Corazonas Banana Walnut Oatmeal Square

Author: Healthnuttxo

I have a confession.

I’m obsessed with banana flavored things. Banana bread, banana ice cream, banana yogurt (yes! they make it!). I DONT like fake banana (aka laffy taffy) but real banana flavored things I absolutely adore. Which, go figure, I find weird because I’m not all that crazy about bananas themselves. Hmm.

So, I got this free Corazonas Banana Walnut Oatmeal Square from the company to review, and I was pumped. BANANA walnut. Even if it was Banana spinach flavored oatmeal square I probably would have been excited. Ok, maybe I’m overexaggerating, but let’s just get it out there that I love banana.

Who nibbled my bar!?!?! oh wait…

So, pregym, I had this bar with a scoopful of peanut butter. It was one of those mornings where I DID NOT want to wake up early and have a proper breakfast before the gym, so a granola bar would suffice. Although, always prepare for the munchies later on if you don’t have a big breakfast! Or at least that’s the case for me!

ANYWAY- this square was really quite good. It was soft, chewy and dense, and you could really taste the banana. It tasted like genuine and real banana for the most part, but did have a tinge of that “artificial flavor” feel to it. But not too bad. And not like laffy taffy (sorry to those who love laffy taffy- can’t do that fake banana flavor!!).

There was a slight cinnamon flavor, and it was certainly sweet! The oats gave it a hearty texture and it was a rather satisfying bar. I felt energized during my workout (trust me, I hardly sleep anymore so I definitely didn’t get the energy from a solid 8 hours of sleep!   ) and I couldn’t get over how banana-y it was. The whole “walnut” aspect of this bar was lackluster for me. I don’t even know if I remember tasting them?? Magical walnuts perhaps…?

Anyway- 4 stars. A good bar. I would buy it in the future.

I'm such a fail at taking pictures of nutritional facts. Boo.

Apple Cinnamon “Rice Pudding” Oatmeal

Author: Healthnuttxo

This morning, I was feeling something a little different than my normal bowl (ok…two bowls) of cereal, with fruit, milk and spoon full of peanut butter. Don’t get me wrong, I think that will always be my favorite breakfast, but I was feeling some change.

So I cooked up some oatmeal, added a few ingredients, and once I tasted it, it really reminded me of rice pudding! Rice pudding is one of my absolute favorite desserts, especially topped with cinnamon. Now I can enjoy it, with the health benefits of oats!

Here’s what you need:

1/2 cup rolled oats (I used Quaker)
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla
BUNCH of cinnamon- I didn’t measure, but I added a lot.
1 apple (half cut in tiny pieces, half in slices or however you want to eat)
3 packets stevia (or sugar)
butter (to taste)

In a pot, add the milk, water, oats, cinnamon, vanilla, and 2 packets of stevia. Cook until desired consistency. Add half of the apple to the pot in the final minute or so, so it is warm and soft.

Transfer oatmeal to a bowl. Add the final packet of stevia/sugar on top, along with the butter. Add some milk around the edges if desired. Enjoy with other half of apple, some toast, juice, etc.

I gotta learn to wipe the sides of the bowl clean before I take pictures …..  ; )

I really liked this oatmeal- I will certainly try it again. Let me know if you try it and like it!

What’s your favorite oatmeal recipe? I’d love to hear some!

Who here eats yogurt for the beneficial probiotics it provides and the taste they love? :) (meeeee!!!!!)

Who here eats yogurt for just the beneficial probiotics it provides?

Well, for those of you who aren’t too fond of yogurt, here is a product you may want to try. PopCulture Probiotics makes delicious and healthy products that contain the same good-for-you bacteria that’s in yogurt. According to the website, “We chose a particular strain of probiotic for this product because of its unique ability to survive and reach the digestive system alive where it can provide you with the most health benefits. Pop Culture products are opening up new possibilities for consumers who want non-refrigerated probiotic-enhanced food products that can help regulate the digestive system. Our foods are a great way for consumers to get their daily dose of BC30 Probiotic, in a convenient, great tasting on-the-go food.”- Cool! :)

The company sent me some bars to try, like the 90 calorie yogurt fruit & nut bar. It has cranberries, flaxseed and almonds, and according to the wrapper, delivers TEN times the amount of live culture as yogurt. Wow! That’s a lot of bacteria! The bar is also all natural and enhanced with vitamins & minerals.

