Hope & Sesame Organic Sesame Milk

Author: Healthnuttxo

Dairy allergy? No problem. There are plenty of alternatives today, including soy and almond milk. But what if you have allergies to those too? Or you are a vegan and have tree nut allergies?

In comes Sesame milk! Dairy, tree nut, soy and gluten free, as well as USDA organic and Kosher.

Hope & Sesame has organic sesame milk which has 8 grams of protein per serving containing Sesamein. They also sustain the planet: sesame grows in drought/ dry climates that other crops could not sustain life in, aka less water is needed!

Hope & Sesame also donates a portion of their profits tocancer research. You can learn more here: hopeandsesame.com/mission

As for the flavors: chocolate, original and Vanilla

I tried the Vanilla first in my iced coffee.  It reminded me of an almond/soy milk mix but with bolder flavor. It was mildly sweet, but I did notice it had somewhat of a “piecey” texture (have you ever had pea protein? It’s kind of like that) .  3 stars

The Original has a relatively bland flavor – probably best to use this in cereal or oats. There is somewhat of a sesame after taste. It isn’t really sweet, either. I wouldn’t drink this straight from the carton. However, very creamy and on the thicker side. It almost looks like a cream coming out of the carton.   2 ½ stars

The Chocolate is fantastic! Nice and sweet, yummy chocolate flavor. Very smooth, non-piecy in consistency, no noticeable after taste. I would easily swap this with chocolate milk – and is most similar to an Ovaltine in flavor.  4 stars

Overall, while these aren’t my FAVORITE, I DO like that these milks have protein. I love almond milk in my oats, but I hate that I am lacking protein then. The chocolate is by far my favorite, which I am thinking will be a good post-workout snack, as dairy can be harsh on my stomach after a work-out.

DISCLAIMER: I received these to try for free from the company. This is an unbiased review.

Always looking for more ways to incorporate veggies into my diet, I jumped at the opportunity to try Mozaics Organic chips, made with both potatoes and other fun veggies!

I was sent the BBQ and Sea salt variety — which just happen to be my 2 favorite flavor of chips. I will admit, I am not a big snacker with chips only because they are often fatty, greasy and offer little to no satiety. However, these chips have some fiber and protein, are organic, kosher, gluten free, are lower in fat and the first ingredient? Peas!!! They are also made with black beans and potatoes.

What’s fun about these chips is you can actually see the peas – there are tiny green flakes in the chips which I am assuming would be the peas.

They are both crunchy, air popped and non-greasy. There will be no wiping your greasy hand on your shirt with these chips ( I know you do it)! I wouldn’t have known they were made with peas (by flavor) unless you told me. They taste like a combination of a soy chip, a rice cake and a potato chip all in one!

1 oz (23 chips or so) is roughly 100-110 calories, 3 grams of fat, 19 grams of carbohydrate, 3-4 grams of fiber, 3-4 grams of protein. Not bad for a snack!

The BBQ variety has a slightly sweet, almost honey BBQ flavor to it. It’s not spicy nor too overpowering, but a nice mild BBQ flavor. Not too salty either, which I like. Just the right amount of flavor. 4 stars

The Sea Salt variety has a bit more of a predominant pea/edamame type flavor. I wish actually they were a tad bit more salty — but still good flavor. They were a tad on the dry side though- make sure you have a drink nearby. These are more on the bland side, and I wish they had just something else to make them pop. 3 stars

Overall, not bad, I like these! My only complaint is they are pretty fragile — I believe half my bag was broken into crumbs that resembled rice cakes once I received them in the mail. But I suppose that’s more of a packaging concern than a chip concern. Give these a try and let me know how you like them!

Silvon Bedding

Author: Healthnuttxo

Bedding for better skin? Hmm…This I have to try.

I’ll admit, the Instagram ad got me. Basically I was scrolling IG as usual, saw an ad for “35$ pillow case or $100 acne cream?” and well…it got me.

I’ve suffered with acne for the past 5-6 years, with it’s peak the past 3 years. However, we can likely contribute that partially on the horrible stress of a rigorous graduate program. I’ve tried everything. Creams, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, retinoids, eliminating dairy and refined sugar. So fine, I caved. At age 27, I still have acne, mostly isolated to my neck, behind the ears, shoulders, and side of my face… Could my pillowcase, in fact, be doing me dirty!? (no pun intended, To be fair, I never wear makeup to bed and wash my sheets 1-2x a week!)

