Sabre Personal Alarm and Door Stop Alarm

Author: Healthnuttxo

A non-food review today, but important all the same because safety is KEY! Sabre has a line of products aimed at your safety in mind.  From pepper spray to home security, Sabre has you covered.

They sent me 2 of their products to review, the Personal Alarm, and the door alarm.

Let’s review the Personal Alarm first. I think this is great for those who commute to work, travel alone, go jogging, or even just to keep on your bag or purse. Unfortunately, you never know when a predator may attack, and if you have some sort of alarm to alert for help, it may help keep you safe.

The personal alarm is tiny, fits in my palm, and has a durable, sturdy clip to attach to your bag or purse strap. It is intended to be weather proof as well. I travel a lot for work, alone, and I thought it would be a great thing to have on me, especially because I travel in some not-so-safe areas.

It has a light feature to ensure that if you do need to use the alarm, people can see you! It has 3 modes, a fast flash, slow flash and a mode that allows the light to be always on, that you can control with a push of a button.

Now, for the alarm feature. Don’t mess around with this, it is LOUD!!!! My Dad and I were experimenting with it, to see how it worked, and he hit the alarm button and we were floored how loud it is! It is 120 dB, which is extremely loud, and definitely louder than I imagined for such a tiny device! I think this is great, because even in a time of emergency, a quick push of the button activates a loud alarm with flashing of light, to hopefully attract someone toward you for safety.

Here’s a pic of the personal alarm below, next to the door stop alarm.

Which…speaking of, let’s review the Door Stop Alarm.

While I do not have an immediate use for this in my home, I think it’s great if you live alone, in an apartment, a dorm room, or hey, even if you do live with your family and they aren’t home, you can always slide this under your door to be alerted of anyone breaking into your home!

It also has 120 dB of sound, a pretty sturdy grip so it stays rooted to the floor and helps prevent the door. I turned the switch on in the back, placed it under my door, and let my Dad try to open it. It immediately stopped the door from opening, no sliding of the actual device, and alarm went off as well. Again…extremely loud!!!

Overall, some great products. I cannot believe how loud the devices were given how small they are, but this is great when it comes to safety. I will definitely use the handheld device for times I go jogging alone, walk my dog at night, or even just traveling in and out of the city. It’s discrete and I can easily clip it to my backpack.

Check out SABRE and all their other products!

You are eating the healthy food…but are you properly digesting it? Dr. Liz Cruz, a gastroenterologist, is the creator of Everyday Enzymes, a natural supplement designed to help you digest and absorb all the healthy nutrients.

According to the pamphlet I received, this supplement helps support the digestion of protein, fats and carbs, as well as aiding in digestive issues such as reflux, gas, and nausea. It may also boost the immune system, and can be given to children, pets, and during pregnancy! (But please, always check with your personal doctor).

The label lists an enzyme blend of various enzymes, which thanks to my medical & nutrition background I understand, and can help decode for you!:

Amylase–> enzyme that digests starch (carbohydrates)
Protease –> enzyme that digests proteins
Lipase –> enzyme that digests fats
Cellulase –> enzyme that digests cellulose, an indigestible carbohydrate, such as in Celery or Broccoli
Invertase –> this one I had to research, but it is an enzyme made by yeast that helps break down sucrose, or sugar.
Diastase –> this is basically more Amylase
Lactase –> enzyme that breaks down lactose, in milk

+ has some Lactobacillus acidophilus & Bifidobacterium longum, aka probiotics for gut health.

You are instructed to take 2-3 capsules per meal or as instructed by your Doctor (or PA!) The label states you can also pull apart the capsules and mix it with food.

The pills are relatively small and easy to swallow. I had them in the morning or with spicy or higher fat meals, as I usually feel a little “ill” after eating too much fat (I love you avocado, but you hurt my belly every time!).

Overall, I am pleased. I can’t quite explain it, but my stomach didn’t have that “heavy” feeling after bigger meals. I didn’t have any adverse effects, stomach upset, nausea, etc. while taking the pills. While I can’t comment on my energy levels (because I sleep 4-5 hours a night…), I do feel I felt generally “better”. Placebo? Maybe. But maybe not. Regardless, I’ll take it.

I recommend giving them a try, especially if you suffer from some occasional heart burn or indigestion (remember –> always get any supplement cleared by your doctor or PA, and never self diagnose a medical problem, always get it checked out first!)

