Hansen’s Natural Cane Soda The Grove

Author: Healthnuttxo

I’ll be honest, I’m not a big soda drinker. I prefer water/flavored water, juices or milk for my beverages, but every now and then I DO get a craving for and iced cold soda.

So, I was excited when I was given some soda from Hansen’s, like the Hansen’s Natural Cane Soda in The Grove flavor. According to the can, this has “no caffeine, no preservatives, no caffeine, no sodium” and has “all natural flavors”. Sounds like my kind of soda! 🙂

First of all, I really liked the design of the can. It was very almost tropical looking, with leaves, and bright colors like pink, yellow and green. I’ll be honest- it was quite pretty!

So I opened up the can, and took a sip. At first I was a bit surprised, I actually expected it to be sweeter than it was, which actually I didn’t mind. It was very light and fruity tasting, with lemon-lime and strawberry flavors. I think it’s a really good soda for the summer because it is very light and refreshing. Overall, I’m giving it 3 1/2 stars. Although it’s not something I would drink everyday, I think it was a refreshing and very nice tropical tasting treat. 🙂

Funky Monkey Freeze Dried Fruit

Author: Healthnuttxo

I’m feeling fruity these week, obviously! (it’s the good weather, I think  it makes me craves fruit!)

So what better time then now to do a review of Funky Monkey Freeze Dried Fruit! This company has a line of all natural freeze dried fruit snacks which provide THREE servings of fruit per 1 oz bag! Here’s some info about the company which Jennifer at Funky Monkey Snacks provided me with.
“•          Funky Monkey Snacks have no added colors, flavors, sugars, or preservatives
•          Our special, proprietary manufacturing process provides for a crunchier texture vs. conventional freeze-drying techniques
•          We use full slices and pieces (not dices) of delicious, fresh fruit
•          Funky Monkey is made in Brazil using tropical fruits at the peak of freshness
•          Our products are gluten-free and are certified Kosher
•          One of our 7 flavors, Purple Funk, also includes açai, a berry from the Amazon that is viewed as the newest superfood
•          Bananamon, JiveALime, and Purple Funk are 100% organic! Pink Pineapple is 95% organic, Carnaval Mix is 70% organic. ”

Nice facts! Who knew these fruits came all the way from BRAZIL!?

I was super excited when I got my package in the mail from Funky Monkey, as I knew these were going to be unique and delicious. The flavors come in Applemon, Bananamon, Carnaval Mix, JiveALime, MangOJ, Pink Pineapple, and Purple Funk.

I decided to try Bananamon, MangOJ, and Pink Pineapple.

Bananamon- this flavor is bananas with cinnamon. I like how they were actual round slices of banana, not just wimpy little pieces. They were airy and crunchy, and COATED with cinnamon! The banana pieces were also sweet and delicious. A perfect snack by itself, or I had them paired with a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of milk (ahh, heaven).

MangOJ- this flavor is freezedried mango with orange juice. All I can say is woah! This one is definitely sweet and tangy, and keeps you wanting more! The orange juice was a perfect compliment to the mango. However the pieces did get stuck in my teeth pretty easy (the annoying part of freeze-dried fruit), but I ignored that for the totally awesome taste. Who knew they could make mango crunchy ?

Pink Pineapple- this one is freeze dried pineapple and guava. GUAVA! I have never eaten guava before until today- and it was certainly yummy! Mellow, yet sweet, it went nice with the  TANGY pineapple. The pineapple tasted just as if it was fresh, and really left an impression on my tongue. Good combination, yet again!

Overall, I give these 5 stars 🙂  They are certainly tasty, provide THREE servings of fruit per 1 oz bag, provide fiber, and are a great alternative to some other crispy/crunchy snacks. They are also preservative free, made with organic ingredients and have no added sugars. Definitely my new favorite freeze dried crunchy fruit snack (Bananamon was my favorite of the 3!)

Yum. Junk Food. I mean really, who doesn’t love chips, cheese puffs & salty pretzels? 😀

LUCKILY- Michael Season’s makes versions of your typical unhealthy fare that are much more diet (and heart!) friendly. All of their snacks are healthier, and don’t contain all those nasty ingredients some companies put into their snacks.

