Alright! I got some goodies from Krush Nutrition to try out, including their Nutty by Nature Peanut Butter, made with whey protein, flax and chia, as well as their Krush Bars in Raw Cookie Dough and Birthday Cake flavor. Let’s begin!

Naturally (no pun intended), I started with the Nutty by Nature Peanut butter. Oh…it’s been a while for me and peanut butter. See, we are good friends…but he is evil, and I end up eating the whole jar in 3 days or so…BAD. So we argue and we fight and I’m mad, and then I don’t buy it for weeks, sadly pass by it on the shelves…and somehow he always comes back!

LOL. What can I say I love nut butter. Here’s what it looked like!

IMG_0756

Mmmmm. You can see the baby chia seeds in there! I noticed everytime I ate the nut butter the top of it would have a slight oily residue, and underneath it was drier, but then if I left if overnight, it would go back to the same scenario. Which, I am not complaining,  because oil is good for nut butter. Nut butter without oil = awful. Trust me…I’ve tried taking oil out of Natural peanut butter before. BAD idea…

Anyway, this peanut butter…ah-mazing. So good I had to keep it in my roommate’s room so I wouldn’t eat the whole dang thing in a few days (I wish I was kidding). It is sweet and creamy, but has some texture to it. You can taste the sweetener, but it’s good, it’s xylitol, and I can guarantee that because I am a diabetic and I know my sweeteners! However, only 2 grams of sugar, despite the sweet taste. I really, really loved this nut butter, dangerously good if I do say so myself.

You can tell there is something mixed in it, most likely the whey protein, but does not take away from the flavor at all. It gets a teeny bit pasty at the end of the jar, but I’ll choose my battles. This thing tastes like the inside of a Nutter Butter cookie. UGH! SO GOOD!

Moving on… Krush Bars! There are gluten free, protein bars, loaded up with fiber. The stats reminded me of a Quest bar, which I took a picture of below.

As you can see, low sugar, high fiber, the whole deal. 240 calories, which is kind of high, but these are natural bars so I will take it.  Here is the Raw Cookie Dough bar up close

And…here is the Birthday Cake bar up close. CHECK THOSE SPRINKLES!!!

IMG_0698

Let’s discuss. Both of these bars have a home-made feel…very soft, chewy, dense but not hard, authentic feel to them. Something that screams “hey, I wasn’t made in a huge factory. I was handmade”, which I kind of like. The Raw Cookie Dough was sweet, but semi muted in sweetness. I expected sweeter, seeing as cookie dough is sickeningly sweet (but, c’mon here Lisa, this is a PROTEIN version of cookie dough…not a tube of it…). There were a few chocolate chunks in the bar which were good, but again, not that sweet. This made sense, as the bar indicated there was no added sugar. There was a peanut butter undertone of flavor, which of course I enjoyed, and the overall flavor was nice. I felt it was missing something…but still a good bar. 3 1/2 stars

The Birthday Cake bar was delightful. The sprinkles added a nice touch and pop of color. It was sweet, but again semi muted in sweetness, and not sugary tasting. It was dense like a breakfast bar. It reminded me of a sweet treat or confection in a protein bar form. Not exactly screaming frosted ice cream birthday cake…maybe a less sweeter cake pop in bar form. With protein. However… the protein flavor was minimal, if not non-existent. I really enjoyed this bar. I wish I had another one. 4 stars

Overall…some good stuff from Pure Fitness Nutrition. I am mad because now I have to go buy more of that peanut butter. *sigh* It was too dang good! =]

Quest Bar Cinnamon Roll & Coconut Cashew

Author: Healthnuttxo

The LOVELY people over at Quest Bar sent me a  free sample box of 11 of their products, the QuestBar.

What’s a QUESTBAR you ask? This particular line of protein bars states it is “the only protein bar with a perfect nutritional profile” according to the insert I was sent alongside the bars. Each bar has 20 grams of protein, 4-6 grams of “non fiber carbs”,  has no added sugar, no soy protein, and is gluten free.

I got the box yesterday, and already tried 2 of the bars. (Eager beaver over here 😉 )

The first one I tried was Coconut Cashew.