4.5 star

Eat Enlightened Low Calorie Ice Cream

Author: Healthnuttxo

I’ve seen Enlightened Ice cream pop up on the freezer shelves…always curious. Could it taste good? Surely 80-100 calories seems absurd for a serving of ice cream that has flavor… Well…much to my pleasant surprise.

Enlightened has a wide variety of low calorie ice cream that has a decent amount of protein per serving and relatively low in sugar per serving. It is sweetened with erythritol, a sugar alcohol, and made with rBST free milk. For example, the Sea Salt Caramel has 80 calories a serving, 1.5 grams of fat, 5 grams of sugar and 7 grams of protein This is an absolute dream for ice cream lovers…because who can really eat JUST half a cup!?!?

NOW–> for these ice creams, you have to let them sit on the counter for 10 minutes or so. They are low in sugar, and sugar is often what keeps the ice cream soft from the freezer. So let it thaw a bit, then enjoy!

So naturally, I tried the PB CHIP first. Because…I am the peanut butter fiend 🙂

It was UNREAL. Creamy and sweet, with PLENTY of little chocolate chips that were sweet/semi sweet in flavor. Had a vanilla-peanut butter flavor, but honestly couldn’t get over the fact it was low in sugar and how creamy it was.  I finished this pint in 2 days. An easy 5 star.

Next up, Brownies and Cookie Dough. This was a chocolate based ice cream with pieces of brownie and cookie dough bites scattered throughout. The ice cream itself was creamy, with a milk chocolate flavor. Sweet but not “sugary” sweet where it hurts your teeth. The cookie dough pieces were spot on- tasted as if it was straight from the bowl of homemade cookie dough, with the soft consistency you expect. The brownie bites were chewy, sweet and fudgy and just went perfectly with the ice cream. The best part is…there was plenty  of brownie and cookie dough bites in the ice cream. No scrimping here.

Honestly–> another 5 star from me.

Last up, Sea Salt Caramel. I was already excited to try this based on the fact I love the other two. The Ice cream itself is, again, nice and creamy, with a pretty strong caramel flavor. The caramel itself you can tell is not that sugary sweet caramel, but has more of a muted flavor (probably because it’s not loaded with sugar…). However, it’s still pretty good. There are large swirls of caramel in the ice cream, which are sweet, but has that sugar alcohol type flavor. If you’ve eaten enough sugar free/low sugar products, you know what I am talking about.

It was almost a bit too rich for me, too “sweet”, and I wish it had some sort of saltier or crunchy component. But hey, to each his own. 4 star for me.

OVERALL, I am a fan! I can’t wait to try the other flavors. I’ve seen them at Target, Stop n Shop, and other supermarkets. I will 100% buy the PB chip or Brownie & Cookie dough in the future. A definite try for those who love ice cream but may be watching their diet…or those who want an excuse to eat something sweet with some protein in it 🙂

Here’s the nutritional facts for the PB Chip — however, most of the flavors are similar, but NOT exactly the same. Visit the website for exact nutritional information!

INSPYR GEAR socks

Author: Healthnuttxo

INSPYR Gear has a ton of both functional and motivating fitness gear. The socks in particular rock! They have a cute, “empowerment message” on every pair, reinforced heel and toe, arch support, and come in GREAT colors.

They are 70% cotton, 20% nylon and 10% spandex.

They sent me a few pairs of their socks and they definitely don’t disappoint!

The socks are soft and thick, and sweat wicking. I wore the calf-high ones to the gym and worked up a good sweat, and my feet stayed super comfy. The arch support felt great on my feet and had absolutely no rubbing or discomfort. I also liked that they were tight but not TOO tight, as I find some calf-high socks are more on the compression-like side of socks, which I am not always looking to wear.

How cute are the messages!!! I love a little extra empowerment. We should be supporting each other at the gym, races, fitness, Crossfit, powerlifting, etc. Whatever you do, support each other!

I will say the shorter ankle socks, which are “one size fits all”, are a little big on me (I am a size 6). However, they aren’t so big that it’s an issue, they just run a little high. However, that makes them a great fit for when I have to wear a boot or some higher shoe for when I need additional comfort and support.

Overall, give this company a try! They have some great stuff!

