Alexia Waffle Cut Sweet Potato Fries

Oh yeaaaaa. Sweet potato fries. I saw these at Whole Foods and was immediately excited! Of course, at the time I didn’t take into account that I DONT have a pan to cook fries on at home, so these were purchased very quickly after discovering them at the store.

I say discovering because that’s what I feel like it’s like when I go to Whole Foods. I never actually know where ANYTHING is. Even when I normally get a few of the “regulars” in my shopping cart, sometimes the store changes, or I go to a different Whole Foods, or sometimes there are just foods that are “hidden” and need a little extra searching to find 🙂

ANYWAY (I like to go off on tangents apparently….), I made these Alexia Waffle Cut Sweet Potato Fries last nights with some chicken-less chicken nuggets (courtesy of Trader Joe’s), carrots, and way too much ketchup (oh well!).

I cheated a little bit. I didn’t follow the cooking instructions 100%, and put them on broil after it was cooking for a while. (I was hungry!)

My gut feeling said curly fries. My taste buds agreed.

Upon first bite, I thought, uhh? Did I buy curly fries? Are these really sweet potato fries?

Straight from the oven, these had crispy edges, with a softer middle, and were certainly quite greasy. There was a peppery flavor, which caused me to be suspicious that they were curly fries. They had a very mild sweet potato flavor, which really disappointed me! I didn’t want a peppery, savory tasting fry – I wanted a sweet potato fry!!! I think the “curly fry” aspect of the fry’s flavor came from the kick/ bit of spice they had. They also needed a pinch of salt (but really they didn’t, at 330 mg of sodium per serving!), which I think would help enhance the flavor of the sweet potato. They did go pretty well with ketchup, but, between the nuggets and these fries, I went through an awful lot of ketchup last night =P

Overall, these were ok. I liked they had some fiber and were relatively low in fat and calories for a serving. I dont think I would buy them again, but I’ll finish the bag. 3 stars

If you had to choose….. sweet potato fries or curly fries? I would pick sweet potato fries, but maybe this version instead (click here)

1 cup (85 grams) is 130 calories, 5 grams of fat, 330 mg sodium, 20 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, 4 grams of sugar, and 2 grams of protein.

I FINALLY went to Whole Foods yesterday, and got a bunch of awesome stuff! The person I went with only bought a few things (I’d say the ratio of my things to her things was like 50:1) , but she got some of the Terra Crinkles Sweet Potato Chips in the Candied Sweets variety. Driving home, I couldn’t wait to try them, since I’m a huge fan of sweet potatoes, and they sounded so yummy!

So I opened the bag, which was a big fail, since it completely ripped down the middle and was not picture-taking worthy after (oops!). I argued it wasn’t my fault the bag ripped so funny, I just opened it according to the little tear on top of the bag. I suppose it was my fault there was an enormous rip down the front of the bag, but oh well. At least the insides were safe. Which, speaking of, here’s what they looked like inside the bag

And here’s a pic of just one chip

Yeeeep. That picture was taken in the car (no worries, I wasnt the driver!).
I may have eaten these on the way home from Whole Foods…. I told you I couldn’t wait! (:

I tried one, and first noticed how hard and crunchy they were. As for the flavor, I must say, very lackluster. The first thing both the person I was with and I thought of was Thanksgiving mashed sweet potatoes. But, to be perfectly honest, these chips were not as good. They had a very strong sweet potato flavor, but  it almost tasted burnt. There was a light dusting of cinnamon flavor, and just the tiniest hint of salt and the tiniest hint of sweetness. I tried a couple more, and I wasn’t really a fan, nor was the person I was with.

Overall, 1 1/2 stars. I was really disappointed with these- I really wanted to like them! I feel as if they need to be sweeter and/or more cinnamon-y in flavor, or even more salty. They were rather bland and I really didn’t enjoy them. They are also high in fat, but I do like that they have some fiber, are low in sugar, and have 50% vitamin A needs per serving.

What’s your favorite way to eat a sweet potato? I must say, sweet potato fries always win me over =)

I managed to not rip the part of the bag with the nutrition label on it. Woo!

Food Should Taste Good Tortilla Chips

Food Should Taste Good- unless why  bother eating it?
That’s what comes to mind when I thought of these flavored tortilla chips. Flavored? you ask. Yep! They come in a bazillion (okay, not that many, more like eleven) varieties, ranging from chocolate to lime. Yum! They are also all natural, gluten free, a good source of fiber, and made without any GMO’s.

I was sent these delicious tortilla chips in the mail from the company, and after eating them,  I will not be going back to regular chips anytime soon! Of the ones I was sent, I tried the Cinnamon, Sweet Potato, and Chocolate  Flavors provided so generously by Food Should Taste Good.

anyway-
Cinnamon- These weren’t quite what I expected. I was expecting a sweet cinnamon sugar chip-instead what I got was a very strong corn flavor with a hint of ground cinnamon. Now sweet cinnamon as I had expected. It is slightly sweet, but no where near a dessert sugary sweet.

Sweet Potato- this flavor tricks you! At first I was like “oh, normal flavor, where’s the sweet potato?”. But after-! You get the sweet aftertaste of a sweet potato! It has a very smooth flavor and just the right amount of salt. I like to think it’s one of the healthier ones because I’m technically eating 2 veggies at once- corn & sweet potatoes 😛

Chocolate- This one was my favorite, and not what I expected. I thought it was honestly going to taste funky, but it was actually really good! The flavor is caught between a chocolate graham cracker and a tortilla chip. It’s salty at first, then you taste the corn tortilla, and then a dark chocolate flavor shines through. It was very good, and left that “I just ate CHOCOLATE” flavor in my mouth.

Overall, I give these 4 stars. They are a healthier alternative to potato chips, have some rather interesting flavors & pack some fiber as well. They can also be combined with various spreads and dips to create really-good concoctions. Let me know if you have any of your own!!

The ingredients are also pretty much the same for all, with spices and extra flavors added depending on the variety. Check the website here if you are interested.
