Crumbs Raspberry Hamentashen

Author: Healthnuttxo

Yes, I had no idea what it was when I bought it. So if you know, props to you. I was told by a friend that it was a Jewish cookie, and to this moment that’s all I still really know about it. (So please, if you know anything, let me know!)

Regardless, amongst all the heavily frosted cupcakes and cookies available at Crumbs, I picked the Hamentashen. I didn’t want an overload of sugar, but I wanted something sweet and delicious. I picked up one of these for a little over 2 dollars each, and got the Raspberry flavor.

When I picked the Hamentashen, the lady behind the counter was confused. She asked why I purchased such a “grown up” cookie amongst all the cookies and cupcakes. Uhoh. Would this taste good??

The cookie basically had a “cookie/dry” part and a fruity/jam-like center. When I first tasted it, it reminded me of pie. And…I LOVE PIE.

The cookie part was crunchy on the outer edges, but as you get closer to the middle it was super soft, like the inner pie crust. It was buttery tasting and mildly sweet, and kind of reminded me of a butter/shortbread cookie.

The fruit on the inside, not scarce at all, was smooth and sweet, and also very fresh. I was afraid raspberry would be overly tart, but it wasn’t. It had a mild bit of tartness, and that’s it. AND, there was a lot of fruit filling!  To prove it, here’s a little pic

Overall, yes, it’s not a SUPER sugary cookie, but it was rather big (about size of my hand) and really good! I’ve already bought a couple more after eating my first one, and they do not disappoint! And, only 110 calories! Which is awesome given the 500-600+ calorie cupcakes/treats there!

4.5 stars

What’s your FAVORITE holiday cookie or cookie in general ( besides chocolate chip!)? I really love oatmeal raisin 🙂

Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred Level 2

Author: Healthnuttxo

This review is of Level 2 of Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred. I already reviewed level 1 HERE.

Level 2 was the same format as level 1, but with more intensity. As stated on the DVD box, there are “Three 6-minute Circuits Featuring Jillian’s 3-2-1 Interval System: 3 Minutes of Strength, 2 Minutes of Cardio, 1 Minute of Abs”.

What I noticed this time is that my core and balance were challenged a lot more than in level 1. There were strength moves that required standing on one foot, as well as a good deal of plank work. The strength moves were much more challenging than Level 1, and I felt a significant burn even using 5 pound weights for a few moves. One move toward the end, which was a simultaneous chair squat while raising dumbbells in a V formation was particularly challenging, and the first time I did it I took a brief rest during that segment.

The cardio moves also were bumped up a notch, and I felt as if I burned more calories during these cardio moves than the ones in level 1.  They were fun, yet speedy, and helped the DVD progress quickly.

Lastly, the abs, I found to be fair. They were not super challenging, but definitely not super basic either. My lower abs got a good workout, and I felt pretty satisfied.

I almost wish Jillian Michael’s 30 Day Shred had 4 minutes strength, 3 minutes cardio and 2 minutes abs, because I feel like doing the video just once isn’t enough for me. I ended up doing the Level 2 segment twice, as I did Level 1 the first time I tried it, for me to feel like I had a more complete workout. But then again, I’m an avid exerciser, and I live for the intensity. My family and friends swear I’m crazy, since I crave the intensity of exercise, and maybe I am, but whatever floats your boat right? =)

Overall, Level 2 of Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred is my favorite so far, and I can’t wait to try Level 3 !

Have you tried Level 2 of Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred? What are your thoughts?

Marie Callender’s Cheesy Chicken & Rice

Author: Healthnuttxo

I  went to the store the other day to pick up some random things, including some frozen entrees for when I dont have time (or more likely, don’t feel like) cooking. I saw this meal, Marie Callender’s Cheesy Chicken & Rice, and knew I had to give it a try, especially since I liked the last Marie Callender meal I tried. The ingredients weren’t too bad, so I put it in my cart and bought it.

I was excited to try this. I picture a gooey, cheesy entree, with huge chunks of chicken and pieces of broccoli scattered throughout. Luckily, after I cooked it for the designated time, it looked pretty much as I had imagine it.

However, when I pictured cheesy, I pictured more of like a stringy, gooey cheese. In this meal, it was more like a cheese sauce, or something that had the consistency of a cheese dip that comes from a jar. But don’t get me wrong – it still looked delicious. And let me tell you, it was a long 8 or 9 minutes I waited for this entree to be done including rest time. Sort of like when I bake cookies – longest 8-10 minutes of my life.

So, moving on, I tried the pieces of chicken first. They were juicy and chewy, but also a tad salty. There was a good amount of them in the entree, which I liked. I think this help contribute to the 24 grams of protein in this meal, which made me and my gym-worked muscles quite happy.

Next up, the broccoli was tender, but not soggy, so it was perfect for me. I happy to be quite a fan of broccoli, so the fact that this was included in the meal made me happy on the spot.

Lastly, the rice was fluffy and delicious. There was white rice and some grains of wild rice. It thickened up with the sauce quite nicely, which had a cheddar flavor. The cheese sauce was actually a bit of a let down, as it had a bit of an artificial taste to it. I was expecting a real cheese flavor, and it had more of a cheese-from-a-can or jar flavor. It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t my favorite.

Overall, pretty good. I would eat this again. I loved how it was high in protein, but it was VERY high in sodium for me, 1000 mg?! A bit more than I’d like in one meal.  All in all, I would give this 4 stars

What’s your favorite thing that’s CHEESY? I would have to argue that crunchy cheese doodles are one of my favorite cheesy things =)