Sparkling Ice had a promotion the past few months with a “Mystery Fruit Flavor” with #WhatTheFlavorSweeps, in which the brand has finally revealed the flavor is… PASSIONFRUIT PUNCH!

This drink is naturally flavored sparking water, with antioxidants, vitamins and ZERO sugar! Caffeine free, with zeros across the board for calories, carbs, sodium and sugar. It has some Vitamin A, Niacin, B12, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin D, B6, and Biotin.  Sparking Ice has 16 other flavors, which are all lightly carbonated, low in sugar and calories, and naturally flavored. You can read more about them here.

So how does it taste?

Delicious! I made sure to chill it in the fridge for a few hours to get the full experience.

Refreshing, crisp and light in flavor. Lightly carbonated, which I actually prefer, because I hate when a drink is SO fizzy that it “hurts” a bit drinking, and almost causes some indigestion.

It was lightly fruity, almost tasted like a cross between peach, pineapple and berry flavors. AKA the perfect summer drink! (I also think this would be great mixer for alcoholic beverages, for those of you who want a low calorie treat AND are of the legal age 🙂 )

Make sure to give this new flavor a try if you see it in store!

Peanuts are a problem these days- it seems allergies are very common, and places like schools and hospitals have become completely peanut free as a result.

Gluten is another problem. It is present in MANY foods, and can cause distress to those who are gluten intolerant or have Celiac’s disease.

In comes Rule Breaker snacks, who have developed  peanut free, nut free, gluten free and vegan snacks that are school SAFE! These snacks are made with chick peas, so they also provide a good source of protein and fiber. The company sent me the P’nutter Chocolate Chip Blondie to try.

It has 240 calories for one piece, with 10 grams of fat, (4.5 saturated), 33g of carbs, 3 grams of fiber, 13 grams of sugar and 3 grams of protein. So even with chickpeas as the first ingredient, I wasn’t super thrilled with the nutrition, but if it’s intended to be a treat, then I think it’s ok.

I had it both right out of the package and microwaved for some added goodness. Here is what it looked like:

Okay, Okay…but how was it?

It was…good. You can definitely taste the chickpea flavor, as it is predominant throughout the blondie. So if you’re not a chickpea fan, you may not like this. The mini chocolate chips add a nice touch, just the right amount of sweetness, and balance out the chickpea flavor. Not sure what the white parts of the bar are….white chocolate? They were sweet and also added a nice touch with a mild vanilla flavor.

I actually recommend microwaving it and then waiting a minute or two and eating it. The chocolate chips get all melty and the texture shifts from more dense and soft to slightly on the crunchier side. The bar itself has a sweeter feel to it, and is rich which is partly from the beans but I also believe from “no-nut butter” listed.

Overall, I think it’s a good snack, especially for kids who may feel they are left out from parties, etc. because they cannot eat the same snacks as everyone else if they have nuts, gluten etc. in it. It has a rich flavor, but is sweet enough that kids and adults can enjoy.

Overall, 3.5 star.

Theraplex sent me some skin products to try– normally I am hesitant to try new skin products. I have terribly sensitive skin, everything makes my skin blotchy or break out, but I was told these products are dermatologist recommended and accepted by the National Eczema Association, so I was definitely more on board to give them a try.

Let’s begin:

Hydrolotion Daily Skin Moisturizer– this one is hypoallergenic, preservative, paragon, lanolin, gluten and fragrance free. The retail price is $16.50 for one bottle. It is intended to be gentle and ideal for normal-dry, sensitive skin, or skin that may be prone to eczema.

I liked this product for it’s versatility, I used it on my face right after the shower, but then also on my arms, abdomen, legs. It isn’t super thick, but rather light weight and non-greasy. My legs tend to be dry, so I think it was lacking a tiny bit in the moisture department, as I felt I needed to apply more than I would normally with my other lotion. However, no skin reactions, breakouts, nothing. I think it’s great for face and arms, but for my hands/feet/legs I would need something a little stronger.

ClearLotion Moisturizer- and that’s where this product comes in! Again, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, preservative/paraben/lanolin/gluten/steroid/fragrance free. This is an emollient oil moisturizer that comes in a spray bottle. It is best applied to damp skin after the shower to lock in moisture. The retail value is $18.50 for one 8 oz spray pump bottle.

