I got some yummy Perky Fruit Bodies to try! What is that, you say? These are organic, raw, vegan, gluten free, and kosher “fruit leathers”.

Let’s get to it! ^-^

IMG_7575

Coconut Banana– this one is squished!

IMG_7576The color and appearance isn’t appetizing, but we always go beyond that for food reviews! The flavor is OK. Banana and coconut flavor is strong, the banana provides the natural sweetness, and tastes like an over-ripened banana. It is dry, and a bit flaky. It is not “sticky” like you would picture a “fruit roll up”, and is more like a natural fruit leather, but still on the drier side. It’s alright. 2 1/2 stars

Strawberry Banana– this one is good!

IMG_7578Tangy from the strawberries, and sweet from the banana. Tastes like a strawberry banana smoothie in fruit leather form. It is a bit chewier than the Coconut Banana, and more held together, which I like. It has a bit of a “rip” to it when you bite it. I would eat this one again. 4 star

Cacao Banana Coconut-  this one I also like.

IMG_7577The cacao flavor is pretty strong, but it gives a chocolate covered banana flavor to it. Good amount of sweetness. The Cacao gives almost a dark chocolate feel as well. The coconut flavor is very mild, and lacking, but I don’t mind because I think it tastes good the way it is. Chewy and has a nice “rip” to it…I like this one! 4 star

Overall, not bad! They run 60-130 calories each, ranging from 14-18 carbs and 0-7 grams of fat depending on the flavor. I think they would go great as a pre workout snack, as you are getting a boost of energy from the sugars from the fruits, and they are light enough where they will not make you feel sluggish during a workout. I also like how they are individually wrapped and easy to bring with you on the go. You can view nutritional information below.

Culturelle Advanced Immune Defense

Author: Healthnuttxo

Well, this product couldn’t have come at a more perfect timing. Everyone knows the scenario…Fall comes around and all of a sudden, everyone is SICK!! Like out of no where, germs fly all over the place and suddenly everyone around you either has a cold, Strep or the big one…the FLU!!!

I was offered to try this product by Culturelle, a supplement for immunity support. It contains a probiotic, Vitamin C, Zinc, and antioxidants.  We are advised to take one per day, for adults and children 12 years and up. This product is free of gluten, dairy, lactose, wheat, soy and preservatives.

I have taken probiotics before and took them before trying this 10 day trial. When starting any new product there may be some bloating or side effects.

These pills are harder than I imagined, most of my other probiotics were in softer, more flexible capsules. They aren’t too large, and they are easy to swallow. I was just getting over a cold when I started taking these. I noticed no change in recovery time, but this is immune DEFENSE so I didn’t expect it to help an already existing cold.

I was a little bloated and gassy on this supplement. I had some mild nausea. I do not think the nausea was from the pill. I have nausea daily and I need a strong probiotic to keep in under control. The probiotic part of this pill was not strong enough for me, and the bloating was consistent throughout the 10 days.

At the end of my 10 day trial, I contracted another cold. I work at a gym, I workout at a gym, and I go to class in public places with sick people. This is not expected to be a miracle pill. but I found it ironic I took a immunity defense pill and I got another cold a week after recovering from one.
IMG_6115

Overall, I probably wouldn’t use this in the future. I need a stronger probiotic (this one claims to have 2.5 Billion CFUs of Lactobacillus GG) and the immune part either was ineffective, or a 10 day trial wasn’t long enough to see real results. Overall… I like the idea of this supplement, but the effectiveness…It’s OK… 2 1/2 stars

The lovely folks over at Snyder of Berlin sent me a package of some yummy potato chips! I will be honest, I am not a HUGE chip eater…not because I don’t find them delicious, but because I would rather eat a snack that will fill me up. However, BBQ flavored chips happen to be my favorite, so I certainly could not pass these up!

Naturally...I tried the Honey Bar-B-Q first 🙂

These were a sweet BBQ flavor! The honey here definitely was a star. They were crunchy, yet crispy, sweet yet middle salty, and overall just delicious. These are almost a perfect BBQ chip for me. If you prefer sweeter over spicier or saltier BBQ chips, you will definitely enjoy these. I had to give the rest of the bag to my dad…couldn’t stop taking handfuls from the bag!! (and this is why I don’t buy chips often! 😉 ) These babies are also gluten free. 4 1/2 stars
IMG_5661

Next up, the Vlasic Dill Pickle flavored chips!

