I got two free items from Art Bird to do a review of! I never heard of the company, but after looking at the website and some of their products, I was certainly interested.

I chose the Lunch & Liberty Shoulder bag in “Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!” and the Nuts & Bolts bag in the “Lucky in Love” option. As displayed, the Lunch & Liberty Shoulder bag is larger, and according to the website, it has a food safe lining, adjustable shoulder strap, can be easily sponge cleaned. It has a mesh pocket on the inside, where I put a waterbottle, and plenty of room. Here’s a sneak peak.

The bag costs $29.99, but again, I was sent it for free.

I used this bag when I did my Spartan race! I kept a few water bottles in it, a yogurt, some snacks, and a frozen water bottle in it in a hot car while I participated in the race. So, the sun was beaming on the car for roughly 4-5 hours, and my stuff stayed cold! I was impressed. I also really liked the bag. The Beatles are one of my favorites, and I could not resist that design. The bag was very soft, had a sturdy plastic zipper, but it did not open/close easily without trying. However, the strap was easy to adjust. 4 stars

The Nuts & Bolts (Lucky in Love) (value of $9.95) bag was more oriented toward snacks, a sandwich, or the tag even suggested to use it to carry things such as makeup. The website stated it was insulated as well, so I put a sandwich in it that I had refrigerated overnight. It is held closed by a large piece of velcro. Sadly, it did not keep my sandwich cold, but it did prevent it from being smushed in my bag so that was a plus. As a plus, as the website states, it is Earth friendly because you can use this instead of plastic bags. Woo! The bag was also awfully pretty, I think I will use it for makeup. I will have to give it 3 stars based on sandwich use/ keeping things cold, but for snacks and other things, I would give it a higher rating of a 4.

Overall, worth a try! They have some really pretty designs. Check them out!

Popcorn is by far my favorite snack (this post is still not biased!!). I was sent 3 flavors of a brand of popcorn I have never heard of, or even seen in stores, for free. Live Love POP sent me Lime Fresco, Sea Salt, and Truffle Salt popcorn, all made with minimal ingredients, and waist line friendly (30 calories per cup!).

The popcorn comes in brown bags that were both easy to open and close to stay fresh. I like that it had a nice sturdy bag, but also a natural feel, and had a zipper built in the bag. My number one pet peeve with snacks is that the cheap plastic breaks and then you have a bag ripped down the middle, thus, either snacks all over the floor from improper opening or stale snacks. BOOO!

I decided to try the Truffle Salt flavor first. And boy was I not disappointed! It was SO good! I never had truffles, or truffle salt, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. However, this popcorn had a lot of flavor and almost reminded me of a garlic knot. Garlic knot flavored popcorn for 30 cals a cup? COUNT ME IN! I did not miss the butter or anything on this popcorn, flavor was covered! It also had a good amount of salt, but not too much. My only complaint was that bag was too small! heh! 4 1/2 stars

Next up, the Sea Salt. This one was honestly pretty bland. I know it had no other flavor really except salt, but it was even lacking in the salt department. It was crunchy and fluffy popcorn, which kept me eating the rest of the bag, but I wouldn’t buy this one in the future if I had the chance. Not enough salt to have a sea salt flavor. 3 stars

Lastly, Lime Fresco.

This one I had high hopes for, especially after the Truffle Salt flavor. It sounded semi exotic, and a new flavor I never tried when it came to popcorn! The popcorn was a bit odd. It had a lime flavor, some bites more potent than others, that was a bit sour, mixed with some salt flavor. The flavor reminded me of a lime rub you would put on chicken to grill with. It got better as I ate more of it, and although it wasn’t my favorite, it wasn’t bad. I feel like a touch of butter would have been perfect, but again, 30 cals a cup a can’t really complain! 3  stars

Overall, I like the popcorn! I would LOVE to have more of that truffle flavored popcorn and love to see if Live Love POP has any more flavors to try. I think they would make a really good sweet flavored popcorn, because I like the direction they are going in! These popcorns are vegan, all natural, and GMO free 🙂

Hey peeps!