The company sent me a few of their snacks to try, and one of my favorites was the Baked Cheddar Cheese Puffs. Not only are these all natural, they are wheat and gluten free, have no hydrogenated oils, no preservatives, no artificial colors and no artificial flavors. AND- I was sent a bag of them in a pre-portioned 100 calorie pack- gotta love portion control!

Each one of them is about the size of your pinky finger, and a dusted with a coating of cheesey powder. What I liked was that it didn’t leave my fingers all greasy or ORANGE like some other cheese puffs can. The taste was amazing! STRONG cheesy flavor, similar to cheetos, and you can definietly taste the buttermilk undertones of flavor. Salty and cheddary, they provide a burst of flavor and some guilt free snacking. Plus, you get a lot in the bag for 100 calories! Normally 100 calorie packs scrimp on portions, but you get a good amount in each bag. Kudos, Michael Season’s, you get 4 1/2 stars!

1 bag is 100 calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 15 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber and 2 grams of protein.

Organic Cornmeal (40%), Cornmeal, Corn Oil and/or Sunflower Oil, Whey, Reduced Lactose Whey, Butter (cream, salt, annatto extract), Buttermilk, Cheddar & Blue Cheese (cultured milk, salt, enzymes), Salt, Disodium Phosphate, Lactic Acid, Natural Flavor, Color (paprika, tumeric, annatto), Citric Acid.

HEY! Ya know what goes good with cheese puffs? ALMOND MILK! well,  not really.. but enter my giveaway, anyway!!

Cascadian Farm Fruitful O’s Cereal

Author: Healthnuttxo

Cascadian Farm makes tasty foods, ranging from cereals, granolas, frozen foods, cereal bars, etc.  that are all organic. According to Cascadian Farm, “Our organic foods are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, chemical fertilizers or genetically engineered ingredients.” This also means no preservatives or nasty artificial colors or flavors. As a bonus– the companies farming methods help protect and preserve our environment. Way to be, Cascadian Farm!

So I went to Waldbaums the other day and I went to pick up my usual cereals, when I spotted this new cereal Fruitful O’s. They were naturally fruit flavored, instead of artificially flavored. I decided to revel in my childhood and buy a box. It was a bit pricey, all organic food usually is, but I wanted to try this new cereal.

So, I opened up the box when I got home and poured myself a bowl. They came in colors yellow, orange and purple. I really liked how the serving size was 1 cup  and still only had 120 calories. Plus, there was a LOT of Fruitful O’s in my bowl with just 1 cup!

The taste was actually quite good, however it was much  better in some vanilla almond breeze or skim milk than dry. When they were dry, they were sweet and crunchy, with a mostly orangy fruity flavor. However, when I had them with milk or almond milk, the flavors really shown through, and they wer actually sweeter. Normally when I add milk to my cereals, I notice it gets soggy fast and the flavor disperses in the milk. This didn’t happen as quickly with this cereal. I usually have a method for this, as I like my cereal when it’s a tad soggy from the milk, but still has a crunch. I measure out how much I want, put half in a bowl (usually with a sliced banana), add the milk (and ice cube, of course! 😉 ) and then I add more cereal as I go along. Keeps the flavor and the crunch going!

Overall, I was impressed. Cascadian Farms’ brand is also made with whole grain oat flour and has 3 grams of fiber per serving.  There is also no partially hydrogenated oils or artificial colors/dyes.

I give Fruitful O’s 4 stars. I think it’s good to mix in with some higher fiber cereals, or to have a bowl as a snack (the cereal alone probably won’t hold you over very long).

1 cup is 120 calories, 1 gram of fat, 27 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, and 2 grams of protein. It is also fortified with vitamins and minerals, like calcium (10% per bowl), iron (25% per bowl) and zinc (35% per bowl).

la la loving the organic ingredients
Whole Grain Oat Flour, Corn Meal, Sugar (from cane), Tapioca Syrup, Oat Fiber, Wheat Starch, Sea Salt, Sunflower Oil, Color (elderberry juice concentrate, turmeric and annatto), Fructose, Natural Flavor.

Polly want a cracker?
Maybe not, but I do!

We all love crackers! With cheese, jelly, peanut butter, or even straight out of the box. Crackers are a perfect munchy, salty snack. A lot of them, however, are packed with hidden hydrogenated oils, sodium and artificial flavors and colors. THANKS, but I prefer my crackers au naturale.