It was a tan colored bar, about the size, length-wise, of my palm.  Upon first bite, I though…cinnamon? There was a bit of a cinnamon flavor, which accompanied the yummy coconut. It was very chewy, very soft, and dense. It was sweet, but did not have a sugary taste to it. There was a bit of an aftertaste, but not overpoweringly so. I LOVED how chewy it was, and how it had a good bite to it. And although I didn’t really taste much cashew flavor, it was predominantly coconut and that “cinnamon” I tasted, I think the cashew may have played a role in the softness and (very) slightly oily consistency. You can see when you touch the bar it’s not super dry and I think the bit of fat from the nuts may have something to do with that. This one gets 4.5 stars

Next up, The Cinnamon Roll flavor.

I was recommended by 2 people to try this one, so I had high expectations. And…they were most certainly met!  This bar was SO good! Upon first bite, I definitely tasted the cinnamon. It was sweet, but again, not sugary tasting. It was also very soft, chewy and dense, as well as it had a very fresh and moist feel to it. I could almost taste the “icing” in the bar on the “cinnamon roll”, and….in fact…it DID pretty much taste like a cinnamon roll! Dang!!  I will definitely be ordering more of these in the future, as I really enjoyed it. I was quite sad when it was over, because the flavor was phenomenal and the nutritional facts were awesome to back it up. It was a tad high in sodium (300 mg) , but nothing too outrageous. 5 stars

One thing I liked about these bars, is that although they had a good deal of fiber in them, it didn’t bother my stomach. Sometimes with products that have a LOT of fiber (more than 8 grams or so added) I notice my stomach will hurt, but these did not do anything, which I liked. I was very content and filled with the bar, and really enjoyed both of these flavors 🙂 More reviews to come!

Here is the nutritional facts for the Coconut Cashew flavor.

Clif Builder’s S’mores Protein Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

Another Builder’s Bar review! This time, the S’mores flavor. Who could really ever resist a S’more? Chocolate? Marshmallow? Graham crackers? All warm and gooey…

Ok I’ll stop now, before day dreaming turns into my actually going out to buy ingredients to make S’mores….

Insert Clif Builder’s S’mores Protein Bar, made with natural ingredients, organic ingredients, and still some muscle-loving protein. I liked the chocolate chip one I had a few days ago, and bought a whole bunch more.

Upon first bite, I REALLY liked it. It was sweeter than the Chocolate Chip flavor, and more flavorful. The top part was soft and chewy and dense, and the bottom part of the bar was “crunchier”, and together it was a really complimenting texture.

The flavor I would say was a predominant sweet chocolate, with a good bit of marshmallow flavor. I did get the sense that the bar contained a “toasted” flavor, kind of like a graham cracker would provide. As with the other bar, or any protein bar really, I needed some water to drink with this. (Hey, some milk if you feel like adding even more protein!) It had that salty/sweet combination going on, and water fit the bill quite nicely.

Overall, yum! Love the high protein, and that it’s low glycemic according to the wrapper. I also like how it doesn’t taste chalky like some protein bars can. It is a bit high in sugar/sodium and low in fiber, so overall, 4 stars

Will buy again! 🙂

Promax Cookies ‘n Cream Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

Well, I’ll be honest. I’ve tried my fair share of protein bars in the past, and I usually find them to be sort of chalky, dense, or just very bland. However, after trying the Cookies ‘n Cream Bar from Promax, it made me rethink protein bars!

Seriously guys- this bar totally rocked. Not only is there 20 grams of filling protein per bar, it was actually quite big (75 grams)! I opened up the bar and saw a thin white coating, with a dark brown/black colored bar underneath. I took a bite, and was both surprised and totally pleased. This bar was SOFT! Like fudgy and chewy soft! So good, I really loved the consistency. But what did I also love? THE TASTE! Oh yea!! The coating tasted like a sweet vanilla icing, and the bar itself was sweet, slightly chocolatey, and also a slight peanut butter flavor. Just absolutely delicious- all the flavors went together really well.

Overall, 4 1/2 stars. This doesn’t get 5 stars from me because there are 30 grams of sugar in this 75 gram bar, and only 1 gram of fiber. It was very hard to not eat the whole bar in one sitting, which had 270 calories. Besides the awesome flavor and texture, I did like that it had 25% of the calcium needs, and only had 4.5 grams of fat. Nice!!

1 bar is 270 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 39 grams of carbohydrates, 30 grams of sugar, 1 gram of fiber, and 20 grams of protein.

After a workout, there’s a few things I crave. Protein, to fuel my hard worked muscles, something sweet, to reward myself for a hard workout, and something healthy, to treat the body good and give it what it deserves. So, what better way to indulge after the gym than with an all natural Amazing Grass GREEN SuperFood Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bar? 🙂

Amazing Grass sent me some products to try, and one of them was the GREEN SuperFood Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Bar. Combining two of my favorite things, chocolate and peanut butter, I certainly was excited for this.