To be fair, I do not really like pickles. I pick them off my cheeseburgers, and I refuse them at diners. I think you are either a pickle person, or you are not, and I would consider myself not a pickle person.

However…despite my apprehension, I can appreciate the flavor of these chips. My whole family was a bit weirded out too. My dad first refused to try any, my brother thought they would be too weird,  but my mom decided to be the guinea pig and try them first. She loved them! Dad went up next…he loved them! My brother tried some…walked away…and came back for more. I guess you could say they were a hit!

I was not super fond of them, but again, they were a favorite with 3 other pickle people 🙂

The vinegar flavor I found a bit strong, as it had a bit of a sour feel. They tasted almost identical to a Vlasic pickle. They were salty, crispy and crunchy. I will admit they grew on me, and I had more than I had expected (curse you, chips!!! Evil deliciousness!!!). Both of my parents decided it would be awesome on a sandwich instead of a pickle…like a deli type of sandwich. Combining my personal feelings with my family, I will give these 4 stars for a pickle person, 3 for a non pickle person.

The nutritional information is listed below. Overall, I think these are worth a try!

I am a huge fan of probiotics! Not only do I eat yogurt daily for the good bacteria for healthy digestion, I try to take a probiotic daily to help with my stomach issues. I have a very sensitive stomach and get nauseous and bloated easily, and I find I feel best when I take a probiotic.

I had definitely tried some probiotics in the past that were a total waste of money. These products are not cheap, and if it doesn’t help, then it’s such a let down!

I got to try a 10 day sample of RenewLife Ultimate Flora Probiotic. There are 12 probiotic strains in each pill, with 50 BILLION live cultures in one teeny capsule!! They are Gluten free, GMO free, dairy free, egg free, shellfish free, wheat free and tree nut free. They do not require refrigeration, just to be stored at a cool place.

I took one of these capsules before breakfast each morning. The first day I felt about the same. The second morning I woke up and felt not as bloated, and had an elevated mood. Possible to be coincidence for the mood, but I will not lie I had a hectic morning and still felt pretty good that day.

As the 10 days progressed, I literally fell in love with this probiotic. I felt way less bloated, and I was even on my PMS week where the bloat is freaking awful. I was regulated, my nausea was reduced, I felt lighter and indeed a little more energetic. I had zero problems with this probiotic. As with any new supplement, there can sometimes be bloating or weird side effects if you just start, but I had none. I really enjoyed it!

Overall, this one gets 5 stars from me. I will buy this in the future since sadly, my 10 day samples have run out! 🙁

NOW you can get a chance to try a 10 day sample! Open to US only. Giveaway closes September 15th 2016, 12 pm.

Outer Spice Original & Spicy seasonings

Author: Healthnuttxo

image

I got these spices to try from Outer Spice! I was sent two varieties, the No Salt Spicy version, and the Himilayan Sea Salt Original blend. They have a retail value of roughly $6.99 each.  They are MSG, GMO and Gluten Free, and made from high quality spices and herbs.

I used these a few times during cooking. We made chicken cutlets with the Spicy variety, and then I used the Original variety for turkey burgers (see below), shrimp garlic stir fry, and grilled chicken with veggies in a butter sauté.

imageI’ll review the Spicy variety first!

It was…not spicy actually!
Again, we made chicken cutlets with this spice mixed into breadcrumb mixture and fried.
I noticed that the thyme flavor was pretty strong. Again, it was not salty- no salt!
The flavor was unique and went well with the chicken but it wasn’t spicy, so a bit deceiving! 3 1/2 star

Next up, the Original blend.

It was very thyme-y again, with possibly Rosemary?
Not much other prominent flavors, but will enjoyable.
It went well with the meats, and my favorite was with the shrimp and grilled chicken stir frys. I did add some salt since it was not super salty. 4 stars.

Overall, pretty good and worth a try! I would pick em up and add them to your favorite dishes! If you order directly from their website, there is also FREE shipping! Woo! Click here to get some.

Probiotics are super important in anyone’s diet. They help keep your immune system working well as well as your colon and bowels happy with a healthy flora of bacteria. They are especially recommended for people on Antibiotics a lot, since those medications wipe out ALL bacteria, both good and bad, in your gut, and the good bacteria is NEEDED in order to function properly!

