EnjoyLife boom CHOCO boom bars

Author: Healthnuttxo

Chocolate! Nothing is better than chocolate. Ok maybe peanut butter, but there’s room for debate on that one. ANYWAY, EnjoyLife sent me some boom CHOCO boom bars to try for free. I already reviewed the Rice Milk with Crispy Rice variety here, and thought it was pretty good. Today’s review is on the Dairy-Free Rice Milk Bar and the Dark Chocolate Bar.

Both these bars are free of nuts, soy, dairy, gluten, wheat, fish, shellfish,  and eggs as stated on the wrapper. They are also both vegan.

I tried the dark chocolate one first, although hesistantly. As you probably know, I’m not a huge dark chocolate fan. I love the health benefits, but not a fan of the bitterness (Why can’t milk or white chocolate be as healthy as dark chocolate!!!??) I DID like how cute the squares were. Here’s a picture

So, I took a bite of the square, which was rather thick and had a nice bite to it, and was pleasantly surprised. Not as bitter as I thought it would be! It was creamy, actually kind of sweet, and there was a vanilla aftertaste as well. Pretty good! 3 1/2 stars

Next up, the Dairy-Free Rice Milk bar. At first this one was smooth and sweet, but as I continued to eat it, I noticed it had some kind of an aftertaste. Hmm. Have you ever had sugar free chocolate? I have, and I always noticed it had some sort of an aftertaste which was similar to what this bar had. Also what I found odd was that I could almost taste milk in this bar, despite the fact that it was dairy-free. Bizarre. It was OK, but not my favorite. 3 stars

Well, look at that! I actually liked the Dark Chocolate one more than the Dairy-Free Rice Milk bar! Go figure ;)

Dark Chocolate boom CHOCO boom bar- 1 package is 200 calories, 15 grams of fat ( 9 saturated) 22 grams of carbohydrates, 3 grams of fiber, 17 grams of sugar and 2 grams of protein.

Dairy-Free Rice Milk boom CHOCO boom bar- 1 package is 230 calories, 17 grams of fat (11 saturated), 21 grams of carbohydrates, 1 grams of fiber, 17 grams of sugar, and 1 gram of protein.

If you could invent your own chocolate bar, what would it have in it? I would have a peanut butter filled milk chocolate bar with bits of banana in it. MMM!

Enjoy Life Soft Baked Lively Lemon Cookies

Author: Healthnuttxo

EnjoyLife offered to send me some of their cookies for free, and one of them was the Lively Lemon cookies. According to the box, these are wheat free, peanut free, dairy free, tree nut free, soy free, fish free, egg free and shellfish free, as well as being gluten free. I don’t have any food allergies, but I was still up for trying them anyway.

I opened the box, and saw kind of small-ish cookies with yellow spots on them. They smelled very fresh and lemon like. I took one out of the box and was a bit disappointed at how small they were. For a comparison, here’s what they looked like compared to a Snapple cap.

More like bite-sized cookies to me!

These cookies were super soft,  no crunch here. They were chewy, except for the little yellow bumps that were a bit harder. They were sweet with a lemon zest flavor, and pretty good. It was strange that they were really moist, yet dry at the same time- odd? Overall, they were pretty good. Not amazing, but pretty good. I had a friend try one an she said they were “very good in their own way” but they “had something missing”. I agreed.  3 1/2 stars.

What’s your favorite thing that is LEMON flavored?

2 cookies is 130 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 21 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, 11 grams of sugar and 1 gram of protein.

Introducing, one of the most allergy friendly bars I have probably ever eaten. Enjoy Life sent me some of their boom CHOCO boom bars to try for free, one being the dairy-free rice milk with crispy rice bar. This bar is soy free, dairy free, nut free, gluten free, and according to the back of the wrapper, “they contain NO: wheat, dairy, peanuts, tree nuts, egg, soy, fish or shellfish. Also made without casein, potato, sesame, and sulfites”. How’s THAT for a chocolate bar?

So of course, I was a bit iffy to try it. I mean, milk chocolate is usually what I eat and like, and this bar had NO dairy? Hmm..

So, I opened up the wrapper and saw 4 rather large squares of chocolate. I took the plunge and took a bite and…

mmmmmm. :)

Sweet, creamy, delicious. This has no dairy? I would have never known! A great chocolate flavor, a great milk chocolate flavor (minus the milk of course), and really good. There weren’t a ton of crispies in it, which I actually liked because I feel as if sometimes the add-ins take away from the actual chocolate. But the crispies themselves tasted like white rice crispies, and left a little bit of an aftertaste.