The bar itself is kinda tiny, a snack bar if you will, about the size of a computer mouse, but not as wide. There’s a sweet yogurty/icing coating on the bottom, that tastes like vanilla. There is also TONS of flaxseeds-these little brown guys are all over the bar! It has a sweet, berry taste to it, with a slight hazelnut/almond flavor as well.

Overall, a cute and efficient snack! I give it 4 stars- I would have liked if it was a little bigger, but then again, it’s only 90 calories. You could totally have 2 and be satisfied- that would be 8 grams of protein and 8 grams of fiber (and a TON of probiotics) if you ate two! I also like how it provides calcium and other vitamins/minerals, as well as those lovely bacteria that will help digestion! What I didn’t like was that there was refined sugar in the bar. I also didn’t really care for all the flaxseeds, but that’s  just personal preference. They also make oatmeal with probiotics- I’d like to try that!! :)

1 bar is 90 calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 15 carbohydrates, 4 grams of fiber, 7 grams of sugar, and 4 grams of protein.

Rolled Oats, Brown Rice Syrup, Soy Crisps (soy protein isolate, tapioca starch, rice flour, malt, salt), Crisp Rice (brown rice kernels, salt, barley malt extract), Yogurt Coating (sugar, palm kern oil, nonfat fry milk powder, yogurt powder [cultured whey & nonfat milk]), Hazelnuts, Cranberries, Almonds, Agave Syrup, Tapioca Syrup, Flax, Vegetable Glycerin, Acacia Gum, Gum Arabic, Soy Lecithin (an emulsifier), GanedenBC (Bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086).

Arico Almond Cranberry Cookies

Author: Healthnuttxo

Another fruity post- but this time on COOKIES!

Arico is a company that makes delicious gluten and casein free snacks, such as cookies and chips. They are also all natural, so you can have peace of mind while snacking on these yummy goodies!

The company sent me some products to try, like the Almond Cranberry Cookies. I was skeptical at first- I’m NOT a cranberry girl. I hate it at Thanksgiving (plus the jiggly consistency turns me off), and I really don’t like dried cranberries (too tart for me, and often leave a bitter aftertaste). I’ll take raisins anyday- but cranberries?

Well, I’m glad I tried this cookie! I took a bite and immediately noticed a nice blend of both almond and cranberry flavor. Normally when you get a cookie that has two flavors, one masks the other. But, both the almond and cranberry flavors were tasted equally- and deliciously! The cranberries were not too tart, but rather a “good” tart. There were little bits of almonds dispersed throughout that added a nice little crunch. The cookie part was actually buttery and rich tasting, and it also had a brown sugar flavor as well.

Overall, a yummy cookie! They are a bit small, maybe a little bigger than an Oreo-brand cookie, but still delicious nonetheless. I would give it 4 stars, and would probably buy them again. I also like that 2 cookies provides 3 grams of fiber and 15% daily calcium needs. Woop!

2 cookies is 100 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 15 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber 7 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of protein.

Flour base (organic brown rice whole grain flour, rice starch, rice protein, baking soda), organic cage free eggs, organic cane sugar, almonds, organic almond meal, organic agave nectar, dried cranberries (cranberries, sugar, sunflower/safflower oil), chicory extract, organic palm oil, calcium carbonate, organic sunflower oil, natural flavors, sea salt.

Funky Monkey Freeze Dried Fruit

Author: Healthnuttxo

I’m feeling fruity these week, obviously! (it’s the good weather, I think  it makes me craves fruit!)