I got Bio-K PLUS Fermented Dairy Probiotic in the Strawberry variety. The package came with 6 tiny 3.5 ounce bottles, each with 4 servings each (or less depending on your personal dosage). The bottle recommends 1/4-1 bottle per day. The recommendation is in rather small letters so I am glad I read everything throughly before consuming, as I definitely would have just had the whole thing at once, like I am sure most people might do (like my mother for example…never reads!!!).

Each bottle is 60 calories, and according to the box, has 50 live billion bacteria! They are gluten free, corn free, GMO and yeast free. You are instructed to shake vigorously before consumption. This I find weird, bc then they should have come with tops that I can close. How am I supposed to shake it later if I am only having half a bottle per day?

IMG_4481

Anywho, how does it taste? It smells like a strawberry yogurt, but not as strong. The flavor is also strong…it is very tart…but not bad. I would advise taking baby sips of this and now a whole mouthful. It tastes like very tart strawberries, unripened, but the “milky-ness” of the dairy makes it so you do not pucker as you would with the tartness of a sour candy. It has some sweetness to it, which is good, but sour is definitely the predominant flavor. NOT like sour milk sour, more like tart-sour candy sour. It’s an odd flavor…but I kind of like it.

Overall, I think this is a good way to take a probiotic. You can get roughly 12 servings out of it if you drink half a bottle per day (or 24 if you drink 1/4). I am drinking half per day, and not peeling the green foil back all the way so I can “reseal” so I can shake it later. The flavor is totally doable for kids too- I would tell them it’s Sour Strawberry flavor so they know to expect a semi sour patch kid flavor with strawberries. Easy way for them to take probiotics, especially those who do not like to swallow pills.

Overall, a good product. A few kinks, but I like it. 4 stars

Alrighty! So I got Doctor’s Best EstroG-100 Menopausal Support Supplement to try courtesy of the company, but…I am NOT going through menopause (that would be kind of evil in my 20s, right?…actually it’s rather evil in general!). So, I passed this supplement along to a person who is going through menopause and is a very trust source. She experiences hot flashes, irritability, mood swings, and night sweats. As a disclaimer, she was already taking Black Cohosh supplement and did not want to discontinue it. So these supplements were taken at the time time.

The bottle contains 30 pills, and you take one per day. They are NON-GMO and Gluten free.

IMG_2668

According to the bottle, they provide “Relief from hot flashes, helps [to] manage mood & energy swings, [and] helps [to] alleviate night sweats and promotes restful sleep”.

She has been on the supplement for almost a month. She claims the pills are easy to swallow, despite their semi large appearance, and do not repeat on her or cause any GI distress.

Has she still had hot flashes? Yes, but she said they have decreased in intensity. Not frequency, but the intensity has decreased. This is a good thing!

Has she still had irritability? Yes, she reports still being irritable and having mood swings.

Has she had night sweats? Yes, but she said they have also decreased in intensity.

Has she had relieved sleep? No, she reports no change in sleeping patterns (but she has always been an anxious sleeper, and this can’t really be blamed on menopause alone).

Overall, I asked how many stars would she rate the product out of 5, and she said 3. It did help, but not to an extent she had hoped for.

So, if you are going through menopause, perhaps this supplement is worth a try! Menopause is never a fun thing, so if you know someone going through it, maybe offer an extra hug or an extra cookie will help alongside a supplement too 🙂

3 stars

Go Macro Macrobar Mini review & Giveaway!

Author: Healthnuttxo

IMG_2642 IMG_2641

The nice peeps over at Go Macro sent me a variety box filled of their Macrobar mini bars! They are also kind enough to offer a free box to one of you lucky readers 🙂

These bars are organic, soy free, vegan, and kosher. Each bar that I tried was also macrobiotic and gluten free as well. Each of the mini bars is roughly 100-130 calories, and some of them have a nice bit of protein (4 grams or so), making them the perfect little snack, or pre workout boost.

So…let’s get started! Each bar is roughly the length of a pack of Trident gum and a little wider.