I got two new flavors of Oikos Frozen Yogurt sent to me to try for free for a review. I was certainly excited! I was a frozen yogurt JUNKIE in my freshman year of college. I also didn’t count macros- I only counted calories back then. So I thought it was perfectly acceptable to eat a bowl of frozen yogurt loaded with toppings as long as I stayed in my calorie range (LOL!!). I was also a cardio bunny at the time and barely lifted a weight…oh, what a sad, sad time for me. Haha. If you like cardio, I am not knocking it, I just LOVE weight lifting!!

ANYWAY!

Off topic…because that’s how I normally do ;D… onto the fro yo! I put both flavors in a bowl

I tried the Chocolate first. It was creamy, soft and tasted just like ice cream! It was certainly sweet, and had a predominant dark chocolate flavor. It was smooth, refreshing, and very, very good! It tasted almost like those fudge Popsicles on a cardboard stick I used to eat when I was little. However, it was super creamy and not icy at all! I wouldn’t have known it was frozen yogurt if the carton didn’t say so 🙂 4.5 stars

Onto the Key Lime flavor… this one was also refreshing and sweet. It tasted honestly JUST like a key lime flavored yogurt. So if you like that flavor, you would like this ice cream. It was tangy and had a little zing at the end, that I thought might be ginger but it was not listed on the ingredient list. It was good, but I wouldn’t buy it in the future. Not my cup of tea. 3 stars

Overall, I like these! The chocolate is the way to go in my opinion. But I would love to sample more flavors! I generally stay away from sweets because of my Diabetes, especially low fat/ high sugar ones like this because of the glycemic spike, but a few tastes every now and then is awfully nice after a hard day at the gym or a sweaty, sunny day. Enjoy your day guys!

I got some samples to try for free from Thin Slim Foods! This company makes desserts, breads, bagels and more that are lower in calories and carbs than traditional fare. I was lucky enough to get a loaf of the Honey and Plain bread, as well as 2 of the brownies to try.

I was definitely intrigued by these foods. Being a Diabetic, I try to keep my carbohydrates on the lower side, as it allows for better blood sugar control (carbs= the devil for me sometimes!). Don’t get me wrong, I DO miss my breads, bagels, etc. so it is nice to hear of companies that make products that are lower in carbs and calories!

First things first…the brownie! I haven’t had a full brownie in ages. I bake a lot, but seldom eat what I bake- and moreso taste it so make sure it is good, and give it away for others to enjoy.

The brownie is 45 calories, 20 carbohydrates (8 of which is fiber), 0 grams of sugar, 10 sugar alcohols, and 6 grams of protein. It’s a nice thick sized brownie…and the whole thing 45 calories? I was skeptical.

I bit into it. It was definitely a cakey brownie, with a strong cocoa powder flavor. It was on the dry side, and a little pasty. It had a sweetness to it- but you could tell it wasn’t from sugar, but rather from a non caloric sweetener. Being a diabetic, I can spot that flavor miles away! I like it, and sort of am forced to like it since I can’t eat sugar, but it’s definitely not for everyone. The brownie is lackluster, but it is chocolately. I think it needs a smear of peanut butter or some sugar free chocolate chips thrown in there to be more appetizing. 2  stars.

Next up, the Honey Bread.

As you can see…this bread is tiny! Each piece is a little smaller than the size of my hand. I decided to make an egg white and cheese sandwich with it. So I toasted the bread from frozen, put some brummel and brown butter on it, and made a sammy!
The bread is a bit bland, but versatile since you can pretty much use it for any type of sandwich or spread. It had a nice crunch and was still fluffy after toasting. It tasted almost like a rye bread, but less dense. It had a very very TEENY flavor of honey…nothing noticeable for sure. I had a very small blood sugar spike, about 10 mg/dL, but I also have to factor in the fact I had eggs and cheese which will contribute to something.
Considering this is a low carb bread…and I’ve had nasty ones before…this one is really good. Small, but good. I would buy it again. 3 1/2 stars

1 slice is 50 calories, 2 grams of fat, 8 grams of carbs (7 of which are fiber), 0 grams of sugar, and 7 grams of protein.