So what better time then now to do a review of Funky Monkey Freeze Dried Fruit! This company has a line of all natural freeze dried fruit snacks which provide THREE servings of fruit per 1 oz bag! Here’s some info about the company which Jennifer at Funky Monkey Snacks provided me with.
“•          Funky Monkey Snacks have no added colors, flavors, sugars, or preservatives
•          Our special, proprietary manufacturing process provides for a crunchier texture vs. conventional freeze-drying techniques
•          We use full slices and pieces (not dices) of delicious, fresh fruit
•          Funky Monkey is made in Brazil using tropical fruits at the peak of freshness
•          Our products are gluten-free and are certified Kosher
•          One of our 7 flavors, Purple Funk, also includes açai, a berry from the Amazon that is viewed as the newest superfood
•          Bananamon, JiveALime, and Purple Funk are 100% organic! Pink Pineapple is 95% organic, Carnaval Mix is 70% organic. ”

Nice facts! Who knew these fruits came all the way from BRAZIL!?

I was super excited when I got my package in the mail from Funky Monkey, as I knew these were going to be unique and delicious. The flavors come in Applemon, Bananamon, Carnaval Mix, JiveALime, MangOJ, Pink Pineapple, and Purple Funk.

I decided to try Bananamon, MangOJ, and Pink Pineapple.

Bananamon- this flavor is bananas with cinnamon. I like how they were actual round slices of banana, not just wimpy little pieces. They were airy and crunchy, and COATED with cinnamon! The banana pieces were also sweet and delicious. A perfect snack by itself, or I had them paired with a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of milk (ahh, heaven).

MangOJ- this flavor is freezedried mango with orange juice. All I can say is woah! This one is definitely sweet and tangy, and keeps you wanting more! The orange juice was a perfect compliment to the mango. However the pieces did get stuck in my teeth pretty easy (the annoying part of freeze-dried fruit), but I ignored that for the totally awesome taste. Who knew they could make mango crunchy ?

Pink Pineapple- this one is freeze dried pineapple and guava. GUAVA! I have never eaten guava before until today- and it was certainly yummy! Mellow, yet sweet, it went nice with the  TANGY pineapple. The pineapple tasted just as if it was fresh, and really left an impression on my tongue. Good combination, yet again!

Overall, I give these 5 stars :)  They are certainly tasty, provide THREE servings of fruit per 1 oz bag, provide fiber, and are a great alternative to some other crispy/crunchy snacks. They are also preservative free, made with organic ingredients and have no added sugars. Definitely my new favorite freeze dried crunchy fruit snack (Bananamon was my favorite of the 3!)

Chobani Raspberry 0% Greek Yogurt

Author: Healthnuttxo

Let’s start off this post with a wow.
I just reviewed Chobani’s new strawberry banana greek yogurt, and thought it was quite tasty. So, I figured, why not also try the 0% raspberry flavor (which Chobani just happened to send me :P ) ?

I am happy to say, I have one of my new favorite flavors of yogurt!

This raspberry Chobani was, in a word, perfect. It gave me the sense that I was getting a fruit serving in with my yogurt- as in the flavor was REAL. Real raspberry flavor, no artificial flavors or dyes, and there were actual little bits and seeds dispersed thoughout the yogurt. The yogurt was a paleish pink (even without stirring), so you could tell it was bursting with flavor. Unlike the other fruit on the bottoms (peach, strawberry and bluberry), I found this Chobani was more like the strawberry banana flavor, and had the fruit dispersed and blended throughout, rather than the bulk of it on the bottom. It was sweet, but not overpowering at all. Of course, it was super creamy, but also refreshing. It was so nice to have a refreshing yogurt.  I almost wanted to have a glass of lemonade, grab my sunscreen/sunglasses and  hit the beach with this yogurt! (But, sadly, it was 7am and still a bit too nippy outside to break out the bikini). So, instead of that plan, I whipped out the last of my Cascadian Farm Dark Chocolate Almond granola and some fresh berries (with of course, a sploosh of whipped cream!) and I had yet another decadent, delicious and dessert-worthy breakfast (it really is the most important meal of the day, isn’t it? :) )

Overall, this Raspberry Chobani deserves 5 stars. It really is one of the best greek yogurts I have had. Surprising to me, because I’m not a *huge* raspberry fan- I often think they are a bit bitter and I prefer juicy strawberries or apples (Chobani- come out with an apple flavor- please!!). But definietely try this yogurt!

