Alright!

So a friend of mine told me about this brand called D’s Naturals. I personally never heard of them or have seen them in store, so I went to their website to check them out. I got the opportunity to try some of their No Cow bars, in 3 varieties- the Mint Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Cookie Dough,  and Blueberry Cobbler.

What makes these bars special?

They are gluten free, vegan, dairy free, soy free, no sugar added, lactose free, and non GMO according to the label. They run roughly 170 calories per bar, with 20 grams of protein and 19 grams of fiber. They are sweetened with Erythritol, not sugar.

These were appealing to me, especially as a Type 1 Diabetic. I CANNOT have added sugar…well I mean I *can* but, it doesn’t lead to pretty blood sugars. However, protein bars are usually chock full of sugar (and sugar is also HONEY, CANE JUICE, do not be fooled!). These also appealed to me since they had a good dose of fiber and protein, so I would have optimal blood sugar regulation as well as being, well, full!

Here’s a sneak peek of the Mint Chocolate Chip Bar:IMG_2221

As you can see, these bars are dense and chewy, almost like a “fruit” based bar made with fig. They are a bit sticky too!

Peanut Butter Cookie Dough– Mmmmm. Nice peanut butter flavor. It has some sort of sweet, semi caramelish feel to it. It was chewy and super soft, with little pieces of nuts in the bar. I can definitely get a peanut butter cookie dough vibe from it though! Like a batter before peanut butter cookies are made, but less sweet. However, there is definitely a consistency thing going on here. It’s hard to explain but there is this “leftover” piece-y type feel on the tongue. Like the bar has broken down and leaves a residue behind. I think it’s from the pea protein that is used to make the bar, but I could be wrong. In this case, taste outweighs texture for me. 4 out of 5 stars

Blueberry Cobbler– This one is sweet and fruity!! I enjoyed the blueberry flavor, it was a mixture of a fresh blueberry feel alongside sweet and chewy dried blueberries. You can’t taste any protein flavor, so that is a plus. I liked the flavor, but again, that texture thing is prevalent here. It’s like I can “feel” the protein, because I am positive this is from the pea protein. A good bar, however. 3 1/2 stars

Mint Chocolate Chip-  As a caveat, I am not a huge mint chocolate chip fan. I like Extra mint chocolate chip gum, and that’s about it. But I remained open minded about this bar. There are little pieces of cacao nibs in this bar which add a little crunch. It honestly tasted like a York peppermint patty, but in protein bar form. The consistency issue was NOT as bad here, still prevalent, but not as bad. The mint flavor is also pretty strong. Perhaps you can get a breath freshening while you dose up on your protein for the day (kidding). Given that I don’t generally like this flavor combination, I would still give it a 3 1/2 star rating.

Overall, not bad. I think the formula needs some tweaking. Personally, the consistency thing isn’t really an issue for me, as I go for nutrition and flavor over texture. For some it might be an issue. I think you have to pick your battles here though, the nutritional facts are pretty good AND these bars are vegan as well as dairy free, so they are limited with their protein sources. I can appreciate this company, so kudos D’s Naturals! I look forward to trying your products in the future, and maybe picking up some of those pb cookie dough bars if I see them 🙂

I received this item for free. This is an unbiased review.

Time for a review…of my absolute kryptonite! Peanut butter!

Seriously though…I can refuse any baked good in front of me, but put a jar of peanut butter and a spoon nearby, and you’ll find me melting.

I go through the temptation  thoughts like Spongebob with water when he visits Sandy for the first time.
“I don’t need it…
I don’t need it…
I DEFINITELY don’t need it…

… I   N E E D   IT !!! ”

But, alas, here I am reviewing two peanut butters from Pacific Beach. I will say I DID practice portion control, measured on my scale, and then left the jar in the other room so I didn’t finish a jar in 2 days (I made it to 3!!! [just kidding!])

The first one up- the “Our Signature” peanut butter spread.
2 tbsp is 152 calories, 12 g fat (3 saturated), 51 mg sodium, 9 grams carbs, 1 gram fiber, 6 grams sugar,  4 grams protein.
This one is gluten free (WAS gluten free I should say…that jar is long gone)
This…was unbelievable. I’m not going to lie, I am biased with peanut butter bc well I love peanut butter, but THIS was SO GOOD. It was sweet and creamy, but also had bits of peanuts in it so it had a bit of a crunch. It had a white chocolate flavor to it, was a bit buttery tasting..UGH it was SO GOOD! It had the perfect balance of sweetness too-not too sweet where it felt sugary. Just right. The only thing that kept my guilt at bay was it was 152 calories for 2 Tbsp as opposed to the usual 190 cals. WOO!!
5 stars

Next up, the Organic Valencia peanut butter.
2 tbsp is 168 calories, 14 g fat (2 saturated), 58 mg sodium, 6 grams carbs, 1 gram fiber, 7 grams protein.

