it. Basically if you’re like me and will eat the topping of a pecan pie, you’ll like this bar.

4 stars.

OVERALL, I like the idea of these bars. Gluten free, paleo, minimal ingredients, no added sugar. I think some need a tad bit of tweaking, BUT you have to also consider the minimal ingredient component. I would definitely try the Pecan based flavors, and I would be interested in trying the other flavors (like ummm they have this cool Pecan Goji Pistachio flavor!!) Thunderbird has to offer.

Hi Guys!

Hope you all had a fantastic Thanksgiving. I know I ate too much. But certainly enjoyed all the food, and hope everyone else did too AND enjoyed their family time.

In the spirit of Black Friday, I will be hosting a giveaway today based on this review.
Go Macro sent me a box of bars, the “Thrive” line. These bars are organic, non-GMO, gluten free, soy free, kosher, vegan, and low glycemic.  They come in a variety of flavors, which we will go over below.

The bars more or less had the same texture- dense and chewy. They were hearty and most had a sesame seed and date flavor.

Chocolate Nuts & Sea Salt--> this one was pretty darn good. The chocolate amount was decent– I feel like sometimes when companies add chocolate chips you get like 3 chips for the whole bar and they have the NERVE to call it a chocolate flavored bar… haha, not the case here. The dark chocolate chips are prevalent. The cashew flavor goes well with the chocolate. The sea salt? lacking. Needs more of that, however, still good.   —-4 stars

Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip--> this one was a bit more dense than the others, but very good. A peanut butter base, with peanut butter chips and a hint of chocolate. Picture a peanut butter cup but in a “granola” bar form. So did I like it? Yeah I liked it. Do you like peanut butter cups? Yea? Okay, you’ll like this one.  — 4 1/2 stars

Almond Apricot–> this one is pretty good. Seems “nuttier” than the others in flavor, a tad bit more crunchier. The apricot gives a nice sweetness that is scattered throughout the bar, and the almond adds that crispy crunch you sometimes crave in a “chewier” bar. —-4 star

Blueberry Lavender–> lavender… personally I am not a fan of ingesting lavender. Makes me feel like I am eating soap. But I digress…. anyway, this bar was okay. Lightly sweet, slightly bitter aftertaste. The blueberry flavor was prominent, and lavender had a hint. I think the flavor overall was a bit flat and almost needed a pinch of salt.    — 3 star

Ginger Lemon–>The ginger in this bar was mild, but prevalent, and went really well with the lemon flavor. I happen to be a fan of ginger, and the “burn/spice” you get from ginger was not present, which is good for those who don’t enjoy ginger, however I felt myself missing that.  However, it was a great combo and almost reminded me of a cookie. But again, I felt it was a bit flat/missing something.  —- 3 1/2 star

Caramel Coconut--> my personal favorite, wish I could order a box of just these. It was super, super yummy! Lightly sweetened with coconut and a mild caramel flavor, but went oh so well together. Reminded me of these coconut condensed milk brownies my mom makes for the holidays. The coconut flavor shines through and overall, a delicious bar.  — 4 1/2 stars

BFree Wheat and Gluten Free Foods

A company that just expanded to the East Coast, I got some yummy bread samples from from BFree! They create products that are gluten free, wheat free, nut free, dairy free, soy free, no sugar added, Non GMO, and more. They can appeal to anyone with special dietary needs, especially those with severe allergies.

With Celiac’s Disease and gluten intolerance on the rise, it’s important to have companies that care to replace bread or pasta products in people’s diets that are allergy friendly, and also I think it’s great these products are also nut and dairy free, because more often than not, you find people have Celiac’s AND another allergy/intolerance to dairy or nuts. The GI tract is connected, so it makes sense!

Anyway, moving onward. I received a plethora of samples from BFree, including wraps, dinner rolls, bread, and bagels. Let’s get to it!

First up, Soft White Sandwich Loaf.

The sandwich loaf bread crisped up nice in the toaster oven. It had a nice crunch but was relatively bland on it’s own. The texture and consistency are good, chewy and soft underneath a crusty exterior. It doesn’t have much flavor, so it’s perfect for eating with toppings, just not alone. It doesn’t mask flavors either, so it went well with the PB&J. I think toasting is necessary. 3 stars

Next up, the Brown Seeded Sandwich Loaf.