1 yogurt is 140 calories, 0 grams of fat, 22 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and 14 grams of protein.

Cultured Pasteurized Nonfat Milk, Evaporated Cane Juice, Raspberries, Natural Flavor, Locust Bean Gum, Pectin, Fruit and Vegetable Juice.

Oikos Caramel and Chocolate Greek Yogurt

Author: Healthnuttxo

Wait a second. Did you read correctly? Caramel and Chocolate GREEK YOGURT? And ORGANIC? No way.. it can’t be possible…

It is! ;) Oikos has now officially combined sinful & good-for-you. Their 2 new greek yogurt flavors, available in individual 4 packs, of Pure Pleasure Caramel and Chocolate are good for you, the earth, and your taste buds.

I was super excited when I finally located these in my grocery store, and picked up both without hesistation with the coupon Stonyfield provided me (Thanks, Kristina!). I couldn’t wait to dig in once I got home, and driving home was already thinking of how to try them. The caramel flavor with slices apples? popcorn? pears? The chocolate flavor with strawberries? pretzels? crushed up Annie’s bunny grahams? (okay, I admit, there was a few drool spots on my car seat from thinking of my delectable combinations…)

The greek yogurt part wasn’t as thick as traditional greek yogurt, but was more of a mixture of plain yogurt and greek put together. I didn’t mind that, in fact, I actually preferred it. I don’t really like my greek yogurt soooo thick when I’m eating it by itself. (However, if I’m eating granola with yogurt, I do like it thick). The yogurt part by itself was actually a little sweet, and then the pure pleasure was on the bottom.

I decided to try the caramel flavor first. It wasn’t THICK like on a caramel apple, but smooth and easy to stir with the yogurt. It had a nice sweetness to it, with a buttery, even brown-sugar taste.

Next was the chocolate. The bottom was a little bit thicker than chocolate syrup, and tasted sort of like that too. Although not as sweet as your typical chocolate syrup, it had a rich cocoa flavor, and was also smooth and delicious.

I didn’t mix mine completely, I prefer to take spoonfuls where half the spoon is yogurt, half the spoon is caramel/chocolate, and let the mixing take place in my mouth :) I think you can enjoy the sweet bottom, may it be caramel, chocolate or even fruit, better. These definietely get 4 1/2 stars. They are the perfect pick me up, with the perfect sweetness, and are a good size to pair with some fruit or granola for a snack or a light breakfast.

With one of my yogurts, I actually ate the whole top first, and then left the bottom to enjoy by itself! Which is why I think it’s a good thing these come in a 4 pack variety, I KNOW if it came in the 64 oz, or the BIG containers, all of you would just go straight for the caramel-ly or chocolatey goodness at the bottom, now wouldn’t you? :P

1 container is 110 calories, 0 grams of fat, 17 grams of carbohydrates, 0 fiber,  and 10 grams of protein.

Caramel- ORGANIC NONFAT MILK, ORGANIC SUGAR, NATURAL FLAVOR, PECTIN, CARRAGEENAN.  CONTAINS FIVE LIVE AND ACTIVE CULTURES INCLUDING L. ACIDOPHILUS, BIFIDUS, AND L. CASEI.

Chocolate- ORGANIC NONFAT MILK, ORGANIC SUGAR, ORGANIC COCOA, PECTIN, NATURAL FLAVOR, ORGANIC CAROB BEAN GUM.  CONTAINS FIVE LIVE AND ACTIVE CULTURES INCLUDING L. ACIDOPHILUS, BIFIDUS, AND L. CASEI.

Attune Chocolate Probiotic Wellness Bar

Author: healthnuttxo

That’s right. This is totally a CHOCOLATE review. But not just any chocolate- an actual HEALTHIER chocolate you can feel good about eating!