This bar is all natural, gluten free, and according to the wrapper, made with organic peanuts, dates and green foods. According to the website, “We’ve taken our alkalizing Green SuperFood, with antioxidant rich fruits and vegetables and combined them in a bar that will satisfy your hunger and deliver nutrients to your body the way Mother Nature intended…unprocessed, organic and delicious.”

So I opened up the bar, and certainly was happy. It looked like a chocolate covered bar, and pretty thick too. I took a bite, and was actually quite surprised. The chocolate on top was smooth and sweet, I actually thought it was milk chocolate but the ingredients say it’s a “Dark Chocolate Coating”. The inside of the bar is, well, GREEN! They weren’t kidding about the “GREEN” part! I didn’t really taste too much peanut butter flavor, more like just a hint of peanut, but what I really tasted was a fruity flavor. It almost reminded me of chocolate covered raisins- but in bar form. It was tasty, though! Definitely a dense and chewy bar, it provided a sweet and slightly salty taste that certainly satisfied.

Overall, I give it 3 1/2 stars. It certainly was satisfying, and I liked the chocolatey coating on the outside. I really liked that it was made with organic ingredients, and contained the Green SuperFoods! However, I do wish it had more of a peanut butter taste, and slightly less fat per bar. Otherwise, I think it’s a great treat after the gym, or anytime!

Hey, if you want to buy these or other Amazing Grass products for yourself, you can click on the picture below!! 🙂

Luna Protein Bars

Author: Healthnuttxo

Need a little extra protein in your day? Well I think I have a tasty solution for you guys, made by Luna!

I’ve had some Luna Bars before, and certainly enjoyed them. So I was excited to try the Luna Protein Bars I was sent in the mail to try, courtesy of Luna (thanks, guys!). According to the website, “The power of protein keeps you full and feeling good about it, so go ahead—indulge in the chocolatey, nougaty goodness of LUNA Protein. Entirely natural, satisfying and sustaining for under 200 calories.” Each bar is all natural with 12 grams of protein, and added vitamins and minerals. They come in three flavors, Cherry Chocolate Almond, Chocolate Peanut Butter, and  Cookie Dough. I was most excited to try the Cookie Dough flavor- anything cookie dough flavored HAS to be good in my eyes! 🙂

Each bar is covered in chocolate with a dense, chewy center. I actually thought that they wouldn’t fill me up- they looked a bit tiny. I would say they are about as long as your pointer finger, and then as wide as 2 fingers. However, due to the chewy and dense nature of the bar, and the rich taste, they actually were quite filling! 🙂

Cookie Dough- this one actually reminded me of those candies, the malted milk balls for the flavor. I really didn’t taste much cookie dough flavor, but was more of a salty/sweet chocolate-y flavor. It certainly was the sweetest of the three bars, and I felt like I needed to drink some water with it. It was still pretty yummy, but not as I had expected. 3 1/2 stars

Chocolate Peanut Butter- I liked this one better than the cookie dough flavor, and it wasn’t as sweet. It has a peanutty-taffy like center, that had that “sweet” peanut butter rather than “savory” peanut butter taste. The milk chocolate on the outside was delicious- smooth and yummy. I also liked the little bits/chunks in the bar, which I would assume to be bits of peanuts. 4 stars

Cherry Chocolate Almond- Surprisingly (and ironically), the bar I thought I would like the least, was actually my favorite!  This one was really delicious!! It tasted like a chocolate covered cherry, with the perfect amount of sweetness. It was chewy, but not as dense as the other 2 bars, and also had little bits of almonds for a tiny crunch. The chocolate on the outside was also very good, and went perfect with the cherry flavor. 4 1/2 stars

Overall, these are good. They certainly were satisfying, and quenched my appetite, especially after a hard kickboxing workout. I liked that they are covered with delicious chocolate, low glycemic, and packed with protein and provide important vitamins and minerals like calcium. What I didn’t like was that they are a bit high in saturated fat (3.5- 4 grams), and also a bit high in sugar. However, if you like protein bars and crave some sweetness, I would definitely give these a try!

Cookie Dough– 1 bar is 180 calories, 6 grams of fat, 21 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, 15 grams of sugar and 12 grams of protein.