This one, as you can see I also had with some peanut butter and one with butter, since plain and toasted is relatively flavorless. I noticed this one (and the white) take a while to toast in comparison to the bread I usually have. I didn’t really like the one with the butter…becuase the flavor of the bread isn’t masked. Alone, the bread has an odd seedy kind of rye bread flavor. With the peanut butter, the flavor is masked, and it is a crunchy piece of bread with a soft interior, that doesn’t affect the flavor of the peanut butter. So again, this bread is good if you have a spread you like on top. 2 1/2 

 

Next up, the bagels! First, the multi-seed bagel. 

Here it is toasted with some butter. Right off the bat, I am kind of annoyed because these aren’t pre sliced..HAH. I guess I am spoiled and used to pre-cut bagels.

This one toasted wasn’t bad. The texture isn’t 100% like a gluten filled bagel, since the dense chewiness comes from wheat gluten. But, this is pretty darn good for a gluten free bagel. It is chewy in a different way, and fluffy. It had the consistency of the chewiness of the bread but thicker since it it a bagel. The flavor again is really not there, very bland, and the seeds didn’t provide much flavor. I think all of these previous breads need a touch of salt or something to help bring out flavor. However, I think it would be good with butter and jam, or butter and a fried egg 🙂  3 1/2 stars

Next up, the white/ Plain Bagel.

This one we toasted and put cream cheese on!

This one was not really a hit. I also let my brother try this one (it was his cream cheese after all…) and he was not a fan. It was very bland, airy, and didn’t have that chew like the seeded bagel did. Even after toasted the inside of the bagel didn’t change color much, so I couldn’t really tell when it was done. Just not a fan, it almost took away the flavor from the cream cheese, and the consistency not as good as the seeded bagel. 2 stars

Next up, the Quinoa and Chia Seed Wrap.

This one I am iffy about… I liked it at first, then as I made more wraps with it and continued to eat it, I grew to dislike it. One problem with the wrap for starters is that after you defrost it, it is WET. You need to really get the moisture out with a paper towel unless you will have a soggy wrap. I am used to having frozen then fresh wraps, and usually you just wipe off the little bit of condensation, but this one you need to really blot or toast to get some of the water out. I assume that is because it is made with rice, which holds onto water.

Anyway, this wrap doesn’t offer much flavor other than the seeds, so if you like a seedy flavor, you may like it. However, the consistency got semi- mealy after I continued to eat it. Not really a fan. It ripped really easy and isn’t chewy like a wrap normally is for me, and is a bit stiff. 2 stars

Lastly, the dinner rolls! Brown Seeded and Soft White.

These we heat up slightly in the oven and then cut open and put pats of butter on them.  The Brown roll was earthy and nutty tasting… it reminded me of a granola bar almost with some pumpkin seed flavor. It was pretty bland otherwise and needed some salt. The texture was chewy and a little dense which I actually kind of liked. 2 1/2 stars

The white roll was pretty good.

Again, a little bland, needed some salt, but tasted pretty close to a gluten filled white bread roll. Chewy and the thickness of the roll went well with the warm butter and dinner. I would eat this one again. 3 1/2 stars

Overall, BFree Foods has some hits and some misses in my book. HOWEVER, these are definitely some of the better gluten free products I have tried. Due to the nature of rice, a lot of GF products end up being piecey in consistency, or fall apart in your mouth, and just plain awful. These products, while a tad bland, were versatile and textures were honestly pretty good. The wrap was my least favorite, and I think the more “bread-y” products did better. I think these are definitely worth a try, especially if you have allergies.

Introducing…Vitamin Shoppe’s Protein Pantry!

IMG_6725 A new section at Vitamin Shoppe filled with yummy protein packed foods! My favorite. Aside from the traditional protein bars, I like eating protein enriched foods, since I have such an active lifestyle. Gotta fuel those muscles!

They sent me MET-RX Protein Pancake Mix, P28 Apple Crisp Spread, and D’s Naturals Fluff Butter in Chocolate Fudge Cake Batter and Vanilla Maple.

First up…the pancakes!

You can do 2-3 scoops with up to 1/3-1/2 cup of water, mix, and cook. I decided to use milk and cook with some pam and light butter because I like my pancakes crispy.

These were super yummy! They got crispy on the outside from the butter, but remained fluffy and moist on the inside. There was a delicious vanilla aroma being pervaded throughout the house when I was cooking them. They mixed easily, and cooked within a few minutes. The flavor was mildly sweet, mild buttermilk flavor, and even a touch of what felt like a vanilla protein flavor.

