Crunchies Freeze Dried Fruit

I LOVE freeze dried fruit! Especially when there is no sugar or flavorings added, and you get to enjoy the goodness of fruit, with just a crunchy twist!

I was sent a few bags of freeze dried fruit from Crunchies.  These snacks are gluten free, NON-GMO certified, and have NOTHING added, just the fruit! Each bag comes with a zipper to keep fresh, and each bag contains about 3 servings of fruit. They come in Strawberry, Grape, Raspberry, Mixed Fruit, Blueberry, Pineapple, Strawberry Banana, and Cinnamon Apple.

The bags are delicious. I inhaled a bag per day when sampling these, all too easy. Since some of these are repeats (example: the mixed fruit contains banana, apple, strawberry, and blueberry), I am going to write how each fruit tasted.

Starting with my favorite, the Grapes. These were beyond delicious. SO sweet, but in a good way, and crunchy. They almost tasted candied! They were the purple grapes, and since freeze dried, also gave off a little bit of a raisin feel.

Next up, my second favorite, the Pineapple. Again, super crunchy, and large chunks of triangular shaped pineapple. Bursting with sweetness, and slight tartness, these were just so good right out of the bag. Imagine fresh, sweet pineapple…without the juice!

Next up, my third favorite, the Cinnamon Apples. Ohhh so so good! Light and airy, not as “crispy” as the other fruits, but sweet nonetheless. The cinnamon was a perfect accompaniment, and helped bring out the sweetness. I love apples, but every now and then you get a sour one. Not with these! They were super sweet, just like I like them, almost like a Gala apple.

Next up, the Blueberries. These I wasn’t crazy about, but was still pretty good. Blueberries can be hit or miss to me, sometimes sour, sometimes sweet, sometimes flavorless. These were mild in flavor, and a bit tart. I think they would be good in a plain yogurt or a cereal.

Next up, the Strawberries. These were too tart for me to eat by themselves. They came alone in a bag, and then also with Banana. The banana was sweet and mild in flavor, with a slight crunch, and it balanced out the tartness of the strawberries. Eaten together, I liked the mixture. Eaten apart, I loved the bananas, but didn’t care for the strawberries as they were too tart. I think they would be better in some cold cereal with milk.

Lastly, the raspberries. I am not a huge raspberry fan to begin with, and these are essentially identical to fresh raspberries, but without the juiciness. They were too tart for me, and didn’t provide much natural sweetness. I like rasperry flavored things more than I enjoy actual raspberries.

My only complaint was that for the mixed fruit and the strawberry banana bags, the strawberries were rather dominant over the other fruit.

Each bag had about 40 calories per serving with 1/4-1/2 cup serving each.

One caveat is that even though there is a zipper seal, they will go soft on you within a week or so. So eat em quick! Although I don’t see that as being a problem. Another drawback is that these are on the expensive side… 6 -1.2 oz bags (3 servings) costs about $30. I can easily inhale these so that is out of my price range :'(

Overall, pretty tasty! I would love to get more, especially of the pineapple, the apples, and the grapes!!

I have a unique relationship with cottage cheese. Some brands I love, and others I could do without. Sometimes I find it too tart and off-putting, and other times, like with the Friendship 1% Lowfat Cottage Cheese with Pineapple, I fall in love.

Yea I said it. Love. I LOVE this cottage cheese!

Upon first bite, I was greeted with a sweet tasting cottage cheese, with the fresh taste of pineapple as well. It was a small curd cottage cheese, although I did have an occasional big piece, that was soft yet chewy, and really delicious. It was sweet, but not in a way that it was overly sugary tasting, which I liked. I felt it was a very satisfying part of my breakfast, and I would certainly eat it again. In fact, I’m tempted to hide it in the back of my refrigerator so I don’t have to share! =P

Overall, I hope you saw this one coming, 5 stars. Guess I’m a fan of  products with pineapple in it! DELICIOUS!

Amazing Grass Kidz Super Food Wild Berry

Keeping up with my berry and fruity theme this week, I thought it would be appropriate to review a product sent to me by Amazing Grass, the Kidz Super Food Wild Berry .

One serving of this mix combines 32 fruits and vegetables that provides that antioxidant level of THREE servings of fruits & veggies. You simply mix it in water, juice, or a smoothie (it also comes in a chocolate flavor, that you can mix with milk!)

Seeing as the amazing nutrition punch this product packs, I decided to try it on a day I was feeling sluggish and just blah. I’m not one who likes to take medications , so I prefer more natural ways of helping or healing my body. I decided to just mix it with water, since I wasn’t home at the time and didn’t have access to juice (or a smoothie, for that matter). I put it in my water bottle and gave it a shake. It was green and dusty on top, and then the rest of the water was purple. I had a very curious glances my way like, “what on earth is she drinking?!?!” I’m not one to judge on color, so I took a sip. It was very, very mildly sweet- just a hint of berry flavor. It didn’t mix together perfectly, as it was still a bit piecy in the water.

