Cosi Lighter Side Tandoori Chicken Sandwich

The other day I went to visit my personal trainer.

It. Was. Awesome.

I was sore from head to toe the next day. Really. I THOUGHT I was in shape.

Regardless, post exercise, I went home and realized I was starving. But had hardly anything in my kitchen. A girl can only have scrambled eggs as a source of protein for lunch so many days a week. So I decided to go to one of my favorite spots, Cosi, and get a sandwich packed with some delicious chicken for protein.

Looking at the menu, I decided on the Lighter Side Tandoori Chicken Sandwich. It was chicken, a fat free vinaigrette, chunks of chicken, red bell peppers, and their beyond delicious whole grain bread (although white bread is also an option. But you know me- gotta get the whole grain when offered!)

By the time I got my sandwich, I was ravenous, which I think enhanced the eating experience even more. But I have a feeling this sandwich would have been delicious even if I wasn’t as hungry as I was.

As you can see, huge chunks of chicken, strips of peppers, and a fluffy yet crust bread. The chicken had a bit of heat to it, and was spiced mildly. It was chewy, with a little bit of tang, and had a bit of a peppery flavor as well. I liked that there was BIG pieces in the sandwich, and not little cubes or anything like that.

Moving on to the peppers, they were, ok. They were chewy but still had a bite to them, and were tangy but not too spicy which I liked. I wasn’t really crazy about the peppers, and could have totally eaten the sandwich without them.

Moving onto the bread. Oh my goodness the bread. Seriously, can  I just go in there and order bread? Because I’m certainly tempted. It was crusty on the outside, and fluffy on the inside with a slight olive oil flavor. The dressing even soaked itself in parts of the bread, which provided even more flavor. It seriously was delicious.

Overall, really tasty! It also came with carrots (or I believe chips was an option as well) on the side. With my sandwich, carrots, and a drink it came out to about 10 dollars. Needless to say, I was full for a few hours off of this sandwich, so well worth the money!  4 stars

Cosi Fire-Roasted Veggie Sandwich

My first RESTAURANT review! I don’t eat out much, but when I do, I want something that’s not only tasty, but healthy too!

Yesterday I went to Cosi for dinner, and ordered a Fire-Roasted Veggie Sandwich on whole grain bread and had it warmed up as well. There was the option of chips or carrots on the side, and I chose the carrots-nothing like a side of veggies to go with my veggies! ; )  I believe my total came out to around $8.05, which  I don’t think was that bad since it was a pretty large sandwich.

Considering my excellent photography skills, here’s what it looked like both open and closed. Apologies for nearly cutting off half of the sandwich..


I wasn’t really sure how to approach this, so I ate it open-faced with a fork.  I tore off a piece of bread first and took a bite. Mmmmm. Now this is how bread should taste!! It was hard and crunchy on the outside, tasting kind of like a cracker, and then had a softer, slightly chewy consistency on the inside. It was salty, in a good way, and very flavorful. Really, really tasty.

Moving on to the actual sandwich part rather than being the carb queen I am and loving the bread (typical…), the veggies! There was eggplant, onion, peppers, some unidentified vegetables (a pickle?? I wasn’t sure what one of them were) and then a few shreds of fresh lettuce. I thought the lettuce was awkward. Why fresh lettuce? It was good, but not super crisp, probably because I asked for my sandwich warm. Anyway- I tried the eggplant first, and well, I wasn’t a fan. It was chewy and moist, but just not my style. The peppers were okay- not quite tender so they still had that crunch and bite to them, but fresh tasting. My favorite, ironically because I usually don’t like them, was the onions! They were sweet, very soft, and very flavorful.

Lastly, on the delicious bread was a delicious cheesy spread. Oh soooo good! It was salty, creamy and had a white cheddar cheese flavor to it. I was tempted to ask for a Fire-Roasted Veggie Sandwich with only the bread, the cheese, and the onions for next time. But I guess that would be kind of like ordering a loaded baked potato with no toppings. Whatever.

I’d give this a 4 star overall.

1 sandwich (9 oz) is 324 calories, 8 grams of fat, 44 grams of carbohydrates, 4 grams of fiber, 4 grams of sugar and 11 grams of protein.

Morning Star Farms Sweet & Sour Chik’n

Break out the ChopSticks, but DON’T pick up the phone to order Chinese take-out!!

I found a new meal that whoops traditional fast food “sweet & sour chicken’s” BUTT! 🙂

Morning Star Farms Sweet & Sour Chik’n is a veggie entree with chik’n nuggets, peppers, carrots and pineapple chunks all slathered in a sweet and tangy sauce, over a bed of whole grain brown rice.I know your drooling by now. I certainly was when I read the box at my supermarket- I just had to try it!

So after a nice bike ride on this beautiful 80 degree day, my muscles were tired and my stomach was hungry. I decided to pop this entree in the microwave, along with some steamed broccoli for extra veggies. I transfered the entree to a plate, and was surprised to see how much actually came out! This was a NICE sized dinner- no skimpy portions here! I probably didn’t even need the side of broccoli, but I’ll never turn down extra veggies 8)

Onto each component of the meal…

The Chik’n- the chik’n was wrapped in a soft and doughy tempura batter, that I actually enjoyed. It was a little mushy due to the sauce, but tasty nonetheless. The actual “meat” part had the same consistency of chicken, and was similar in taste. When isolated, I could definietely taste a combination of soy and chicken flavors, but when eated with the tempura batter and the sauce- you would never be able to tell it’s not real chicken! I also liked that these were big CHUNKS of chik’n. I got about 4-5 chunks in my entree (see pic below after I took a bite! 😉 )

The Sauce- TOTALLY makes the meal. It’s SO sweet (maybe even a tad bit too sweet- drink water with this meal), but I liked the sweetness, as it balanced the tang out nicely. There is a very strong pineapple/ketchup flavor, that blends nicely. There is also a TON of sauce- every component of this meal gets covered, no naked veggies or rice ! 🙂

The Veggies/Rice- this meal has primarily carrots, red, green & yellow peppers, and pineapple. The peppers and carrots were soft and tender, and went nicely with the meal. I loved the warm pineapple chunks- deeelish! Warm pineapple never fails, and it was juicy & sweet!  The rice was a tad bit chewy, but was actually quite good.

 Overall, don’t like the “chik’n” part of this meal scare you meat lovers (or veggie protein haters >:( ) away! This meal ROCKS! I give it 4 1/2 stars. It was filling, low in fat, and WAY better than Chinese Food. It was also relatively low in sodium for a frozen entree (550 mg, 23% daily values). The only reason this meal loses half a star is because there is only 4 grams of fiber ( I prefer my dinners to have at least a little more!), refined sugar (oh, man!), and contains some funky modified ingredients, like modified vegetable gum and modifed corn starch- “natural” per se, but not straight from the garden if you catch my drift.

Otherwise- this meal was carton-lickin’ GOOD!  You can bet all the sauce was GONE, and every morsel was eaten!! 🙂
