Do you like coffee for the taste, or the caffeine? What if you like both? Then I have a treat for you! New Grounds Food has come out with a product called Eat Your Coffee , Coffee Bar which comes in Coconut Mocha and Caramel Macchiato flavors. There is 1 cup of coffee in each bar, and each bar is also made with fair trade coffee, is vegan and gluten free, and organic!

Let’s get started!

Caramel Macchiato

This one has a bit of a bitter and strong coffee flavor. Most of the sweetness comes from the dates, and the date taste is prominent. The caramel flavor is lacking. There are some dark chocolate chips which are smooth and sweet, and very good. The texture is chewy and a bit dense, and somewhat “grainy”. It’s pretty good.

Coconut Mocha

This one is dense and chewy, and has a date flavor. Again, there are a lot of little seeds and nuts scattered in the bar, which some of I believe is Quinoa. The Coconut flavor is on the mild side. The bar has baby chocolate chips or something of the sort scattered in the bar, which add a nice touch. The bar is on the sweet side, but not overpoweringly so. I actually really enjoyed this one!

Overall, I like the bars. They have similar tastes, so I would give them a 3.5 star rating each. I think they are a good idea for a pick me up at work, or a good way to get some caffeine in, especially if you suffer from heartburn. Coffee is a KILLER sometimes to me, but I drink it anyway (and suffer…LOL) because I want the caffeine. I would comment that the sugar and carbohydrate content are a bit high for a small bar (about 10 grams of sugar –mostly from dates– and 32 grams of carbs), so I also think it would be a great pre-workout snack. Natural sugars, carbohydrates, and caffeine!

I received these bars for free. This is an unbiased review.

Cappuccino LARABar

Author: Healthnuttxo

Something new! Don’t you all love new products!? (:

I got a very nice card and some free Cappuccino LARABars from the company a week or so ago (happy holidays to me!) I opened up the box and saw four bars of a flavor I never heard of or saw before- Cappuccino. This might be interesting, I thought. I used to hate coffee/ anything coffee related, but now I am a coffee convert. Thanks all nighters and piles upon piles of work that need to be done and the caffeine boost needed to do it. *sigh*

No, but really. Thanks to the endless work, I now love coffee. And coffee Keurigs are world’s greatest invention. Thank you to the inventor- you are are genius.

ANYWAY, the bars are gluten free, vegan, dairy and soy free, and made with minimal ingredients which I love. I opened up the bar and instantly smelled the coffee aroma. Observing the bar, it looked like a standard LARABar, but I also noticed rather large pieces of almonds.

I took a bite. The familiar date/fruity taste a LARABar often has was there, but not super prominent. I could taste the coffee flavor, but it wasn’t super strong. It had a bit of an awkward bite at the end, like a spice of some sort. I checked the ingredients and didn’t see any spices, so I’m going to say the coffee added that bit of a bite at the end.

The bar was soft, dense and chewy but had the slightly crunchier parts from the almond pieces. It was really satisfying as a snack and curbed my hunger well (almond always take away my hunger pains!). The bar was sweet but not too sweet, and overall pretty good.

As a whole, I’d give this one a 3.5 star rating. I don’t think it’s my favorite, but it was pretty good. My favorites will always be this one and the cookie dough bar!

Which LARABar is your favorite?! (:

Starbucks Caramel Macchiato Biscotti

Author: Healthnuttxo

Who’s obsessed with Starbucks!?!

meeeeeeeee.

I’m definitely guilty of going to Starbucks every week (err, day) to get my caffeine fix. What’s a girl to do when she has to do 8 million things in one day and needs caffeine to keep her going? It HAS to taste good and Starbucks does coffee right. Perfect in fact. So yummy.

Anyway, I got a caramel frappuccino and saw the Starbucks Caramel Macchiato Biscotti waiting at the counter. Oh, Starbucks, you are so sly. Not only am I spending over 5 dollars for a drink, now I am spending additional money on a biscotti that I probably don’t need. But, I saw it, it looked interesting, and well, I bought it. I. Am. An. Impulse. Buyer.

Moving on,

Here’s what it looked like.

There were three “layers” of the biscotti. A white layer on top with some sort of drizzled frosting, a middle thin brown layer, and a bottom layer that was frosted. The top layer tasted like a plain biscotti, nothing special. Crunchy, with a tad bit of vanilla flavor in it. The middle layer was also relatively bland, but had more of a coffee flavor to it. The bottom layer, my favorite, was sweet and had a coffee/caramel flavor to it, as well as being slightly softer than the rest of the layers as it had the frosting on it.

I wouldn’t say this biscotti was amazing, but it was ok. It was crunchy as a biscotti should be. I probably would have liked it better had the whole thing been frosted rather than just the bottom, just because I think without the frosting the biscotti would have been rather boring and bland. A good dunking-in-your coffee kind of cookie, but I also bought this with a frozen drink so that was a tad difficult (FAIL!!)

