Food Should Taste Good Tortilla Chips

Author: healthnuttxo

Food Should Taste Good- unless why  bother eating it?
That’s what comes to mind when I thought of these flavored tortilla chips. Flavored? you ask. Yep! They come in a bazillion (okay, not that many, more like eleven) varieties, ranging from chocolate to lime. Yum! They are also all natural, gluten free, a good source of fiber, and made without any GMO’s.

I was sent these delicious tortilla chips in the mail from the company, and after eating them,  I will not be going back to regular chips anytime soon! Of the ones I was sent, I tried the Cinnamon, Sweet Potato, and Chocolate  Flavors provided so generously by Food Should Taste Good.

anyway-
Cinnamon- These weren’t quite what I expected. I was expecting a sweet cinnamon sugar chip-instead what I got was a very strong corn flavor with a hint of ground cinnamon. Now sweet cinnamon as I had expected. It is slightly sweet, but no where near a dessert sugary sweet.

Sweet Potato- this flavor tricks you! At first I was like “oh, normal flavor, where’s the sweet potato?”. But after-! You get the sweet aftertaste of a sweet potato! It has a very smooth flavor and just the right amount of salt. I like to think it’s one of the healthier ones because I’m technically eating 2 veggies at once- corn & sweet potatoes :P

Chocolate- This one was my favorite, and not what I expected. I thought it was honestly going to taste funky, but it was actually really good! The flavor is caught between a chocolate graham cracker and a tortilla chip. It’s salty at first, then you taste the corn tortilla, and then a dark chocolate flavor shines through. It was very good, and left that “I just ate CHOCOLATE” flavor in my mouth.

Overall, I give these 4 stars. They are a healthier alternative to potato chips, have some rather interesting flavors & pack some fiber as well. They can also be combined with various spreads and dips to create really-good concoctions. Let me know if you have any of your own!!

The ingredients are also pretty much the same for all, with spices and extra flavors added depending on the variety. Check the website here if you are interested.

Ian's Organic Vanilla Wafer Cookie Buttons

Author: healthnuttxo

Ian’s Natural Foods is a company that makes organic and all natural foods and snacks geared toward people of all ages and sorts. They have gluten and allergy free foods, and all of them have “no artificial flavors, colors, or preservative…ever”. Sounds like a winner to me!

The cookie buttons come in 4 varieties- Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Chip Gluten/Wheat Free, Cinnamon Gluten/Wheat Free, and Vanilla Wafer. I was sent the Vanilla Wafer variety to try, and was excited. I never saw this flavor in stores by me, I only ever see the Chocolate Chip.

These cookies come in 100 calorie packs (good for portion control!) with a pretty decent amount of cookies in each bag (about 15-20). Each of them are about the size of a half dollar, and the thickness of 3 half-dollars stacked on each other. When you open the bag, there is a nice aroma of vanilla. They aren’t too sweet, but just right. At first bite, you can definietly taste a strong vanilla bean flavor. After a couple more, I think they had a combined flavor of shortbread cookies and sugar cookies, Yum!

Overall, I’m giving these 4 stars. They are low in fat and calories, and are very tasty. They were good with milk, smeared with peanut butter (and jelly!!), by itself, and crumbled in chocolate pudding. So Good!!!! They would totally get 5 stars if they had fiber and were made with whole wheat flour. They have 0 grams of fiber per serving, which is upsetting. I prefer my snacks to have at least a little bit of fiber for some satiety.

1 serving (1 pouch) is 100 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, 16 carbohydrates, 0 grams of fiber and 1 gram of protein.

Organic wheat flour, organic evaporated cane juice, water, organic palm oil, organic tapioca syrup, salt, baking soda, organic eggs, natural flavors, organic vanilla, organic soy lecithin, monocalcium phosphate.
*these are NOT gluten or wheat free!

Time for Thanksgiving review number 2! I figured applesauce and apple butter would fit the bill nicely. We always use applesauce as a compliment to the other dishes, but I like it in place of gravy with my turkey and I like using it as a condiment the next day for cold turkey and apple sandwiches. Yum! So i was excited to try products by Vermont Village Cannery. They make applesauce in the individual cups and jars in flavors Original Unsweetened, Raspberry, Mixed Berry, Peach, Strawberry-Banana, Maple Syrup, Tropical Mango, Cranberry and Cinnamon and they also make a Spiced Apple Butter.  Basically, me being the fan of applesauce that i am, i’m in applesauce heaven. All of the products are naturally grown and made in Vermont, and the apples are purchased locally and are pesticide free. They also don’t have any added sugars or preservatives, and most of the products are organic if not all  natural.
I got to try the Peach, Cinnamon, Strawberry Banana and Maple Syrup varieties of the applesauce, and the spiced apple butter. What did i think?

Each of the applesauces had a velvety smooth texture, which I absolutely loved. No chunks, pieces or even tiny blumps in these applesauces. It had a smooth feeling going down, and you can tell a lot of TLC was put into cooking and making the applesauces. I enjoyed every single flavor I tried.

