Quest Nutrition Cookies & Cream Quest Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

QUEST BARS!

I have been a fan of these bars for almost 2 years when I got a box to try from the company. Since then, I have been hooked. They seem to almost have blown up in popularity, and well deserved…these things are delicious and perfect when you are on a strict diet and need something high in fiber, low in sugar, and high in protein.

I’m sure almost everyone has heard of the new flavor of Quest Bars that came out recently- Cookies & Cream!! I got a free box of these bars to try, and I was pretty excited about it.

I mean come on…look at this bar. You can see “cookie crumbs” and chunks of white creamy “chocolate”!

First lets talk nutrition. This bar is GLUTEN FREE!, 180 calories, 7 grams fof fat (3 of which are saturated), 310 mg of sodium, 22 grams of carbohydrate (17 of which are fiber), 1 gram of sugar, 2 grams of Erythritol (sugar alcohol), and 21 g of protein.

I use Quest bars as a snack, as I usually eat 3 meals and 2 snacks, or I’ll eat half when I have those bad hunger pains that just will NOT relent. The nutrition facts are quite awesome- not TOO high in fat, nice amount of fiber (which is ideal for me since I am a Diabetic for glucose control) and only 1 gram of sugar.

Okay, that’s all cool but how does it taste?
The bar is honestly, amazing. It’s my new favorite flavor. It’s chewy and dense, sweet but not overly sweet. The white chocolate chunks are creamy and have a vanilla flavor to them, reminiscent of the cream in an Oreo cookie. The cookie crumbs scattered in the bar is what won me over. Crunchy and tastes very similar to a cookie!! When you find a part of the bar with a huge piece of cookie crumbs or the white chocolate it is like hitting lotto— cookies & cream lotto 😉

Overall, I love these. I always order directly from the site, because I feel like they are freshest and softest from the website. These get 5 stars from me. I honestly can’t complain about a thing.

Q- What is your favorite protein bar? Or what is your favorite Quest Bar flavor? Leave me a comment below 🙂

MHP Power Pak High Protein Pudding

Author: Healthnuttxo

It may be of no surprise that I am a complete healthy food and fitness nut. Egg whites, protein powders, vegetables, whole grains, and peanut butter are staples of my diet, as well as spinning, free weights, and kickboxing as my main forms of exercise. Lately I’ve upped the exercise intensity so I also had to increase the amount of protein and calories.

Let’s just say eating 6-11 egg whites a day gets pricy, and, well, monotonous. As some kind of change up, I went browsing for some high protein foods, such as bars, shakes and other goodies. Online, I found the  MHP Power Pak High Protein Pudding which I definitely wanted to try. Pudding? 30 grams of protein? Low sugar? Low carbs? COUNT ME IN!

It was a bit pricy, at $2.99 a can, but I figured it was worth a try. I opened up the can and saw a thick, light brown colored pudding. It looked a bit “moussy”, but no doubt, it was thick and creamy.

I took a spoonful. It had a good chocolate flavor, and was mildly sweet but not sugary tasting at all. It did have that chocolate protein powder/shake taste to it, but not too overpowering. It was very thick and creamy, which I enjoyed, as it gave it some sustenance. I wouldn’t say it was WOW this is amazing! But it definitely wasn’t bad at all. I found it was a little too much by itself, so I mixed in some Lite Cool Whip. And…

What a great idea! It was really good and the mild sweetness of the Cool Whip went well with the thickness and chocolate-y flavor of the pudding. I may even crumble some graham cracker crumbs (or Annie’s Bunny Grahams!) on top next time for a twist on pudding pie 🙂

Overall, 4 stars. Would love to buy more of these, just so dang expensive! However, love that it’s low in sugar, low in carbs, high in calcium, and has 30 grams of protein for a can! NICE!!! I may have to splurge and buy, oh I don’t know, a dozen more or so… 😉

Organic Naturally More Peanut Butter

Author: Healthnuttxo

Calling all Peanut Butter Lovers… you are definitely going to enjoy this post! 😉

Naturally More is a brand that makes both peanut butter and almond butter, but better. They make “What Peanut Butter/Almond Butter Should Be!”, meaning these nut butters are enhanced with special goodies to keep you healthy, but at the same time are still all natural and delicious.

For the Organic Naturally More peanut butter, it is higher in protein, higher in fiber, and lower in fat than standard peanut butter. It also contains no trans fats, is fortified with flaxseed and flax oil, and has no other additives. I was super excited when I recieved this in the mail from Naturally More as we all know how much I adore peanut butter- this one HAD to be a winner!

And it sooooooo is! When you open the jar, the oil is on top, so I reccommend stirring it the day before you actually want to try it and letting it sit in the fridge for a bit. The next day, I took out my jar and was happy to see it was a bit stiffer, not as runny, but still having that ooey-gooey peanut butter consistency 🙂

Honestly- the company had me fooled. Tastes like good ol’ peanut butter to me. Creamy and just slightly sweet, it has a nice, peanutty flavor. Perfect for PB&J’s, peanut butter & bananas, and one of my favorites, spread of a slice of organic chocolate cake (*drool*). What is different about this peanut butter is that there are itty-bitty flaxseeds in it, so it has a bit of crunch to it. Different-yes. Weird- a little, but I liked it. It was sort of like eating crunchy peanut butter, but without the HUGE peanut chunks.

Overall, I give this peanut buttah’ 5 stars. I love that it’s organic, high in fiber & protein, and even lower in fat & calories than regular peanut butter. Absolutely delicious, and it is now in rotation with my other favorite plain peanut butter, Smuckers All Natural Peanut Butter. I have over 30 jars of nut butters at my house, but sometimes I just want good ol’ PEANUT BUTTER- no iffs, ands, or butts. This one is definitely in rotation now!