So, I got to try some delicious cheddar and wheat crackers provided by Ian’s Natural Foods that are organic & quite tasty. The crackers are about the size of your standard Cheez-it, and are square in shape. Each variety comes with conveinent 100 calorie packs, with about 15-20 crackers in each pouch. There is actually a decent amount of crackers in each pouch, and I was satisfied with the portion given. Normally with 100 calorie packs, the calories may be low, but so is the nutrition and the amount of product you get. (Has anyone had the “100 calorie pack Mini Muffin” variety? HELLO- you get like, TWO muffins! What is THAT!? )

Anyway (rant over)-
Onto the tasting…

Cheddar- Yummmy! Forget Cheez-its– these are going to be my new cheesy cracker in my closet! They had a nice cheddar cheese flavor to it, and while they were a bit salty, they definitely satisfied. They are very crunchy and actually quite addictive. Although satisfied with 1 bag, I totally ate 2 in one serving (whhhhat! They were delicious! 😉 )

Wheat- Oooh. These are also good. They reminded me of a nuttier wheat thin. Slightly salty, and had a slight buttery taste to them. These were great as is, and also with some Laughing Cow Cheese spread on top, and as mini PB&J “sandwiches” (but when do you ever go wrong with peanut butter & jelly?) I also liked how they were made with some whole wheat flour as well.

Overall, these get 4 stars. Perfect for snacking and for on the go. I preferred the cheddar to the wheat, but both are quite tasty. I also love how the ingredients are organic and healthier than other cracker snacks. Plus, the box is 100% recycled paperboard- eco friendly too. Gooooo Ian’s!

1 serving (1 pouch) is 100 calories, 2-3.5 grams of fat, 15-18 carbohydrates, 1-2 grams of fiber, and 2 grams of protein.

Cheddar- Organic Wheat Flour, Organic Oils (safflower and/or palm fruit oils), Organic Cheddar Cheese [(organic cultured pasteurized milk, salt, enzymes), Organic Nonfat Milk, Organic Whey, Salt, Disodium Phosphate], Salt, Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Leavining (monocalcium phosphate, baking soda, ammonium bicarbonate), Natural Annatto, Yeast.

Wheat- Organic Wheat Flour, Organic Whole Wheat Flour, Organic Oils (safflower and/or palm fruit oils), Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, Salt, Organic Malt Extract, Leavining (baking soda, ammonium bicarbonate), organic paprika, natural annatto.

Simply Scrumptous Fit & Flavorful Cookies

Author: healthnuttxo

Simply Scrumptous (yes, spelled without the “i”), makes delicious, gourmet cookies & brownies. They use only all natural ingredients, with not a single preservative or additive. They make giant cookie cakes, muffins, brownies & cookies, all with a rich and truly decadent taste. They also have a Fit & Flavorful line for those of us who don’t have any extra wiggle room in our diets for sweets, or for those of us who are just health conscious. The Fit & Flavorful line provides fat free (yes, FAT FREE!) cookies, cupcakes, muffins, donuts, and carrot cake. They are all natural, low calorie and individually wrapped (yay portion control!).

I know what your thinking… fat free? low calorie? all natural? “these gotta taste like cardboard…”

NOPE! I was skeptical at first too..fat free products are normally nasty in place of the real deal. But these products are GOOD! Today, I’m going to review the cookies. And boy, were they a pleasure to eat 😀

Each cookie is actually pretty big, approximately 3 inches in diameter, and have the normal thickness of a homemade cookie. They come in 4 flavors, and all have such a unique consistency- crisp on the outside, and very soft and moist on the inside. It rocks! It’s like getting the best of both worlds- soft & crunchy cookie! In order from my favorite to least favorite, here are the 4 cookies…

Super Snickerdoodle- wow. Literally in love when I bit this cookie. It’s SUPER soft and almost has that fresh baked gooey/yummy consistency in the center. It’s also covered in cinnamon, and has a sweet cinnamon sugar taste, with just a hint of vanilla. I can’t believe it’s fat free- it’s soooo delicious!! This one gets 5 stars for taste.