This one was also tasty, although definitely more moderate in flavor. I think it could have used a tad more salt, and was a teeny bit bland. But, still a good peanut butter. Again, it was creamy but also had chunks of peanuts in it giving it a bit of a crunch. A nice thick spread, that could easily be spread on bread or eaten from the jar (somehow I always dangerously choose the latter…). I think this is a good nut butter to pair with jelly on a sandwich bc it’s a good base. This one is gluten free and sugar free. I almost wish it had a pinch of sugar or something to bring out more flavor. 3 1/2 stars.

Overall, some tasty treats! I would love to try more from Pacific Beach, because I think their other flavors sounds phenomenal as well. However, currently trying to lean out for summer and I have NO self control around this stuff…bc it is too damn good.

How many of you are peanut butter addicts like myself? It’s so good it hurts!! D:

Chocolite Chocolate Crispy Caramel

Author: Healthnuttxo

I happen to be a fan of some of the products made by Chocolite. Some of the ones I tried have been sugar free and a tasty option for me compared to standard chocolate. Along with the others I was sent for free to try, I also received the Chocolate Crispy Caramel candies. There are 2 of them in a pack, and rather decently sized. They were bumpy in consistency and covered with chocolate.

I took a bite of one of the candies and noticed it had a slight crunch to it- perhaps this is where the “Crispy” part comes from in the name. It was sweet and very chewy from the caramel. I have a love/hate relationship with caramel. I like the flavor, but too much of it turns me off because it’s so chewy! However, these chocolates had just the right amount of caramel to give it flavor, without making me chew too much. The chocolate on the outside was smooth and tasted like milk chocolate. I noticed as I ate these they had somewhat of a salty flavor to them- I NEEDED a glass of water!

Overall, pretty good.  I liked that they were sugar free and had 6 grams of fiber per piece! 4 stars.

Are you a fan of caramel? If so, what’s your favorite food/treat involving caramel?

1 piece is 30 calories, 2 grams of fat, 8 grams of carbohydrates, 0 grams of sugar, 1 gram of sugar alcohols, 6 grams of fiber and 1 gram of protein.

Chocolite Peanut Butter Protein Bar

Author: Healthnuttxo

I hope we all know my love with peanut butter by now, as it’s creamy, salty, savory, and just  delicious. And when paired with chocolate? What could be BETTER?! How about when it’s gluten free, sugar free AND has protein? Hmm… I like the sound of that!

The other day I was hungry, and in the mood for something both savory and sweet. So I grabbed this bar, and decided to give it a try. I opened it up and saw a somewhat thin bar, coated with chocolate. I took a bite and was very surprised. Peanut Butter? Where!?!

After I chewed it for a while, I did taste a slight bit of a peanut-ty aftertaste, but no where near what I had hoped and expected to taste. In my opinion, this was a chocolate covered caramel bar, with a little bit of peanut flavor. The chocolate was sweet, and the caramel was chewy but not too chewy-so pretty good. It was tasty, but a bit of a disappointment for me as I was really hoping for some delicious peanut butter!

Overall, I give this 3  stars. It’s a good bar, especially if you like caramel and chocolate, but I really wanted some more peanut butter flavor! Like those delicious peanut butter cup patties I had from Chocolite before! I do like that it was sugar free and gluten free, as well as providing a good amount of protein as well.

What’s your favorite Protein Bar? Please leave me a comment below! 🙂

1 bar is 100 calories, 4 grams of fat, 17 grams of carbohydrates, 10 grams of fiber, 0 grams of sugar ( 4 grams of sugar alcohols)  and  9 grams of protein.

*I was given this bar to try for free from Health Smart Foods/ Chocolite*

Chocolite Chocolate Candies

Author: Healthnuttxo

Time for a CHOCOLATE review!

Chocolite made by Health Smart Foods

The company sent me a few of their products to try, and then have quite the selection! I decided to feature the Peanut Butter Cup Patty (how could I not try that one?!), the Chocolate Pecan Cluster, and the Chocolate Coconut Almond candies.

Peanut Butter Cup Patty– WOAH. HOW IS THIS ONLY 40 CALORIES EACH? This is so, good! Each patty has a smooth layer of milk chocolate on top, and on the inside is peanut buttery bliss. Seriously- it’s so yummy. Slightly salty and a little crunchy, the inside is the best part 4 1/2 stars

Chocolate Pecan Cluster- ooohhh, if you like caramel you will like these! A very strong caramel flavor, mixed with smooth and sweet milk chocolate. Very satisfying, gooey and soft. The caramel was VERY chewy and sticky, almost like taffy! However, I didn’t really taste any pecan flavor? Where was it, exactly? But other than that- a creamy treat for sure. I shared my pack with another, and she was begging for more! 3 1/2 stars

Chocolate Coconut Almond- Very strong coconut flavor, with little flakes of coconut throughout the candy. Sweet milk chocolate on the outside. Again- no real almond flavor, per se, but so good. I’m not even a big fan of coconut, and this one’s a hit with me! 4 1/2 stars

Overall- I like these!

Power of Fruit frozen Fruit Bars

Author: Healthnuttxo

Nothing screams summer like ICE POPS! I used to LOVE those Fla Vor-Ices, the long skinny ice pops that came in bright colors like blue, purple, green, yum!

