Jungle Grub Gluten Free Snack Bars

Author: Healthnuttxo

Now who can turn down a snack called “Jungle Grub” with a cute MONKEY on it? I certainly couldn’t!

OrganicNutrition sent me 3 boxes of their “Jungle Grub” snack bars, that come in Berry Bamboozle, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Peanut Butter Groove. Each bar is gluten free, 100 calories, a good source of  both vitamin C and calcium, and of course, organic! I was excited to try these- 3 of my favorite things- fruit (berries), chocolate chip cookie dough, and peanut butter! How could these NOT be good? 🙂

Well, I’ll admit I was a bit disappointed upon opening the box. These bars are TINY!!! I would say about the size of a business card in length (but thicker of course). Certainly won’t satisfy the hungry monster I like to call my stomache. But, I decided to try them anyway. After all, Im not one to judge based soley on size 😉

Berry Bamboozle-  this one has a layer of vanilla icing on top, and berry flavor on bottom. It’s dense and chewy, kind of like a mix of an all-fruit bar and those protein bars. It had a nice berry flavor, like cranberry and raspberry put together, and was actually quite sweet. 3 1/2 stars

Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough- this bar as a whole reminded me of a less sweet version of cookie dough- but still yummy. The mini chocolate chips were TOO cute- itty bitty and tasty! It’s a shame it was so small becuase it really is quite good, but I gobbled it up in about 2 seconds! 4 stars

Peanut Butter Groove– this one was the chewiest of the 3, almost like taffy! It even stuck to the wrapper a little bit. It did have more body and was tastier than the other two. It had little crispies in it, and coated with a vanilla icing. It was more of a “sweet” peanut taste- like Better N’ Peanut Butter (if you ever had that product before). It also kind of reminded me of a typical “peanut butter” energy bar- more sweet than savory. 4 stars

Overall, not bad. But definietly geared toward children more than adults. I can see maybe having one of these with some yogurt or fruit as a snack, but definietly not by itself. It would also be a nice “sweet treat” on the side of a meal, that’s healthier and better than, say a donut or piece of chocolate. What I also didn’t really like was that they are a bit high in sugar- about 8 grams per bar, which doesn’t seem like much, but the bar isn’t that big.  It also only provided 1 gram of fiber each. On the bright side, each provides 15-20% of your daily calcium needs and 20 % vitamin C. Woop! 🙂

Each bar is 100 calories, 3.5-4 grams of fat, 13-14 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 8 grams of sugar, and 4 grams of protein.

For information on the ingredients of each bar, visit the website 🙂

Dont Forget about the YOUBAR giveaway!!

What’s better than a slice of steaming hot apple or cherry pie? Yea, I couldn’t think of anything either 😉 (except if it’s topped with some vanilla frozen yogurt- a la mode!!)

Organic Food Bar has several types of bars that are all organic, all healthy, and according to the website, “outrageously good”! The company sent me a few of their bars to try, like the Cherry Pie flavored Bar, and the Apple Pie Bar was purchased. What’s cool about these is a portion of the proceeds spent on the bars goes to support local schools- nice! These bars are preservative free, have no trans fats, are unprocessed, no artificial ingredients, are dairy free, and have no high fructose corn syrup or refined sugars.

Each bar is a typical breakfast or granola bar size, but these bars do not have the typical texture. In fact, they have a fruity/chewy texture, similar to a PURE bar.

Cherry Pie- This one says Oohmega! on the cover, as it provides 1000 mg Omega 3’s per bar. Woop! It was lightly sweetened, almost bland at first. The flavor comes through after you chew it for a bit, and then you taste a bit of cherry. It’s not bad, but it’s a bit off. There are little oat pieces dispersed throughout, and it also has a funky “flaxseed” taste to it. Also, when you hold the bar, you get an oily texture left on your fingers- but the first ingredient is cashew butter, so that’s probably why. What I did like was that there was a delicious cherry chunk in the bar, that added some instant sweetness. Sadly, it didn’t remind me of  homemade cherry pie, and I give it 2 1/2.

Apple Pie- this one says Oooatmeal!  on the cover. I’m not sure why, but this one was much better. It had little pieces of apples dispersed throughout, and the cinnamon was a nice compliment to the bar. It was much sweeter than the Cherry flavored one, and actually did sort of remind me of Apple Pie! I wonder what it would taste like heated up in the microwave… I would eat this one again- 4 stars.

Overall, not bad. I’d like to try some of their other bars Organic Food Bar has to offer and give them a shot. I do like that these are unprocessed, contain  healthy fats, and are sweetened with agave rather than refined sugar. A nice change to a sugar laden granola bar every now and then!

Cherry Pie- 1 bar is 135 calories, 7 grams of fat, 15 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein.

Organic Cashew Butter, Organic Dates, Organic Agave Nectar, Organic Bio Sprouts Flax, Organic Cherries, Organic Oats, Organic Brown Rice Protein

Apple Pie- 1 bar is 139 calories, 5.5 grams of fat, 19 carbohydrates, 2.5 grams of fiber, and 3 grams of protein.

Organic Cashew Butter, Organic Dates, Organic Premium Agave Nectar, Organic Oats, Organic Apples, Organic Raisins, Organic Cinnamon

Can Do Nutrition/Energy Bars

Author: healthnuttxo

Hey guys- sorry it’s been a while. School, work and just a LOT to do lately. But I’m back, never fear!

CANNNDO

Can Do Energy/Nutrition bars are geared towards kids who live active lifestyles. The bar was forumlated to help active kids get the nutrition they need while eating something that was tasty as well. The slogan is “It’s not about age, it’s about attitude!” A Can Do Kid can do anything! Of course, these bars can be eaten by anyone, even the kid at heart (like myself!). They are all natural, contain no trans fats,  no high fructose corn syrup, have 17 vitamins & minerals, and are now gluten free.

The Can Do company sent me all three of the flavors, Chocolate Crunch, Cookies & Cream, and Canilla Vanilla. Each of the packages has 2 conveinent bars, so if you want “one now and one for later”, you can do that, or eat both at the same time for a super energy boost!

Cookies & Cream– This didn’t really taste “cookies & creamy” to me. It tasted more like a chocolate malt than the traditional cookies & cream flavor we are all used to. However, it was still tasty, and it sure was chocolatey! Coated in a layer of smooth chocolate, there was a crispy texture in the middle. The chocolate coating is a bit “crumby”, and it falls off as you bite it. It was sort of a cross between a chocolate bar and a luna bar with the texture, consistency and the taste.

Chocolate Crunch– this bar tasted pretty much like the Cookies & Cream flavor, but it was a bit sweeter. I liked this one better than the Cookies & Cream flavor, it had a deeper chocolate taste.

Canilla Vanilla– Yum! Now i like this one!! It was also coated with chocolate, but a white chocolate. I think it had a slight macadamia flavoring. If you’ve ever had the white chocolate macadamia bar by Luna, it tastes somewhat similar. This was the sweetest of the three bars, but not overpoweringly sweet. There also was a slight hint of a cinnamon taste.

Overall, i think these would be best when you need a protein boost or a good choice after a workout. To me, the taste was like a “healthy candy bar”. You can get your chocolate/sweet fix without un-doing your diet, and also get some vitamins and minerals as well. My only complaint is that they lack fiber, something I like to have in a bar. I will probably buy the Can-illa Vanilla flavor again, because i like the protein. I had one of these bars when my tummy was GRUMBLING, and it satisfied me nicely.

1 package (2 bars) is 170 calories, 5-6 grams of fat, 20-21 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, and 9 grams of protein.