Lastly, the Plain Bread.

To be fair, I made the same sandwich.

This bread is pretty much identical to the Honey one, but very very slightly less sweet. It had more of a Rye Bread flavor, but generally was still a bland bread. It was still good for the sandwich, but lacked flavor. I enjoyed the Honey one more because even though the Honey flavor was minimal, it was still noticeable. 3 stars

Overall, I think this company has some good stuff. I would love to try more in the near future, and am happy to report little to no blood sugar spikes. I also like the added protein in these products. Helps me hit my daily quotas!

Orgain Organic Nutritional Shakes

Author: Healthnuttxo

Hey guys! So the peeps over at Orgain sent me a bunch of their Organic Nutritional Shakes to try! I was excited to try these because they are made with wholesome and organic ingredients, and because I feel like everyone can use a little extra protein! =]

First, the protein nutritional shakes. I got them in 3 flavors, Iced Cafe Mocha, Sweet Vanilla Bean, and Creamy Chocolate Fudge.

Iced Cafe Mocha– This one was not super sweet, and really reminded me of just an iced coffee for the flavor that was heavy with milk. It definitely had a nice mocha flavor, and was really quite enjoyable, especially for coffee fans!! 3.5/5 stars

Sweet Vanilla Bean – this one reminded me almost of a vanilla soy milk for the flavor. A teeny bit of an aftertaste, but was still pretty good. It was sweeter than the Iced Cafe Mocha flavor, but not sugary sweet. It had a very fresh taste which I liked. Enjoyable! 3.5/5 stars

Creamy Chocolate Fudge- this one I wasn’t really a fan of. It wasn’t that sweet and had a bit of an off flavor when it came to the chocolate. It definitely was more fudgy than chocolatey flavor, and left a tad of an aftertaste. Not bad, but not my favorite. 3/5 stars

Here’s the nutritional label for these shakes.

Now onto the “Healthy Kids” line!

These are organic, enriched with vitamins and minerals, have 8 grams or protein, and are free from artificial colors/flavors, preservatives, and corn syrup.

“Healthy Kids” Strawberry- this one has a very mild strawberry flavor. I liked it! I find that strawberry flavored products are often overly sweet and sugary tasting. This one provided a fresh strawberry flavor without feeling like I just drank a mouthful of sugar. It had a teeny bit of a chalky flavor to it, but not too overpowering. 3.5/5 stars

“Healthy Kids” Vanilla -this one also tasted a little chalky, reminiscent of a vanilla protein shake, but was still pretty good. Not too sweet, and had a pretty strong vanilla flavor. There was a bit of an aftertaste I wasn’t too fond of, but it was still pretty good. 3/5 stars

“Healthy Kids” Chocolate- this one was the sweetest of the 3. It reminded of a Yoo-hoo in flavor, for it’s rich chocolatey taste. I think I liked this one the best, as it didn’t taste chalky or have an aftertaste, and was quite yummy! 4/5 stars

Here’s the nutritional label for these:

Overall: I think these are worth a try. I happened to like the kids line better than the other 3, but they are lower in protein than the others. I think there are pros and cons to each of the drinks. For example,  if you love coffee in the morning and aren’t much of a breakfast person, the Iced Mocha Cafe drink would be perfect for you! A nice protein filled way to start the day, and still get the yumminess of coffee.

Let me know if anyone has/will try these! 🙂

Banana Chobani Greek Yogurt

Author: Healthnuttxo

Source

Never fear- I am alive!!!!! SORRY for the mad delay. I promise for more regular posts- have had a very hectic past few weeks but I am officially back 🙂

Today’s review…CHOBANI! You all know how much I freaking love Chobani. One a day, minimum, with top flavors (in my opinion at least) being Pineapple, Strawberry Banana, Peach and Black Cherry. Could eat em all day every day. Waiting for a Chobani Peanut Butter flavor (….what?!)