Overall, 4 stars. Delicious! I think that anyone might like this bar, and it’s great that it caters to people with special dietary needs. It is a bit high in saturated fat (10 grams per package), and sugar (16 grams per package), but then again, it is candy, and probably not meant to be eaten every day.

1 package  is 220 calories, 15 grams of fat, 22 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber, 16 grams of sugar, and 1 gram of protein.

What’s your favorite type of chocolate bar? Please leave me a comment below! :)

Evaporated Cane Juice, Non-Dairy Cocoa Butter, Natural Chocolate Liquor (non-alcoholic), Rice Chips (rice flour, rice bran, raisin juice concentrate, honey, salt), Rice Milk Powder (rice syrup powder, rice starch, rice flour, salt, carrageenan), Salt.

Who likes cheesy, salty, crunchy snacks? :)

Normally I’m a sweet rather than salty girl, but every now and then I crave something crunchy and salty to go with my lunch. So what did I opt for today?

Michael Season’s Baked Cheddar Cheese Curls! These curls are gluten and wheat free, and are baked rather than fried. I agree with the logo on the package for “feel good snacking”- these curls were both delicious and a good snacking option!

I opened up the bag and saw a bunch of cheese curls. Some were skinny and long, others wide and short. An assortment of pieces all covered in an orange powdery coating. After eating a few, I really like these! Crunchy, airy, cheesy and salty! It was a very sharp cheddar flavor, with a salty after taste. Certainly needed a drink with these!

Overall, they went perfectly with my lunch, and I really enjoyed them. I really liked that there was “no hydrogenated oils, no preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors” as it stated on the package. These are now my go-to cheese curls! I liked the short and wide ones, as they were the cheesiest :) 5 stars

1 cup (28 grams) is 130 calories, 4.5 grams of fat, 20 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, 1 gram of sugar, and 2 grams of protein.

Ah, that cute puffin I have grown to love on most of the Barbara’s Bakery products. It’s almost as if when I’m browsing the grocery store, I don’t have to look hard to find the Barbara’s Bakery products- just look for the cute puffin!

Well, today he’s feature on the Puffin Puffs Fruit Medley Cereal that I was sent to try from Barbara’s Bakery. According to the package, this cereal is “100% natural” and a “crunchy corn and oat cereal”, along with being “prebiotic”. Let’s hope it’s tasty, too! : )

I opened up the single serve bag, and saw a variety of shapes and colors- certainly not what I’m used to with the familiar puffin squares. There were yellow banana shaped pieces, orange orange shaped pieces, and purple pieces that sort of resembled either a flower or a bunch of grapes, I wasn’t really sure.

Anywho-

The taste sure was FRUITY! Almost a tropical feel really. Each piece sort of tasted the same, and all together, it reminded me of fruity-type cereals I have eaten in the past. The cereal was quite sweet overall, but not “sugary” tasting, which I liked. The texture was very airy, crispy and crunchy- even slightly sticky!

Overall, an enjoyable cereal. I’m sure kids will enjoy this cereal, and I thought it was quite good too. I’m giving it 3 1/2 stars overall. It was a bit airy for my liking, and I can’t really see it satisfying my appetite for long. I do like how there is 3 grams of fiber, and only 7 grams of sugar per 30-gram bag!

So, here’s a question you may want to answer…
What’s your favorite childhood cereal?
I think mine was Peanut Butter Cap’n Crunch! :)

Granola Gourmet Energy Bars

Author: Healthnuttxo

Energy Bars- I either love them, or, well, could do without them. Some are really tasty, but the ingredients aren’t so good, and some have great ingredients, but, the taste isn’t so good. I have found a few energy bars that I do enjoy throughout the years, and here’s hoping to add something new to my list…

Granola Gourmet makes all natural energy bars, but that also offer a bit more. What’s really cool is that according to the package, “A portion of your purchase helps fight diabetes!” I love when companies give back to other things like funds, or the environment. That’s great!! : )

I was sent the Brownie and Very Berry flavors to try from Granola Gourmet.