When used alone, I thought it was decent, but feels a little odd to be applying oil to my skin after the shower. It may feel “oily” (obviously) for 10-15 minutes, but then that feeling resolves and skin is left soft. What I did was spray my legs/arms with it immediately post shower, let it dry for a few minutes, then add a few pumps of the daily skin moisturizer, and was soft and moisturized all day.

Emollient Moisturizer- now for the severely dry skin, in comes a super rich moisturizer. This one can be used for psoriasis, eczema, ichthyosis and xerosis, as well as those super dry areas like elbows and heels. Retail value is $21.00. Again, hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, preservative/paraben/lanolin/gluten/steroid/fragrance free. My advice is to use LESS than you think you need. It is SUPER rich, and you only need a tiny dab of it for both of your hands. You just need to really work it in and let it dry, using too much will leave a greasy/sticky feel. However, it was great for those cracked knuckles or rough heels.

lastly, the Gentle Cleanser. I really liked this! It is recommended for sensitive skin, and it is an everyday cleanser that leaves skin feeling fresh without being dry. It is paraben/lanolin/steroid and gluten free, and costs about $12.00 a bottle. It left my skin feeling clean and did not dry it out. My face is very acne prone, and I noticed NO new breakouts, and actually got a compliment that my skin was looking better just yesterday 🙂

Overall, I am a fan of these products.  I will not lie, I went and purchased 2 bottles of the cleanser and hydrolotion online because I am running out of product and like the way it was gentle yet effective on my skin. I definitely recommend these if you have sensitive skin, are acne prone, eczema prone, or just looking for a new cleanser/skin products that aren’t filled with a ton of chemicals. A solid 4.5 stars across the board from me.

Thunderbird Real Food Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

WELL sorry it’s been a while guys…life got a little hectic the past month but I’m back, never fear 8)

Coming at you with some Real Food Bars by Thunderbird. They sent me 4 varieties to try, all vegan, no added sugar, and grain/gluten free. They are nut, seed and date based. As an added benefit, they are also paleo certified. (NOTE: This applies to the bars I got from the company, if you check the website they have several flavors to pick from and details may vary!)

So let’s get started:

As I said above, all of them more or less have the same texture, nutty/seedy with a fruity, date base. The date flavor was there in all 4 bars.

Hazelnut + Coffee + Maca

Coming from a coffee lover, this was not my favorite. It was…gritty. Like I would take a bite of the bar and then grit.  WHAT IS THAT?!?! I checked the ingredients, and it seems it could have been the coffee beans or chia seeds, not entirely sure, but not entirely a fan. The coffee flavor was definitely strong, but overpowered the hazelnut component because I did not taste that too much. The date was sweet and strong as well…If I had to rename this bar it would be like “A Date with Coffee”…because it really just tasted like dates and coffee.

2 stars.

Cashew + Fig + Carrot

Alrighty, moving on. This one was okay. As a whole, it was entirely too sweet without much of another component to balance it out– needed more crunch, or something even slightly salty, etc. The Fig + Carrot together gave it a sweet potato vibe. & like I said, this one was lacking on the crunch factor, a cashew is a pretty soft nut to begin with so it was kind of lost in this bar. Overall, too sweet, too fruity, needs something else. Maybe almond would have been a better choice.

2.5 stars

Peach Pecan Vanilla

In this bar, the peach and date flavor really shine through. The vanilla flavor is somewhat lost. It’s a sweet bar, but not overly sweet, and almost gives off an apricot type of flavor. Chewy, dense and nutty, and the pecans add a nice crunch. I almost taste a bit of cashew in this one. Overall, this one was pretty good, I’m a fan.

3.5 stars

Texas Maple Pecan

Well, well, well, moving on to the star. This one was kind of like pecan pie 🙂 Chewy and dense, sweet but not overly so, huge chunks of pecan and a nice cinnamon flavor. It goes well with the date because it reminds me of the condensed milk, etc. they use to make pecan pie. The maple flavor is subtle,  but delicious. There is some type of “zing” to the bar, and I can’t quite figure out what it is–perhaps the cinnamon– but I like it. Basically if you’re like me and will eat the topping of a pecan pie, you’ll like this bar.

4 stars.

OVERALL, I like the idea of these bars. Gluten free, paleo, minimal ingredients, no added sugar. I think some need a tad bit of tweaking, BUT you have to also consider the minimal ingredient component. I would definitely try the Pecan based flavors, and I would be interested in trying the other flavors (like ummm they have this cool Pecan Goji Pistachio flavor!!) Thunderbird has to offer.