Well, I’m sure those weren’t the healthiest option, but no worries, I may have found a substitution! The Power of Fruit makes similar ice pops to Fla Vor Ice’s, that have no corn syrup, no HFCS, no added sugar, and no preservatives. Each bar contributes to 1/2 of a fruit serving as well. They come in 3 flavors, Banana Berry, Tropical, and All Fruit, and are a little bit smaller than Fla Vor Ice’s length wise, but are thicker and rounder width-wise. Ron, at the Power of Fruit, sent me some pops to try. Thanks, Ron!

All Fruit- The ice pop is very “piecey”. There are definite visible chunks of fruit, like strawberry, raspberry and blueberry. Blueberry was the predominant flavor I had tasted, and overall, it wasn’t that sweet. It literally tasted like when you freeze fruit and eat it frozen. It had that slushy consistency that isn’t super sweet, but still good.

Banana Berry- this one was better, not as “piecey”, and more solid. It had a good blend of sweet and tangy with the banana and strawberry flavors mixing. You could actually smell the banana which was kind of nice when you opened the ice pop. Cool! This one also, not super sweet, but mellow fruity flavors. Tastes like nature intended.

Overall, 3 1/2 stars. While I love the idea of an all-fruit,  no sugar added pop, I hate to say the taste isn’t as yummy as a Fla Vor Ice. However, they are still pretty good, provide fiber, and super low calorie. I think these would be a good swap if you have no frozen fruit, but want to make a smoothie. Just plop one right in your blender with some yogurt and juice, and your good to go! These are also great for kids- hey, if you start them off without all the sugar, they won’t develop a nasty sweet tooth!

All Fruit– 1 bar is 28 calories, .12 grams of fat, 7 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and .3 grams of protein.

Strawberries, Cranberries, Blueberries, Mango Chunks, Pineapple, Bananas, White Grape Juice Concentrate, Water.

Banana Berry-1 bar is 27 calories, .12 grams of fat, 6.5 carbohydrates, .9 grams of fiber, and .36 grams of protein.

Strawberries, Bananas, Strawberry Jucie Concentrate.

So I was sent in the mail and asked to review Halls Refresh Drops courtesy of Mike Pampalone. (thanks, Mike!) Halls are not all natural and are sweetened with artificial sweetners, but I decided to do the review anyway.

Halls typically makes Cough Drops- but the new Refresh drops are not for a cough, but to moisten and refresh your mouth. They are sugar-free and diabetic friendly, and come in 3 flavors Juicy Strawberry, Tropical Wave, and Refreshing Mint. I was sent the Juicy Strawberry and Tropical Wave flavors to try.

Each of the little samples came with 2 drops per package. The drops were oval in shape and you can actually see little “moisture beads” in the drop. Cool!  Both of them had a “minty” after taste that definietly will “wetten your whistle” and keep your mouth cool. They in fact, were, smooth tasting and refreshing! Especially good to keep my attention focused when my mind starts to wander (can we say boring College Calculus classes? I can. YUCK) I prefered the Tropical Wave over Juicy Strawberry. The Tropical Wave flavor was sweeter than the Juicy Strawberry, and more candy like than cough drop. It had a mix of an orangey/citrus flavor. The Juicy Strawberry had a mellow strawberry flavor, and wasn’t too sweet as I had anticipated from a candy. Overall, these aren’t bad. My mom really enjoyed them and kept asking for more after I let her try one (git your own!! 😛 )

Each Drop is 6 calories, and 3 grams of carbohydrates. No fiber, fat, or protein.

Juicy Strawberry:
Isomalt; Less than 2% of: Acesulfame Potassium, Beta Carotene, Blue 1, Blue 2, Natural and Artificial Flavoring.

True Lemon Naturally Sweet Lemonade Mix

Author: healthnuttxo

lem2

Water. So good for us. Sometimes it just hits the spot and is refreshing as it, but sometimes we need to step it up a notch. So…

Finally! A healthy alternative to Crystal Light without artificial sweetners, colors or preservatives! True Lemon Naturally Sweet lemonade mix packets takes the cake! It sweetened naturally with Truvia, which is sweetner with natural Stevia, and evaporated cane juice. Like Crystal Light On-the-Go packets, it has 5 calories per serving (2 servings in a stick). It also has 25% daily vitamin C needs.

As for the taste- delicious! You can make it as light or strong as you want, but it has a good, strong lemony taste. It tastes genuine or real, which is, in my opinion, how lemonade SHOULD taste. It tastes like you actually squeezed some lemons, added water and some sweetner and viola! Lemonade. I hope True Lemon comes out with more flavors like lime or orange, because they also make crystalized lemon, lime and orange packets for seasoning/teas/ etc.

Not many ingredients in here-that’s a good thing!

Citric Acid, Evaporated Cane Juice, Lemon Oil, Lemon Juice, Rebiana (Truvia), Guar Gum, Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C), Natural Color.