Ooh La-La Oatmeal Raisin– ohh goodness. This one’s amazing too. There are TONS of raisins in it too- no scrimping here! It was also sweet and similar in taste with the snickerdoodle- it has a vanilla/sugar cookie taste. The raisins were perfect in the cookie-made the cookies extra chewy and soft. Yum. This one also gets 5 stars for taste 😀

Double Fudge Chocolate- this one has a strong cocoa powder taste rather than a “Hershey bar” chocolate taste. It’s still very good- and I don’t think it’s as sweet as the other ones. It does remind me of eating fudge-  just not as dense. It was really good with some peanut butter smeared on it. (But, when is PB& chocolate ever a bad combination?? 🙂  ) This one gets 4 stars for taste.

Sensational Sugar- I tried 2 of these, and had 2 different experiences. One was okay and not that sweet, but soft, and the other was really good, sweeter, and harder/crispier. The sugar is my least favorite of the 4, I feel like it was missing something, and surprisingly, despite the name, wasn’t as sweet as the others. It was still a good cookie, but just needed a little more oomph. This one gets 3 1/2 stars for taste.

Simply Scrumptous- you make excellent, mouth watering cookies, all fat free and under 100 calories. (Can you please make a PEANUT BUTTER flavor!?! 😀 😀 😀 ) The only thing keeping me from eating this ALL DAY LONG (and I’ve already had the sugar one with my breakfast, the snickerdoodle flavor for a snack…) is that they are made with Unbleached Flour, and use refined sugar. If they were whole wheat- or even partially whole wheat- and used  a less refined sugar like molasses or honey, these cookies would be 5 stars for sure! I do think that using refined sugar might play into the awesome texture of the cookies, as sugar often alters the consistency of baked goods a lot. However, taking nutrition, taste and calorie count into effect, I’m giving them an overall rating of 4  stars. They really are yummy and decently sized. Perfect swap for your standard cookies anyday. Check them out here! Also, get 35% off your first order using the code HNXO!

Almondina Cookies

Author: healthnuttxo

Almondina makes “a delicious cookie without the guilt”. How without the guilt you ask? Well, there are no preservatives, artificial flavors/colors, no added fat or salt, are all natural, and relatively low in fat and calories. They are crispy biscotti-like cookies, and come in several flavors- Original, Choco-nut, Cinnaroma, Gingerspice, AlmonDuo, Anniversary, BranTreats, Sesame, Pumpkin Spice, and Chocolate Dipped. All of them sound delectable!
I was fortunate enough to try, courtesy of Almondina Company, the Choconut, Pumpkin Spice, and Sesame flavors.

Each of these “biscuit-cookies” are about as long as your finger and wide as two fingers put together. They are crispy and crunchy, which I give credit to the “no added fat” aspect of the recipe.

Sesame- these were different- normally I’m not a sesame person, but these were enjoyable. My mom certainly enjoyed them, she kept bugging me for more after i gave her one (does the book If You Give A Mouse A Cookie… ring a bell to anyone?? 😛 ). They had SOOOO many sesame seeds- so if you like sesame, definitely try this cookie! It wasn’t as sweet as the other ones, but it was good with some lemon/herbal tea.

Choconut- Chocolate lovers-rejoice! these had a deep brown chocolate color to them. They were mildly sweet and definietely hard and crunchy, except for the spots filled with raisins. Those were nice & chewy, and it provided a nice relief to the crunch. It had a very good chocolate flavor and a LOT of almonds. Bursting with almonds even (the cookie is 20% almonds). It was fresh and flavorful, and I got my chocolate fix.  I also spread it some peanut butter on it- delish!

Pumpkin Spice- yuumm. Brings all the flavors of fall into a cookie. It had a nice nutmeg/cinnamon after taste, alongside a sweet and pumpkin-y flavor. Once again, the cookie is packed with almonds and pumpkin seeds. Very satisfying, and paired well with some vanilla yogurt 🙂

Overall, these are pretty good. I like how you get 4 of the cookies in a serving, for about 130 calories and not too much fat or sugar. I’m giving them 4 stars overall (5 stars to the choconut flavor-yum!).Almonds are definietely the dominant ingredient, and they don’t scrimp on them in the cookie! I think they are best when paired with something soothing, like yogurt, tea, or icecream to cancel out some of the CRUNCH. I’d like to try the cinnamon  and chocolate dipped varieties as well 🙂  I’d also be interested if they ever made a variety without all the almonds or nuts, but rather a “plain” cookie, like sugar flavored or something. I’ll keep an eye out!