Today’s review, the Banana Chobani. I WAITED AND WAITED AND WAITED for this day to come. I was stoked. The second I saw it on the shelf I bought it, fully knowing I had a drawer full (yes, I store my Chobani in the fridgerator drawer where produce is supposed to go 😛 ) and didn’t need to buy any more. Who cares!? Bought it.

Opened the Chobani up with pure excitement. Gave it a taste and….

Meh. It was ok. It had the notorious creamy and thick texture CHobani is known for. It had a tang to it- as in it wasn’t super sweet and kind of felt dulled down. Almost like banana puree was put on the bottom of a lightly flavored yogurt. Kinda like…. baby food. (Wait…I know what baby food tastes like?)

I just wish it was sweeter. Double edged sword I know, since that would require adding sweetener. But maybe use riper bananas? A different type of bananas? or some stevia? I may try it again, and add a Stevia packet, but I hate having to add sweetness to things that are already sweetened. Mind you I do not eat a lot of sugar (I’m a Diabetic) so don’t think I have an accustomed taste for sweet things.

Overall, 3 stars. Not on my top list for CHO, but would buy again. Why not? Gotta have my Chobani 🙂

HEY! I am back 🙂 I promise posts will be less sporadic!! Have you missed me? 😉

Back in action with a review about not a food, but a product! Own Nighttime Lip Therapy and Day Lip Treatment. I got a free sample of each from the company and was excited to give them a try! Just in time for winter, where lips are vulnerable to harsh winds, cold temperatures and other crappy factors that lead to not-so-nice looking lips. Unless you live in some hot climate year round I suppose…then I’m just insanely jealous 😉

I have been using the treatments for about 2 weeks or so. What I like about them is that they have a ball on the tip, so you don’t need to squeeze anything out of a tube or use your finger to apply (which I am not a fan of due to bacteria!). It felt smooth going on, and not a lot came out at once so you do need to roll it a few times over your lips to get a good application on.

I did notice subtle changes, but I don’t think it was 100% amazing. I would be sitting doing work, and noticed myself applying the day treatment a few times because it dried out rather quickly. I don’t know if that’s to say my lips were “absorbing” the treatment or if it was just wearing off. I do like the feel of it on my lips after I put it on, however, as it’s smooth and leaves my lips feeling supple. I don’t like how it doesn’t last that long, as other products I have used in the past.

Overall, it’s cool, unique, I like the small tube and the rolly-ball, but it’s not as effective as I would have liked it to be. Still worth a try- 3 stars.

Another round of Quest Bar reviews! I love these things! I am very grateful the people over at Quest Bar sent me a generous sample box for free so I can try all of their flavors. Today’s review will be of the Chocolate Peanut Butter, Strawberry Cheesecake and Peanut Butter Supreme Quest Bars. As always, these bars are gluten free, high in fiber and low in sugar! Woo!

Let’s do the Chocolate Peanut Butter first. (Because why not??! :p)

This bar was soft and chewy, and significantly more chewy than the other bars I have tried. It had a bit of an odd flavor, and I felt it tasted a bit artificial. I can see how it would be labeled a “chocolate peanut butter” flavored bar, as I detected elements of both. It was certainly a sweet chocolate peanut butter flavor rather than a savory one. I do think the chocolate flavor overpowered the peanut butter, and the peanut butter flavor was rather mild. It was a good bar, but not my favorite. 3 stars

Next up, Strawberry Cheesecake.

This one was YUMMY. Dare I say…it replicated a strawberry cheesecake almost perfectly? Or to the best of the ability that a bar could do? It had a slight tart yet sweet flavor from the strawberries, yet a subtle cream cheese flavor as well. The flavors complimented each other quite beautifully, and I found myself almost happy eating this bar. It was SO good! Very moist, and the perfect mouthfeel. I loved how I could actually detect and taste the strawberries as well. 4.5 stars

Lastly, the Peanut Butter Supreme bar.