Peach- this one had a strong and subtly sweet peach flavor, complimented nicely by the apple. I froze this one for about 30 minutes, and had a little peach slushie. Yum! 4 stars

Cinnamon- oooh. total dessert applesauce we got here. SO smooth, SO delicious. The cinnamon flavor is absolutely perfect, and it tastes as if it had been simmering with cinnamon sticks and cooked for a while to acheive such a good taste. 4 1/2 stars :)

Strawberry-Banana- this one had more of a tartness to it than the peach, probably due to the strawberry flavor. I didn’t taste much banana, but rather more of a strawberry-apple combination. It also had just the right amount of sweetness. 4 stars

Maple Syrup-  another favorite. I was so excited to try this one, because i adore maple flavored things. It was the smoothest out of all of them texture wise, and had just a hint of maple flavor. It also had a bit of a lemon aftertaste. I heated it up in the microwave and it tasted like the inside of an apple pie. Deeeeeeee-lish. I would liek to crush some graham cracker crumbs and heat this up and place it on top- sort of like a mock pie! 4 1/2 stars

Spiced Apple Butter- Vermont Village Cannery is awarded BEST APPLE BUTTER EVER. Seriously. This stuff BLEW ME AWAY. It had a buttery (heh, no pun intended) consistency and it was sweet despite no added sugar. It had a nice blend of a nutmeg/cinnamon/maple taste, and I would totally eat it out of the jar (in fact, i did ;) ) . It was perfect on waffles and heated up. I also used it in place of jelly for my usual PB&J and let’s just say I didn’t miss my sweet grape jelly at all. This stuff is SO good YOU MUST TRY IT. 5 stars!!!

Overall, obviosuly I loved these products. There great and perfect this time of the year, and anytime in my eyes :) I’m giving 4 stars to the applesauce, and 5 for the apple butter. I would like to try the tropical mango variety. It sounds delish! Clearly, Apples +Vermont Village Cannery = amazing. Keep up the good work!

Sonoma Crisps

sonoma1

sonomaI can’t even tell you how much i enjoyed these. Before i get into my new obsession, let’s review the company. Sonoma makes their products without added oil or sugar, and they have some secret process that bakes the fruit slowly, allowing them to be super crispy without additives or frying. The only things they add are fructose and calcium ascorbate to the products, which are all natural. They come in 5 different flavors, Apple Sticks Original, Gala Apple with Strawberry Blend, Apple Sticks Cinnamon, Golden Delicious, and Raisin Crunch. Sonoma sent me the Gala Apple with Strawberry Blend, Raisin Crunch, and Apple Sticks Cinnamon variety to try. Let me say, I AM IN LOVE.

Before you go, ew, freeze dried apple, take that thought out of your mind. I was in a snacking mood and i was originally thinking, okay those apple sticks are so not going to satisfy my snacking craving. I was SO wrong!

Each of the apple sticks look like tiny french fries, the shoe string kind, but they are crispy and crunchy. The Apple Stick Cinnamon flavor tasted like the Gala Apple variety, but had an extra hint of cinnamon flavor. Each of the apple varieties were sweet and just perfect. They aren’t flimsy like some freeze dried fruit can be, and they aren’t soft or like traditional dried fruit is. They are apple “cheese doodles”, if you will. :) The Gala Apple was a special strawberry blend, so it also included freeze-dried crunchy strawberries. I liked them, which i wasn’t expecting. normally i don’t like freeze dried strawberries because they are too tart, but these weren’t, and were actually sweet.
The Raisin Crunch was a bit different. They were plump raisins that had a hollow center and a nice crunch. They definietly had a nice “raisin-y” flavor, and i think they would be good in a trail mix or cereal rather than by themself.

So I’m happy and sad for these products. Happy because i’m officially obsessed and these are now my new go-to for dried/crunchy fruit. Sad because they are only available in California locations (aka THE OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY FOR ME), and amazon :( . And on amazon you can only buy bulk of one flavor, so i just ordered myself 20$ worth of Apple Sticks Cinnamon. Im going to be broke soon… :)
Sonoma Crisps= 5 Star

I hope they come out with new flavors. I think PEAR, PINEAPPLE, or PEACH would be AWESOME!

Apple Sticks Cinnamon- 1 serving (60 pieces) is 70 calories, 0 grams of fat, 18 carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, and 0 grams of protein.

Gala Apple with Strawberry Blend- 1 serving (60 pieces) is 80 calories, 0 grams of fat, 20 carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, and 1 gram of protein.

Raisin Crunch- 1 serving (38 pieces) is 60 calories,  0 grams of fat, 13 carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of fiber, and 1 gram of protein.

*I am going to implement a new rating technique- Stars! Obviously 5 stars=the best, 1 =the worst. I will try to update all my previous posts for this new method!*

Newman's Own Organics Hermits

Author: healthnuttxo

Aren’t Hermits those annoying crabs? Nope! Well, sort of, those are hermit crabs, but the Hermits I’m talking about aren’t “crabby” at all.
They come in 3 different flavors, Original, Cinnamon and Ginger. I tried the Cinnamon variety of the 3. They resemble fig newtons in a way, and are approximately the same size and shape. They have HUGE sugar crystals on the top, that almost look like granules of salt. When you  bite into them, oh wow, it is such a nice experience.  They are made with figs (not to be confused with Newman’s Own Organic Fig Newmans…to be reviewed on a later date!! :)   ), and had a deep, chewy consistency, which i hold the molasses, fig, and raisins responsible for. There was a nice “spice” to them, mainly from the cinnamon. They weren’t overpoweringly sweet, but just sweet enough. The perfect compliment would be a nice cold glass of milk or even tea if you wanted to have something with them. I really thought the sugar crystals on top added a nice touch, even a tiny bit of a crunch to the cookie. These were GOOD!

1 cookie is 80 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 17 carbohydrates, less than 1 gram of fiber, and 1 gram of protein.

These would be perfect if they were whole wheat and had more fiber. But for now, I’ll take ‘em as is!

Organic Unbleached Wheat Flour, Organic Raisins, Organic Molasses, Organic Sugar, Organic Palm Fruit Oil, Oats, Organic Figs, Raisin Paste, Cinnamon and other Spices, Leavening (Baking Soda, Monocalcium Phosphate), Salt, Rice Bran Extract.
