Pereg Natural Foods Banana Flour

Author: Healthnuttxo

Before I start, I have never heard of banana flour. I didn’t even know you could get a powdered consistency out of a banana. I mean what banana have you eaten that is…dry?! But… on that note, let’s begin!

Pereg contacted me and asked if I wanted to try their alternative flours – and I happily obliged. The thought of banana flour seemed cool — does this mean I get to count it as extra serving of fruit? ūüėČ

This flour is vegan, GMO free, Gluten Free, made in the USA, & Kosher. According to the bag, it is a gluten-free alternative to wheat flour. The ingredients? 100% banana flour. Don’t ask me how- I’m still not sure how they made flour out of bananas, but if they can make milk out of almonds, I feel like almost anything can be done!

1/4 cup of a serving is 97 calories, 0.5 grams of fat, 24 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, 13 gams of sugar and 1 gram of protein. So pretty standard — the macros of a banana.

Okay problem, what on earth do I make with banana flour…. the bag comes with a recipe on the back for chocolate flour cake. I decided to google some popular recipes and found 2 of them for banana-chocolate brownies.

The first recipe…was a DUD. I should have realized that, including the majority of the recipe called for applesauce and only 1/4 cup of the banana flour. I won’t even go into it, because I threw it right in the trash.

I looked for a more reputable recipe, off a rather famous looking blog and decided to use that recipe. It had good reviews, and I followed the recipe posted verbatim. Here was the result:

The result?

I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t really like it enough to make it again. If I didn’t add the generous handful of chocolate chips, I’m not sure if I would like this at all. I know it’s difficult to judge a flour based on an entire recipe, but both recipes I made had this predominant weird flavor to it– alas, the banana flour. The thing is, it wasn’t a sweet banana flavor, but moreso the starchy, GREEN banana flavor. Have you ever tried to eat a banana that was green? Because thats the flavor that the banana flour gave to the recipes.

I’m sure if you mask the flavor well enough — say with chocolate — it’s a good alternative. For now, the banana flour may be chilling in the back of my closet until I get the urge to try another recipe. To be fair, I did eat all of the “brownies” I made, but like I said, they were just ok.

The consistency however, was pretty good for the brownie. Fluffy, more-so on the bread like side, and a little dense. I think this flour is good for cake like brownie or dessert cake recipes.

3 stars for the banana flour.

Would I buy it? Debatable. I am honestly finding it hard to make something else out of the banana flour, but I think I might make banana bread again but with the flour AND ripe bananas, see how it goes.

On another note, I was also given Teff flour. However, that review is…coming. I honestly didn’t know what Teff was (apparently it’s a grain!) but I have yet to find time in my 6 day a week work schedule to make something out of Teff, but when I do, I will post here.

DICLAIMER: I was given this flour to try for free. This is an unbiased review.

Outer Spice Original & Spicy seasonings

I got these spices to try from Outer Spice! I was sent two varieties, the No Salt Spicy version, and the Himilayan Sea Salt Original blend. They have a retail value of roughly $6.99 each.  They are MSG, GMO and Gluten Free, and made from high quality spices and herbs.

I used these a few times during cooking. We made chicken cutlets with the Spicy variety, and then I used the Original variety for turkey burgers (see below), shrimp garlic stir fry, and grilled chicken with veggies in a butter sauté.

imageI’ll review the Spicy variety first!

It was…not spicy actually!
Again, we made chicken cutlets with this spice mixed into breadcrumb mixture and fried.
I noticed that the thyme flavor was pretty strong. Again, it was not salty- no salt!
The flavor was unique and went well with the chicken but it wasn’t spicy, so a bit deceiving! 3 1/2 star

Next up, the Original blend.

It was very thyme-y again, with possibly Rosemary?
Not much other prominent flavors, but will enjoyable.
It went well with the meats, and my favorite was with the shrimp and grilled chicken stir frys. I did add some salt since it was not super salty. 4 stars.

Overall, pretty good and worth a try! I would pick em up and add them to your favorite dishes! If you order directly from their website, there is also FREE shipping! Woo! Click here to get some.

I received this this product for free. This is an unbiased review.

Popcorn is by far my favorite snack (this post is still not biased!!). I was sent 3 flavors of a brand of popcorn I have never heard of, or even seen in stores, for free. Live Love POP sent me Lime Fresco, Sea Salt, and Truffle Salt popcorn, all made with minimal ingredients, and waist line friendly (30 calories per cup!).

The popcorn comes in brown bags that were both easy to open and close to stay fresh. I like that it had a nice sturdy bag, but also a natural feel, and had a zipper built in the bag. My number one pet peeve with snacks is that the cheap plastic breaks and then you have a bag ripped down the middle, thus, either snacks all over the floor from improper opening or stale snacks. BOOO!