1 serving (2 tbsp) is 170 calories, 11 grams of fat, 8 carbohydrates, 4 grams of fiber and 9 grams of protein.

Organic Peanuts, Organic Flax Seed, Organic Dehydrated Cane Juice. <— yay for short ingredient lists!

Now, I’m more of a granola bar kinda girl over protein and “energy” bars , because usually they are filled with too much protein (at least in my opinion for what I’m looking for in a bar), too much saturated fat, and too much sugar. However, PowerBar has a line of products that fit everyone’s needs. They have ones for pre workout, recovery/post workout, ones with lower sugar, etc, and all of them have all natural ingredients.

I decided to try the Performance Energy Line with a coupon I was provided with by the company for a free bar- According to the website, here’s some info about this bar (Chocolate Peanut Butter flavor) …

  • Provides more energy to muscles with C2MAX
  • Contains 200mg sodium, a key electrolyte
  • The original energy bar
  • Low in fat, with 8–9g of protein per bar
  • No preservatives or artificial flavors”
  • These bars come in several flavors, and you know me, I chose the Chocolate Peanut Butter. Because, reallly, when has the combination ever failed?

So, moving on to the bar. It’s 2.29 ounces, so about average, I’d say the size of a  Nutri-grain bar, but a little longer. It isn’t your typical bar, however. The texture and appearance is chewy and easy to pull apart. It was pretty dense, and had “crispy” rice pieces in it. It was definietely sweet. The chocolate flavor overpowers the peanut butter flavor, and it takes on an almost coffee-ish taste. But, I liked it! It was tasty and I  actually enjoyed it. I DID need a glass of water to drink though while eating. The sodium was a tad high (200 mg) and the combination of chocolate and peanut butter just begged my mouth for some aqua.

Overall, I enjoyed this and will probably buy it again. I give it 4 stars, because it did as it promised. It provided me with a ton of energy- I actually got one of the best workouts despite the fact it was 630 in the morning!   The only thing I didn’t like was that it lacked fiber, so it isn’t a good “meal replacement” bar. But, that’s not really what it’s intended for and I think if they increased the fiber too much, it would be harder to digest. I also wish there was a bit more peanut butter flavor in it-but still yummy 🙂

1 bar is 240 calories, 3.5 grams of fat ( 1 saturated), 44 caarbohydrates (26 sugars), 1 gram of fiber, and 9 grams of protein. You also get 25% calcium needs!

C2 MAX CARBOHYDRATE BLEND (ORGANIC EVAPORATED CANE JUICE SYRUP, MALTODEXTRIN, FRUCTOSE, DEXTROSE), OAT BRAN, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, RICE CRISPS (MILLED RICE, RICE BRAN, ROSEMARY EXTRACT), BROWN RICE FLOUR, PEANUT FLOUR, NATURAL FLAVOR, NONFAT MILK, AND 2% OR LESS OF: PEANUT BUTTER, CHOCOLATE, ALKALIZED COCOA, CANOLA OIL, VEGETABLE GLYCERIN, SALT, ALMOND BUTTER, MINERALS: CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, POTASSIUM PHOSPHATE, FERROUS FUMARATE (IRON), VITAMINS: ASCORBIC ACID (VITAMIN C), VITAMIN B6 HYDROCHLORIDE, RIBOFLAVIN (VITAMIN B2), THIAMINE MONONITRATE (VITAMIN B1).

Oikos Organic Greek Yogurt with Honey

    Author: healthnuttxo

Stonyfield Farm is my “go to” brand for yogurt. They have made a branch, so to speak, of organic greek yogurt, Oikos Organic Greek Yogurts. I like greek yogurt usually, but it’s bland tasting, and needs some flavor in my opinion, may it be fruit or granola or SOMETHING. Oikos has flavored yogurts, with honey, vanilla, strawberry and blueberry. I decided to use my free coupon provided generously by Stonyfield Farm and bought the Honey flavor.

So, 3 o clock rolls around and i am famished. I had a good workout at the gym today, so i’ve been craving protein all day long. Instead of my normal snack, i grabbed the Oikos Honey Organic Greek Yogurt out of my fridge. Greek yogurt is thicker than regular yogurt, and has almost double the protein. Opening my container, it was greek yogurt on top, honey on the bottom. Without mixing, the yogurt part tastes sweet. It’s really thick and creamy, with a sour cream like consistency. It’s slightly tangy, but the honey’s sweetness “leaked”, so it’s not too tart like plain greek yogurt. Onto the honey part, i know what your thinking. Honey? Isn’t it too thick? Nope. This isn’t your straight up “honey” from a jar- it’s more liquidy and has a jelly-like consistency. It’s almost like honey applesauce on the bottom. By itself it also isn’t as sweet as PURE honey, so it’s not overpowering. It’s a nice compliment to the greek yogurt. I didn’t completely mix mine, but i would just take a scoop and half my spoon would be honey, half yogurt. Delicious!

So the Pros & Cons for this snack? Well, it’s higher in protein, so it’s more satisfying. It hit the spot where my hunger was roaring this afternoon. It also has no fat, but tastes like it’s made from whole milk. Yummy! My only complaint is they added sugar AND honey. Why both? Shouldn’t honey be enough? And, it’s slightly lower in calcium than regular yogurt (15% as compared to my usual 25-30%). Otherwise- this yogurt is a winner in my book. It’s a nice change from other flavored yogurts. In fact- i went to the store today and bought another flavor-strawberry! (I will blog about that flavor soon!)

1 cup is 120 calories, 0 grams of fat, 18 grams of carbohydrates, 0 grams of fiber, and 13 grams of filling protein.