Attune Chocolate Probiotic Wellness Bars are exactly that- healthy, delicious, CHOCOLATE! Attune’s bars may have approximately 6.1 billion CFU’s in each bar, but those probiotics don’t alter the taste at all! These are the same probiotics you find in yogurt that help keep the digestive system running smoothly.

These bars are found in the refrigerated section of your grocery store to keep those probiotics alive & running. Each bar has 2 squares each, which are actually rather big (its a 20 gram bar). The bars also come in 7 flavors, chocolate crisp, mint chocolate, blueberry vanilla, dark chocolate, coffee bean dark chocolate, raspberry dark chocolate, and almond milk chocolate. I got to try the chocolate crisp,  and blueberry vanilla varieties.

Chocolate Crisp- ooh. This one reminds me of a Crunch bar. Smooth milk chocolate with little rice crisps embedded in each square. The smell of the bar is really delicious- just pure, smooth milk chocolate bliss. I wish they had a milk chocolate flavor without the crisps, as I prefer my chocolate plain, but it was still very good.

Blueberry Vanilla- I really enjoyed this one! Just the SMELL of the bar was delicious- a true blueberry scent! I was a little hesistant to try this one at first-but glad I did! It was a sweet white chocolate with a nice addition of vanilla and blueberry flavors (and actual blueberry pieces!). This one was my favorite of the two. I wonder what it would taste like melted and drizzled on some icecream or with yogurt (too bad I already ate my bar!!).

Overall, these get 4  stars. I love how Attune made chocolate a healthier indulgence, and didn’t blow calories or sugar content out of the park. I also like how they are a good source of calcium (and I got to skip my yogurt for the day without guilt knowing I ate some probiotics!). I found breaking off one square when a little sugar craving hit and letting it melt slowly in my mouth was just perfect.

Chocolate Crisp- Milk Chocolate Coating (evaporated cane juice, chocolate, cocoa butter, inulin, non fat milk, calcium carbonate, Anhydrous Milk Fat, soy lecithin [an emulsifier], vanilla), Organic Brown Rice Crisps (organic brown rice flour, organic molasses, calcium carbonate), Probiotic Cultures (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium lactis).

Blueberry Vanilla- White Chocolate Coating (cocoa butter, evaporated cane juice, yogurt powder, lactose, inulin, nonfat milk, calcium carbonate, soy lecithin [an emulsifier], vanilla), Organic Brown Rice Crisps (organic brown rice flour, organic molasses, calcium carbonate), Freeze Dried Blueberry Pieces, Probiotic Cultures (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Bifidobacterium lactis), Natural Flavor.

PopChips!

Author: healthnuttxo

What are Popchips, you ask?
Aside from delicious, Popchips are chips, but they aren’t fried or baked, but rather, according to the website, made with “wholesome potatoes, add a little heat and pressure, and pop! It’s a chip”. They are also relatively low in fat, are all natural, and come in 7 delicious flavors. They are the perfect compliment to your lunch, or eaten directly out of the bag. You can “pop” ;) them in your purse and take them on the go with the conveinent 100 calorie bag portion too.
I was sent a few of the single serving bags courtesy of PopChips! company (thanks guys!).

Each chip is round and flat in shape, and has the consistency of a Lay’s Potato Chip and a rice cake mixed together. They also have a nice CRUNCH to them which I really enjoyed. PERFECT for putting on a sandwich (like tuna or egg salad! Yum!). In the 100 calorie bag portion, you actually get a decent amount. Not like those “100 calorie packs” where you get, like, 4 of whatever you get. *cough cough* has anyone noticed you only get TWO or THREE “mini muffins” in the 100 calorie packs? What is up with THAT *cough cough*

Anyway- :D …without further a due, let’s see how each flavor ranks up!