Overall, I would skip this biscotti. It probably wasn’t worth the additional 170 calories, as it was kind of small and lacked amazing flavor. If you want an amazing treat for around the same number of calories, I HIGHLY suggest this product I reviewed in the past. SO. GOOD!

I also don’t think this was worth the 15 grams of sugar and 3.5 grams of saturated fat. Really?? Where did THAT come from!?! So overall, 2 stars

1 Biscotti is 170 calories, 6 grams of fat, 27 grams of carbohydrates, 0 grams of fiber, 15 grams of sugar, 3 grams of protein.

Lotus Biscoff Cookies

Author: Healthnuttxo

Ever heard of Biscoff cookies?

If you haven’t, I highly recommend you try them.

Seriously.

A friend of mine said she thinks she had these before on a plane ride. Which makes sense, seeing this is on the label! (:

I bought a bunch of these online the other day, and I’m so happy I did. Not only are they crazy good, there something special and unique about them. As in, so unique I can’t stop eating them.

Seriously.

It’s a crunchy cookie, with delicious cinnamon flavor, and almost just the teeny, tiniest hint of ginger in the back ground. Except, I checked the ingredients, and it does not state ginger. I could swear I taste it, but seeing as I’m sure the label is more accurate than my palate, I guess I’ll have to accept the fact there is no ginger in it. HOWEVER, there is just a hint of spice that tastes like Ginger.

These actually remind me of cinnamon graham crackers. But better. On the cover it states it’s “Europe’s Favorite Cookie with Coffee”. I’m not located in Europe, nor do I drink a lot of coffee, but that’s not going to stop me from eating these. Or buying them (again).

What I really liked- the serving size. FOUR cookies! I love when serving sizes are more than 2, so this one scored extra points with me.

They are a tad high in saturated fat ( 3 grams per serving) and 12 grams of sugar per serving. And the ingredients are pretty good.

But I take into fact that these are cookies, meant to be treats. Even though I’m pretty sure I will be eating them every day until they are gone. (I can feel a deficit in my bank account as I type this…)

Overall? 4 1/2 stars. Delicious, and certainly worth a try!

So, since these are “Airline Cookies”, if you could eat these and travel ANYWHERE in the world, where would you go? I think Cancun has my vote 🙂

Hey- I have an idea. Let’s post another review about CHOCOLATE! I can’t get enough! Maybe that’s why I can’t sleep lately… is it the caffeine? (Just Kidding!)

Anyway- Nugo is a brand that makes a bunch of products that are suitable for many different lifestyles. According to the pamphlet I was sent along with some yummy bars from the company, they have..
“Nugo Family – Low Glycemic
NuGO Organic- USDA Certified Organic
NuGo Dark- Real Delicious Dark Chocolate
Gluten Free- Soy, Wheat and Dairy Free
KeriBar- Fruit and Fiber
Smarte Carb- Sugar Free”

Wow- so many options! Of the products I was sent, I recieved the Nugo Nutrition Bar in Peanut Butter Chocolate and Nugo Dark Mocha Chocolate Bar. What I like about both of these bars is that they incorporate chocolate in a healthier way- these bars are both good sources of protein, all natural, and relatively low in fat and calories. I’m ready to try ’em!

Nugo Nutrition Bar Peanut Butter Chocolate- this one had a chewy texture, kind of like a cross between a Rice Krispie Treat and a Luna Bar. It was actually pretty sweet, too. However, there was not much of a peanut butter flavor (aw, man!), and come to think of it, the chocolate flavor isn’t too strong either. However, the “lightness” or both flavors compliments each other- one flavor doesn’t really outshine the other. There is also a smooth and sweet layer of milk chocolate on the bottom. The taste overall kind of reminded me of peanut butter M&M’s- a salty sweet mix of peanut butter and chocolate. 3 1/2 stars

NuGo Dark Mocha Chocolate Bar- From the first bite- you can DEFINITELY taste the mocha flavor in this bar! I agree with the website’s description, which states, “Coffee Lovers, meet your new favorite gourmet snack”. If you like coffee, and you like chocolate, you WILL like this bar! You can even smell the mocha aroma after opening the package. Seeing as I’m not too much of a coffee drinker, I was actually surprised I liked this bar as much as I did. It’s COVERED in smooth dark chocolate, that wasn’t too bitter, which I liked. It’s chewy, but still has some texture and a bite to it. Again, it reminded me of a chocolate covered Rice Krispie Treat. It was sweet, and actually pretty good. This one gets 4 stars, and although it has 10 grams of protein, I think I’ll treat it as more of a “healthy candy bar” than a protein bar. (It’s also vegan and dairy free!)

Overall, I approve. These bars are all natural and offer a little something for everyone. What I don’t like is that some of the bars have corn syrup (boo!), and are a bit high in sugar. But, I’d still like to try the NuGo Chocolate Chocolate Chip flavor- that one sounds right up my alley- and some of the KeriBars (the fruit and fiber bars) if I ever see them in stores by me.

*Have you ever tried any NuGo bars? If so, which ones?