I decided to purchase the pillow case and fitted bed sheet. & it wasn’t cheap. & if I told my mom I paid $120 for a sheet and a pillow case, she may scream at me. But I am 27 and I deserve to buy what I want without my mother forever telling me to “save my money” so… here we go!

Silvon bedding is made with organic cotton and woven with silver, which acts as an anti-microbial. According to the website, “Silver carries a naturally positive charge and bacteria carries a naturally negative charge. These opposing charges are what makes silver and bacteria attracted to each other. Silver then breaks bacteria’s cell wall and destroys it before it has a chance to reproduce.” I like it. I like the science.

But Silver? So am I going to be sleeping on scratchy sheets? I was tentative to hit the purchase button, afraid the sheets would cause my overly annoyingly sensitive skin to break out (ironically).

HOWEVER, these sheets are so smooth! They are soft, smooth, and with a silky feel. They are also cool to the touch which is a HUGE plus for me, because even in the dead of winter, ya girl is sweating. Seriously.

Okay, so I know I bought a king sized pillow case– I have a rather large tempurpedic pillow, which I normally use a queen sized pillowcase that fits perfect, if not snug. WHY is the King sized pillow case so LONG!? Not a huge deal…but I think that might be an error on their part. Or maybe mine. Who knows.

I purchased Twin XL bed sheet, which also was TOO BIG for my mattress, which is a twin with a thick mattress topper. Again, not a huge deal, but it will not fit snug like my other brands do.

What’s more annoying than the case being too long is this STAIN that was on the pillowcase after washing ONE time. I do not use benzoyl peroxide on my face (ruined too many sheets and towels with that), I do not use bleach in my wash (I used scent free, gentle detergent). I always wash my face before bed. So what gives Silvon?

Okay that’s all fine…but How did the acne hold up?

TO BE FAIR, since I graduated, my stress levels have declined, my sleep has improved, and my skin was clearing before I purchased the sheets. However, I would still get break outs.

Since purchasing the pillowcase and bedsheet, my acne…is the same, maybe somewhat improved. Perhaps there are a few less breakouts around my neck and upper back, which is exposed to my sheets.

Will I swap my retinoid for a pillowcase?

No. I will continue to use the sheets. I like they are cool to the touch, made with organic cotton and maybe longer term they will reduce my acne. We shall see.

HOWEVER, due to the pricetag, the stain after washing once, and the poor fit of sheets, this gets a 3 star rating.

This is definitely something new for me- vitamin infused toothpaste? Cool!

Vitaminpaste is the first multivitamin and mineraltoothpaste. According to the fact sheet they sent me, both varieties:

  • developed by Dentist Dr. Bruce Golden
  • Both are fluoride free, thus eliminating the risk of dental and skeletal fluorosis from fluoride toothpaste ingestion
  • This toothpaste contains ingredients that are safe to ingest
  • It is sweetened with Xylitol, which helps reduce risk of tooth decay

You are instructed to use 1 inch strip of toothpaste, brush for 2 minutes (1 minute for Mint), rinse and swallow normally and use this 3 times per day

The Mint Variety…

  • Infused with Vitamin D, E, B6, Niacin,Pantothenic Acid, Zinc, Selenium and Manganese
  • Is gluten free
  • Not tested on animals
  • Contains Sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Contains parabens to help keep toothpastebacteria free
  • Freshens breath, whitens teeth

The Vitamin Paste for Kids (Bubblegum flavor)—for kids aged 4+

  • Does NOTcontain sodium lauryl sulfate
  • Provides 50% RDA of Vitamin D, E, B3, B5, B6when used as directed (aged 4-13)
  • No parabensor preservatives
  • Contains calcium
  • Not tested on animals
  • Helps freshen breath and whiten teeth

So how did it taste?
Pretty good. The mint variety was more sweet than minty, with predominant Xylitol flavor. I like the mint, especially for kids, as it wasn’t harsh in flavor or burned when I used it (some mint toothpaste stings!). That being said, the very mild flavor made me feel like I wasn’t super “refreshed” after  brushing.