I definitely reccommend using it in juice or a smoothie instead of just water, or maybe adding some stevia/sweetener if you want to use it in water. It wasn’t bad, though, taken for what it was. It’s an excellent way to boost your nutrition and fit in some powerful antioxidants. With water, I give it 3 1/2 stars based on taste, 5 for nutrition, for a total of 4 stars. It did make me feel SOO much better after- Really! My headache was gone, and I had more energy throughout the day. I think I might buy some in the future and try it in a smoothie or juice- if I do, I’ll let you know how it is!

Morning Star Farms Sweet & Sour Chik’n

Break out the ChopSticks, but DON’T pick up the phone to order Chinese take-out!!

I found a new meal that whoops traditional fast food “sweet & sour chicken’s” BUTT! 🙂

Morning Star Farms Sweet & Sour Chik’n is a veggie entree with chik’n nuggets, peppers, carrots and pineapple chunks all slathered in a sweet and tangy sauce, over a bed of whole grain brown rice.I know your drooling by now. I certainly was when I read the box at my supermarket- I just had to try it!

So after a nice bike ride on this beautiful 80 degree day, my muscles were tired and my stomach was hungry. I decided to pop this entree in the microwave, along with some steamed broccoli for extra veggies. I transfered the entree to a plate, and was surprised to see how much actually came out! This was a NICE sized dinner- no skimpy portions here! I probably didn’t even need the side of broccoli, but I’ll never turn down extra veggies 8)

Onto each component of the meal…

The Chik’n- the chik’n was wrapped in a soft and doughy tempura batter, that I actually enjoyed. It was a little mushy due to the sauce, but tasty nonetheless. The actual “meat” part had the same consistency of chicken, and was similar in taste. When isolated, I could definietely taste a combination of soy and chicken flavors, but when eated with the tempura batter and the sauce- you would never be able to tell it’s not real chicken! I also liked that these were big CHUNKS of chik’n. I got about 4-5 chunks in my entree (see pic below after I took a bite! 😉 )

The Sauce- TOTALLY makes the meal. It’s SO sweet (maybe even a tad bit too sweet- drink water with this meal), but I liked the sweetness, as it balanced the tang out nicely. There is a very strong pineapple/ketchup flavor, that blends nicely. There is also a TON of sauce- every component of this meal gets covered, no naked veggies or rice ! 🙂

The Veggies/Rice- this meal has primarily carrots, red, green & yellow peppers, and pineapple. The peppers and carrots were soft and tender, and went nicely with the meal. I loved the warm pineapple chunks- deeelish! Warm pineapple never fails, and it was juicy & sweet!  The rice was a tad bit chewy, but was actually quite good.

 Overall, don’t like the “chik’n” part of this meal scare you meat lovers (or veggie protein haters >:( ) away! This meal ROCKS! I give it 4 1/2 stars. It was filling, low in fat, and WAY better than Chinese Food. It was also relatively low in sodium for a frozen entree (550 mg, 23% daily values). The only reason this meal loses half a star is because there is only 4 grams of fiber ( I prefer my dinners to have at least a little more!), refined sugar (oh, man!), and contains some funky modified ingredients, like modified vegetable gum and modifed corn starch- “natural” per se, but not straight from the garden if you catch my drift.

Otherwise- this meal was carton-lickin’ GOOD!  You can bet all the sauce was GONE, and every morsel was eaten!! 🙂

1 entree is 340 calories, 6 grams of fat, 56 carbohydrates (12 sugars), 4 grams of fiber and 14 grams of protein.

O.N.E. Drinks

Time for my very first BEVERAGE review! Woo! I was lucky enough to receive a few samples from O.N.E. which stands for One Natural Experience. O.N.E. has a variety of drinks that are all natural and bursting with health benefits. They all come in cute little boxes, and mine has little straws attached to them as well. I love it when companies do that-so conveinent!! I decided to try the Coconut water with a splash of pineapple,  and the Water of Life varieties.
Let’s begin and start sipping away!
Coconut Water with Splash of Pineapple-  This was very REFRESHING. It has just the slightest hint of pineapple to jazz up the coconut water. It sort of had a thicker consistency than regular water, but didn’t really taste like coconut. Normally the coconut I would expect is like from coconut scented sprays or coconut cookies, but it was a much more mellow flavor with the pineapple to jazz it up. Refreshing!

Water a Gift of Life- this water is from a specific Natural Spring, and is totally purified and clean. To be honest, it tasted like bottle water to me. That’s a good thing though, very fresh, clean and crisp.

I reccommend these waters, as they are tasty and certainly refreshing. 4 stars!