Check them out!

This post goes out to my gluten free friends who are sick and tired of trying gluten free pasta alternatives that ultimately, well, stink.  Fear  not, I come with solutions!!!

Explore Cuisine sent me 2 of their gluten free pasta varieties. The Organic Chickpea Fusilli, and Organic Black Bean Spaghetti.  Both of these options have more protein than your rice pasta varieties (or flour based!) and are NON-GMO verified.

Let’s start with the Organic Chickpea Fusilli. a 2 oz serving is 200 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 35 grams of carbs (5 fiber) and 11 grams of protein.  Pretty good stats if you ask me since it IS pasta.

NOW a caveat. I am NOT a pasta eater. Do I like pasta? Of course I like pasta. But it wreaks HAVOC on my blood sugars for hours, so I tend to stay away. So I had hopes that *maybe* these wouldn’t do me dirty like flour or rice based pasta does.

Ok, so let’s start with cooking, shall we?
This chickpea pasta was a real pain in the butt to cook. Once it was boiling, I lowered the heat a bit and it kept boiling over the sides with that “pasta foam”… hard to describe but it sure made a mess…several times. So PLEASE keep an eye on this and don’t turn your back (not that you should be far anyway when cooking!). I cooked it until the al dente texture.

I made it with some green beans and chicken in a light gravy. The pasta itself was great in terms of texture, it does NOT fall apart like rice based pasta would. It more or less had same consistency as flour based. It has a tiny bit of an aftertaste of chick peas, but overall very mild in flavor making it pretty versatile. It was particularly  yummy plain with some  butter and salt.

Moving on to the black bean spaghetti, this one was not a pain to cook at all, but It *does* look a little weird when it’s all cooked. Sort of like a bird’s nest. So eat with your mouth not your eyes in this case. Don’t judge it!!!

Because I actually like this one even better than the chickpea. Super mild in flavor, same texture and consistency as flour-based pasta, and went amazing with tomato sauce. The best part, at least for me, was NO EFFECT on my blood sugars. In fact, every time I ate it, my blood sugar went LOW after, and that is a diabetics dream. So I will 100% buy this in the future.

1 2 ounce serving is 215 calories, 2 grams of fat, 23 carbs, 12 grams of fiber, and 25 grams of PROTEIN!!!! Talk about AMAZING nutritional facts!!

Overall, very pleased with both of these products. I like the spaghetti more than the fusilli in terms of taste and texture, but I do wish that the black bean variety came in a fusilli or spiral type shape, as I prefer those noodles over spaghetti. But hey, cant be too choosy.

These get 4 1/2 stars from me. All my gluten free fans (and diabetics!!!) I think these are worth a shot!

All right so I have some new stuff to try from Zims! I recently reviewed another pain relief product of Zims, which was pretty good but overall nothing special.

First I tried the Max Freeze Patches which have both lidocaine and menthol. I was sent a tube of six patches in medium size which are 3 x 5″ each. They are individually wrapped and also come in extra large large and medium.

First, I put it on my neck. It is easy to unwrap and apply. I had a bit of a stiff neck, and it seemed to help. It was mostly cooling, but really make my neck feel less stiff. The patch stays on, and the odor is low, and it doesn’t linger or smell. The patch does not fall off easily which was a plus, and left no irritation.

The patch was also used on lower back and my knee and was effective on both of those as well. It doesn’t really have a heat sensation mostly just cold or cooling but no burning or irritate. it did a good job of loosening up and/or relieving some pain in the areas. It wasn’t AS STRONG as other patches I have tried but I actually prefer these, because I did not get any irritation.

4/5 stars

Next, we have the Zims Max Crack Creme.  The main ingredients in this is aloe and arnica extract. I constantly have dry hands because I wash them all the time due to taking public transportation or because of the nature of my profession. Also with winter approaching my hands get extra dry and take an extra beating. This cream was lightweight, non-greasy, and smelled pretty good. It had almost a floral scent but very very mild and smelled “natural”. It smoothed out my dry hands and made them soft and supple with no irritation. 4/5 stars

Overall, these products worked great for me! Definitely worth a try 🙂

These products were given to me for free from the company. This is an unbiased review.