The Bubblegum flavor was also mild, but still pretty good. I liked that both varieties weren’t colored, and the bubblegum flavor was white (rather than dyed with pink).

Overall, I like the idea of these, especially for kids who won’t take a multivitamin with their meals or may be lacking some vitamins/minerals. I personally believe Fluoride plays a role in proper teeth and bone development, as well as anti-cavity effects, but I also like the fact these are fluoride free, as excess (such as consuming toothpaste) can be dangerous, and can be seen in the pediatric population. The Xylitol takes the place of Fluoride to reduce plaque, and I am wondering what the role of anti-cavity Xylitol has. My only other complaint was that this toothpaste did not really leave me feeling “refreshed” after brushing. My teeth felt clean, but the “just brushed” feeling dissipated rather quickly. However, I did not experience any burning or irritation that some of the strong minty toothpastes can cause.

SO for me, these get a solid 4.

Sabre Personal Alarm and Door Stop Alarm

Author: Healthnuttxo

A non-food review today, but important all the same because safety is KEY! Sabre has a line of products aimed at your safety in mind.  From pepper spray to home security, Sabre has you covered.

They sent me 2 of their products to review, the Personal Alarm, and the door alarm.

Let’s review the Personal Alarm first. I think this is great for those who commute to work, travel alone, go jogging, or even just to keep on your bag or purse. Unfortunately, you never know when a predator may attack, and if you have some sort of alarm to alert for help, it may help keep you safe.

The personal alarm is tiny, fits in my palm, and has a durable, sturdy clip to attach to your bag or purse strap. It is intended to be weather proof as well. I travel a lot for work, alone, and I thought it would be a great thing to have on me, especially because I travel in some not-so-safe areas.

It has a light feature to ensure that if you do need to use the alarm, people can see you! It has 3 modes, a fast flash, slow flash and a mode that allows the light to be always on, that you can control with a push of a button.

Now, for the alarm feature. Don’t mess around with this, it is LOUD!!!! My Dad and I were experimenting with it, to see how it worked, and he hit the alarm button and we were floored how loud it is! It is 120 dB, which is extremely loud, and definitely louder than I imagined for such a tiny device! I think this is great, because even in a time of emergency, a quick push of the button activates a loud alarm with flashing of light, to hopefully attract someone toward you for safety.

Here’s a pic of the personal alarm below, next to the door stop alarm.

Which…speaking of, let’s review the Door Stop Alarm.

While I do not have an immediate use for this in my home, I think it’s great if you live alone, in an apartment, a dorm room, or hey, even if you do live with your family and they aren’t home, you can always slide this under your door to be alerted of anyone breaking into your home!

It also has 120 dB of sound, a pretty sturdy grip so it stays rooted to the floor and helps prevent the door. I turned the switch on in the back, placed it under my door, and let my Dad try to open it. It immediately stopped the door from opening, no sliding of the actual device, and alarm went off as well. Again…extremely loud!!!

Overall, some great products. I cannot believe how loud the devices were given how small they are, but this is great when it comes to safety. I will definitely use the handheld device for times I go jogging alone, walk my dog at night, or even just traveling in and out of the city. It’s discrete and I can easily clip it to my backpack.

Check out SABRE and all their other products!

You are eating the healthy food…but are you properly digesting it? Dr. Liz Cruz, a gastroenterologist, is the creator of Everyday Enzymes, a natural supplement designed to help you digest and absorb all the healthy nutrients.

According to the pamphlet I received, this supplement helps support the digestion of protein, fats and carbs, as well as aiding in digestive issues such as reflux, gas, and nausea. It may also boost the immune system, and can be given to children, pets, and during pregnancy! (But please, always check with your personal doctor).

The label lists an enzyme blend of various enzymes, which thanks to my medical & nutrition background I understand, and can help decode for you!:

Amylase–> enzyme that digests starch (carbohydrates)
Protease –> enzyme that digests proteins
Lipase –> enzyme that digests fats
Cellulase –> enzyme that digests cellulose, an indigestible carbohydrate, such as in Celery or Broccoli
Invertase –> this one I had to research, but it is an enzyme made by yeast that helps break down sucrose, or sugar.
Diastase –> this is basically more Amylase
Lactase –> enzyme that breaks down lactose, in milk

+ has some Lactobacillus acidophilus & Bifidobacterium longum, aka probiotics for gut health.