Brownie- according to the package, these contain no dairy, no wheat, and no refined sugar. I opened the package, and was pleased with the smell.  It sort of smelled like a chocolate fudge- yum! Each bar is a bit tiny, about the size of a business card in length, and about 1/2 inch in thickness. These have a light chocolate flavor, more of a fruity taste. I let my mom try a piece, and she even asked if there were raisins in it! It has a good amount of sweetness, and there are just tons of visible flaxseeds, oats, and sunflower seeds. It wasn’t dense, more of a “fudgy” tasting brownie. It kind of reminded me of a chocolate covered fig, or date. Like I said it is a bit small, and 150 calories for 1 serving. I could easily eat 2 ! 4 stars

Very Berry- According to the front of this package, these have no sodium no dairy and no wheat. This one was definetely chewy and provided a ‘nutty/grainy’ texture. It wasn’t as sweet as I had hoped, and was a bit bland. It sort of reminded me of the flavor of plain oatmeal, but chewy, with just a bit of strawberry flavor. 3 stars

Overall, these are good. I like that they provide some whole grains, are dairy and wheat free, and are all natural! I think the Brownie flavor is the better of the two, as it had a good amount of sweetness and helped me when I was craving something chocolatey. Ener-G Ginger Cookies

Author: Healthnuttxo

Doing a double post tonight, seeing as I won’t be able to post a review tomorow. Aw, man!! :( But, anyway. Enjoy !!

I’m sure you guys have heard of Ener G . They make an assortment of foods that cater to the needs of those with special dietary needs. This includes breads, pretzels, cookies, etc. According to the website, “We not only offer wheat free, gluten free products, but also products for low protein diets and dairy free products. Additionally, all of our products are free of peanuts, tree nuts, and are also Kof-K Certified. Our bakery is dedicated to wheat free, gluten free baking, guaranteeing that contamination from gluten will not occur.”

That’s great- I love companies that try to make products that everyone can enjoy! :)

Anyway- Ener-G sent me some of their products to try, and of the ones I was sent, one of my favorites was the Ginger Cookies. I’m a fan of gingerbread cookies around Christmastime, and a good ginger snap is always tasty to me. So, I was happy to try these. These cookies in particular are gluten free, wheat free, egg free and dairy free.

These cookies certainly smell delicious, with a fresh ginger scent. They are crunchy and sweet, and have a light ginger flavor, which was actually quite nice. It wasn’t overpowering at all, or too spicy. They were sweet enough to keep eating right out of the package!  A light, yet flavorful cookie. Goes perfect with a cold glass of milk, or even by itself.

The best part about these cookies… only 50 calories each! Yea! They are only 1.5 grams of fat each, so they are low fat, low calorie, and yet still quite tasty. I give them 4 1/2 stars, because although they are delicious, they lack fiber, and the first ingredient is organic evaporated cane juice. However, gluten free products tend to be lower in fiber than non-gluten free, and they are cookies, so I think they are a delicious treat. Especially if you like ginger! :)

1 cookie is 50 calories, 1.5 grams of fat, 9 carbohydrates, 4 grams of sugar, 0 grams of fiber, and 0 grams of protein.

Organic Evaporated Cane Juice, White Rice Flour,Potato Starch, Filtered Water, Organic Palm Fruit Oil, Unsulphured Molasses, Egg Replacer [ (tapioca flour, potato starch, leavening (calcium lactate, calcium carbonate, glucono delta lactone), sodium carboxymethylcellulose, methylcellulose], Ginger Powder, Sodium Bicarbonate, Monocalcium Phosphate, Vanilla Powder [(vanilla bean extractives, dextrose (corn sugar)], Sodium Carbohymethylcellulose.

Life Field Buckwheat Groats

Author: Healthnuttxo

LifeField sent me a bag of their Buckwheat Groats, which are all natural, have no preservatives or additives, and are both gluten and wheat free. LifeField also makes buckwheat cookies and buckwheat waffle/pancake mix.

As is, they look like tiny little brown chips, and are hard to the touch. They sort of resemble mini chocolate chips, but are a light brown in color instead.

So, how to approach the groats? Well, I followed the instructions on the back of the bag, which called for 2 cups of water, 1 cup of the groats, and then a bit of salt, except I reduced everything by half to make only 2 servings instead of 4.  Then I boiled some water and added the salt, stirred the groats into the water, and let it simmer. It suggests 15 minutes, but I let it sit for about 30.

Well, they certainly PLUMPED up! I didn’t expect them to expand as much as they did. They were much softer, and chewy in texture. The smell sort of reminded me of the forest for some reason. It just smelled and tasted kind of “nutty” to me. Of course, there are no nuts in the actual product, but that’s the only way I could really think to describe it plain. Other than that, it’s actual quite bland. It says you can use it as a morning cereal, and add milk. I tried adding some butter and sugar to see if I could up the taste, but sadly, it did not absorb much of the flavors.

Overall, it wasn’t bad, but I think I’ll be sticking to oatmeal and grains like that as of now. I did like that one serving provided 5 grams of protein and was low in fat, but it lacked fiber and, well, wasn’t too tasty by itself. Perhaps with some milk, a bit of sweetener and some fruit, this would be a good swap for cereal, especially those who cannot tolerate gluten or wheat. 2 1/2 stars

*Has anyone ever tried Groats? What did you think? Do you have any yummy recipes?*

1/4 cup (41g) is 140 calories, 1 gram of fat, 28 carbohydrates, .5 grams of fiber, 0 grams of sugar and 5 grams of protein.