I liked them! I think they are versatile and welcome your own additions, but are great with butter and some sugar free syrup alone. You can view the nutritional facts below. I’m a little bummed sugar is the second ingredient added, and wheat flour is used over whole wheat. The protein count to carb and sugar ratio is a little low for me, so these will be used more as a pre-workout meal versus a post workout. With that being said, 4 stars. Great for people trying to put on some mass as well, as they are easy to eat and have some good quality calories.

Next up, The P28 Apple Crisp Spread

Here’s the spread on some toast:

As you can see, it was pretty creamy in texture. At least…the top part was. The bottom half got a little drier, more “cement” like, kind of when you extract the natural oil out of non hydrogenated oil. It needs the fat! So if you do buy this, make sure you stir it! The bottom also had tiny bits of raisins and granola crunches that you miss out on until you hit the bottom of the jar. The flavor otherwise is okay, it’s a little pasty, not too sweet, not salty, and pretty mild. I really liked it on toast after I added some jelly, which brought out the flavors of the Apple Crisp spread so much. The apple undertones really came out, and I could taste the cinnamon as well. Overall, good, but not a favorite eaten alone, especially when you hit the bottom. The nutritional profile is actually pretty awesome too- high in fat, obviously, but sugar is low and protein is high. Carbohydrates aren’t much higher than a normal serving of peanuts either. 4 stars

2 tablespoons is 200 calories, 16 grams of fat, 3 saturated fat, 10 mg of sodium, 8 grams of carbohydrate, 2 grams of fiber, 3 grams of sugar, and 14 grams of protein.

 Lastly, D’s Naturals Fluff Butter

First up, the Vanilla Maple

As you can see, on toast, it kind of “disintegrated” when it was warm.

So next round, I waited until it cooled off a bit, and added some Jelly.

Alone, not a huge fan of this flavor. It’s a little pasty, and tastes like almond extract with a maple flavor. It’s thick, but not super creamy, and has this odd texture which I think is from the pea protein. If you have ever had pea protein, you know what I am talking about. It’s not creamy…it has this “powdery” texture even when blended with a liquid. I can’t have a spoon of this all at once…too powerful of flavor.

On toast with Jelly, much better. Even though a lot of the flavor seems to disappear into the toast, and I just seemed to taste it mildly. Overall, not a huge fan. I would pass on this one. 2 1/2 stars

Lastly, the Chocolate Fudge Cake Batter Almond Fluffbutter. 

This one was pretty good. I liked it better than the Vanilla Maple. It was sweet, but not sugary. It was a little pasty, and you could taste the pea protein. It definitely has a fudge flavor, and reminds me a little bit like chocolate frosting, but not as sugary. Like a protein chocolate frosting. It is creamy, and you can taste the almond which is nice. The flavors are mild, but good. I enjoyed this one straight up- which is vital for me to really enjoy a spread or nut butter. 4 stars

I got some yummy Perky Fruit Bodies to try! What is that, you say? These are organic, raw, vegan, gluten free, and kosher “fruit leathers”.

Coconut Banana– this one is squished!

IMG_7576The color and appearance isn’t appetizing, but we always go beyond that for food reviews! The flavor is OK. Banana and coconut flavor is strong, the banana provides the natural sweetness, and tastes like an over-ripened banana. It is dry, and a bit flaky. It is not “sticky” like you would picture a “fruit roll up”, and is more like a natural fruit leather, but still on the drier side. It’s alright. 2 1/2 stars

Strawberry Banana– this one is good!

IMG_7578Tangy from the strawberries, and sweet from the banana. Tastes like a strawberry banana smoothie in fruit leather form. It is a bit chewier than the Coconut Banana, and more held together, which I like. It has a bit of a “rip” to it when you bite it. I would eat this one again. 4 star

Cacao Banana Coconut-  this one I also like.

IMG_7577The cacao flavor is pretty strong, but it gives a chocolate covered banana flavor to it. Good amount of sweetness. The Cacao gives almost a dark chocolate feel as well. The coconut flavor is very mild, and lacking, but I don’t mind because I think it tastes good the way it is. Chewy and has a nice “rip” to it…I like this one! 4 star

Overall, not bad! They run 60-130 calories each, ranging from 14-18 carbs and 0-7 grams of fat depending on the flavor. I think they would go great as a pre workout snack, as you are getting a boost of energy from the sugars from the fruits, and they are light enough where they will not make you feel sluggish during a workout. I also like how they are individually wrapped and easy to bring with you on the go. You can view nutritional information below.