Original- I definietly like the original. Hits the spot when you craving strictly potato-ey flavors. There’s also a good amount of salt on each chip, and really, what’s a potato chip without some salty goodness? :)

Cheddar- oooh. These are good. It’s a good cheddar cheese flavor, it sort of reminded me of macaroni & cheese rather than Cheetos cheese flavor. The cheese flavor isn’t too strong, and you can definetely still taste potato flavors, but these are a really good alternative to some other cheezy snacks which leave fake orange residue on your fingers..But we’ll save that rant for another day! ;)

Barbeque- Oh how I loooove Barebeque flavors! This was more of a sweet barbeque flavor, and I definietly tasted a smokey flavor mixed with a brown sugar/honey flavor. It has a wee bit of heat to it too, and left a little burn on my tongue. There was a strong onion/garlic/salty flavor that mixed nicely with the sweeter tastes. It was sort of like a transformation in my mouth- sweet at first bite, then the spice hits!

Sour Cream & Onion- Okay, Who took my PopChips! and replaced them with Lay’s Sour Cream & Onion chips? They taste IDENTICAL- and that’s a good thing!! These are my favorite (with the barbeque flavor) by far. Seriosuly- I bit into these, adn thought, where on earth is the fat? HOW is it so low? These are BURSTING with flavor, and have a nice onion/garlic taste with a wee bit of parsley. Just make sure you pop an altoid after eating these ;)

Sea Salt & Vinegar- I had some help with these. I’m not really a fan of vinegar, I don’t even like the smell when we dye eggs at Easter. So, I went to my aunt,  and she gave them two thumbs up. I tried one and I thought they were very salty with a very strong, bitter vinegar flavor. But hey, if that’s your style, go for it!

Overall, 4 stars. These are really good, and I’ll definitely buy them again. I’ll also feel less guilty serving these at parties rather than Doritos or Lay’s because they are all natural, lower in fat than other chips, and don’t have any trans fats. I also like how the portion size is almost double of a normal portion for chips. You get about 20 instead of the typical 10-11 chips per serving, and for a few less calories!

1 oz of each flavor (about 19-20 chips) is around 120 calories, 4 grams of fat, 20 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.

Each flavor is made with all natural ingredients. The following is just for the original. If you’d like to see all the flavors, click here.

Natural Potato Ingredients (potato flour, potato starch), Safflower Oil and/or Sunflower Oil, Rice Flour, Sea Salt, Soy Lecithin.

*I added a GIVEAWAY to this post- scroll down for more info!!*

Here’s a special pink post dedicated toward Breast Cancer! Musselman company sent me a very nice gift basket with a GIANT bottle of Natural Applesauce (48oz), some recipe cards, and a Pink ribbon magnet (that I immediately placed on my car :) ), along with a bunch of pink fuzzies (those paper things that protect the package…haha. I loved em!) to show their care for Breast Cancer.

Musselman’s is having a big promotion during the  month of January and, are donating ten cents to the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) for every package of Musselman’s Natural Apple Sauce that is bought during the month of January. Ten cents may not seem like a lot, but it really is, and every bit makes a difference. This money will be given to the NBCF to help provide education and mammograms to those in need.

Here is a link featuring Peggy Fleming with her experience of Breast Cancer, and how Musselman’s is helping.

So the natural applesauce is quite tasty, and tastes wholesome and pure. You can tell it’s made from the real deal- crisp, sweet apples and only apples. It’s  not too sweet, and has a smooth feel, but still has a little texture to it (from all the grinded up apples, of course!!).  It’s how natural applesauce should taste-without any added sugar, corn syrup, colors, dyes or preservatives.

1/2 cup is 50 calories, 0 grams of fat, 13 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, and 0 grams protein.

Applesauce is also a good swap for oils and butter in baking, and adds mild sweetness to dishes. I’m an applesauce fiend .  I eat it almost as much as I eat peanut butter :) :) . Seriously, I eat it on waffles, with my Amy’s Enchiladas, mixed with yogurt, pretty much every where! So, here’s a yummy recipe I was sent (with some of my own modifications!!) to use this delicious applesauce.

- 3 egg whites (or 2 eggs, if you prefer)

4. Sift together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt into large bowl.
5.In another large bowl,  whisk eggs and brown sugar. Stir in applesauce and melted butter until mixture is smooth.