I decided to try the Truffle Salt flavor first. And boy was I not disappointed! It was SO good! I never had truffles, or truffle salt, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, this popcorn had a lot of flavor and almost reminded me of a garlic knot. Garlic knot flavored popcorn for 30 cals a cup? COUNT ME IN! I did not miss the butter or anything on this popcorn, flavor was covered! It also had a good amount of salt, but not too much. My only complaint was that bag was too small! heh! 4 1/2 stars

Next up, the Sea Salt. This one was honestly pretty bland. I know it had no other flavor really except salt, but it was even lacking in the salt department. It was crunchy and fluffy popcorn, which kept me eating the rest of the bag, but I wouldn’t buy this one in the future if I had the chance. Not enough salt to have a sea salt flavor. 3 stars

Lastly, Lime Fresco.

This one I had high hopes for, especially after the Truffle Salt flavor. It sounded semi exotic, and a new flavor I never tried when it came to popcorn! The popcorn was a bit odd. It had a lime flavor, some bites more potent than others, that was a bit sour, mixed with some salt flavor. The flavor reminded me of a lime rub you would put on chicken to grill with. It got better as I ate more of it, and although it wasn’t my favorite, it wasn’t bad. I feel like a touch of butter would have been perfect, but again, 30 cals a cup a can’t really complain! 3 ¬†stars

Overall, I like the popcorn! I would LOVE to have more of that truffle flavored popcorn and love to see if Live Love POP has any more flavors to try. I think they would make a really good sweet flavored popcorn, because I like the direction they are going in! These popcorns are vegan, all natural, and GMO free ūüôā

Fan of Dark Chocolate? Then you need to check out Nibmor! They made chocolate that is all natural, gluten free, dairy free, vegan, organic, raw AND has no refined sugar! According to the website, “At NibMor we believe that the food we eat should be as simple as possible. That means using ingredients made by Mother Nature, not someone in a lab coat.”

Now that’s what I like to see- food at it’s finest. If I’m going to eat candy, I want the candy to be PURE!!

Anyway- Nibmor asked if I wanted to try their chocolates, and sent me a Dark Chocolate with Almonds and Dark Chocolate bar. I’m not much of a dark chocolate fan, but these seemed different. They were just so PURE sounding, I couldn’t resist! So, I actually¬†was a bit¬†excited to try these, and recruited my mom as well (the chocolate lover of the family) to give them a try.

First off, the texture is so different than any other chocolate bars I’ve tried. It’s SO soft- almost like it’s “melted”-but it’s not! Like really, I’m used to the types of chocolate where you have to break it and then hear a “snap!”, but no snap here! Just smooth, chocolatey goodness.

Original Dark Chocolate- A deep cocoa flavor, with both a slight vanilla and slight “berry” taste. Unique! But good, too! It was silky smooth, and almost “cool” tasting. It didn’t have much of a bite to it (like I said before), but was enjoyable. It’s very rich, and you don’t need more than a square for some satisfaction.

Dark Chocolate with Almonds- smells AWESOME! Again, the texture is great, smooth and silky. It had itty-bitty almond pieces scattered throughout, but other than that, didn’t provide much almond flavor. It was pretty much the same as the Original Dark Chocolate bar, but just with the almonds. However, still pretty good!

Overall, I approve! Including i’m not an avid dark chocolate fan, these were actually quite enjoyable. I like that¬†you actually get a decent portion as well without a TON of calories or sugar.¬†I also love that there isn’t any refined sugar, and that they are raw, vegan, gluten/dairy free, and according to the package, “As Close to Nature as it Gets!”. I’m giving these bars 4 stars– I hope one day they come out with milk chocolate or dark chocolate with peanut butter! Wouldn’t that be yummy!

Original Dark Chocolate- 31 1/2 grams is 120 calories, 7 grams of fat (4 saturated), 13 carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, 8 grams of sugar, and 1 gram of protein.

Sharkies Organic Kids Sports Chews

Author: Healthnuttxo

Are you a runner? Or a sports enthusiast who needs quick energy? Or maybe, you just want something sweet, organic and chewy?

Well, Sharkies Organic¬†Kids Sports¬†Chews are the answer!¬†These chews are USDA certified organic, gluten free, nut free, GMO free, fructose free, have no trans fat, and provide 100% of your daily needs of vitamin C. The company sent me some of their products to try, and I decided to review the Kids variety. (Sharkies also come in the “adult” variety- which are still organic fruit chews)

The Kids sports chews come in 4 flavors- the 45 gram packs of Tropical Splash, and Berry Blasters, and then the “lunchbox variety” Berry Bites & Fruit Splash.

The chews were very delicious, and the texture was right on. Not too “gummy” and not weirdly “chewy”- they were the perfect mix of the two.¬†Think of gummy bears, but a little bit stiffer and not so sticky.¬†I loved that they were in cute shark shapes, and came in vibrant colors like orange, yellow, and purple. They were definitely sweet (seeing as the first ingredient is cane juice/tapioca syrup or brown rice syrup), but weren’t sickly sweet or artifical tasting like some gummy products can be.

I know when I run, I cannot eat too much before hand (I’ve been blessed with a senstive stomach– thank youuuu genetics! ). I found that eating a package of these provided me with a ton of energy, and NO troubles on the tummy. I also ate a few for a quick burst of energy during my 10K run.

Overall, I give these 4 1/2 stars. Tasty and great for supplying immediate energy for races and more. I think I’ll probably eat them instead of candy gummy bears too, as a healthier, organic alternative ūüėČ