100% Pure Buckwheat Groats.

Pamela’s Products Cookies

Author: Healthnuttxo

Pamela’s Products is a company that manufactures a whole bunch of gluten and wheat free foods, that are also all natural, and some even organic. They make products such as cakes, cookies, baking mixes- a little something for everyone!

Pamela’s Products generously sent me 3 boxes of their cookies to try- in Peanut Butter, Old Fashioned Raisin Walnut, and Spicy Ginger Cookies with Crystallized Ginger. To be honest, I was excited to try all three! Peanut Butter, because, well you should know why (my obsession with peanut butter, of course!), Old Fashioned Raisin Walnut, because I haven’t had a good oatmeal cookie in a while, and Spicy Ginger, because I love a good ginger cookie to bring me nostalgia of home-made gingerbread cookies. Yum-my!

I tried the Peanut Butter cookies first. Small in size, they had a light orangey-brown color with little bits of peanuts in them. Not too sweet, but a rich peanut taste. It was sort of “snickerdoodle” tasting- as I detected a “molasses” flavor. It’s a rather soft cookie, and although I liked it soft, I think it would have been better if it was a bit crispy, or had a bit of a crunch to it.

Next up, the Old Fashioned Raisin Walnut. The first thing I noticed was how soft and moist these were! Before I opened the package I even noticed the plastic overwrap was a little bit moist from the cookies! I love a good, moist oatmeal raisin cookie! (ooh- imagine it heated up in the microwave? Yum!!) This cookie was also small, about the same size of the peanut butter ones. I took a bite, and immediately tasted the walnuts. Little bits of walnuts throughout the cookie, as well as bigger pieces on top of the cookie. The raisins were the sweetest part of the cookie, and added a nice flavor. It was a very good combination of raisin/walnut flavor. The cookie had a good amount of sweetness, but is actually pretty low in sugar (only 4 grams per cookie). Not bad!!

Lastly, the Spicy Ginger Cookies with Crystallized Ginger. I picked the cookie that actually had a decently sized piece of ginger on top- it looked like a white flake on top of the cookie.Whew! These definitely had some ginger-spice taste! I really enjoyed them! They did, in fact, remind me of homemade gingerbread cookies at Christmas time! Soft and chewy, they also left quite a kick or some “heat” once you finished chewing. Delicious!

Overall, these are pretty tasty! Perfect for those of you who cannot tolerate gluten or wheat, or for anyone really who wants a yummy cookie. I like that the cookies cater to different needs as well- some are dairy free, some sweetened with fruit juice, and a lot are made with organic ingredients. What I didn’t like was that these cookies are relatively low in fiber, high in fat, and are a little high in the calorie department for a small-ish cookie. However- cookies are intended to be treats- so I say let yourself have one (or two!!) if you please :) These cookies get 4 stars. I would like to try their other products- like the Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, Chocolate Chip Mini Cookies, and their Corn Bread and Muffin Mix! Yum!

Yum. Junk Food. I mean really, who doesn’t love chips, cheese puffs & salty pretzels? :D

LUCKILY- Michael Season’s makes versions of your typical unhealthy fare that are much more diet (and heart!) friendly. All of their snacks are healthier, and don’t contain all those nasty ingredients some companies put into their snacks.

The company sent me a few of their snacks to try, and one of my favorites was the Baked Cheddar Cheese Puffs. Not only are these all natural, they are wheat and gluten free, have no hydrogenated oils, no preservatives, no artificial colors and no artificial flavors. AND- I was sent a bag of them in a pre-portioned 100 calorie pack- gotta love portion control!

Each one of them is about the size of your pinky finger, and a dusted with a coating of cheesey powder. What I liked was that it didn’t leave my fingers all greasy or ORANGE like some other cheese puffs can. The taste was amazing! STRONG cheesy flavor, similar to cheetos, and you can definietly taste the buttermilk undertones of flavor. Salty and cheddary, they provide a burst of flavor and some guilt free snacking. Plus, you get a lot in the bag for 100 calories! Normally 100 calorie packs scrimp on portions, but you get a good amount in each bag. Kudos, Michael Season’s, you get 4 1/2 stars!

1 bag is 100 calories, 3.5 grams of fat, 15 carbohydrates, 1 gram of fiber and 2 grams of protein.

HEY! Ya know what goes good with cheese puffs? ALMOND MILK! well,  not really.. but enter my giveaway, anyway!!