You are instructed to take 2-3 capsules per meal or as instructed by your Doctor (or PA!) The label states you can also pull apart the capsules and mix it with food.

The pills are relatively small and easy to swallow. I had them in the morning or with spicy or higher fat meals, as I usually feel a little “ill” after eating too much fat (I love you avocado, but you hurt my belly every time!).

Overall, I am pleased. I can’t quite explain it, but my stomach didn’t have that “heavy” feeling after bigger meals. I didn’t have any adverse effects, stomach upset, nausea, etc. while taking the pills. While I can’t comment on my energy levels (because I sleep 4-5 hours a night…), I do feel I felt generally “better”. Placebo? Maybe. But maybe not. Regardless, I’ll take it.

I recommend giving them a try, especially if you suffer from some occasional heart burn or indigestion (remember –> always get any supplement cleared by your doctor or PA, and never self diagnose a medical problem, always get it checked out first!)

4.5 star

Eat Enlightened Low Calorie Ice Cream

Author: Healthnuttxo

I’ve seen Enlightened Ice cream pop up on the freezer shelves…always curious. Could it taste good? Surely 80-100 calories seems absurd for a serving of ice cream that has flavor… Well…much to my pleasant surprise.

Enlightened has a wide variety of low calorie ice cream that has a decent amount of protein per serving and relatively low in sugar per serving. It is sweetened with erythritol, a sugar alcohol, and made with rBST free milk. For example, the Sea Salt Caramel has 80 calories a serving, 1.5 grams of fat, 5 grams of sugar and 7 grams of protein This is an absolute dream for ice cream lovers…because who can really eat JUST half a cup!?!?

NOW–> for these ice creams, you have to let them sit on the counter for 10 minutes or so. They are low in sugar, and sugar is often what keeps the ice cream soft from the freezer. So let it thaw a bit, then enjoy!

So naturally, I tried the PB CHIP first. Because…I am the peanut butter fiend 🙂

It was UNREAL. Creamy and sweet, with PLENTY of little chocolate chips that were sweet/semi sweet in flavor. Had a vanilla-peanut butter flavor, but honestly couldn’t get over the fact it was low in sugar and how creamy it was.  I finished this pint in 2 days. An easy 5 star.

Next up, Brownies and Cookie Dough. This was a chocolate based ice cream with pieces of brownie and cookie dough bites scattered throughout. The ice cream itself was creamy, with a milk chocolate flavor. Sweet but not “sugary” sweet where it hurts your teeth. The cookie dough pieces were spot on- tasted as if it was straight from the bowl of homemade cookie dough, with the soft consistency you expect. The brownie bites were chewy, sweet and fudgy and just went perfectly with the ice cream. The best part is…there was plenty  of brownie and cookie dough bites in the ice cream. No scrimping here.

Honestly–> another 5 star from me.

Last up, Sea Salt Caramel. I was already excited to try this based on the fact I love the other two. The Ice cream itself is, again, nice and creamy, with a pretty strong caramel flavor. The caramel itself you can tell is not that sugary sweet caramel, but has more of a muted flavor (probably because it’s not loaded with sugar…). However, it’s still pretty good. There are large swirls of caramel in the ice cream, which are sweet, but has that sugar alcohol type flavor. If you’ve eaten enough sugar free/low sugar products, you know what I am talking about.

It was almost a bit too rich for me, too “sweet”, and I wish it had some sort of saltier or crunchy component. But hey, to each his own. 4 star for me.

OVERALL, I am a fan! I can’t wait to try the other flavors. I’ve seen them at Target, Stop n Shop, and other supermarkets. I will 100% buy the PB chip or Brownie & Cookie dough in the future. A definite try for those who love ice cream but may be watching their diet…or those who want an excuse to eat something sweet with some protein in it 🙂

Here’s the nutritional facts for the PB Chip — however, most of the flavors are similar, but NOT exactly the same. Visit the website for exact nutritional information!