IMG_3408

Sesame and Dates

I kind of like it…it has that strong aftertaste that sesame provides, but the dates mellow it out. I feel like it might have went better with raisins, but dates are good. The bar is coated with little sesame seeds, is chewy, and not too sweet other than the bites with date, which are scattered throughout. It’s not bad, I can dig it. 3 stars

Banana almond butter

Chewy, can taste banana flavor. It is kind of bland tho…needs a little sweetness. I can taste some type of spice…cinnamon or nutmeg. I do like the flavor combo, it reminds me of a banana walnut ish muffin type of flavor. However, I wish it was a tad sweeter, but not bad! 3 stars

Pb chocolate chip

I like this one. Again, a muted sweetness. Tastes like a granola bar but not as sweet as commercial brands. You can taste the brown rice syrup used to sweeten the bar, which also gives it a chewy texture. The peanut butter flavor is yummy, but not overpowering, and mild. The chocolate chips are scarce, but on the larger side, and are mild in sweetness but add a nice touch. There are also tiny peanuts in the bar for a little baby crunch. I like this bar. 4 stars

Here’s nutritional information for one of the bars- they are “roughly” the same for the other bars, but not exact.

Alright!

So a friend of mine told me about this brand called D’s Naturals. I personally never heard of them or have seen them in store, so I went to their website to check them out. I got the opportunity to try some of their No Cow bars, in 3 varieties- the Mint Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter Cookie Dough,  and Blueberry Cobbler.

What makes these bars special?

They are gluten free, vegan, dairy free, soy free, no sugar added, lactose free, and non GMO according to the label. They run roughly 170 calories per bar, with 20 grams of protein and 19 grams of fiber. They are sweetened with Erythritol, not sugar.

These were appealing to me, especially as a Type 1 Diabetic. I CANNOT have added sugar…well I mean I *can* but, it doesn’t lead to pretty blood sugars. However, protein bars are usually chock full of sugar (and sugar is also HONEY, CANE JUICE, do not be fooled!). These also appealed to me since they had a good dose of fiber and protein, so I would have optimal blood sugar regulation as well as being, well, full!

Here’s a sneak peek of the Mint Chocolate Chip Bar:IMG_2221

As you can see, these bars are dense and chewy, almost like a “fruit” based bar made with fig. They are a bit sticky too!

Peanut Butter Cookie Dough– Mmmmm. Nice peanut butter flavor. It has some sort of sweet, semi caramelish feel to it. It was chewy and super soft, with little pieces of nuts in the bar. I can definitely get a peanut butter cookie dough vibe from it though! Like a batter before peanut butter cookies are made, but less sweet. However, there is definitely a consistency thing going on here. It’s hard to explain but there is this “leftover” piece-y type feel on the tongue. Like the bar has broken down and leaves a residue behind. I think it’s from the pea protein that is used to make the bar, but I could be wrong. In this case, taste outweighs texture for me. 4 out of 5 stars

Blueberry Cobbler– This one is sweet and fruity!! I enjoyed the blueberry flavor, it was a mixture of a fresh blueberry feel alongside sweet and chewy dried blueberries. You can’t taste any protein flavor, so that is a plus. I liked the flavor, but again, that texture thing is prevalent here. It’s like I can “feel” the protein, because I am positive this is from the pea protein. A good bar, however. 3 1/2 stars

Mint Chocolate Chip-  As a caveat, I am not a huge mint chocolate chip fan. I like Extra mint chocolate chip gum, and that’s about it. But I remained open minded about this bar. There are little pieces of cacao nibs in this bar which add a little crunch. It honestly tasted like a York peppermint patty, but in protein bar form. The consistency issue was NOT as bad here, still prevalent, but not as bad. The mint flavor is also pretty strong. Perhaps you can get a breath freshening while you dose up on your protein for the day (kidding). Given that I don’t generally like this flavor combination, I would still give it a 3 1/2 star rating.

Overall, not bad. I think the formula needs some tweaking. Personally, the consistency thing isn’t really an issue for me, as I go for nutrition and flavor over texture. For some it might be an issue. I think you have to pick your battles here though, the nutritional facts are pretty good AND these bars are vegan as well as dairy free, so they are limited with their protein sources. I can appreciate this company, so kudos D’s Naturals! I look forward to trying your products in the future, and maybe picking up some of those pb cookie dough bars if I see them 🙂