This one was also quite tasty. A good amount of peanut butter flavor, which I certainly liked. I found it to be a little more salty than sweet, and quite dense. I enjoyed the bits of nuts dispersed throughout the bar as it added extra texture and crunch to the bar. I think if it was a tad sweeter and a tad less salty, I would have liked it more. However, still a good bar, but a little on the bland side. 3.5 stars

Overall, Quest Bars seem to be a hit. I have liked pretty much every flavor that I have tried! 🙂

Here is the nutrition of the Strawberry Cheesecake Bar

Del Monte Vanilla & Spice Diced Pears

Author: Healthnuttxo

I have a pet peeve when it comes to fruit cups…why, oh WHY must EVERY SINGLE TIME I open one, it has to explode?! In class–> explodes on the table. At home–> explodes on my desk. On the subway–> probably would explode everywhere (let’s not try that one).  And then there is a good tablespoon of the juice/syrup wherever the fruit cup is resting, which in turn makes the bottom of the fruit cup sticky. And then I’m sticky.

Sigh.

ANYWAY, moving on past my little rant, let’s talk about this product in particular. Del Monte Vanilla & Spice Diced Pears. (I suppose the “explosion” of fruit juice is something that can’t really be helped, anyway). The pears were soft, but not mushy, which I liked. I could taste a bit of cinnamon, and an aftertaste of vanilla. It was the kind of vanilla flavor you would taste with a vanilla flavored coke. Artificial tasting, and just not quite right. I also almost expected this fruit cup to be sweeter.  I felt it was “lacking” sweetness, as if an actual pear would have been sweeter. I find this odd, because the pears are sitting in a “extra light syrup” which if you look at the ingredients, sugar is added, so I kind of was expecting this to be sweeter.

Overall, pretty good. Not my favorite fruit cup, as I felt the vanilla and cinnamon flavors were dulled out a bit. I would have liked more flavor from the cinnamon and vanilla, and I felt the vanilla flavor made it taste sort of artificial. I don’t know if I would buy these again, but I certainly will finish the 4 pack that I bought. 3 stars

Topricin Pain Relief & Healing Cream

Author: Healthnuttxo

Alright! Not a food (obviously) but something new for me to try. Topricin, a “Pain Relief & Healing Cream”. At first when I offered to review this product (free for me, given to me by the company) I thought…hmm…do I even really have that much pain.

Uh…YES. I’m just “used” to it, so it’s not that prevalent anymore! Hysterical, I know, and borderline ridiculous.

They gave me a few to try, also including a Kids version for pain and things like bug bites. Today’s review is of the Pain Relief & Therapeutic Healing Cream, and the Foot Therapy Cream.

I tried the Foot Therapy Cream first.

I have on and off achilles heel pain, as well as very high arches which leads to pain if I run too much/don’t wear supportive shoes, or am just on my feet all day. Which brings me to…I am mostly on my feet all day long! So I thought this one would be perfect.

I put it on my feet and lower calves, and noticed it was creamy and non greasy. It absorbed fairly well and had no smell to it, which I really liked. Let’s be honest…some foot creams are STINKY! But this one didn’t have a scent at all. I also liked that this cream was “safe for diabetics”, as listed on the box.

The next morning, my feet felt refreshed. I felt a little less achy and I think the cream helped take some of the swelling that can occur.

For this one… 3.5 stars.

Then, I tried the Therapeutic Healing Cream by Topricin. I applied it to my neck/upper trapezius muscles, as I carry a heavy back pack for most of the day and I was feeling sore and achy there. I noticed that the first application applied easily, had no smell and was creamy. THe 2nd application left a bit of residue, as I guess my skin was already saturated with the cream. The pain did subside, but not completely. It did help, don’t get me wrong, but I noticed in an hour or so the pain was back.

For this one…3 stars.

Overall, I like the creams! I think they help with mild pain and I liked how the foot cream worked. I recommend you try them if you experience mild pain, or are active and always on the move like me!