INSPYR GEAR socks

Author: Healthnuttxo

INSPYR Gear has a ton of both functional and motivating fitness gear. The socks in particular rock! They have a cute, “empowerment message” on every pair, reinforced heel and toe, arch support, and come in GREAT colors.

They are 70% cotton, 20% nylon and 10% spandex.

They sent me a few pairs of their socks and they definitely don’t disappoint!

The socks are soft and thick, and sweat wicking. I wore the calf-high ones to the gym and worked up a good sweat, and my feet stayed super comfy. The arch support felt great on my feet and had absolutely no rubbing or discomfort. I also liked that they were tight but not TOO tight, as I find some calf-high socks are more on the compression-like side of socks, which I am not always looking to wear.

How cute are the messages!!! I love a little extra empowerment. We should be supporting each other at the gym, races, fitness, Crossfit, powerlifting, etc. Whatever you do, support each other!

I will say the shorter ankle socks, which are “one size fits all”, are a little big on me (I am a size 6). However, they aren’t so big that it’s an issue, they just run a little high. However, that makes them a great fit for when I have to wear a boot or some higher shoe for when I need additional comfort and support.

Overall, give this company a try! They have some great stuff!

Sparkling Ice had a promotion the past few months with a “Mystery Fruit Flavor” with #WhatTheFlavorSweeps, in which the brand has finally revealed the flavor is… PASSIONFRUIT PUNCH!

This drink is naturally flavored sparking water, with antioxidants, vitamins and ZERO sugar! Caffeine free, with zeros across the board for calories, carbs, sodium and sugar. It has some Vitamin A, Niacin, B12, Pantothenic Acid, Vitamin D, B6, and Biotin.  Sparking Ice has 16 other flavors, which are all lightly carbonated, low in sugar and calories, and naturally flavored. You can read more about them here.

So how does it taste?

Delicious! I made sure to chill it in the fridge for a few hours to get the full experience.

Refreshing, crisp and light in flavor. Lightly carbonated, which I actually prefer, because I hate when a drink is SO fizzy that it “hurts” a bit drinking, and almost causes some indigestion.

It was lightly fruity, almost tasted like a cross between peach, pineapple and berry flavors. AKA the perfect summer drink! (I also think this would be great mixer for alcoholic beverages, for those of you who want a low calorie treat AND are of the legal age 🙂 )

Make sure to give this new flavor a try if you see it in store!

I received this product to try for free. This is an unbiased post/review.

Peanuts are a problem these days- it seems allergies are very common, and places like schools and hospitals have become completely peanut free as a result.

Gluten is another problem. It is present in MANY foods, and can cause distress to those who are gluten intolerant or have Celiac’s disease.

In comes Rule Breaker snacks, who have developed  peanut free, nut free, gluten free and vegan snacks that are school SAFE! These snacks are made with chick peas, so they also provide a good source of protein and fiber. The company sent me the P’nutter Chocolate Chip Blondie to try.

It has 240 calories for one piece, with 10 grams of fat, (4.5 saturated), 33g of carbs, 3 grams of fiber, 13 grams of sugar and 3 grams of protein. So even with chickpeas as the first ingredient, I wasn’t super thrilled with the nutrition, but if it’s intended to be a treat, then I think it’s ok.

I had it both right out of the package and microwaved for some added goodness. Here is what it looked like:

Okay, Okay…but how was it?

It was…good. You can definitely taste the chickpea flavor, as it is predominant throughout the blondie. So if you’re not a chickpea fan, you may not like this. The mini chocolate chips add a nice touch, just the right amount of sweetness, and balance out the chickpea flavor. Not sure what the white parts of the bar are….white chocolate? They were sweet and also added a nice touch with a mild vanilla flavor.

I actually recommend microwaving it and then waiting a minute or two and eating it. The chocolate chips get all melty and the texture shifts from more dense and soft to slightly on the crunchier side. The bar itself has a sweeter feel to it, and is rich which is partly from the beans but I also believe from “no-nut butter” listed.

Overall, I think it’s a good snack, especially for kids who may feel they are left out from parties, etc. because they cannot eat the same snacks as everyone else if they have nuts, gluten etc. in it. It has a rich flavor, but is sweet enough that kids and adults can enjoy.

Overall, 3.5 star.
